“Goff’s Ceiling” is of course an honest, if relatively obscure novel about a struggling artist. But actually I am referring to the Rams quarterback.
I rate the Rams qbs worth rating this way:
Warner
…
Bulger pre-2007 OL demolition
Everett
Bradford … see Bulger
Ferragamo
…
lots of blank space
…
Keenum
…
everyone else, too many to listPeople might quibble with that list. Which is fine, that’s part of the discussion.
I actually see Goff this way. I put him at least equal to Bulger (that is pre-The Hindenberg, oh the humanity Bulger) and Everett.
I think he has it in him to be on Warner’s level.
Others probably don’t agree.
May 14, 2016 at 10:49 am #44018nittany ramModeratorWell, athletically Goff brings more to the table than Warner did. And the thing is about Warner, nobody knew he was going to be Warner until he was…Warner.
So I agree, potentially Goff could be as good as Warner. But much about what made Warner great had nothing to do with athletic ability. His accuracy, quick release and a bunch of sorta abstract intangibles set him apart from the rest of the NFL. I don’t know what’s being said about Goff’s release but I hear he is accurate. Of course, he could be as effective as Warner but be so for different reasons. I don’t expect him to play like Warner however he will need to have some of those intangibles to be on his level.
One thing Goff won’t have is Bruce, Holt, Hakim and Proehl so we should be patient if he doesn’t take command of the offense as quickly as Warner did.
May 14, 2016 at 11:21 am #44022InvaderRamModeratori think he can be better than bradford.
he’s got his size quick release and accuracy.
but then he has him beat in pocket presence coming out of college.
i also think we see sizable increases in his arm strength over the next 2 seasons as he adds bulk.
but we don’t know about his decision making skills in a league that’s faster and more sophisticated. we also don’t know about his obsession with being the best. those two things will determine how high his ceiling can be.

Goff has one of the quickest releases people have seen in a while. It clocks a bit quicker than Brady’s. (Someone actually measured that.) Another noted strength is his ability to use really quick feet to maneuver in the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield. Since he played behind one of the worst OLs in college football, this attribute was regularly visible.

But this is the Rams. You have to factor in the enormous bad luck into the equation. So it goes to reason that if two quarterbacks are drafted high one year…. No matter what….. The OTHER qb will end up with the hall of fame career.
Only Vermeil could overcome the Rams cursed horrific bad fortune
May 14, 2016 at 2:22 pm #44032wvParticipantWell, talking about ‘ceilings’ for a guy that hasn’t
taken a pro snap is always a little tricky,
but I’d wildly-speculate that he has an ‘elite ceiling’.Meaning IF his pocket-abilities that worked magically in college
are translatable to the pros, then, yeah, he can be Warner-esqe.I’ll be curious to see how Fisher and Boras handle his
first year and his education. How much will they put on him.
Are they gonna do a ‘dink and dunk’ thing like in Bradford’s first year.
Gawd, i hate that kindof offense.I wonder what the Oline’s “ceiling” is this year. Thats
what I’m a-wonderin.w
vMay 15, 2016 at 9:00 am #44078WinnbradParticipantI have no idea what Goff’s ceiling is. The floor would be a Ryan Leaf/Jamarcus Russell type bust.
The ceiling? Heck, if Goff gets anywhere near Everett or Bulger in their prime then we’ve got a good QB. Hopefully for 10 years.
I’m excited to see him play in preseason. I want him to move the chains with a good running game, a good short passing game, and his feet. I think he can do it. He seems “shifty” in the pocket. Goff seems to have a lot of experience running for his life and making the best of busted plays. Good. He’s gonna need that.
May 16, 2016 at 7:49 pm #44161NewMexicoRamParticipantHmm. I really don’t see Goff comparing to former Rams QB’s. When I think Goff, I think Aaron Rodgers. Movement, accuracy, looks over the entire field, rarely hurt.
Now, when thinking about production, I hope for Warner 1999-2001.
May 17, 2016 at 3:39 pm #44188joemadParticipantceiling… as in potential…
Thus, if I was starting a team with a chance to pick a Rams QB who was in their prime and based on what I know today…..
1) Warner
2) Everett
3) Bradford
4) BulgerIf only Everett had Faulk, Bruce, Holt, Az and Proehl.
If only Sam had the above + Ellard and Flipper
If only Goff has anything close to the above with the exception of Gurley…..I’d stick Goff right above Bulger…..(slot 3a)
I think people forget how great Bradford was in College and how well he played before the Carolina injury…..
Let’s see if Goff get’s ROY with nothing to throw to like Sam did.

As a rookie Sam had a OC who knew how to bring him along slowly. He didn’t put too much on him. That was the key to Sam having a relatively successful first season.

The smart move would have been to draft them both. Too late for that, though…
