Theme of the chat was, Goff, Gurley, and Donald need to start earning those big contracts.

Wow. That was the Rams most dominant win yet. Even more impressive than the win over the Cardinals. Third consecutive road game as well. Cory Littleton is the Dante Hall or blocking punts. I remember people used to lament how Jeff Fisher’s Rams couldn’t surpass 7 wins. This Rams team will probably make it beyond the 7 win mark before December. Starting with a rested Packers team next week the Rams are embarking on the toughest part of their schedule. That said I’m going to enjoy this 7-0 thing. I used to dream of the Rams even being a game over .500 in late October. I would love to see more offense from the Rams TEs at some point, but as long as they’re winning I guess it doesn’t matter.

If ya get 4 turnovers, and a blocked punt, your just going to win.

Looking forward to the next few weeks. Green Bay is going to be interesting. The Saints are the best of the bunch, and the only team in the NFC now that looks like it can compete for the conference at this point (all caveats implied). Then KC in Mexico City. Going to be an interesting stretch.

BTW…second-largest point differential in the league after the Rams’ 107?

    Kansas City at 43.

    well.

against the vikings, goff had a statement game to the rest of the world.

last week against the broncos, gurley had a statement game to the rest of the world.

so it only made sense that this week against the 49ers, donald had a statement game to the rest of the world. best player in the nfl.

2 impressive plays. the strip sack where he ripped the ball out of beathard’s hands with just his one hand. then the sack where he just pushed the olineman back and knocked beathard down with the flick of a wrist. so powerful. so strong.

he’s now got 8 sacks in just 7 games. 6 tfls??? so disruptive. so glad the rams re-signed him. and those 8 sacks have all come in the last 4 games.

oh. and i can’t forget littleton. blocked punt. 2 sacks. definitely a keeper. a playmaker. gotta get him locked up before he hits free agency.

Wow the Rams just beat them down and finally broke them and that was with the ultra conservative play calling and pulling starters. I can’t argue with the results. I hope Kupp recovers quickly and completely as this season is going into the toughest part now. The Rams players aren’t reading their own press, staying focussed on their one game at a time philosophy. Littleton just keeps on getting better and the team as a whole doesn’t seem like it has played it’s best football yet, the just keep improving game after game.

It looked like it was a conscious choice to keep this one less innovative. Not only were the 9ers banged up in the secondary, which the Rams mostly ignored, but SF was clearly committing to defending the run first, yet they just kept pounding it. The Rams running game didn’t really pick up until the 4th quarter. So it looks to me like they just chose to bang this one out.

I think there are good reasons for that–they had no fear of the SF offense plus were on the road for a third game in a row, and so just chose to play a tough simple game (relatively speaking). It worked really well because the D kept getting turnovers and sacks against an overmatched SF offense.

I have no complaints, it’s interesting that they have different gears on offense and can if they choose go all Marty Schottenheimer.

The Rams running game didn’t really pick up until the 4th quarter. So it looks to me like they just chose to bang this one out.

and they didn’t have to wear gurley out either.

gurley only had 15 of the 35 carries. brown had 13.

    the number one rushing attack.

interesting to compare this one to the martz rams with faulk and warner.

not as explosive as that rams offense was. but that was probably unrealistic to expect. i mean the current rams’ receivers pale in comparison to bruce, holt, hakim, and proehl. and faulk’s receiving abilities – maybe the only current back who can compare is bell? maybe gurley can get there but as of now i think he’s just more limited in terms of the routes he can run. maybe i’m wrong on that.

but it’s the running game where the current rams might rival that of those rams. this offense can grind out wins. and it’s not just gurley. but brown too. i really hope that he sees the ball more going forward as he could take a load off gurley’s legs. and it’s not just the running backs. mcvay keeps defenses off balance with the sweeps that the receivers run. just a very dynamic rushing attack. i like it. i like the balance. and i’m hoping it serves them well as it can stretch defenses in ways that the gsot rams could not.

but also. this offense is not the finished product yet. it’ll be interesting to see how it evolves over the next few years. goff is currently 4 years younger than when warner took the helm in 1999. gurley is currently 2 years younger than when faulk was traded to the rams in 1999. running backs typically peak in their 6th year in the league. so i can only imagine what this offense will look like in 2 years – health permitting of course.

but also. how does mcvay evolve as a coach and playcaller? he’s still only 32 year old – 16 years younger than when martz took over as playcaller for the rams in 1999. my impression at this point is that mcvay has a better overall picture of how an offense should be run. and he’s very self-critical which should benefit him as teams find ways to slow the offense down. i’m not sure martz ever had that in him.

and also. hopefully, egos don’t get in the way like it did with martz, armey, and zygmunt. i don’t think it will. martz’s personality was divisive. mcvay seems to be a harmonizing force. more in line with vermeil.

i try not to get too ahead of myself. just try to enjoy the moment. but it’s hard. exciting times.

And perhaps McVay was trying to be mindful of the score due to his friendship and respect for Shanahan. I think he would have unleashed the dogs if at any point the 9’ers showed signs of life.

I just want to show a little love to the offensive line.

I think we take for granted sometimes just how well they are playing. But not only do they give Goff all kinds of time to sit back there, find a receiver, have a cup of coffee and read the paper, they MOVE people out of the way in the run game. They are very very good and I will be disappointed if they don’t send three guys to the Pro Bowl this year.

As for this game–the offense had the luxury from playing on short fields so they didn’t pile up tons of yardage but so what? McVay was very committed to the run today and that’s a good thing, IMO. Goff seemed just a little off the last two games–nothing serious, nothing concerning but just not quite as sharp as the Vikings game. It didn’t matter in this game.

The defense was truly dominant. If they can put up those types of games this team will go 19-0.

Of course they won’t play the 9ers every week.

It gets tougher now. But they did what they had to do and they are 7-0.

How about newly signed Nick Williams contributing right away? Very nice.

GZ looked great. I can breathe again on field goals and extra points.

Natsun is so much fun to watch. I wonder what happens when Cooper returns?

Littleton needs a long term deal. He isn’t just good, he’s special.

    Nice win.

Now onto the meatgrinder portion of the season.

    Gonna be tough.

But this team has shown it can win in different ways. The Chiefs may be more explosive offensively but this team is efficient and well-rounded. That is going to be huge going forward.

Goff seemed just a little off the last two games–nothing serious, nothing concerning but just not quite as sharp as the Vikings game. It didn’t matter in this game.

He went through a slump last year too.

Games 5-7 (Seattle, Jax, ARZ) he averaged 52.4% completions, 64.3 qb rating, and 6.1 yards per attempt.

This slump is not as bad as that one.

I just think he hits what Vermeil calls the 12 week wall. 6 weeks of camp/preseason + 5-6 games, and, the player’s internal foolball system is fried a bit.

He came out of it spectacularly last year. I assume he will this year too.

That one thing aside, I agree with virtually everything you say. Plus I think these are good observations:

I would like to beat the 49ers seventeen times in a row.

So how many is this now? Two in a row?

One. They lost the “end of the year pull the starters” game last year.

    Game 7 9ers at home …

Here’s to breaking past the 6-0 barrier. And any time we get to smack down on the 9ers the all the little kids inside me have a party.

    The Great

    1) JJ3’S PLUNDERING OF KITTLE. “Sorry man, I’m going to be relieving you of that football in midair with one arm.”

    2) Donald 4 sacks and a strip fumble and recovery? Just missing an INT for the cycle right?

    3) Littleton … okay now it’s serious. 3 this season, 5 on career … I am having a hard time finding the stats for that online … anyone know what the record is? It keeps taking me to punters rather than their blockers.

    4) Healthy GZ

    The Good

    5) Taking the starters out on time.

    6) Malcolm Brown could choose to be a super bowl backup or leave and get a great contract next year … either way Im happy for him.

    7) Franklin Myers is getting off a bit quicker now.

    8) Trevon Young sighting! Way to go dude!!

    9) Troy Hill played a little better.

    The Bad

    10) We still cannot adequately cover TEs.

    11) We still cannot stop an aggressive running attack fueled by a fresh RB.

    12) Goff seems a bit sluggish.

    13) I think it’s intentional, but we were a little vanilla on offense.

    14) Reynolds not stepping up as fast as I want and Hodge not getting the reps I want him to given that.

    15) I want Kelly or Davis getting some reps.

    16) I want Kiser getting reps. There has to be a mix where we don’t get washed out of the middle.

    The Ugly

    17) SF’s high draft pick next year. I’m not excited about facing N’Keal Harry for 10 years.
