znModeratorfrom Mike Jones, Ted Nguyen, and Dan Pompei: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6608642/2025/09/07/nfl-takeaways-week-1-aaron-rodgers-russell-wilson/?source=dailyemail&campaign=601983&userId=603890&source=dailyemail
How do you assess the NFC West race after the 49ers escaped the Seahawks and the Rams and Cardinals started 1-0?
Nguyen: Too early to tell. The Cardinals beat a bad Saints team but the Rams, Seahawks and 49ers all played against tough competition. The Rams beat the Texans, who were a playoff team last year and have one of the best defenses in the league, and the 49ers and Seahawks played each other in a back-and-forth game that ended with a 49ers win after Sam Darnold fumbled the ball on his tackle’s butt in the red zone. The 49ers probably have a step on the rest with a divisional win on the road.
Jones: I think the only conclusion that we can take away after one week is that the NFC West very well could go down to the wire. Each of these four teams’ performances showed both promise and the need for improvement. All of them have the potential to be really solid, but I don’t think there’s one clear-cut leader of the pack. We will likely see divisional lead changes every couple of weeks and then a fight to the finish for the crown and playoff spots.
Pompei: This is not a division that will be decided in the first week of the season, or probably the 17th week. The bet here is the NFC West will come down to the final week of play, when the Cardinals and Rams square off and the Seahawks play the 49ers. It remains to be seen if the Cardinals have what it takes, but the other three teams all could win the division, or at least make the playoffs. A healthy Matthew Stafford could give the Rams the edge.

QB Matthew Stafford: 92.9
WR Puka Nacua: 91.6
RG Kevin Dotson: 75.4
OL Beaux Limmer: 70.7
LG Steve Avila: 69.7Looking for a free mini puzzle? Play the USA TODAY Quick Cross now.
Stafford was outstanding in this one, silencing any concerns about his bad back. He made five big-time throws and didn’t have a single turnover-worthy play, putting together a clean performance from start to finish.Nacua caught 10 of his 11 passes and forced three missed tackles, picking up seven first downs in the game.
Dotson, Limmer and Avila all stood out on the interior, mostly for their run blocking. Limmer’s 89.9 run-blocking grade was the only Rams player with a grade higher than 72 in that department. Limmer and Dotson each allowed two pressures, and Avila gave up none.

Rams had the seventh-highest defensive pressure rate in Week 1, via Next Gen Stats
The Rams pressured quarterback C.J. Stroud on 41.2% of his dropbacks on Sunday. Reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse led the way with four, while safety Quentin Lake, outside linebacker Byron Young and inside linebacker Omar Speights all registered two.
Seven other players tied with one, including safety Jaylen McCollough and defensive end Tyler Davis, who both collected sacks along with Young. L.A. ranked ninth in sack rate at 8.8%.
Matthew Stafford had a 145.0 passer rating on 11 play-action pass dropbacks, via Next Gen Stats
Play-action passing is a cornerstone of the Rams’ offense, and Stafford was nearly flawless when they ran it on Sunday (13.3 points away from a perfect passer rating, to be exact). He completed nine of 10 play-action pass attempts for 108 yards and a touchdown.
Head coach Sean McVay said postgame that Stafford was “in great command all day,” and his elite execution off play-action fakes was an integral part of that success.

When @NateAtkins_ asked Cobie Durant this morning how the defense was able to take away Nico Collins (3 catches for 25 yards), he credited the defensive line:“Our defensive line putting pressure on the quarterback allowed us to play sticky (coverage).”

znModeratorPuka Nacua’s third season in the NFL got off to a hot start. The young receiver caught 10 of his 11 targets for 130 scoreless yards, including a key fourth-down catch late in the fourth quarter to seal the Week 1 win over the Houston Texans.
The performance also broke a key team record. Nacua passed Los Angeles Rams legend Torry Holt as the fastest player in franchise history to eclipse 2,500 career receiving yards. Nacua reached that mark in just 25 career games. Holt’s record had previously been 33 games.

znModeratorAhkello Witherspoon locked down Nico Collins, only allowing one catch for 4 yards on two targets. He only gave up two catches for 5 yards in the entire game, showing he’s the Rams’ CB1 on the outside. Emmanuel Forbes Jr. played well, too, giving up just one catch for 1 yard.
Cobie Durant was the third cornerback and he made one of the plays of the game when he intercepted C.J. Stroud, snatching the ball away from the receiver. This was an outstanding start to the year for the cornerback group.

2 catches for 5 yards?
That’s what the starting corners gave up?
Holy shit.
