    I suspect it’ll be along those lines. Not three more weeks, but possibly two more for a total of three. He dinged it pretty good. And there is zero need to rush him back. They have to think about the big picture

    Best bet is that Cooper takes all the time he needs. They were fortunate to land Nick Williams, who plays the same position and has value.

    Rams believe that with the combination of Sean McVay scheming a game plan and the surrounding talent at hand, they would be competitive with Mannion. But obviously, that remains to be seen.

    Rams were 35 runs, 24 pass attempts on Sunday. Part of that was due to the nature of the game – big lead, running clock – but also what the 49ers were doing defensively. I think the difference with the Packers is, if Aaron Rodgers in on his game, it’s almost inevitable they’ll score points and, as a result, the Rams might have to throw more to keep pace. Ideally, they want to be balanced. But if they run 35 times again, that’s a really good sign the game is in their favor

    The defensive line was dominant, but so were the LB’s. Good to see Samson more involved. Tough to say on Talib [coming back] although I haven’t heard anything about any setbacks or that he got off track. It’s really all about where he is the week of the Detroit game.

    Joyner’s doing what they’re asking and playing the deep part of the field. They like what he’s doing. Does that mean he comes back long term? Tough to say. Might be a candidate for a second franchise tag

    Very interested in how the Rams control Rodgers. He’s a little bit like Russell Wilson in that both extend plays with their legs. Unfortunately for Aaron, he doesn’t look 100 percent healthy with the knee and that affects his mobility. That will be a problem against the Rams. I think Goff has a really big game.

    I really like what Pete’s doing up there. I think they make a Wild Card run. I had someone from Rams tell me: The Legion of Doom started out, for the most part, as no-names. Kind of the same thing happening now.

    Yes they will play an International game next year. And I believe because they got a Super Bowl they have to play another one at some point too.

    Nobody dominates on the interior like Donald, but his performance on Sunday was something special, even for him. From 30 pass-rushing snaps, he racked up four sacks, a hit and a hurry, while dominating against the run. He finished the game with seven defensive stops and had one of the most incredible plays of the weekend, ripping the ball loose and recovering the fumble all in one motion.

    John Johnson III, Los Angeles Rams ā€“ 92.4
    Johnson had an incredible interception against the 49ers, outmuscling tight end George Kittle for the ball after tipping it. That was one of just three passes where he was the primary defender in coverage, and he allowed just one reception for nine yards on the other two.

    Cory Littleton, Los Angeles Rams ā€“ 93.5 (Special Teams)
    Littleton played just four snaps on special teams, but found a way to still make a huge impact, blocking a punt for the Rams against the 49ers. Making a big impact on special teams is becoming something of a habit for Littleton.

    Saffold wasnā€™t perfect in pass protection with a hit and a hurry allowed from 27 pass-blocking snaps on the day, but he did deliver the best run-blocking performance by a guard in the NFL this week. His 82.5 PFF run-blocking grade led the league.

    49ers Offensive Line Overwhelmed by Rams Pass Rush

    Beathard is prone to turnovers even when heā€™s not getting destroyed by the opposing pass rush, so itā€™s a recipe for disaster when a team is able to torment him as much as the Rams front seven did this game. The Rams sacked him seven times. Aaron Donald had four of those sacks, Cory Littleton had two, and Samson Ebukam had the other. Ebukam delivered a huge hit to Beathard from behind in the first quarter, deflecting the ball into the air that eventually got caught by Trevon Young.

    It looked originally like it might be ruled as an interception, but it was ruled a fumble instead. Regardless, it was a costly turnover.

    Not only did Littleton have two sacks, but he also caused a safety when he blocked a punt that rolled out the back of the end zone early in the second quarter. There were actually two blocked punts in this game, the second of which came in the fourth quarter when Mark Nzeocha blocked the Rams punt.

    By that time the game was out of reach, though, as Jared Goff had been taken out of the game and replaced by Sean Mannion.

    The Rams were basically content to run the clock out at that point, as Mannion didnā€™t attempt any passes in this appearance.

    The Littleton sack in the first quarter knocked the 49ers out of field goal range, illustrating the importance that a good pass rush can have on the final outcome of a game. Those three points didnā€™t matter in this specific game, but plays like that can often be the difference between a win and a loss.

    Donald really showed why heā€™s the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and one of the scariest defensive weapons in the NFL. Donald not only sacked Beathard four times but had an incredible strip fumble on Breida in the first quarter that he also recovered.

    Itā€™s hard to accurately assess blame on the 49ers side for Beathard being sacked this often. Sometimes Beathard held onto the ball too long, and other times the offensive line just looked overwhelmed by an elite pass rush.

    Studs and duds from Rams' 29-point win over 49ers

    After a pair of close victories the past two weeks, the Los Angeles Rams made things look easy against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. They wiped their NFC West rivals by a score of 39-10, moving their record to 7-0.

    The defense did a great job shutting down a 49ers offense that showed life last week against the Packers, while the offense did its job by scoring four touchdowns ā€“ three of which were by Todd Gurley.

    With such a resounding win, itā€™s hard to pick the best and worst performances, but thatā€™s exactly what we did. Here are our studs and duds from Week 7.

    Studs

    Aaron Donald

    The 49ers had absolutely no answer for Donald. He was unstoppable from start to finish, constantly finding himself in San Franciscoā€™s backfield. He wound up with nine tackles, four sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, as well as five tackles for loss ā€“ stuffing the stat sheet like he hadnā€™t yet this season.

    Thereā€™s a reason heā€™s the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and earned himself a $135 million contract this offseason. There may not be a more dominant player in the league than Donald, and that was on full display Sunday against the 49ers.

    Cory Littleton

    Littleton has gotten better each and every week, and while it may be premature to say, but heā€™s turning into a Pro Bowl-caliber linebacker for the Rams. He does everything well in the middle of the defense, from dropping back into coverage to coming up in run support. Heā€™s an outstanding blitzer, too, which is part of the reason he makes these blocked punts look so easy.

    He finished the game with 10 tackles, two sacks, a blocked punt and three tackles for loss. The combination of him and Mark Barron give the Rams a very formidable duo in the middle of the field, which is part of the reason their run defense has improved.

    Todd Gurley

    When heā€™s not rushing for 208 yards, heā€™s scoring touchdowns like no oneā€™s business. He checked the box of the latter on Sunday, finding the end zone three times. Gurley was pulled with just over 9 minutes left in the game, but he still finished with 86 yards from scrimmage on only 19 touches.

    It obviously wasnā€™t his most productive day from a yardage standpoint, but he was consistent in picking up chunk gains up the middle. His 14 touchdowns through seven games tied an NFL record set by Priest Holmes in 2002.

    Troy Hill and Marcus Peters

    There may not be a more inconsistent player on the Rams defense than Hill, but he was certainly a bright spot on Sunday. He had one interception, a pass defensed and four tackles, but itā€™s the stats on the other side of the equation that are most impressive.

    Hill and Peters did an outstanding job locking down San Franciscoā€™s wide receivers all game long, hardly ever allowing them any separation for C.J. Beathard to find them. In total, 49ers wideouts were targeted just 10 times, catching only four passes for 35 yards.

    Duds

    Rams TEs

    Itā€™s hard to find any weak links in a 39-10 win, but the Ramsā€™ tight ends were once again almost non-existent. Gerald Everett had one catch for minus-5 yards, but it wasnā€™t even really a reception. It came on a jet-sweep touch pass from Jared Goff, which the 49ers snuffed out and blew up for a big loss. Everett was only targeted on one other play.

    Tyler Higbee, by the same token, saw just one pass come his way, which fell incomplete. It was a pass toward the end zone, which Goff sailed a bit over the head of Higbee. It couldā€™ve gone for a touchdown, but the throw was off target.

    He went through a slump last year too.

    Games 5-7 (Seattle, Jax, ARZ) he averaged 52.4% completions, 64.3 qb rating, and 6.1 yards per attempt.

    This slump is not as bad as that one.

    I just think he hits what Vermeil calls the 12 week wall. 6 weeks of camp/preseason + 5-6 games, and, the player’s internal foolball system is fried a bit.

    He came out of it spectacularly last year. I assume he will this year too.

    That one thing aside, I agree with virtually everything you say. Plus I think these are good observations:

    The Rams have blocked 5 punts since the start of last season; no other team has blocked more than 2 punts, per @ESPNStatsInfo. Cory Littleton has 4 of those blocks – 2 last season, 2 this season.

    EDIT: this will have to be updated a bit when I get a chance.

    The GB offense is 23rd in sack percentage allowed and 29th in sacks, with 21 in 6 games. Other than that they are 4th in offensive yards, 15th in points, 4th in passing yards, 17th in rushing yards but (a Rams weakness) 7th in yards per attempt. On D they are 7th in yards, 15th in points allowed, 4th in passing yards, and 19th in rushing yards plus 22nd in yards per attempt allowed.

    They are the Rams equal in defensive sacks, with a sack percentage of 8.9% (4th in the league). It’s a unit thing, not based on a star. 11 different Packers have sacks.

    Looks to me like both teams can pass, both teams can run, both teams can get sacks, and both teams have weaknesses defending the run…though the Rams have improved on that since Seattle.

    GB has beaten Chicago and tied Minn. They beat SF 33-30.

    This is speculation obviously but I think a lot of the Rams gameplan against SF was setting up the GB game.

    Aaron Donald has 4.0 sacks today, a new single game record for him.

    L.A. has scored 177 points off turnovers since Sean McVay became the head coach, the most in the league since the start of the 2017 season. L.A. has now scored 51 points off takeaways through five seven games in 2018.

    With Gurley’s 18-yard rush, he passed WR Danny Amendola (5,523) for 14th place on the Rams all-time all-purpose yardage list. Gurley currently stands at 5,536 career yards.

    LB Cory Littleton blocked a punt from 49ers punter Bradley Pinion. Littleton has been credited with two blocked punts this season and one punt deflection. Littleton also blocked two punts in 2017.

    WR B. Cooks tallied a 20-yard reception on the Rams second drive. Marked his 11th 20-plus yard reception from Goff this season. Cooks is averaging 18.0 yards per reception.

    It looked like it was a conscious choice to keep this one less innovative.     I think there are good reasons for that–they had no fear of the SF offense plus were on the road for a third game in a row, and so just chose to play a tough simple game (relatively speaking). It worked really well because the D kept getting turnovers and sacks against an overmatched SF offense.

    I have no complaints, it’s interesting that they have different gears on offense and can if they choose go all Marty Schottenheimer.
