Former NFL All-Pro linebacker Isiah “Butch” Robertson was killed in a car crash southeast of Dallas on Thursday night, the Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed to NFL.com. He was 69.

Robertson, who played for the Los Angeles Rams from 1971-78 before ending his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills, died in a three-car crash near the town of Mabank, Texas.

According to Lt. Lonny Haschel of the Texas Dept. of Public Safety, a preliminary investigation revealed Robertson was driving a limousine in the rain at an unsafe speed around a curve before skidding and coming to a rest partially in the roadway. A truck struck the limo and pushed it into an oncoming traffic lane, where it was struck again by another vehicle.

Authorities didn’t provide updates on the conditions of the other individuals involved in the crash, which remains under investigation. Haschel said the crash occurred a short time after Robertson was speaking at a high school football banquet nearby. The crash also was just miles away from a drug and alcohol treatment center Robertson founded in Mabank.

A four-time All-Pro selection and a six-time Pro Bowler, Robertson was selected 10th overall by the Rams in the 1971 NFL Draft. He played in 111 games for the Rams, recording 25 interceptions, per Pro Football Reference. He also played a big role in helping Los Angeles win six straight NFC West titles from 1973-78. He played four seasons with the Bills before retiring after the 1982 season.

Robertson, who attended Southern University from 1967-70, was inducted into the Black College Football Hall of Fame in 2017.

Isiah Robertson passed away last night in a car crash. It is a very sad day for me.

I first met Isiah in 1972. I was ten years old, living in Fountain Valley, California, and a proud member of the Rosita Little League Major Dodgers. We were a middling team, nothing extraordinary about us or our season, until one day at practice we noticed a rather large gentlemen jogging through the park where we practiced with two large dobermans. He stopped to watch us for a bit, and then struck up a conversation with our coach. He then came and introduced himself to us, and asked if he could help coach our little league team. I was already a die hard Rams’ fan at ten, and here was the reigning defensive rookie of the year in the NFL coaching our baseball team!

The rest of the season, we were the envy of the other teams. Isiah took us to several Angel games to watch “how the pros did it,” rented batting cages for us, got us new equipment, and it was the best season ever. He threw us a party at the end of the season that included several other Rams players. It was the best little season ever.

About three years later, a church group I belonged to went to watch a Rams’ practice at Cal State Fullerton (I believe). The only autograph I wanted to get was Isiah’s. I approached him after practice, and asked him for his autograph. He looked at me for a moment, and I could see that he had a hint of recollection. I told him my name, and called him “Coach.” He became so happy, and literally picked me up in the air. He said in front of all my friends that I didn’t need an autograph, that we were “friends.” He then introduced me to Jack Youngblood and Fred Dryer, and Lance Rentzel of all people. He was also such a kind soul, and did a lot of work with troubled teens after football.

    Rest In Peace, Butch.
