It’s hard to tell what is policy here and what is just circumstances.

The Rams had 2 days of live unscripted scrimmages against Baltimore so sat the 1s.

The Oakland game is obvious and Gruden did the same thing.

Today the defense plays, but Goff, Gurley, Sullivan, Whit, and Hav don’t.

Goff is out because Hav is dinged up (they both may still play).

Is that policy or circumstances or a bit of both?

And how do you feel about it? It’s okay, it’s not okay, I don’t know?

Training camp and preseason used to be used to get players in shape. Now days players are in shape year round. You could ask, do your want to keep healthy or get ready for the regular season? Maybe that is a coaching thing? Fisher never seemed to be able to do it. imo

Preseason games now are not much more than glorified practice. I think there is a place for the games, but they should not be sold as full price football. They provide experience for younger players who need it more than vets do. They give you a chance to evaluate your young players.

You need to evaluate your roster and get ready for the start of the season. Are preseason games worth it? I am not sure. I don’t want to see them increase the regular season games. I think 16 is enough, probably too much, for the human body.

I don’t know how I feel about it. If it works and they’re ready when they play the Raiders I’m okay with it.

    I don’t care.

I think I’m content for veterans to sit it out.

Seems every year that a team loses an important player in the preseason. The harm done by losing a player to an injury outweighs the benefit of playing a preseason game, imo.

It’s a case-by-case thing. Depends on the player’s experience in the system. If a player is new to the team, or there are new coaches and schemes, or a player’s role changes, then…okay. But I surely do not see any reason for established starters who were here last year to play in the preseason. Huge risk, no reward.

Turns out, he’s sitting all the starters.

#Rams will sit out all offensive starters except for Jamon Brown today against the #Texans

2 more cents on this fwiw

    Rampage2K-

I was watching some pregame show the other day and they were talking about the Rams not playing any starters on offense. Prisco said he liked it and that other teams might start taking a page out of McVay’s book on how to handle preseason, but they might get some pushback by the NFL because they want to sell tickets and advertising…

He said he has been to every camp and said the Rams are the only team that is on a different level when it comes to practicing. He said the Rams do a lot of situational football and don’t waste time on a lot of the other stuff teams typically do. The Rams don’t need preseason as much as some other teams seem to need it.

More on that from earlier threads:

The best thing about watching the Rams practice is watching how@much situational work they do. That’s the way to practice in my book

    J.B. Long@JB_Long
McVay and Phillips duel constantly throughout camp. Ultra-competitive. They do as much/more situational team stuff as anyone.

yeah. not sure it matters much.

they don’t even run the actual schemes they will be running in the regular season.

i honestly wonder if they wouldn’t be better off starting the season a month early and adding in more bye weeks for each team. give players more rest during the regular season to hopefully prevent injuries although realistically not all injuries could be prevented. and also maybe expanding the rosters in another way to keep players fresher.
