It was reported earlier that OBJ won’t sign until Sunday. With Ramsey’s recent tweet & McVay fighting to hold back his smile in his presser — it’s going to be reaaaally tough to wait.

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
Rams starting receiving corps will be (in no order): Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, Van Jefferson, Odell Beckham Jr…sprinkle a little Tyler Higbee in there for good measure.

    Jay Glazer@JayGlazer
Rams continue loading up. @obj has long wanted to play there and now gets his wish

This is far from an ‘all-in’ move by the Rams.

The whole point of being ‘all-in’ is you’re risking your entire stack/bankroll on one hand.

What’s the risk here with OBJ?

They’re picking up a talented WR for peanuts.

Rams are signing Odell Beckham Jr. to 1-year deal

    Cameron DaSilva

    * https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2021/11/11/rams-odell-beckham-contract-year-signing/

It seemed like the Rams pushed all their chips into the middle of the table when they acquired Von Miller, but they still had a few left in front of them. They’ve agreed to terms a contract with Odell Beckham Jr., who was a free agent after being waived by the Browns last week.

The team made the news official on Thursday after there was a flurry of conflicting reports about whether Beckham was actually heading to the Rams.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, who was first to report the Rams were finalizing a deal with Beckham, it’s a one-year deal for Beckham. The exact terms of the contract have not yet been disclosed, but given the Rams’ lack of cap space, it’s not likely to be a very expensive contract for the remainder of the season.

I think this is a smart move by the Rams. Making it a one-year audition will help with morale among the receivers, especially Jefferson. They shouldn’t be concerned that OBJ will be usurping their roles, cuz this is basically a one and done deal. It’s a Super Bowl or bust thing, and he’s likely only here for half a year.

It’s also apparently not for much money, and the Rams should receive a comp pick if OBJ doesn’t re-sign with them next season. That’s huge, IMO.

Unless . . . unless there is some kind of rule that says mid-season deals don’t qualify.

    I have no idea.

Opposing defenses are going to be in turmoil as to which guy to double. Should free up Cupp and Woods and Jefferson to be even more effective. The talking heads on NFL Today were saying OBJ may well be the third or fourth guy and get the third or fourth corner, etc. They loved the move in general, but they said the Rams must win this year. Must. Win. Now.

    https://www.acmepackingcompany.com/2021/11/10/22774503/packers-offer-odell-beckham-jr-a-veteran-minimum-contract-per-report

If Odell Beckham, Jr. wants to play for the Green Bay Packers and catch footballs from Aaron Rodgers, he now has an offer on the table.

That is the word out of 1265 Lombardi Avenue on Wednesday morning. Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel beat writer Tom Silverstein has reported that the Packers extended a contract offer to Beckham for the veteran minimum salary, which for 2021 is $1.075 million over a full season.

Given the context of Beckham’s contract with the Cleveland Browns, which was just terminated when he cleared waivers on Tuesday, the Packers and other teams around the NFL have no reason to offer him more than that minimum. This is because his Browns contract has offset language in it, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. The Browns owe Beckham $4.25 million (down from $7.25 million, thanks to a deal they made with him prior to waiving him), but the amount Cleveland owes will be reduced by whatever compensation he receives from a new team over the remainder of this season.

Therefore, Beckham will get paid the same amount whether he were to sign in Green Bay for the veteran minimum or elsewhere, unless another team signs him to a contract worth more than the $4.25 million that the Browns owe. Practically speaking, unless a team is willing to pay several million dollars to employ Beckham for the remaining eight games of the season, there is no incentive for a team to offer more than the league minimum. Should he receive only league-minimum offers, that would force him to make a decision purely based on non-monetary factors.

The Salary Cap cost is one half years vet minimum, so no worries about the Cap. imo

i don’t dislike him. but where are his touches going to come from? not cooper. not robert. and he certainly doesn’t block like those two. van? i assume that he’s a willing blocker. is obj willing to block? i would think that’s what it would take to get touches on van. i don’t know. i’m a little skeptical about how he will fit in.

    Fascinating

Only cost is a small amount of potential cap space we could roll over into next year. Should bring a comp pick the next year when we don’t resign him.

Need to give Stafford just enough time and they would have a lethal WR corps.

what would really excite me is if cam akers comes back which is a possibility for the playoffs. not sure how effective he’d be though. short-term or long-term.

To me, its real simple — is he, or is he not,
    better than van jefferson?

If he is better than VJ, then you sign OBJ.

Now, if you were a DC, would you rather face,
    Kupp, Woods and VJ,
    or
    Kupp, Woods, and OBJ ?

I’ll take OBJ over VJ any day.

Well, as long as there is no negative impact on the locker room, I’m fine with it. I don’t care if he doesn’t contribute anything. I just don’t want him doing damage. Of course, they could cut him, I guess.

If he’s any good…he does create more pressure on the secondary. And is an insurance policy against injury to any of the top trio.

And I will say that the Rams having him means the Packers and Saints don’t have him. And that’s good because I think he would be a bigger difference-maker to those teams than he will be to the Rams. With those teams – again, if he’s any good – he would add more value because they have a bigger need for a very good WR. So if paying him the vet minimum achieves nothing but removing a target for a potential playoff opponent, well…that’s fine by me.

Maybe somebody knows…I thought I read somewhere that there is a maximum number of compensatory picks a team can receive, and the Rams are already at that ceiling. If true, they don’t get another pick for OBJ.

Well, its just half of one season. How much damage could he do?

Took him years to stir shit in Cleveland.

The Rams seem to have some solid leaders. I think they can
handle OBJ. Plus, OBJ has a chance to win a Ring, and show
teams he can be a good team-mate. Its in HIS interest
to be a team-player for now.

OBJ goes on 2023, not next year. There is some question if the money the Rams pay him will affect his qualifying for a comp pick.

I think it should be mentioned that OBJ has a stronger arm then Stafford . Imagine if you will Stafford rips a laser to OBJ on the edge and OBJ uncorks a 70 yr bomb to Jefferson who has blown past cb 4 This is a risk free move , they don’t need to even activate him if there’s a chance of hurting the team and if he’s finally happy and flourishes could mean Rams playing in Sofi in February. Is he a head case? His teammates say no ,he has a house in LA several Rams are friends with him and after Djax Atwell Harris all history this season we were paper thin at wr .If we don’t resign him next year we get a pick if he goes somewhere else. What’s not to love?

well just reading around, jefferson is supposed to be a very good run blocker. and in this system receivers are expected to block. but i did find this clip of obj laying down a hellish block on a linebacker.

    https://www.clevelandbrowns.com/video/odell-beckham-jr-lays-the-hammer-down-for-amazing-block

and in this article, the coaches talk about his blocking and drawing coverages. so maybe they don’t lose much with obj in there in the blocking department.

Odell Beckham Jr. wants the ball, but he wants a championship even more and is proving it by blocking and being a decoy

The play in which Beckham drew triple coverage and Higgins was left wide open for a 7-yard touchdown in the second quarter encapsulates the last couple of games for Beckham. He didn’t catch as many passes as anyone would like but still made an impact.

“I know the production hasn’t been there for him, and I’m not worried about that. I do think it will come. But it’s the other stuff that he does really, and in the run game, I know it’s not sexy, but he was really effective. He really came down and really put the wood to a couple of those safeties in the game.”

The #Rams gave WR Odell Beckham Jr a 1-year deal worth up to $4.25M, source said.
    Details:
    — $500K signing bonus
    — $750K for the rest of the season
    — Another $3M available in team-based incentives for how they finish the regular season and the postseason.

What Odell Beckham Jr. brings to the Rams

    Cameron DaSilva

    * https://theramswire.usatoday.com/lists/rams-odell-beckham-analysis-offense-fit/

The Rams didn’t necessarily need to add a star wide receiver. They already had the league’s leading wideout, Cooper Kupp, as well as Robert Woods and Van Jefferson. But with DeSean Jackson being cut and Tutu Atwell on injured reserve, they saw a void that could be filled.

And so they went out and added Odell Beckham Jr., who has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Rams. He’s the latest Pro Bowler to arrive in Los Angeles, giving Matthew Stafford yet another weapon to throw to.

While he may not be the Beckham that dominated for the Giants years ago, he’s still a player who threatens a defense at all levels of the field. Here’s more of what he brings to the Rams, bolstering what’s now the best receiving corps in football.

    Downfield explosiveness
Cooper Kupp isn’t the fastest receiver, nor is he necessarily a deep threat. Robert Woods has some speed but he’s not seen as a field-stretcher, either. The same goes for Van Jefferson, who has downfield speed but doesn’t bring the explosiveness that Beckham has.

With Beckham, the Rams get a combination of a receiver who can threaten a defense deep but also turn a short pass into a big play. Cornerbacks have to account for his speed on every play because when utilized correctly, he can excel as a deep threat on the outside.

    Speed after the catch
Beckham can use his 4.3 speed in a variety of ways. Not only can he stretch the field vertically, but he can also rack up the yards after the catch, similar to the way Kupp and Woods do. That’s a huge asset for a quarterback because as long as Stafford puts the ball in the right spot, Beckham can make a big play.

Whether it’s on drag routes, slants, screens or crossers, Beckham can erase angles from defenders and create explosive plays after the catch with his quickness. Kupp, Woods and Jefferson are good athletes, but they don’t have the speed and quickness that Beckham does in the open field.

    Jump-ball ability
Beckham was a dynamic athlete at LSU and continued to show that with the Rams, utilizing all of his 38.5-inch vertical to make plays above the rim, so to speak. He’s got a big catch radius and while he may not be the most physical receiver, he can still elevate over defenders to make plays.

The Rams have lacked a true jump-ball receiver under Sean McVay but now have someone who can win on fades and high-point the ball on throws from Stafford. Jefferson has had some success in that department and Jacob Harris was supposed to help, but Beckham is now the best wideout on the team in those scenarios.

Someone to take pressure off of Cooper Kupp
The Cardinals are really the only team that has keyed on Kupp and truly slowed him down. As the season goes on, it’s likely more defenses will figure out ways to do that, but that’ll be tougher to do with Beckham in the mix.

Now, defenses not only have to account for Woods and Jefferson, but also Beckham when he’s on the field. With his speed, safeties will play over the top more and open things up for Kupp underneath and on intermediate routes.

McVay is a brilliant play designer and will come up with route combinations to put defenders in a bind because locking down Kupp and Beckham will be incredibly tough to do

There’s a vid out there on utube, where one of the celebrity-idiots
talks about Jalen Ramsey talking to OBJ on the phone, and at one point
there’s a question as to whether the rams WRs would accept OBJ, and Jalen
carries the phone into the WR room, and asks the WR’s if they want OBJ,
and they all answer enthusiastically yes.

Who knows how true that is, or whether they were being sincere,
    etc, and so forth.

But I would think anybody would accept him if they knew
it was only for half a season.

I haven’t decided if I like the OBJ signing or not yet, but there was speculation that all the hoopla over the Von Miller signing served as a distraction, and was at least partly responsible for the Rams’ poor play against the Titans. I hope they learned their lesson this week.

I’m putting the Rams on notice. I cannot be held responsible for my actions if they lose this week. I will not suffer another loss to the 9ers. I just won’t.

    ==========

Ponder what happens if Kupp gets hurt down the stretch.
    Or Woods.

Sometimes the talking-heads talk about how the rams offense
is “loaded with talent” etc. But if you really take a look at it,
    it aint that loaded.

I am with you there. If the Rams are serious…they have to take everything out on the 49ers. The loss to the Titans, and the “howmanyever” consecutive losses in a row to the 49ers.

A complete game, both sides of the ball, with the 9ers’ season effectively dead at the final gun. This is my expectation. This is my demand. It doesn’t have to be 52-0, although it can be, if they want. I want the 49ers outplayed from the opening drive to the final whistle. That is all.

And OBJ can watch from the sideline.
