znModeratorNow Jared Goff’s backup, Case Keenum has respect of teammates
Alden Gonzalez
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The word “excited” was used a combined 14 times late Tuesday afternoon, first by coach Jeff Fisher and then by quarterback Jared Goff. But this was outside, in organized media sessions, with the portable backdrop behind them and a handful of working cameras in front of them.
Within the Los Angeles Rams’ locker room, what should’ve been a celebrated occasion — the naming of Goff as the starter, the beginning of a new era — was met with an undercurrent of sadness.
It was because of Case Keenum.
He worked so hard, fought so long, cared so much. He was thrust into an awkward, arduous situation and handled it with class. And though he exasperated an impatient new fan base that grew frustrated with the offense and clamored for Goff, the No. 1 overall pick, Keenum earned the respect of his teammates.
“It’s rough to hear,” Rams left guard Rodger Saffold said of Keenum being demoted to backup duties, “especially after a win.”
Greg Zuerlein kicked three field goals Sunday as the Rams edged the New York Jets 9-6 on the road. Keenum completed 17 of 30 passes for 165 yards and no interceptions.
“He helped us win the game,” Saffold said. “I mean, let’s be honest. There’s a couple of times where some things happened in the red zone and we couldn’t convert them into touchdowns, but this isn’t, at all, all his fault.”
The Rams’ biggest issue is actually their running game, considering how heavily they depend on it. Behind an offensive line that has not done a good enough job opening holes, Todd Gurley ranks 41st among 43 running backs in rushing yards per carry. The offense overall is last in the NFL in yards per game, and Keenum — whose subpar arm strength is a big reason why defenses stack the box in the first place — shoulders the NFL’s lowest Total QBR.
So the highly anticipated move was made, immediately following a three-game stretch in which the Rams mustered only two touchdowns. But Keenum was nonetheless appreciated.
Fisher pointed out that he was named a captain at the start of the season and is “still a captain.”
“His leadership, and his enthusiasm, and his commitment, and everything,” Fisher said about Keenum. “You can’t ask for anything more out of somebody.”
Goff took an assortment of questions centered on his own readiness and went out of his way to offer his own acknowledgements.
“I’ll say it now,” Goff said, while answering a question about how he was informed of the decision. “I can’t stress enough how awesome Case has been before this, in training camp, in [organized team activities], now that this has happened after. On and off the field, I can’t stress enough how good of a teammate and how awesome he’s been with it.”
Keenum went undrafted despite finishing his career at Houston with NCAA records in passing yards, completions and touchdowns. He started eight games for the Houston Texans in 2013, and led the Rams to three wins in the last four games of 2015. Then the Rams drafted Goff and every Keenum interview revolved around that, even though he would begin the 2016 season as the starter.
“I’m still batting a thousand,” Keenum said at one point during training camp. “Every interview has had Jared Goff come up.”
Keenum posted a respectable passer rating of 97.4 from Weeks 2-6, at one point setting a franchise record with 19 consecutive completions. But then he threw four interceptions in London on Oct. 23, absorbed boos from the home fans in Los Angeles after the bye week and couldn’t lead his team into the end zone in New Jersey against the Jets. And now he’s a backup.
“He’s handled this situation like a professional,” Rams defensive tackle Michael Brockers said. “He knows what’s at hand, and he’s helping Jared along, and given him advice. He accepts the role, and he understands what’s at stake, and he understands we’re trying to win games.”
The Rams snapped a four-game losing streak with the win over the Jets. At 4-5, they remain only 1½ games out of a wild-card spot. It’ll be up to Goff moving forward, but Keenum promises to be there to help.
“He’s given me advice all year,” Goff said. “I’m sure he’ll be very helpful this week and helpful on Sunday.”

znModeratorRams quarterback Case Keenum on demotion: ‘Honestly, I wasn’t happy. I want to play’
RICH HAMMOND

THOUSAND OAKS – The transition might have been inevitable, but it didn’t sting Case Keenum any less.
On April 14, the Rams traded up for the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, and Keenum, a reasonable, intelligent man, knew the future. The Rams would draft a quarterback. That rookie eventually would take his job, almost certainly before the end of the season. Still, Tuesday’s news, the loss of his starting job, stung.
“Obviously surprised,” Keenum said of his reaction. “Honestly, I wasn’t happy. I want to play.”
It’s not going to happen, barring an injury. Jared Goff is the Rams’ quarterback for the rest of this season and Keenum, who battled up from the practice squad to win the starting job, is the backup.
Goff, Coach Jeff Fisher and offensive coordinator Rob Boras have been effusive with their praise of Keenum’s play and attitude. Boras went so far as to say he loves Keenum dearly. They talked about how he would remain a captain and help Goff, and how his attitude would help the Rams win games.
Keenum? He said all the correct things after Wednesday’s practice, but not surprisingly, he was not in a light, joking mood, one that suggested he had reached a level of peace with the job changed.
Asked if it surprised him to lose his job after a victory, Keenum said, “Yeah. Yeah it did.” Asked if he could share the explanation he got for the change, Keenum said, “No. That’s Coach Fisher. Ask him.”
It’s fairly obvious, though. Jeff Fisher said consistently, since April, that Goff would play when he showed himself ready. Not necessarily when Keenum struggled, not at any predetermined point. The competition, such as it was, was always Goff vs. Goff, not Goff vs. Keenum.
Now, at least in Fisher’s eyes, Goff is ready. Fisher informed his coaches of the impending change Monday night, so they could factor it into the game plan, which is handed over to players on Tuesday.
Not much will change, offensive coordinator Rob Boras said. The Rams will continue to script their first 16 plays, and Boras and Goff will discuss which plays Goff feels most comfortable running. With his greater arm strength, Goff might allow the Rams to expand their play-calling and throw deep often.
“We’re going to find out,” Boras said. “He’s tall. It’s a big man’s game at a lot of positions. He’s tall. He can see. Everything we talked about. His delivery. How quick he is. He’s decisive. We saw how tough he was at Cal. We hope he doesn’t have to be that tough and take hits, but we saw his toughness. His ability to escape and make plays. His intelligence. We’re excited about seeing him take off on Sunday.”
Goff wasn’t made available to reporters Wednesday, and won’t be until after Sunday’s game against Miami. Boras praised Goff’s practice, even though there’s a worrisome spot.
Starting center Tim Barnes missed practice with a foot injury he sustained late in Sunday’s victory over the New York Jets. Backup Demetrius Rhaney would take over for Barnes, who has made 25 consecutive starts, and the Rams would have a rookie quarterback and a new center, a scary proposition.
Still, the Rams have expressed optimism that Goff can improve the Rams’ often moribund offense.
“He’s excited, as he should be,” Fisher said. “It’s a challenge. This game is not going to define his career. It’s a good defense but he’s excited about the opportunity. He’s working hard. He’s great in the huddle. The offensive group just moved on and they’re excited about it.”
Perhaps, but teammates also seemed to be sad for Keenum. Offensive lineman Rodger Saffold said he was a little surprised that the move was made after a victory but that the line would do everything possible to support Goff.
Asked what he would tell Rams fans, who chanted for Goff two weeks ago during a home loss to Carolina, Saffold said, “You got what you wanted, so be out there in full force.”
Many got what they wanted. Not Keenum, who went 7-7 as a starter. That’s not bad, since expectations were low for Keenum, who went undrafted then briefly held a starting job with the Houston Texans.
Keenum said he has accepted his role and would continue to do everything possible – on the field, in the film room and in the locker room – to help Goff, but Keenum retained something of a defiant streak.
Asked about the things he brought to the team (during his starting stint), Keenum interrupted with, “What I still bring to the team.” Keenum said that even though he was aware of Goff’s presence and what it meant, he didn’t look over his shoulder this season and “took ownership” of the Rams’ offense.
“There’s always stuff I could have done better,” Keenum said, “but I thought I put my team in a chance to win. Obviously we didn’t win, and there’s a lot of games that we’d like back and feel like we should have won, but that happens across the league. And we’re still in the hunt. We’re still in the playoff hunt.”

Keenum “surprised,” not happy with Fisher’s decision to play Goff
Newly demoted Rams quarterback Case Keenum told reporters Wednesday he was “surprised” by coach Jeff Fisher’s decision to name No. 1 pick Jared Goff the team’s starting quarterback.
Though Keenum knew the move was coming eventually, he didn’t seem totally ready for it to come when it did.
“Honestly, I wasn’t happy,” Keenum said. “I want to play. That’s why I play football, to be the quarterback and the guy with the ball in his hands.
“With that being said I trust Coach Fisher. I trust these coaches and their decision. I’m a captain and I have to do my job. My job is whatever they tell me my job is.”
The Rams are 4-5 after a 9-6 road win over the Jets last Sunday. Keenum has thrown nine touchdown passes and 11 interceptions on the season while completing 61 percent of his passes.
He wasn’t the only one surprised. Fisher said Monday that Goff would remain the No. 2 quarterback, but Tuesday apparently changed his mind and announced Goff would make his first start Sunday vs. the Dolphins.
