What we learned from Week 1

    Kevin Jairaj, USA Today

Where do we even start? Welp, let’s start with Dak Prescott and the Cowboys. Did you stay up and hear the news? No worries. We did.

The quarterback exited last night’s 19-3 loss to the Buccaneers midway through the fourth quarter with a hand injury. He’ll undergo surgery and miss a number of weeks, team owner Jerry Jones said. Dallas will turn to backup Cooper Rush in Dak’s absence. Can Rush keep the season afloat, or should the Cowboys consider a more drastic move? Decision time.

    Other early takeaways:

    Relax, it’s Week 1 😐

    • Bengals QB Joe Burrow had an uncharacteristically bad game in an overtime loss to the Steelers: I mean, four interceptions?! But had it not been for a last-second blocked extra point attempt, we wouldn’t even be here. It happens.
    • The Packers’ young receivers may drive Aaron Rodgers into retirement, but Green Bay is also a chronic slow starter at this point. In three of their four years under Matt LaFleur, the Packers have scored 10, 3 and 7 points in Week 1.

    As good as advertised 🤯

    • Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs sent the rest of the NFL a message with his 360 passing yards and five touchdowns in a 44-21 win over the Cardinals. In the first game of the post-Tyreek Hill era, the QB connected with nine different skill-position teammates over his 30 completions. Whew.
    • As previously recapped, Josh Allen looked like his MVP-caliber self in the Bills’ season opener Thursday, passing for 297 yards and three TDs in an efficient 31-10 win over the Rams.

    Clock Mismanagement

    Geno’s Revenge

    Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Russell Wilson returned to Seattle with what we expected to be a far superior Broncos team to the Seahawks squad he left behind. A baffling night — and an ugly 17-16 Seattle win — tossed those preconceptions in the trash.

A few things that actually happened:

    • Geno Smith, Wilson’s former backup, started 17-of-18 through the air and finished 23-of-28 for 195 yards and two touchdowns. He was crisp and efficient, in both the passing and quote game. “They wrote me off. I ain’t write back, though,” he said afterward.
    • The Broncos fumbled twice on the Seattle 1-yard line.
    • New Denver coach Nathaniel Hackett will be lambasted in today’s news cycle after wasting 30 seconds at the end of the game with good field position … all to attempt a 64-yard game-winning field goal. Hilariously, Brandon McManus had two tries after the Seahawks called a timeout just before his first attempt sailed wide left. His second attempt did the same. Peyton Manning almost had an aneurysm on air thanks to the sequence.
    • Wilson, arguably the best player in Seahawks franchise history, got booed before his first snap Monday.

Gotta say, its strange that you go out and get Russell Wilson, and there he is with a Fourth and Five, and…you kick a 64 yard FG.

The Seahawks won, so give them credit for finding a way, but whew.. They had everything go their way. Gave up 433 yards to the Broncos, and didn’t do anything offensively after halftime. It took two fumbles from the 1, a number of dumb penalties, and a terrible decision to win

That’s my thought. Why would you give a guy a billion dollars, and then sit him in that situation when kickers are 2/42 over the years on 64-yard attempts? Surely, the odds are much higher that Wilson is going to get those 5 yards somehow, some way.
