from 2019 NFL All-Pro teams, eye test vs. Next Gen Stats: Defense
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001093805/article/2019-nfl-allpro-teams-eye-test-vs-next-gen-stats-defense?campaign=Twitter_atnChris Wesseling
Like Bill Belichick in the Coach of the Year race or Michael Jordan in the NBA’s MVP polls of the 1990s, voters seem to be reaching a level of been-there, done-that exhaustion with Donald in the Defensive Player of the Year derby. Despite facing more double-teams than any player on the field, he led the NFL with 20 tackles for loss and is the lone interior lineman with double-digit sacks.
Nick Shook
Aaron Donald needs no explaining at this point, but here’s a number that shows just how far ahead of the pack he is: Donald led all interior defensive linemen in disruptions — the combined total of hurries, pressures or sacks (one per play) — with 80. The next nearest interior defender finished with 52. Donald’s disruption rate of 15.7 percent was also predictably the highest among interior linemen with 100-plus defensive snaps, which goes along with a group-best 69 pressures, 14 stuffs (tackles made on runs resulting in no gain or a loss) and 12.5 sacks. Business as usual for Donald.

Top TEs, says PFF
We got 2 of the top 10. And Higbee is looking like the real deal. The 2 best TEs in the NFC may be Kittle and Higbee.

don’t know how reliable pff is. but again. mcvay should have been using more 2 te sets it looks like.

The #Rams signed Robert Woods a few years ago in a move half of the fanbase disagreed with. At the beginning of the season, the team signed Tyler Higbee in another controversial move. Now, it looks like the Rams nailed both decisionsSamuel Montgomery@TrojanWarrior
I have to believe the Rams bring Littleton back…even if that means trading Ramsey. Or at least I hope that’s what happens.Vincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore

“Bum knee” Todd Gurley had 14 touchdowns and 602 more rushing yards than Malcolm Brown. Maybe just maybe “bum knee” Todd Gurley is still a top 10 back and maybe just maybe he didn’t have a great OL and wasn’t utilized enoughCameron DaSilva@camdasilva
Gurley’s 12 rushing TDs does not mean he was one of the best RBs in the NFL this season. He had 12 carries inside the 5 (9th-most) and scored 6 TDs. 11 of his 12 TDs came from inside the 10Historically, fans probably don’t realize how impressive his TD production has been. But that’s not indicative of the RB he is now/will be in the next 4 years

three team stats Rams most have to improve in 2020
1. 0 turnover ratio. Tied for 15th in the league. But this was -5 heading into the Arizona finale and more telling. They were 5th (+10) in 2018 and tied for 9th in 2017. The biggest culprit here is giveaways by the offense- 22nd in the league. Goff had 10 lost fumbles between week 11 of 2018 and week 10 of 2019 (15 games). But he did not lose any in the final 7 games- perhaps another sign of the OL’s growth?
2. 3.7 yards per rush– 27th in 2019. They were 5th in 2018 (4.8) and 7th in 2017 (4.4). Needs to improve to 4.2 minimum. They don’t have to run for 140 yards/game but running more effectively (i.e. 2nd and 6, not 2nd and 9) is critical.
3. 63.5% red zone scoring defense– 28th in 2019. Down from 15th in 2018. About 52% or better would be top 10.

Aaron Donald got 49 first-team All-Pro votes of the 50 ballots cast. The only person who didn’t vote for him is Howard Deneroff. I have no idea who Howard Deneroff is or why the Associated Press felt that he was one of the 50 people most qualified to have an All-Pro vote.Rich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
Aaron Donald got 49 of 50 votes as a first-team All-Pro. I’d be fascinated to hear the rationale of the other voter.Beto@_BMule
According to PFF Whitworth was one of the very worst OTs in the NFL first half of year. One of the very best in 2nd half.trey wingo@wingoz
Did the game pivot in 2019? 5 of the top 6 rushing offenses made the postseason, while 4 of the top 5 passing offenses did not. And fitting to their season Dallas was the only top 5 rush offense that didn’t make the playoffsJanuary 3, 2020 at 6:30 pm #110061znModeratorhttps://twitter.com/TheRamsWire/status/121322134218885529

There’s no doubt the Rams used their tight ends and backs to chip pass rushers often this season. However, most of the help went to the right side with Bobby Evans. The Rams used a lot of two-tight end sets down the stretch, which had Johnny Mundt lining up next to Whitworth, but it’s surprising how high the double-team rate was.

Double-team rate when at left tackle (x) by pass block win rate when at left tackle (y).
Top left = less double team help, higher win rate.
PBWR = how often each player sustains pass blocks for at least 2.5s.

Starting a dive into the Rams’ salary-cap situation reminds me how Les Snead was mocked for re-signing Tyler Higbee four months ago. Guess those days are over.Much of the offseason hinges on whether Whitworth comes back. The problem with doing cap projections is I have absolutely no idea how much he would re-sign for. He averaged $11m on his last deal. What’s the 1-year market value for a solid 38-year-old tackle?

yeah. whit. i don’t know if he is done or not. i read the earlier tweet that he was one of the highest graded offensive tackles in the second half of the season. maybe the problem was the other 4/5 of the offensive line? i don’t know. but they gotta re-sign him i think. and then hope that edwards, evans, and the others keep developing. maybe havenstein comes back? and edwards and evans can play guard?

It’ll be fluid with much depending on the Fowler/Littleton/Ramsey commitments or lack there of. The draft is an option for an OL addition or two. We have young talent on the OL, but we’ve seen what happens if they arent ready yet. #KromerWorkingOvertimeRich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
Ha yes indeed. I feel like if they get Whitworth back, there are enough pieces to find a successful O-line. All things being equal, they’d probably want to keep Ramsey at his 2019 cap number but I don’t know if that will be possible.—
I know former Ram great and Eagle champion @JOEL9ONE will be rooting against the Seahawks this weekend. Chris Long sure made his presence felt when he played Seattle! (MNF 2013) pic.twitter.com/tFslce11WK

January 4, 2020 at 10:12 am #110073Billy_TParticipantInteresting that they mention trading Ramsey.
I’d approve of that, if they could get at least one of their Number Ones back — or an excellent (All-Pro), young O-lineman or Edge of equal status. I don’t see any team giving them the deal that the Rams gave the Jags. Despite him being special, border-line great, it was too much, IMO. Two Firsts and a Fourth?
Admittedly, that opinion is colored by who the Rams have right now, if Ramsey goes. It’s also impacted by how well Hill and Williams played, which surprised me, plus Long’s potential. I’d likely say you have to hold on to him, if those three weren’t who they are, etc.
But I’m betting they don’t trade him. The next biggest decision is likely Littleton or Fowler. I wish they could keep both, but unless I’m wrong about the Cap, they can’t.

Prior to Warner or Faulk or Bruce or Pace of Hakim or Vermeil, or Martz… Isaac Bruce would have broken the NFL record for the most yards receiving in a single season if it was not for Jerry Rice beating him out that very same season in 1995. The difference? Rice had HOF QB Steve Young throwing to him. Bruce had Chris Miller and Mark Rypein as his QBs. Thats all you need to know about Ike Bruce. He followed that season up with another 1,300+ yard season on a 4-12 football team
No exaggerating necessary

Deandre Hopkins Interview with Irvin….Hopkins is one of the premier WR in the league and when Irvin asked him who were the toughest DBs in the league that he’s gone up against…. #1 was Jalen Ramsey…yes. One on one, on an island he said Ramsey was one of the best… High praise from one of the best in the league! some of the others were S. Gilmore and PP… Did’nt give any respect to DBs in a zone scheme.

well. not necessarily. it could also be argued that he was the only option and thus had more opportunities than rice would have gotten. bruce was targeted 199 times to rice’s 176. bruce caught 119 of those targets for a 59.8% catch percentage. rice caught 122 of his targets for a 69.3% catch percentage.
conversely, it could be argued that rice had less attention focused on him being in an offense with more options. so who really knows?
i just know that bruce is an all timer in my eyes. don’t need to compare him to other players to see that. and he deserves to be in the hall of fame.
