1 Gurley. WTF happened? What is he.

2 Goff. I still think he can be great but those last few games were a disaster.

3 Grob — bust? Move him inside?

4 Any WRS on this team worth keeping ?

5 What do they need on Defense besides another DE ?

gurley has to be the biggest disappointment.

i mean grob may be the biggest bust, but i had braced myself for that already. i did not see that season coming from todd.

Gurney, I’m going with oline and coaching. The talent is still there.

Goff, Rookie. I don’t yet have any concerns.

Grob. Need a look from another staff. Could be a move to the inside, but maybe not.

WR. Britt and bring back all the young ones.

Defense. Best available at a decent price and/or draft position.

Move GRob inside to Left Guard. Look for a Left Tackle in the draft to groom, Jordan Morgan OT The Kutztown University in the 5th round, and get a free agent LT, maybe a Will Beauty of the Giants. Have to resign Britt, I doubt it will not be cheap. Dump Tim Barnes and draft Pat Elflien C Ohio State in round 2, and Artivous Scott WR Clemson in round 3. I like DeShawn Hall DE Texas A&M in the 4th round.

looking at running back sophomore slumps, the one slump that gives me hope is franco harris.

Rookie Year: 188 carries for 1,055 yds, 10 TDs, 5.6 YPC

Sophomore Year: 188 carries for 698 yards, 3 TDs, 3.7 YPC

hopefully, this season wasn’t the real todd gurley.

    Some IMOs (pronounced “eye-mohz”).

    1. A lot of that was Gurley.

    2. Goff–nah he wasn’t any more a disaster than any other college Air Raid qb dropped into an offense that cannot run the ball. The way I watch Goff is this. I patiently sit through the miscues and then note the plays that demonstrate “you have this talent or you don’t” level ability. If you see enough of that (and I did) you just then wait for the other stuff to catch up and become more consistent.
With Goff, Rams threw the ball slightly more than Dallas did. But Dallas has the 1st ranked running game, Bryant & Witten, & a top experienced OL, plus Prescott’s college offense was very similar to the Dallas offense. How much of those kinds of things did LA have?

    3. Hard to say on GR. Depends on what kind of offense they run. Criticism of him was often warranted and just as often completely hyperbolic.

    4. Well, Britt. Tavon (though really, he’s not a receiver, he is something else). Hard to say about the rest–Quick killed it for me, I;ve had it with him, but then we have no idea what they have in Thomas, Cooper, and Spruce. There were times this year when the receivers were okay. This year was a “Rams fans only remember bad things about Kendricks” year. That doesn’t tell me much other than the fact that fans will do that.

    5. They actually need 2 other DEs, not 1. If they don’t keep the Tree inside/Barron at OLB thing, then they need a middle LB. They have all sorts of players in the secondary, including Joyner, who is under-rated, but could afford to add to it. Secondary was the Rams big “multiple unit injuries” unit this year. I don’t know if you pay Tru or not.

on goff. it’s gonna be several things. can they get him a better oline? can they get him better receivers?

can they get a coach who can tap into his talents? clearly there are coaches who are more adept at getting the most out of the quarterbacks position.

how hard is he going to dedicate himself this offseason? he’s saying the right things and that’s encouraging. i think a lot of the drop-off at the end of the season. the stagnant offense. the sacks. is cuz he had no idea what defenses were doing to him. not seeing where the pressure was coming from. not knowing or recognizing the coverages. i don’t know, but i hope he takes a clue and is obsessively studying film. working on mechanics. getting stronger in the body.

i believe the physical talent is there. i’ve read too many reports of him making throws very few others can to think that it isn’t there. it’s about being surrounded by the right people and putting in the preparation to be a good qb.

I think that’s just true. They overwhelmed him in a situation where he didn’t have any Dallas type advantages.

Actually watching the games, that was visible right in his play. If someone did a “best of Goff” vid, it would largely consist of plays like that. Where you go, which former Rams qbs could make that play?

Goff just needs someone who knows what they are doing. I see 2016 like Peyton Manning’s first year. Lumps and bumps and plenty of mistakes.

Gurley had a bad year, both personally and from too many greetings from D-linesmen in the backfield. A good O-line is needed. To me, that is priority #1 for the off-season, even 2018 off-season, a new O-line with 2 new vets and a new O-line coach.

WR’s may have to wait. If Spruce can stay healthy, he will provide some excitement and dependability.

For defense, I can’t see doing much this off-season except re-signing guys and getting someone for DE.

The Goff trade has hindered re-building this year, but next year we should be fine.

Even better, go back to Troy Aikmans rookie year. He went 0-15. The only game Dallas won was game 16, was the game the game Troy didn’t play, and he was injured. Goff maybe would be better off learning from Aikman. Going 0-15 as a rookie to a three time Super Bowl champion.

what i’m about to write isn’t going to be eye opening, but if you look at qbs such as troy aikman, john elway, peyton manning… qbs picked high and with enormous expectations. and questionable supporting casts. yeah. their rookie seasons were pretty bad. and peyton had harrison and a fantastic season from faulk to prop him up. aikman didn’t really take off until his third season which also happened to be smith’s breakout sophomore season. not to mention one of the game’s great playcallers, and quite possibly the greatest offensive line ever.

specifically looking at these three qbs the difference in career qb rating and their rookie qb rating, you get a difference of about 25-30 points. that’s true even in the case of eli manning. the difference for him was 28 points compared to his brother which was higher at 30 points.

so if goff can end up with an 88-93 rating at the end of his career. not too bad.

that’s not even taking into account the fact that the team was going through a relocation.

but they have to surround him with the right people, and goff has to prepare himself like all the great qbs did.

I’m more lost on this team than on any Rams team I’ve ever seen.

There are problems all over the place.

    The offensive line? Check.

    Receivers? Check.

    Running back? Check.

    Quarterback? Who knows?

    Secondary? Check.

The defense may have some questions and be thin. But the offense is a tsunami and we have to get to high ground.

There needs to be a big roster turnover. Whatever, “culture” was established with these players can’t be flushed out until some of them go. Others–just don’t have the talent. We’ve been “getting by” with Tim Barnes, for example. But it’s not enough.

I think that the next coach must address the offensive line above all else.

I can remember during the GSOT years–when the Rams offense had a problem, Martz would always address the line–he’d say about “fixing” this or that on the line and the line would bounce back from a bad game. It was a priority, it seemed. It just feels these days, like it’s an afterthought or a problem that they can’t solve. Part of that is the players themselves, of course. I don’t want to spend the next three years trying to fix Greg Robinson. If he has value at guard, fine. Otherwise, move on completely. But they need a new LT. I will let the next coach decide who they think is salvageable of this bunch because they obviously can’t all be replaced in one year. I’m hopeful a new line coach can help.

Nothing matters if they do not fix the line.

After that–I stay with offense and find a couple of reliable receivers. And I HOPE Gurley is okay.

The line and then receivers are my top priorities this off season. And yes–goodbye to Brian Quick. Enough already.

If I could trade Tavon I’d do it.

I don’t see the bang for the buck and he just doesn’t seem to fit in for enough plays. Let someone else work with him. I’m not sure what he’d bring in terms of a draft pick or player but I’d explore it. If I could get a solid lineman I’d take it.

    It’s a mess.

It won’t be fixed in one year.

But it’s time to shake things up and not just put on band-aids.

    Rebuild the team.

I think the whole situation is way better than people are saying.

I agree with ZN although we may not agree on all of the position groups and reasons.

IMO, the only thing that truly needs fixing is the online. Defense is decent. Health and a couple additions wouldn’t hurt. We’ve got a bunch of young WRs and a couple TEs. Could be the third year before we determine with of them are keepers, but we have enough to sort through. Would be nice to add a vet mid-tier receiver or receiving TE.

If Goff progresses, the online if fixed and the coaching and play calling on offense improve, we’ll be competitive for the playoffs next year.
