Rams informed CB Nickell Robey-Coleman they will not exercise option for upcoming season, person with knowledge said. Robey-Coleman, who would have carried a $4.5-million cap number, becomes UFA. Weddle, Brockers, Littleton and Robey-Coleman gone from 2019 defense.Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
Rams are reallllly desperate for money, if you hadn’t already gotten that senseRich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
— Rams need cap space and aren’t likely to sit on it. I know everyone is eager to know when it will be spent.
— Cornerback is a deep position at the moment.
—Coordinator change means scheme adjustments, which can impact personnel.David Long is a player to watch in all this. He might get his shot.

The departures of Brockers and Littleton go beyond their performance on the field. Both were highly respected by teammates. Younger players repeatedly pointed to their leadership and example.Brockers, Littleton and Weddle also were consummate pros with media. Always available, even when it was not comfortable, and provided honest and often blunt insight.

The Rams lost two key contributors from coach McVays first super bowl run. I want to thank Cory Littleton & Nickell Robey Coleman! These men exceeded their expectations! Two undrafted players who have reached a level among the best at their respected positions! Best of luck! pic.twitter.com/Tit7EnaUji

They realize the situation they’re in. Top-heavy cap, need to sign Ramsey, can’t keep adding pricey FAs.Need to draft well and get contributions from their young guys
Rich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
Even if you have $50 million in cap room, it’s not smart to throw it around just because you can. The player has to fit AND provide the proper value. These are the tough decisions, and yes, the Rams’ margin for error is tighter because they have less cap space than most.these things don’t happen in a vacuum. Teams make choices based on value. They’ve let Trumaine Johnson, Jenkins, Joyner, Watkins, Suh, etc., walk. How many of those do you rue now? (Yes, there’s Saffold.) Point being, every player has a value attached to him.

https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-free-agency-live-deal-grader%5DPFF Free Agency Deal GraderFalcons sign EDGE Dante Fowler Jr. to a three-year, $48 million deal
Fowler has shown improvement over the last several seasons, but that’s about where the positives for this deal end. Even with that improvement, Fowler ended the 2019 season as just the 35th highest-graded edge defender in the NFL. Similar to some of the other free agents in this class, he took advantage of cleanup/unblocked opportunities last season with over 50% of his total pressures coming in those two areas. He may be on an upward trajectory, but it’s still tough to justify a deal that comes in at $16 million dollars per year on average. The upward trend needs to continue in a big way in Atlanta to do that.
Rams sign EDGE Leonard Floyd to a one-year, $10 million deal
Floyd has been part of strong Chicago Bears defenses over the past several years, but he wasn’t one of the drivers in their success. He is a solid starting option that provides good play against the run (run-defense grades above 70.0 in each of the past three seasons), but he doesn’t add much in the way of pass rush. For his career, Floyd has a pressure rate of only 10.9%. That figure was just 8.6% in 2018 and 9.5% in 2019, some of the worst marks in the league for a player that was on the field for as many snaps as Floyd was. The Rams needed to find a way to replace the pass-rushing production that they are losing from Dante Fowler’s departure, but Floyd isn’t a guy who is going to get consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks

I’m not exactly sure what people thought the Rams were going to accomplish this week. We’ve spent weeks talking about limited cap room. They re-signed Whitworth and signed a Fowler replacement. To me, that essentially was the most-likely scenario.Actually, I should be honest/transparent and say I thought the most-likely scenario was them signing Whitworth and a Littleton replacement, but nonetheless.
as things stand now, the Rams are going to have to structure a contract or make another move (trade/cut) just to fit in these two salaries they have added.

I think it’s different on each side of the ball. On defense, they’re embracing change because of the 2019 inconsistency, and the new coordinator maybe emphasizes some different stuff. With Gurley, it’s very specific to him. It just didn’t make sense anymore.March 20, 2020 at 5:28 pm #112714znModeratorLooking forward to more of these by our man @jalenramsey this upcoming season 😤🏈#LARams pic.twitter.com/xJhVlBpSHX

they tried to half-measure it last year and it just didn’t work. I understand the public side of it. You can’t say, “We have a diminished Todd Gurley,” because you’ve got 13 opponents listening. So everyone came up with their own theory.March 20, 2020 at 10:05 pm #112728wvParticipantRich Hammond@Rich_Hammond

Um…I dunno. I find it hard to believe the other teams were so dum they didnt know aboout Todd Gurley’s arthritic knee.
I also will never quite wrap my head around the fact that the media were full of talking heads who constantly wondered why McVay wasnt playing Gurley more.
Does the media have some sort of deal with the NFL NOT to talk about injuries or to downplay injuries?w
vMarch 21, 2020 at 7:11 pm #112763znModeratorDoes the media have some sort of deal with the NFL NOT to talk about injuries or to downplay injuries?
All IMO
I suspect the real reason the Rams said nothin is cause TG wanted it that way. He is clearly sensitive about it. He actually blocked reporters on twitter who discussed it. (Though actually the Rams never denied he had an arthritic knee. They just would not answer it when asked directly.)
In terms of the media people who said nothing, well, most of them can’t follow all 32 teams with the same depth we give the Rams. So with the Rams blanking things a lot of media guys just weren’t clued in. They saw only the superficial confusion over his usage and had no deeper sense of the issue.
