Colin Cowherd and Mike Silver say the #49ers are worried about Trey Lance and a big reason Jimmy Garoppolo is still on the roster. #FTTB pic.twitter.com/PaLyd6jZaE

July 8, 2022 at 10:53 am #139582wvParticipantI would like to see Jimmy G on another team. Just because I’m curious.
I have no idea if he is a product of a Shannahan system or if he is a solid talent or what. I’d like to see what he can do on a different team. I’ve always assessed him as ‘average qb’ but I dunno.

July 8, 2022 at 12:11 pm #139584znModeratorJuly 8, 2022 at 3:36 pm #139586ZooeyModeratorOn the 9ers and JimmyG. Again, the 9ers are screwed on this.
I won’t believe the “doubt” narrative on Lance until I see him flounder as the starter, or if the 9ers keep JG, and start him over Lance. I don’t believe the 9ers. This team had “unnamed sources” claiming the 9ers had received an offer of 2 first round picks for JG back in February. And I called BS on that at the time. That was bait for QB-needy teams to make a high offer. If anybody had offered that, he would have been traded already. The 9ers thought they could parlay him and reap a bounty. Didn’t happen.
I think the 9ers are trying to increase his trade potential now by feigning reluctance to move him.
In any event, JimmyG was emotionally “out of there” at the end of the season. He said “Goodbye” to all his teammates. He believes he is done there, and that is from a guy in the QB room with Lance all year long. This is not Joe Montana holding on in spite of sharing the QB room with Steve Young. JG has folded. He has packed his bags, and is waiting for the bus. It’s obviously possible they keep him, but Shanahan is going to have a hard time convincing him that he has confidence in him. The 9ers are a little bit broken right now.
They probably have Cleveland as their #1 mark, and we will see what happens when the Watson punishment gets doled out. If Watson gets a short suspension, or none at all, the Browns are out of the JimmyG market. If he gets 10+ games, then…maybe they will kick the tires on JG. But the 9ers are running out of potential trade destinations, and the clock is running down.
I think they are going to get very little or nothing for Garrapolo, or start the season with tension between QB and coaches. They’re screwed. Love to see it.

It includes the famous separated shoulder pass he threw as a rookie.
July 9, 2022 at 12:05 pm #139608znModeratorTrey Lance vs Houston (I know, it's the Texans) was a really nice showcase for what he offers vs Garoppolo. Deep throwing ability, mobility putting LBs in conflict, and, as shown here, the physical tools to troubleshoot when s**t isn't optimal. pic.twitter.com/18Ch10uyT8

July 10, 2022 at 3:38 pm #139622ZooeyModeratorBTW, Las Vegas has the over/under on Trey Lance TD throws at 21.5
I would think Vegas wouldn’t have that line if they hadn’t talked to people-in-the-know in San Francisco.
July 15, 2022 at 1:19 am #139682ZooeyModeratorYeah, I don’t think Seattle is going to trade for a QB. They are in a tear down right now. They can ride with Lock and win 3 games, and get one of the top 3 QBs in the draft next year, or a bunch of capital in exchange for that high pick. Why would they want to give up assets for Jimmy G, and win 6 or 7 games?
The Browns make a little sense, but they aren’t going to give up much. A conditional late round pick, maybe.
July 15, 2022 at 2:22 pm #139691wvParticipantI just wouldnt want to get rid of Jimmy G at all this year, if were a 49er decider. They are in a win-Now mode if they keep both, for all the obvious reasons. Just let Jimmy G sit on the bench and be the battle-tested super-sub if needed.
To boldly go with Lance, just seems like a big roll of the dice to me. Why do it? Unless they absolutely have to because of cap issues.
If I were a 49er fan, i sure as hell would want both unless and until Lance proves he’s the guy on the field.

July 24, 2022 at 8:52 am #139774znModeratorNFC WEST PLAYERS
from PFF:
The 50 best players in the NFL right now
https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-pff50-ranking-50-best-players-2022
…
2. T TRENT WILLIAMS, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
Williams had a season for the ages in 2021, finishing with a 97.8 overall PFF grade on a scale that only goes up to 100. His run-blocking tape was an endless clinic of dominance, showcasing a peerless combination of technique, speed, agility, pure strength and power. We may never see that level of run-blocking dominance over a single season again. As a pass blocker, he allowed 16 pressures in 15 games.
20. TE George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers
Deebo Samuel stole the show for the 49ers’ offense last season, but when he was out of the lineup, Kittle continued to dominate like few tight ends the game has ever seen. He led the position in yards per route run (2.35), and the three games in which he saw double-digit targets netted 372 yards and three touchdowns.
26. EDGE NICK BOSA, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
Bosa bounced back from a knee injury in 2020 to resume his career as a game-changing edge rusher. He posted 75 total pressures, 39 defensive stops and a career-best 89.8 PFF pass-rushing grade in 2021. Bosa has elite speed around the edge and the power to cause frequent problems for opposing tackles.
28. WR DEEBO SAMUEL, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
Samuel is a unique weapon in today’s NFL — a hybrid player who is capable of excelling as a wideout but then moving into the backfield and taking handoffs as a running back. Only Kupp gained more yards per route run than Samuel’s 2.93, and Deebo added another 500 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground (including the playoffs).
30. LB FRED WARNER, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
Warner wasn’t as dominant in 2021 as in the year before, but he still remains an elite player at the position and one of the best coverage linebackers in the game. Warner recorded 77.0-plus PFF grades in every facet of play except as a pass rusher, where he notched eight pressures across 48 blitzes. This season will be important for him to see where his baseline of play truly lies.
31. WR DEANDRE HOPKINS, ARIZONA CARDINALS
An injury cost Hopkins much of the 2021 season, and a suspension will cost him the beginning of the upcoming one. Before that, we saw a four-year stretch where he was as good as any receiver in the game. Hopkins dropped just nine passes over the past four seasons and caught at least 45% of contested targets in each of those years, and he continues to dominate despite the Cardinals’ offense doing little to scheme him favorable matchups.
July 25, 2022 at 1:48 pm #139787znModeratorTurfShowTimes@TurfShowTimes
Reminder that even after the last 20 years with Manning, Brees, Brady, Rodgers, etc in a passing league, Jerry Rice still has 5,400 more receiving yards than 2nd-place Fitzgerald. And 9,500 more yards than the closest active player, Julio Jones.SeattleRams@seattlerams_nfl
If you eliminate the roughly 3600 yards from the four seasons with the Raiders and Seahawks, taking only the SF years in account, his numbers are still number one. Unreal.July 26, 2022 at 1:29 pm #139808znModeratorIf you would have told me three years ago that Tom Brady would become more likable, and Aaron Rodgers would become more unlikable, I would have thought you had lost your mind… Yet, here we are. https://t.co/QuXCd5o6Ox

July 27, 2022 at 11:09 am #139821znModeratorA defensive coach had some criticism on Patrick Mahomes' game. 😳 pic.twitter.com/6AGAooTFBk
— theScore (@theScore) July 26, 2022
July 27, 2022 at 2:06 pm #139822wvParticipantThe comment about Mahomes is interesting because I was thinking something similar about Kyler. I watched a vid of K. Murray and the talking heads were going on and on and on about one play he made where he ran around and made a ton of defenders miss and then he launched a strike to a WR. And the talking heads were saying he’s a ‘generational’ talent and very few humans could do such a thing etc.
And i used to be the same way. I’d see a Michael Vick play, or an RG3 play or Lamar Jackson, etc and I’d think, “OMG, this is a great QB, and they are gonna win a gazillion super bowls and the Rams will never have anyone like that…”
But then I started wising up. Because I started to understand, Yes, those guys can make spectacular plays. Incredible highlight plays. But what did they do on…the next play. And the next. And the next. We know what Tom Brady will do on the next play. And the next. He’ll carve you up. And so will Stafford.
So…I’m still impressed by the super-wild-keystone-cops plays. But I’m wiser now. I see that what matters MORE is can you make the clutch plays on third down, against TOP defenses, in the playoffs. Over and over. Clutch play after clutch play. Cuz thats what it usually takes.
I doubt Kyler Murray can do that. I kinda doubt Lamar Jackson can do it, either, but I dunno. Mahomes has already won a Ring. But the league may be catching up to him just a bit.
I’ll take Stafford over any of the spectacular-QBs at this point. As long as he’s healthy.
I still like QBs that can move, but the consistent pocket accuracy in the clutch has to be there. And its rare to have it ‘all’ — Like Roger Staubach. Or Steve Young.
