The short faced bear may be the largest predatory mammal that ever lived. During the Pleistocene it was the most common bear in North America. When on all fours it was 5 or 6 feet tall at the shoulder, and when it stood upright it could reach a height of 12 feet. It could weigh up to 1300 lbs. Despite its size, it was fast. It’s long legs allowed it to reach speeds of 30 to 40 mph. There is no consensus about its lifestyle. Some scientists think it was a super predator like a polar bear, while others think it was an opportunistic omnivore like modern grizzlies and black bears.

Some scientists speculate that it delayed human immigration into North America by picking off the small bands of people as they crossed the Bering land bridge from Asia.

I dont think those ancient big-mammals get enuff pub. I was recently at the NY Museum of Natural History and all the kids in the joint were crowding around the T.Rex’s. No-one was crowding around the Giant Sloths or Giant Ant-eaters.

A giant fucking Sloth didnt excite them.

Its a reflection of these dire times, when a giant sloth doesnt excite people.

You seem to be more sympathetic with the ancient big fast bears than with people.

    Well…how did that go?

    Who’s extinct NOW, hunh?

Sorry about your extinct ancient big fast bear friends.

    Extinct?

    Hardly.

They simply retired to Boca Vista where they spend their time relaxing in jacuzzis and drinking margaritas.

Wait just a second, Mr Science. That chart makes it seem like the Wooly Mammoth was the same size or smaller than a regular ole Elephant.

thats gotta be fake mammoth news.

    Nice try though.

Well I notice the modern wolf is friendlier.

He looks at the camera and grins, for one thing.

The dire wolf? He’s all hostile and growly.

    Thus the name, ‘Dire’ wolf.

Dire: adjective, from the Latin dirus, meaning fearful or threatening.

The woolly mammoth was only about the size of an African elephant. They are very closely related to the modern Asian elephant which is even smaller. The huge mammoths that were bigger than modern elephants were the Steppe and Colombian mammoths. There was also a cow-sized mammoth that survived on Wrangel Island above Siberia until the pyramids in Egypt were built. Scientists think that was most likely just a coincidence, though.

What are the chances we can whip up support for nicknaming Aaron Donald “Megatherium.”

The whole Dline could be the “Big fearsome Immovable Sloths.”

Interesting theory, but Occam’s Razor suggests that it was the lack of reliable public transportation.

    Yeah that’s valid.

I mean the USA still has issues with public transportation, and if you think about, how many people are crossing the Bering Straight even today?

    Predatory animals? Nah.

Four way traffic signals instead of roundabouts. Roundabouts are much more efficient at moving traffic.
