Rams RT Rob Havenstein said the offensive line had a closed-door, players-only meeting this morning. He started off the meeting.

“Our mindset the last couple of games hasn’t been right. And that’s something we are going to address at practice.”

Havenstein said the meeting gave offensive linemen a chance to speak their minds.

“You kind of sit back and wonder ‘why’. At this point, can’t do anything about it. It’s just something that’s got to be fixed. That’s going to start with me.”

He said in his press conference that he was disappointed in his own performance. Wasn’t trying to deflect blame from himself

rams dropped from 25th to 29th in offensive scoring after sunday’s games, only the broncos, steelers and colts have scored less.

on the other hand the rams defense ranks 12th in offensive points allowed.

Because the Rams haven’t had OL continuity, Sean McVay says they’re not opposed to changing things up. There are newer players who they are learning more about, he says (such as Aboushi, Skura). “We’re looking for any and all solutions that we think are best.”

Rams rank 31st in EPA in first down this season at -0.155 ahead of only the Bengals.

40.4% overall success rate ranks 21st.

Rushing success rate of 30% ranks 28th.

Makes it harder on the OL when playing from behind the sticks and you live in 3rd-and-long.

The Rams’ 84 pressures given up through five weeks is their most in the PFF-era. Closest was the 2007 Rams that allowed 72.

    2020 – 27.2
    2021 – 28.2
    2022 – 16.0

Cam Akers has more games with less than 1 yard per carry than he has games with 100 scrimmage yards.

McVay: “In a lot of the instances the last couple of weeks, some of the mental mistakes that have occurred that have never been reflected in the last five years of how we’ve operated have reared its ugly head. That on coaching that’s on me.”

Yes, the Rams are still working to find solid footing for their offense. In that problem-solving mode, asked McVay today if he expects org to still be aggressive in exploring options, including those outside building: “Yeah, that’s always something that we’re exploring. But
    .
I think the main focus and concentration right now is figuring out how to adjust and adapt with all of our moving parts.”

It’s not an entirely fair or valid comparison because in 2007, while their OL was damaged early and often, the Rams could still run the ball with Jackson in most of the first 5 games.

In their first 5 games of 2007, the Rams had 458 yards rushing, including 2 100+ yard games, with an average of 90.9 yards per game. Jackson just made a difference, you had to defend him no matter what, so there was less pressure by a certain small percentage.

In 2022, it’s 312 yards rushing in 5 games, or an avg. of 62.5 yards per game. That of course means a bit more pressure. In 2022, teams, as we know and can clearly see, can afford to play pass first against the Rams without defending the run the way you would if they had an in-his-prime Jackson.

That basically averages out to 2.4 more pressures per game in 2022 as opposed to 2007, fwiw.

I see him more as a head figure.

LA Rams Transactions: • Signed to Active Roster C Matt Skura • Reserve/Injured G David Edwards • Waived, No Recall RB Jake Funk

Rams offense arguably looked at its best this season against ARI. Ran play-action on 40% of dropbacks in that game. That dropped to 19.6% against SF and 14.9% against DAL. Play-action is a good way to help the OL.
    .
David Edwards headed to IR is probably the right move. Get him healthy and bring him back later in the year after the bye. It’s also the fifth offensive linemen to go on IR. Hopefully Aboushi can start soon. Gonna need therapy if it’s Bobby Evans.

Rams currently have 4 interior OL on IR, including both starting OGs, and the starting C out with injury too. Both OTs have picked up injuries during games. Might be a good idea to retire the empty backfield set for a little while.

OC Liam Coen says amount of mental errors, busts in protection/missed calls and in general are “a little bit foreign” to the history of this offense. But, he adds, the effort is there. It’s not an effort question. “It’s not that we don’t play hard. We’re just not playing very
    .
smart. We’re kicking ourselves in the butt, in a lot of instances.” Coen said players have taken more ownership of meetings – mentioned protection meeting especially – this week. “No waver in confidence” from players, coaches that it’ll get fixed.
    .
Vague so wanted to clarify: I don’t think this group can’t block or protect. I think the issue is coming from crazy turnover of personnel and miscommunications or missed calls. Which gels with Rob Havenstein’s “mindset” comment; McVay’s “free rusher”/”errors” comment.
    .
Again, idk a team in the league w a 53 man cap and financial cap that would be prepared to reach this deep for iOL, and injuries can’t be predicted so most teams build toward the mean. Next couple weeks will come down to coaching in practice, meetings and live in games.
