I would say it looks like they can have a nice aerial attack

But they have to be able to run enough for this dynamic to happen–if the defense overcommits to stopping the run they leave the air game more open, if they don’t commit to the run they can punish them for it with rushing yards.

If that dynamic holds, then I can see them having a solid air game with Kendricks, Bailey, and Britt, and possibly also Quick if he’s for real this year. This also would let them use Austin in all sorts of ways without having to make him the centerpiece. With that, you can also maybe count on some contributions from Cook. Anything past that would be gravy.

Short answer: Kendricks, Bailey, Britt, with Austin as a wildcard type. That right there is meat n potatoes. Anyone else in addition to that is gravy.

Well it would be nice if someone on this team
    besides Quinn,
    drew a double-team.

Anyway, think about it though–how many teams in NFL history had 2 guys who drew double teams?

I think with virtually every great defense, if you replaced one guy from the DL, it wouldn’t be as good. (The “as” is important there.) Sapp? Greene? Page? Kirksey?

Well, Quinn is the onliest player on this team who regularly draws a double-team
I think. Maybe Cook from time to time.

But I’d like to see a WR on this team emerge to the point where
    he draws a double-team.

Ah I get it. I misread. I thought you just changed the subject to defense.

Yes it would be nice if they had a deadly receiver other teams were forced to double up. Last year they didn’t even have receivers who could take advantage when someone else was doubled up.

Their dynamic on offense is this–every defense they play has to think they need to defend the run.

The Rams don’t even need to gain running yards in those conditions, as long as the defense is adjusting to play run.

That’s why to me the GB game the other day when Bradford was in, and the Carolina game last year when Bradford was still in, look the same.

Defense focuses on the run and as a result there are cracks left open in the pass D. Bradford can take advantage.

They were doing that last year with receivers who aren’t as good as this year. (Including a lot of the same players…who it looks like have upped themselves a notch through growth and experience.)

So if they could do it last year, and the receivers as a group were not as good as this year? Ergo, ipso factum curly est, it means that they ought to be better at that same dynamic this year.

And, at the same time, having a double-team drawing WR would make it even better. Granted.

There are a lot of different ways it can work.

The GSOT had Bruce, Holt, Faulk, and then tacked on the speed of Hakim, with the chain moving ability of Proehl.

Pats: Moss (deep threat/alley-oop guy) and Welker (chain mover) worked great, long before Gronk and Hernandez appeared.

Colts: Harrison and Wayne, coupled with a great TE (Clark) and a pass catching back (James or Addai).

Pats again: Gronk, Hernadez, and the chain mover Welker.

Saints: Colston, Graham (Best receiving TE in football), Sproles (dump-offs/screens/the chain mover), Moore (another chain mover), and then Henderson and Meachem.

    Packers: Everybody

Those are some of the recent, best passing attacks, imo.

But they all have two things in common: Great QBs, and coaches that will chunk it downfield from anywhere on the field.

The current Rams can’t match any of that, but I agree they can be very successful throwing the ball if they have a running game. Just the threat of running the ball effectively is enough. Sometimes the threat is greater than the execution.

    The questions (for me anyway):
Can Britt and Quick consistently beat one on one coverage after a play action fake?
Can the O-line stay healthy and give Bradford time to look deep?

I’m not concerned about Bailey. He’s suspended for 4 games and is useless for a month. When he comes back, I hope he contributes.

If Quick and Britt maintain their current level of play we’re solid.Bailey comes back in Oct and we’ll be rolling. Kendricks was doubled on the TD catch, maybe not by design but in effect. Britt was also in heavy traffic for his catch. With Britt I don’t think 50/50 is accurate more like 95/5 for contested throws. The Offense doesn’t worry me near as much as the D at this point. No PI penalties great but very little pass defense as a whole and the run D is worse
