Goodell and Kraft Talk about the NFL back in LA
From NFL.com
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — The city of Los Angeles has been without an NFL team for almost two decades, but Commissioner Roger Goodell believes the door remains open for pro football to return to a town that once housed both the Raiders and Rams.
“It still comes back to, ‘Do we have the right solution in Los Angeles?’ And that comes back to a stadium,” Goodell said Thursday at The Beverly Hilton during a panel on Thursday Night Football. “Do we have a stadium that we feel can be competitive with the high-quality stadiums? I just came from San Francisco, from a ribbon-cutting for a new stadium (in Santa Clara) and we’re excited about that and we’re investing billions of dollars in creating those kinds of stadiums.”
Said Goodell: “We would like to do that. We think there’s a great opportunity to be successful (in Los Angeles). I think opportunity’s starting to develop, maybe in part because we have that long-term planning in front of us.”
Patriots owner Robert Kraft was on hand for the panel and told the room that league-wide “ownership is collectively very concerned that we don’t have at least one team” in L.A.
“In the end, we want young people here branded to a team,” Kraft said. “I know that Roger and I and a number of the owners who care about the long-term health of the NFL feel it’s very important for our future to have at least one — if not two teams — in downtown L.A.”
July 18, 2014 at 6:48 am #1949GreatRamNTheSkyParticipantYesterday in San Francisco, Goodell suggested that the Raiders have two choices. A new stadium in Oakland or joining the 49ers in Levi Stadium. This has long been the rumor that the league desired both the 49ers and the Raiders in Levi Stadium. In recent years only three times has Goodell and the league publicly voiced an opinion on where a team should be. Minnesota, Buffalo and now the Raiders.
Not once during the last two years during the negotiations with the CVC and the arbitration and now as the Rams come closer to the end of their lease has Goodell or the league voiced any kind of support for the Rams remaining in St. Louis. But they are strongly talking the desire to be in LA and they have stated that their will be no expansion teams.

July 18, 2014 at 10:12 am #1952znModeratorGrits–as per my custom, I am going to collect all of the Rams to LA posts into one thread. That is, rather than a few different threads on the same issue, it’s better to have one that keeps getting added to. I won’t do it though till I hear from you. Do you have a title you want to give that thread? Thanks…zn

July 23, 2014 at 5:30 pm #2357GreatRamNTheSkyParticipantHere is an article today about Stan eyeing more land at Hollywood park in Inglewood CA. It would give him plenty of land for a stadium, parking and even a practice facility.

Is Kroenke eyeing more L.A. land?
http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/morning_call/2014/07/is-kroenke-eyeing-more-l-a-land.html
Angela MuellerReporter-
St. Louis Business Journal
Rams owner Stan Kroenke reportedly is looking into adding to the 60-acre site he purchased in Los Angeles last year, which would give him more space for a potential NFL stadium development.Kroenke purchased a 60-acre parking lot that sits between the Forum and Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif., late last year. That property would have been sufficient for a new football stadium but not for all the parking the NFL would require.
Now Kroenke is looking into buying the entire Hollywood Park property, the L.A. Times reports. That deal would give him all the space he’d need for the stadium and required parking and ancillary services, according to the newspaper.
“And seeing as the Rams and St. Louis are about $600 million apart on how much the city, county and state should chip in for a new stadium, Kroenke’s interest in L.A. should not be underestimated,” the Times reports.
July 24, 2014 at 10:10 pm #2451c1ramParticipantHe could decide to move. My feeling is that its his preference to stay but he’s shrewd and pushing up the ante in STL. Very smart business dude. He reveals no cards at anytime – just lets others notice what he does.
July 24, 2014 at 11:37 pm #2456Ram RockParticipantAs a longtime Rams fan, since 1969, I have seen this movie before. This is shaping up eerily similar to what happened some 20 years ago with our team. I would be more suprised if the Rams stayed in St.Louis than for them to move to LA. Stan wants, IMO, what would be the new jewel of the NFL – a franchise in LA, with the Rams playing in a new super stadium like the Cowboys’ stadium. It’s too prestigious, too lucritive and to tempting for Stan not to be at the epicenter of the that, IMO.
I think it will be the LA Rams no later than 2016. But would not be surprised if it was 2015, because no owner wants to play out a full season in a what would be disasterous attendence by a rightfully upset and jilted fan base.

July 25, 2014 at 2:34 am #2463MackeyserModeratorWell, we already know that the Rose Bowl could be used for a year… potentially. The city leaders would love it and residents would hate it, but it would bring in tons of revenue to Pasadena and the NFL already has approved the Rose Bowl for Super Bowls in the past and it’s an “approved” venue in that respect.
Inglewood is a MUCH better site than Irwindale where the Raiders were considering building or the City of Industry where one of the big stadiums was looking at being built.
If you’re going to build in SoCal, you have to build near the money and that’s westside…Beverly Hills, Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica….etc. Plus, it’s not THAT far from the valley money, be it San Marino in the San Gabriel valley or Studio City in the San Fernando Valley.
I can see the Rams moving to LA, but probably not before 2017 or 2018. Takes time for these things to happen. That said, I can see the Rams, if it were to happen, moving there and playing in Pasadena in 2016.
Stadiums take time to build, especially the billion dollar, state of the art, “return to LA”, Premiere NFL showcase type stadium venues like what would likely be built.
So I expect IF…IF things go the way of LA, it will happen very deliberately.
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
July 25, 2014 at 10:53 am #2468GreatRamNTheSkyParticipantGood posts Mac and Rock. I was expecting more resistance to these stories as I received o the Herd Board but I think its pretty obvious now how this going to go.
To me it was obvous all along but of course I am biased for LA. But the financial difficulties for St Louis and the CVC cannot be ignored and the fact they are going to be bankrupt very soon doesn’t help them any. Also, yes, I beleive based upon what I have observed these past two years with the arbitration process and the statements by the CVC, the City of STl, the NFL the purchase of the land and now the story that Kroenke may just buy all of Hollywood park, there is only one good reason he does that. As you may know, before Al Davis skipped town in 95 back to Oakland, the NFL had actually approved the Hollywood Park site as a place to build a new stadium.
Most unusual of all is now the league itself is talking about funding the building of a stadium in LA. When has that ever happened? That statement by the league in of itself is monumental. I think with their network being based in LA the league very much would like to make LA the cornerstone city for league activities and perhaps they see LA as being able to handle the production of the NFL draft each spring better than NY could.
Big plans for LA it seems. Not just the Rams but the league as well Probably two teams in LA as well. My guess is Rams and Chargers with the Raiders sharing Levi Stadium in the bay area.

Well, you will get disagreement though. Not so much resistance. I personally am not that engaged in the topic; however, I personally don’t think there’s anything to it. It’s not an issue where I get drawn to discussing the details so I am just offering a general opinion based on things I saw and heard in regular discussion. I don’t think the Rams are bound for California or ever will be. I don’t see anything in this latest round of details that convinces me otherwise.

The potential move to LA making the franchise value move up.

The value of the Rams has gone up but their ranking has slipped from 40th in 2011 to 45th in 2014. Other franchises have gone up more in value and pushed the Rams ranking down 5 spots. So has the LA move thing really pushed their value up or has it held it back? Who knows.
July 25, 2014 at 3:39 pm #2496Ram RockParticipantThe reason the Rams will move to LA is the same reason they moved to St Louis – $$MONEY$$
Georgia, at the time, moved the Rams to St.Louis for what was a extremely lucrative deal for her and basically a one sided deal that favored her and the Rams. St.Louis, not so much. $$MONEY$$ All profit for her.
Stan, let’s not forget, is a big time business man. In the top of the top when it comes to making money in this country. It’s all about money for him. It’s not about a loyalty to a city or area of the country. He’s sees what is the big prize of the NFL in the future – and it’s a franchise in LA. No way he passes up that opportunity when he is positioned perfectly to make that move. Big time $$MONEY$$ awaits Stan in LA and in it’s diverse income revenue streams.

Well there are very good accounts of this whole issue which demonstrate that moving to LA would cost SK more money than he would get by staying put.
There’s a whole lot that factors into this. It’s just not that easy to discuss. Which is why I don’t discuss it, generally–there’s too much heavy lifting and too many far-flung details to bring to it.
So rather than discuss it I just drop an occasional “IMO Bomb” and meander away.

July 26, 2014 at 12:32 am #2538Ram RockParticipantI agree wv, that Georgia and Stan are polar opposites in 99.9 percent in about who they are. But both had/have a love of money. Georgia in a “gold digger” way, devoid of any true capitalistic skills to earn her fortune other than marrying Carrol R. and surrounding herself with lawyers and accountants. Stan on the other hand is corporate america incarnate! Don’t let that hokey, “I am from the midwest” fool you, the only loyalty he has is to making loads and loads of cash. He and his wife (of the Walton family) are top of the food chain corporate billionare capitalists loyal to the accumulation of money. Sadly, St.Louis fans will see that reality in the next couple years.
Guys like silent Stan don’t get to where they are by being satisfied with status quo and middle of the pack status among the NFL’s billionaire club having a franchise in St.Louis. That club is a paternalistic good ole boy network where each owner’s team is an extention of his/their manhood. No amount of financial “Viagra” from St.Louis is going to make up for the “Big Stick” Stan will have once he moves the Rams to LA.
Question is: Who is gonna win the sword fight between him and Jerry Jones for biggest stick?! π LOL

Well my statement was, that I saw it a certain way. Basically, as not invested in the issue and not wanting to get bogged down in it but as skeptical that they will move.
I also read people who have very good arguments and dozens of reasons why they won’t. That tends to happen on the PD board, among the (faction) of good posters there. Well-informed people with good arguments, too.
I’m officially a neutral on it because I am a nomad, neither in S.Cal nor St.Louis, and so only have drive-by opinions on the issue. I also notice that quite often the topic can become heated, because of the passions it causes, so I tend to stay out of it.
So really, I just delivered a “kwik view” and that was it. I just don’t post much about this, and probably won’t in the forseeable future.
Fair enough?
July 27, 2014 at 3:42 pm #2656GreatRamNTheSkyParticipantFirst of all ZN where is the money coming from in St Louis or the State of Missouri to build the Rams a new stadium? The CVC has no money and in fact is going bankrupt. The city of St. Louis has no money and is tied to the CVC. The State and the Governor has stated multiple times there is no money available from the state budget to build a new stadium. Any public monies to be used for a new stadium would come from taxes and that would have to be voted upon by a public vote. Keep in mind that millions are still being paid annually on the original loan for the Edward Jones Dome.
The Rams are ranked either 30th or 31st out of 32 NFL teams in franchise value. Even the Kansas City Chiefs just up the interstate are worth more. When Kroenke moves the franchise to LA its value will go up tremendously. You have paid attention to the fact that the Dodgers sold for 2 billion dollars and the LA Clippers were offered 2 billion dollars just recently? This is not lost on the owners in the NFL or Kroenke.
When Kroenke purchased the 60 acres in Inglewood, CA at the start of the year he reported it to the league. If this was just a purchase of commercial real estate the league does not require him to report it. However if the site is intended for a possible new stadium location then they are required to report to the league. Just this past week Sam Farmer of the LA times and the St Louis Business Journal both confirmed that Stan is looking into buying all of the Hollywood Park land. As you may or may not know the Hollywood park site has been coveted by the league as a possible stadium site for a long time. Al Davis reportedly had received approval from the league in 1995 to build a stadium there.
And as far as Kroenke caring about what the people of St. Louis think about him? Well, keep in mind that he has refused to speak to the media in St. Louis and not once has let it be known either way verbally where his leanings are emotionally. If Stan was concerned about this then all he would have to do is make a statement that he loves St Louis and would like to stay there. He never has.
So, the Rams are getting closer to the end of their lease, Kroenke has bought land suitable for a new stadium and is reportedly interested in buying more land next to it. The CVC is broke and going bankrupt and there are no public funds for a new stadium. And nobody from the corporate side in St. Louis has stepped forward to offer backing for a new stadium and there is no sites for a new stadium in St Louis are have either been purchased by Kroenke or even began the approval processes. Lets not forget that the league is not talking about building a stadium in LA.
One more thing. We have seen these past few years where the Commissioner has voiced strong support for the Viking s staying in Minnesota and the Bills staying in Buffalo and just recently suggested the Raiders share Levi Stadium with the 49ers. We have not seen any such statements from Goodell or the league regarding the Rams.
We shall see how it goes but, I think the pros outweigh the cons in favor of the Rams being in LA very soon.
July 27, 2014 at 3:44 pm #2657znModeratorFirst of all ZN where is the money coming from

July 27, 2014 at 8:35 pm #2677TSRFParticipantI am not SOKA, but I’ll discuss this with you.
It’s kind of a foregone conclusion that LA will get (at least one) NFL team.
1) Why a re-tread? wouldn’t it be better with a fresh start (maybe the Bills become the LA Explosion)?
2) If StL loses the Rams, would they EVER get another NFL team?
Like Zack, I really don’t have a dog in this fight; I root for the horns and always have. ESPN got me going during the last move with talk of the “Hartford Rams”. I would have been a season ticket holder!
Short of that, I side with stability. The team has roots in StL, and I think it is in their long term interest to stay there.
I wouldn’t be surprised if “Silent Stan” moves the team to LA, I just hope he doesn’t.
July 28, 2014 at 4:13 pm #2740joemadParticipantback in 94 when talks of the RAMS leaving So Cal for Baltimore, Hartford or STL…. I remember thinking team value in these smaller markets…… no way that the RAMS would be worth more in the long term in these markets… that’s why I thought the RAMS would never leave So Cal for these markets….
Nonetheless…..Stan was instrumental in getting the RAMS to move to STL rather than Balt or Hartford………. not sure if Stan wanted a team in STL, or if he was looking long term for sole NFL ownership of the team, or both….. Congratss to Georgia and Shaw for stuffin their own pockets with a short term business plan.
Stan’s M.O. in team ownership with the Arsenal and The Nuggets is owning the venue that the team plays in.. If the CVC is broke, I would think STL is open to Stan owning the venue……… Despite Stan buying land in So Cal, i’m not sure if LA or the NFL is open to venue ownership in So Cal as Stan has with the Arsenal and Nuggets.
So Cal needs to lure and continue to sell the market value of having an NFL team in LA to Stan and allow Stan to own the facility for his RAMS to play in. …i’m not sure So Cal can group and ralley the local city entities to do that….
I think most business minded folks would see the benefits of having an NFL team in the 2nd largest market in the country opposed the 18th market, but it depends how motivated these places are to lure or to keep Stan.
July 29, 2014 at 1:22 pm #2784GreatRamNTheSkyParticipantStan is a business man. Joemad, SoCal is rallying and has been for the last few years. Stan didn’t buy 60 acres of prime land and report it to the league because it was just a commercial real estate purchase. And now he’s reported to be attempting to buy all of the Hollywood Park land. And you’re right, most speaking from a logical business standpoint see the advantage to being in LA. Also, what does Stan have as motivation for staying in St Louis? Not a great deal from what I can see. Let me just state again that the league and the Commissioner have made no overtures or statements which express a desire to keep the Rams in St Louis. They have expressed the thought of the league building their own stadium in LA and when is the last time we have heard the NFL ever say that? Also with Stan we now have an NFL owner who 1. Has purchased significant land suitable for a stadium in LA. 2. Owns a team who’s lease expires at the end of this season. 3.Has the financial where with all to make this move and build this stadium himself. 4.Seems to have the backing of the league according to recent statements by both Goodell, Robert Kraft and Jerry Jones. Both Kraft and Goodell spoke on behalf of the league. They were not just talking for themselves.
Stay tuned!
