March 18, 2015 at 1:48 pm #20837rflParticipantHmmm. Never heard of the guy. But, there’s this: http://www.prideofdetroit.com/2015/2/18/8052233/lions-free-agents-2015-garrett-reynolds.
Excerpts:
Case for re-signing him
Reynolds’ versatility proved to be extremely valuable in 2014. He initially joined the team as an offensive guard, and he was brought back just days after the first game of the season as an offensive tackle. He immediately stepped in as the starting right tackle due to injuries to the Lions’ starter and backup, and he helped keep things afloat on the O-line throughout the season with various players going down. Considering he should be a cheap option, the Lions could do a lot worse than Reynolds from a depth standpoint.
Case against re-signing him
Although Reynolds was versatile, there was a noticeable drop-off when he was in the game at right tackle in 2014. I guess that makes sense considering Reynolds wasn’t at his normal position and was the Lions’ third-stringer, but undrafted rookie Cornelius Lucas jumped him on the depth chart at tackle as the season progressed. It’s true that Reynolds is a better fit at guard, but part of being versatile is being able to perform well at multiple positions. If that’s what the Lions want out of a backup offensive lineman, then there may be better options out there.
Final verdict
Considering the Lions don’t really have any proven depth at guard, it would be wise to re-sign Reynolds. As mentioned earlier, he should be a cheap option, and the fact that he can slide outside to tackle if needed is valuable considering how many injuries the Lions dealt with on the O-line last season. Guard is certainly a better fit for Reynolds, but having someone with experience at multiple positions on the offensive line is important for when emergency situations arise on game day.

March 18, 2015 at 1:59 pm #20841DakParticipantSounds like a backup. Which means, the Rams would still need to acquire a center, guard and tackle. Unless this guy would be the Rams’ new starting guard. Which I’m not too excited about.

Well, cheap help is better than expensive busts!
I’m sure tired, though, of making due with low level OL talent. For a bleeding decade.
And I am amazed at how weak our OL efforts have been when Fisher clearly wants to rely on a power running game. You cannot have that with an OL of merely cheap talent.

March 18, 2015 at 2:11 pm #20845znModeratorSounds like a backup.
Unless he is at guard. That is, from what I just read here (quickly) his drop-off was at tackle.
The league is full of guys who do well at guard in their 2nd or 3rd stop.
Which promises nothing, of course…depends on how good they are at finding them.
March 18, 2015 at 2:19 pm #20846HerzogParticipantI’m with you 100 %.
You know what’s nutz? Last year we signed Saffold, and drafted Robinson…..and those two are the only starters we have. I really can’t believe it.
March 18, 2015 at 2:24 pm #20848ZooeyModeratorThey need more than a C, G, and RT. They need depth, too. They lost Person, right? They need bodies in camp.
I doubt the Rams are thinking of him as the “answer” as a starter. They won’t stop looking because they get Reynolds.
And they may not even offer him a contract.
March 18, 2015 at 2:30 pm #20850znModeratorGarrett is the nephew of former linebacker Jack “Hacksaw” Reynolds.
Positives: High-cut with the thick-lower body build scouts prefer for the strong-side tackle position. Good initial burst off the snap as a run blocker. Provides an initial pop at the line and can generate movement. Good upper body strength to lock up defenders. Improved sustain of blocks as a senior. Alert in pass protection. Recognizes the blitz and reacts accordingly. Good bloodlines; father, Art, and uncle, Jack, both played professional football. Jack, better known by his nickname “Hacksaw,” played 15 years in the NFL for the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers.
Negatives: Over-achiever type. Has the size and toughness, but may lack the pure athleticism for the NFL. Too high in his stance and in his hand placement in pass protection and can be pushed into the pocket because he loses the leverage battle. Good effort to block on the move, but isn’t particularly nimble, especially laterally.

Third? I didn’t know we had a 2nd.
And the guy plays better at OG. So we sign him for #3 OT? I can’t help but think that he’ll be mainly at OG.
I wonder if this suggests that we are close on Joe B.
And of course we need to see the $ he signed for.

Indeed.
I suppose none of it matters until it’s all said and done.
But, Lord, this business of filling actual roster HOLES–as in no one signed at OL–after picking up DTs and LBs is a scary way to go.
I guess the reasoning is that the costs drop as the FA market rolls out. But, damn, get us some quality for the OL before it’s all gone!

Rams add OL Garrett Reynolds
By Nick WagonerEARTH CITY, Mo. — For those waiting for the St. Louis Rams to finally add an offensive lineman, they got it done Wednesday afternoon. But it’s probably not one of the two or three you were expecting.
The Rams signed offensive tackle Garrett Reynolds on Wednesday with an eye toward adding some much needed depth on their line. Reynolds spent the 2014 season with the Detroit Lions after playing for the Atlanta Falcons his first four years in the league.
In coming to St. Louis, Reynolds will be reunited with offensive line coach Paul Boudreau, who coached Reynolds from 2009-11 in the same role in Atlanta. That familiarity almost certainly played a part in bringing Reynolds to St. Louis.
In five NFL seasons, Reynolds has appeared in 52 games with 27 starts, making starts at guard and tackle along the way. That versatility also makes the 6-foot-7, 305-pound Reynolds a fit for a Rams’ line in need of depth.
While the Rams do have openings for starters at right tackle, one guard spot and center, it seems unlikely the Rams view Reynolds as the answer for one of those roles, though that that could change depending on how the rest of the offseason goes. For now, it’s probably better to view Reynolds as a sort of replacement for Mike Person, the versatile lineman who departed for Atlanta in free agency last week.

March 18, 2015 at 5:37 pm #20900rflParticipantJoe Barksdale and Justin Blalock are still in play, but if they sign Barnes, it probably eliminates Stefen Wisniewski. imo
fwiw Snead indicated that they would address the line in the draft. Fisher is still lying to JT.
Ag, I am wondering what the $ on Reynolds is. Does it make a dent in the cap margin? If so, that would probably suggest that they are projecting him to start. Yet his description makes him sound like a good swing guy for 2nd string. As a swing BUP, he may not punch too big a hole in the cap.
I am HOPING that they are planning on signing Joe B. and that they aren’t deluded.
But then we need an OC. Can Barnes be trusted with that key position?

I would expect minimum wage plus a modest bonus on a short term contract for Renyolds and Barnes. Barksdale at ~5 million for 4 years? I have no idea what they plan at center. I would try Jones and Barnes and draft one. I would also draft the best OT that I can.

They don’t have a #2.
But they don’t have to sign these guys in order of prestige.
They need some depth. This guy has experience, Boudreau knows him, he fits, he’s cheap (probably).

Rams add free-agent OT from Detroit
3 minutes ago • By Jim ThomasAddressing a need on a razor-thin offensive line, the Rams signed free-agent offensive tackle Garrett Reynolds to a two-year deal, the team announced Wednesday.
Reynolds, 27, started four games for Detroit last season at right tackle. He spent his previous five seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, who drafted him in the fifth round out of North Carolina in 2009.
Reynolds, 6-7, 305, has played in 52 games with 27 starts in the NFL, and had starting experience at guard with the Falcons. For three consecutive seasons in Atlanta, he opened the season as the team’s starting right guard, but could never hold the job.
Rams offensive line coach Paul Boudreau was in Atlanta with Reynolds from 2009 through 2011, so there is a familiarity factor.
Until adding Reynolds, the Rams had only seven offensive linemen under contract, and only two (Greg Robinson and Rodger Saffold) who had started an NFL regular-season game.
Reynolds had never started more than 10 games in an NFL season, and appears to be more of a depth addition than necessarily an opening-day starter at guard or tackle.
He’s the nephew of former Rams linebacker John “Hacksaw” Reynolds.
March 18, 2015 at 8:55 pm #20941znModeratorSt. Louis Rams Sign OL Garrett Reynolds
by Patrick Karraker
http://archauthority.com/2015/03/18/st-louis-rams-sign-ol-garrett-reynolds/
The St. Louis Rams finally made some sort of move to address their offensive line, which has been stripped bare by free agency and cap-conserving cuts, signing veteran offensive lineman Garrett Reynolds to a two-year contract worth $2.2 million. The 27-year-old Reynolds will become the seventh lineman who the Rams officially have in the fold for the 2015 season.
On a team that does not have many experienced depth options at the moment, Reynolds is a nice, versatile player to have around. After playing primarily right tackle during his college career at North Carolina, Reynolds played exclusively guard for the Atlanta Falcons from 2009 to 2013, starting in 23 games while appearing in 42 overall. After being released by the Falcons in February of last year, Reynolds signed with the Detroit Lions as training camp opened. He went on to start four games for them at right tackle while appearing in two more on a rotational basis.
Reynolds fits the profile of a typical long and lean Jeff Fisher offensive tackle, as he’s listed at 6-foot-7 but at times has been listed as tall as 6-foot-8, and he most recently weighed in at a svelte 310 pounds. In an ideal scenario, Reynolds probably serves as an experienced swing backup for starting tackles Greg Robinson and Joe Barksdale (who is still on the free agent market at the moment). The Rams didn’t have that type of player last year, as Robinson and Rodger Saffold, the team’s starting guards, were the primary backup tackles, with inexperienced Mike Person serving as the emergency option. (In addition, the Rams obviously made a misstep in allowing practice squad tackle Mike Remmers to escape to the Carolina Panthers midway through the season; Remmers went on to start the last five games of the regular season plus two playoff contests for Carolina.)
The reality is that Reynolds may also end up competing for the Rams’ other vacant guard position if no more established free agent options are brought into the fold. The team is expected to address the guard position in the middle rounds of the draft, but with an unproven rookie experiencing the grind of the NFL for the first time, guys like Reynolds and long-term project Brandon Washington will likely end up pushing for a starting spot.

1 out of 143. Cap is about 143 million. His cap hit this year is 1 million. Then he can be cut next year with no dead money.
