    Rams in the redzone.

As it happens Goff was third in completion percentage among qbs with 35 or more attempts inside the 20. He was 7th in RZ TDs, with no INTs.

In terms of Team Red Zone Scoring Percentage (TD only), the Rams were 6th (last 3 games they were 1st). (That stat is here: https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/red-zone-scoring-pct ).

Gurley was fierce in the RZ so that has to be replaced and in fact that may be another reason why they liked Akers.

Jared Goff re: New Rams OC.

“Kevin O’Connell is awesome. I can already see he is going to be really good for us. Im excited to get on the field with him and get to work.”

    Andrew Siciliano@AndrewSiciliano
Jared Goff says more Rams teammates have recently joined his quarantine workouts. He says he’s been the “ringleader.”

“I’ve been throwing to the receivers for quite a while.”

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Rams QB Jared Goff and WR Robert Woods both said they’ve been able to do 7-on-7 work with some teammates while adhering to local public health guidelines.

Rookie RB Cam Akers and TE Brycen Hopkins were among the participants, and have impressed Goff.

“Van (Jefferson) couldn’t make it, but those two guys have been great. It’s been fun to watch them learn. They’re just both so smart and able to pick things up so fast.”

Rams RB Darrell Henderson said he would be full-go if the team could do on-field workouts right now and will be 100 percent ready for training camp. He had been spending the offseason at the team facility rehabbing a late-season ankle injury which required surgery.

Henderson has been among those participating in recent throwing/7-on-7 sessions with quarterback Jared Goff.

Rams head coach Sean McVay said the team wrapped up its virtual offseason program today. Even though clubs can go for another two weeks, he felt good about calling it based on what they were able to accomplish since April 27.

    Greg Beacham@gregbeacham
Rams coach Sean McVay on the virtual NFL offseason: “I feel great right now, but you do get more tired. You realize that you feed off people. You do draw on other people’s energy. I’m virtual-meetinged out right now.”

    Andrew Siciliano@AndrewSiciliano
“I’m not going to be at the facility until I absolutely have to.”

McVay says he may go back to the building next week, but doesn’t mind working from home.

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
Nothing is finalized for the Rams yet for training camp (except Cal Lu as the location), but Sean McVay says they are targeting July 28th for vets and as early as July 23 for rookies.

from –The best tight end in the NFL: Who comes after Travis Kelce and George Kittle?

    TIER 3: SCHEME-DEPENDENT ZONE-BEATERS
    Tyler Higbee, Los Angeles Rams

Last season, Tyler Higbee became an integral part of a Los Angeles Rams offense that seemed to have forgotten their tight ends. From 2017-18, Higbee appeared in all 32 games and was targeted only 71 times. He collected just 49 receptions for just 587 yards at an average of just 1.20 yards per route run, 24th among 72 qualifying tight ends.

Last season, Higbee saw his role increase in the Rams offense, and he went on to haul in 69 of his 86 targets for 734 yards across his 16 games. He ended the season with an average of 2.60 yards per route run that ranked third among tight ends who saw at least 25 targets.

This spike in production can be attributed to the Rams expanding their offense to include tight ends as a more prominent feature in their passing game. Higbee’s production has mostly come against zone coverage, where last season he earned a 92.0 passing grade, the second-best figure among qualifiers. He also ranked among the top five players at his position in yards per route run (3.53, second) and explosive plays of 15-plus yards (13, second) when facing zone coverages.

His spacial awareness and feel for zone coverage are evidenced by his 68% separation rate versus zone coverage over the last three seasons, but it’s also more than worth noting that his 57.1% separation rate against man coverage is a mightily impressive figure, too. Looking forward to 2020, I expect Higbee’s production to soar in what will be his fifth season in the NFL.

The two things ppl miss the most when it comes to players vs owners $$ issues. 1) ppl often discredit the work athletes have put it to achieve success ($$) and 2) players have leverage to negotiate. And if you’re in a position at your job to have leverage, you’d do the same.

The idea that athletes should just accept a deal, whether personally or as a collective, just because they make millions is so counter to everything you believe in your life.

And no athlete is asking for you to feel sorry for them. If the owners are going to use the media to push their narrative, the players will do the same

from We ranked NFL teams’ continuity from 1-32: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29226084/we-ranked-nfl-teams-continuity-1-32-bills-chiefs-lead-way#LAR

The coronavirus pandemic forced NFL teams to shut down this spring and summer, creating an offseason devoid of in-person organized team activities and minicamps.

This could be especially problematic for teams that made a lot of moves this offseason, or advantageous for clubs that maintained continuity from 2019 to 2020.

    24. Los Angeles Rams: 70.5% snaps returning

    Offensive snaps returning: 87.4% (5th)
    Defensive snaps returning: 53.8% (31st)
Starters returning: 19 (9 offense, 8 defense, 2 special teams)

    Non-coordinator assistants returning: 14 of 17
    Coordinators returning: 0 of 3
Starting QB: Jared Goff, 5th year
Head coach: Sean McVay, 4th year (33-15)

What it means: The Rams are undergoing their most significant changes since McVay’s arrival in 2017 and will face another uphill battle in a strong NFC West. Goff and the offense must find an identity without running back Todd Gurley, Brandon Staley must prove himself as an upgrade from legendary defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and a replacement must be found for dependable kicker Greg Zuerlein. — Lindsey Thiry

from NFL management rankings: How do all 32 head coaches stack up?: https://www.thescore.com/nfl/news/1976169

    10. Sean McVay – Rams

When a 9-7 season feels like a losing campaign, you’ve set a high bar. The Rams’ offense didn’t click for most of last year, and McVay will need to wave his magic wand again in 2020 to fix what was broken. There’s no doubt he’s one the most brilliant offensive minds in the NFL and a capable head coach. McVay is 33-15 during the regular season with two playoff appearances and one Super Bowl berth since the Rams hired him following a 4-12 campaign in 2016.

Some not often talked about Rams milestones. Most of these are unverified hunches.

    Verified

    (1) If you look at the unofficial list of all time sack leaders, which includes all players with 100 or more sacks, 7 of them were Rams at one point or another, including 3 of the top 5 (The list is here: https://mobile.twitter.com/ArifHasanNFL/status/700480918796906496/photo/1 ).

    They are:

    – Jones, 3rd (173.5)
    – Greene, 4th (160)
    – JY, 5th (150.5)
    – Leslie O’Neal, 19th (132.5)
    – Bacon, 21st (130)
    – Carter, 43rd (104.5)
    – Dryer, 46th (103)

I just bet no one else has 7 total but I didn’t check. I KNOW no one else has 3 in the top 5. In fact the Rams are the only team with 3 in the top 10. 2 other teams have 2 in the top 10: Vikes (Doleman, Page) and Giants (Taylor, Strahan). If you make it top 12, Vikes have 3 (add Randle to Doleman and Page)

    Hunches

    (2) Most UDFAs starting on a superbowl winning team with 9. 3 are on special teams. I mean someone who enters the league as a UDFA whether that was originally with the Rams or not. They are: Jenkins, Fletcher, Jones, Farr, Gruttadauria, Warner, Wilkins, Tuten (the forgotten punter), and Horne (tied for 1st in TDs as KR that year).

    (3) Related to that, I bet it’s hard to find another team that acquired 3 top qbs within 3 years (including a hall of famer) and did not draft any of them: Warner (98), Green (99), and Bulger (2000). Interesting to remember that in an era when the Rams had to trade up to pick 1 to get a qb.

    (4) I didn’t check to see how unique this is or if it’s an official record, BUT, there is at least one Ram lineman in the pro bowl every single season from 1967 until 1990. In fact the Rams 68 line had 4 pro bowlers, as did the 78 line and the 85 line. That’s 12 different pro-bowl lineman across 24 consecutive years.

Between the returning talent and addition of A’Shawn Robinson, I’m eager to see what this group will accomplish this season.

How will A’Shawn Robinson impact the defense? The most immediate answer is likely in the run game because of his 6-foot-4, 330-pound frame. Overall, though, it will be fascinating to see the difference he makes, and how the attention he draws opens things up for the rest of the Rams’ defensive line.

    from https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2020/06/15/nfl-rams-michael-brockers-aaron-donald/

“It’s a little weird,” Brockers said of playing alongside Donald, via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. “It’s a little bit of love and hate. You love him because you know he’s going to make the play, but he’s going to make a lot of the plays.

“At the same time, it’s great to watch greatness. It has something to do with motivation. Seeing him makes me strive to do better. That’s why I like playing with him.”

If Higbee produces at even half the rate he did over those final 5 games of 2019- but does so across the entire 2020 season- he’d have 69 catches for 835 yards which would be top-6 TE production. Since he averaged 8.6 catches and 104.4 yards per game over that great 5-game stretch late in the season, I calculated those numbers at half that rate x 16 games.
