Rusty but they made some plays, good win on the road across the country while not yet hitting on all gears.

They made some good plays, but it wasn’t their best game. Good win though.

Yes indeed zn… good road win on the east coast…

Other than Special teams gaffes team looked good

Jo Jo Natson’s punt return inside the 5 was stupid

And blocked punt and missed kicked (thanks Marcus Peters for the dumb penalty on the pick..

    The Saints are marching in…

    I love the Rams.

    * Gave up too many big plays to McCaffery
    * Upset about the miss field goal.
    * Wished Gurley would have gotten one more rush, instead of taking a knee to get 100 yards. Gurley finished with 97 yards.

I’m starting to wonder if we need to start thinking about drafting a new PK for the future. Legatron just feels like he is not the same guy he used to be.

Defense fell apart after Weddle left. It was still good, but with Weddle it looked special.

Pre-season form, they are lucky to have won. Goff looked bad…. locking on to receivers. My friends are gonna crush me for this.

A win on the road against a pretty good team (playoff potential) after zero live snaps in the preseason…

Not worthy of the cover photo of a national magazine…but I will take it without complaint.

Beat the Saints next week, and I will start to take this team seriously.

Any win against a team when they travel three times zones to the east is something to be appreciated

i’m not too worried at this point.

but i’m not terribly impressed either.

i’ll take a win though any day!

liked what i saw of fowler. he should enjoy playing next to donald.

    saw rapp make plays.

loved how they used gurley. brown is a talented player. use him.

I’ve watched it on replay up to the blocked punt.

My first impression is that McVay outcoached Rivera, just a bit. McVay’s team just looked like it had a better overall plan. The quick counts, the rhythms, the flow. Just looked like McVay had a better plan.

My second thot iz — I never complain after a road win. Against any team.

My third thot is, I thot the OLine played purty well, considering the Panthers Dline is purty good. I’ve seen a lot worse performances against that D. But part of that is McVay. He called a LOT of quick short passes, and some quick screens, and outside runs, etc. McVay made it a point to make it easy on the OLine. Good coaching.

My forth thot is, what did the Panthers do to nullify Aaron Donald? Just curious.
Maybe they just have a good interior Oline? Is Donald hurt?

My fifth thot is, the Rams offense looks different this year. More Kupp, Less Gurley. I dunno. It worked today, but I dunno. With Gurley not being Gurley anymore, and Kupp getting hit hard a lot, I dunno if this formula will be effective down the stretch.

My sixth thot is, I really really cant stand, Jon Gruden, Antonio Brown, or the Patriots.

It was 95 degrees in direct sun beating down on us. Had to be brutal for the guys traveling 3 time zones.

We got the win because the Cam was worse than Goff. Goff just played smarter, but he didn’t look decisive. Even in pregame warmups, he was uncharacteristicly inaccurate. My son said Goff is missing guys badly. It carried over into the game especially early.

CMc is amazing to watch close up. What an athlete. He looked better than Gurley. Gurley is not the same guy I saw in NY in 2017. Not yet.

I’ve seen enough of Reynolds. He’s one of those guys with size and ability but I’ll never trust. He’s gone next year, bet on it.

I think we caught a break playing Cam week one. Our DBs especially Talib, were rusty. Tackling was not sharp.

From the field it looked like Goff had enough time but wasn’t decisive. Just looked a beat slow. But they weren’t giving us the deep ball at all.

Noteboom has the best feet of any of our OL. Noticeably quicker and ligher than Whitworth, and even more so than Hav. Watching them in pregame warmups, Noteboom really stood out. Allen looks like a fire hydrant. He got bull rushed a bit.

Bottom line, we won a game that very good teams win on the road in less than ideal conditions

I just watched the Mccaffrey TD run. Maybe the best play of the game. Such a tough runner. Old School football. I really enjoyed watching that play. ….wait a second.

i thought gurley was pretty good.

had some ball handling issues, but i attribute that to rust and maybe trying to do too much.

but when he got in a groove, he looked like todd. and that was against a tough defense on the road. he looked fresh. looked strong. and still has some speed. he’s just gotta stay healthy.

Like everyone else I think they were rusty. It’s a highly choerographed team sport and your timing with the 10 other guys has to be refined in the heat of battle. It can’t be simulated.

But it also doesn’t matter. Being a bit out of sync at first in game 1 is an okay price to pay. It’s balanced against keeping starters healthy in the pre-season. We can call that the Trent Green rule. You save yourself from the possibility of injuring starters in meaningless pre-season games. That is a big enough reward to balance out the small risk of playing an opening games a little rusty and out of sync.

Though Goff was just off. The INT was kinda dumb. What I liked about his game though is that being off did not prevent him or them from making enough plays to stay in it. He also had some “apex Goff” throws, with that kind of uncanny anticipation and accuracy we all know about. So in the middle of being “off” he still reached into the bag and pulled out some excellent plays. It didn’t throw him, he just hung in there and on a few plays just threw beautifes.

Rams opened in shot gun and 4 WRs. They came in guns blazing trying to get after what McVay thought was a favorable matchup against the Panthers secondary. Problem was Goff was off. I originally thought it was nerves but he actually just wasn’t sharp all game. They ran very little jet or play action in the first half.

However in the second half they opened with back to back play action passes that got them 2 big chunk first downs to Cooks. Basically the play action and deep dgig to Cooks back to back. From there the run game got going and it never looked back. The Rams as you know don’t run a ton of different run plays but today they ran several pitches and draws in addition to the signature outside zone plays. When Goff has play action he does better than when there isn’t.

They did not run much at all in the first half but certainly Brown was more effective of the two. Gurley has a knee issue and IMO it showed today too but the second half he had a ton more room and broke off some huge chunk runs as a result

one thing about mccaffrey. the guys is on pace for 464 touches.

i know it’s only one game, but this guy is 205 pounds. a very pped up 205 pounds.

that guy won’t last the season like that. give todd those touches and he woulda produced similarly. and then he’d break down. any rb would break down.

About what I expected from a.first game on the road against one of the better defenses with zero starters playing at all in the preseason. If you look at the injury list after today’s games it’s hard to argue with that strategy. Gurley got stronger later in the game and that’s an effective strategy as well. The D made plays when it has to but come on stop the freaking run and cover the TE! At home with no hurricane humidity and the N.O. Babies on a short week I expect a laser focused game from these Rams next Sunday

    SOME FOLLOW-UP

Carolinians are so nice. Being from NY it felt wonderfully strange to interact with the fans at the stadium. Nicest crowd I’ve ever been around at any pro sports venue anywhere. Also interesting that they didn’t have much confidence in their team. Guys sitting around me don’t have much faith in Cam.

The Rams had rust. Or whatever you want to call not being sharp. Panthers had it too. It’s the new week one in the NFL. Gurley was not as sharp as CMC, but he was better than the end of last season Gurley for sure. No PS, limited TC, it’s what I expected. There’s a reason he’s not a captain this year, not enough time on the practice field.

I watched the Goff pick on game pass after the game. It’s not the same as seeing it live. You don’t get the same appreciation for game speed from a video monitor. That was more a great break on the ball by the DB than a bad play by Goff.

Fowler is so fast, especially for his size. Rams will need to pay him. They better have money for him and Littleton.

And oh, yeah, let Reynolds walk next year. Heck, I’d give his snaps to Thomas next week. I’m watching the guy on the field and on the sidelines, before and during the game. I just want to shake him and say, wake up! Is it a concentration thing? Dunno, but I don’t think he gets it. Mentally. He often looks like he’s gonna cough up the ball. Then he gets his big opportunity to step up in his prove it year, and has a concentration drop and a near fumble, which it probably was.

On the other hand, I’m watching Noteboom in pregame. This guy gets it. He’s all business. Every movement seems to have purpose. I’m telling you, we stole this guy. He’s got the best feet on the OL.

Next week will tell us a lot more. Not sure if we have a good team or a legitimate SB contender just yet.

First official report of the year! welcome back to Ram football everyone.

For the record I did enjoy watching the developmental league during the PS.

This was a tag ugly and rusty but also gave me a real sense of hope and a great feel for the new approach McVay is taking.

    The Great

    1) First starts for Allen and Noteboom and they were excellent. Kromer is a genius.

    2) Littleton. Lock that guy up. The evolution he has undergone since his signing as an undrafted player is unreal.

    3) Fowler showing what he can do.

    4) Rapp playing meaningful snaps and making meaningful tackles in his first game.

    The Good

    5) Nice to see Patrick on ST.

    6) Higbee making nice meaningful catches in some tight windows.

    7) The approach to the Gurley/Brown timeshare. Im sure fantasy folk are beyond pissed … but Malcolm takes the mid game tough yardage snaps and Gurley seems to come in early and late … seemed to work as they were obviously gassed as he was running them over late.

    8) JJ3 is just a really good football player.

    9) Clay still has explosion and quick feet, want to see him get after the QB more but I was happy with him.

    10) Cooper looked full strength.

    The Bad

    11) Goff was rustier than I’d wanted. Missed some easy throws.

    12) Wanted McVay to go for it on the 4th and 1 that GZ missed.

    13) You can’t half a$$ tackle McCaffrey and a lot of our players were not getting it done.

    14) I don’t know how much was McCaffrey’s skill, but I want a better run defense and front line with faster LB fits.

    15) No AD blow ups? I know he started slow last year but he had training camp this year … were they scheming him that well?

    16) Losing Weddle … hope he can get back sooner rather than later, I hate to not have him against Brees this week.

    17) Goff Locked in on the wrong read like 4 times.

    i liked that last post.

my impressions is that the oline played well. the run game was consistently good. and the passing game seemed to come down more to goff’s rust rather than a lack of protection. but it’s really hard for me to tell, so it’s nice to read reports like these and read what people saw.

losing weddle hurt the defense. they seemed to have more breakdowns after he left. hope he comes back soon. or maybe rapp can take on more responsibility.

i hope they can re-sign littleton and/or fowler.

1.) Uncharacteristic special teams gaffes made contest too close for comfort. Rams have benefitted from stellar teams play last two seasons. I expect Bones to get his squads up to par quickly.

2.) Make no mistake, McVay has set his sights on winning a title. Love his approach with the running attack and firmly believe come December Rams will have one of the most feared running attacks in entire league.

Todd Gurley remains the best running back in entire league but incorporating Malcolm Brown and Henderson into the running attack weekly presents opposing defenses with an enormous challenge before Jared Goff unleashes one ball through the air. I have been posting and patiently awaiting the Rams to unleash the beast that is Malcolm Brown for the last two seasons. This season Brown becomes a household name nationally. Come December fans of this organization are going to have a lot of fun watching this running attack operating on all cylinders.

3.) The offensive line passed its first test of the season. The real test lies ahead however when teams have film. My take, this line will be the best run blocking offensive line Rams have had during the Sean McVay era.

4.) How can one not be excited about the potential of this defense? They have the talent to exploit teams doubling Donald weekly and can create pressure from any spot of the field.

Thought Fowler would benefit greatly by attending Wade’s camp. He is athletically nearly as impressive as Donald, now if he improves his consistency since entering league, Rams have another pro bowler this season.

Wade has a lot of options this season to dial up the pressure weekly and what is shaping up to be a lockdown back end certainly will assist the effort weekly

5.) Was anyone else impressed with Higbee’s performance?

    6.) Cooper Kupp, enough said.

Tough test ahead next week with the Saints coming to town wanting revenge. Going to be a war and Sunday cannot come early enough
