So … as Rams fans we know the feeling, getting the wind knocked out of us. The foul spectre of promise turning into a 7-9 season. I’m going to give a little perspective here.
Each of the last 3 losses exposed different areas, and we’re dealing with some injuries. A good team that is well coached, will use this as fuel and start cleaning up those errors. I am concerned with dynasty. McVay and Goff for the next five years.
Without taking anything away from the 9ers defense, which played an unreal game (especially the safeties) … we have Gurley and we win the game. We score on the goal line, and we don’t spot them a TD by fumbling on our own 15.
There are definitely some troubling elements to this loss, and Ill get to those. But I’m not pulling the emergency brake yet by any means.
The Good (no great)
1) Seeing Darrel get to full speed … that was promising.
2) First drive all runs was pretty freaking awesome.
3) Stiff defense given how many plays they ran on us. We never caved on defense.
4) Robey-Coleman playing really stout and tight, what a great investment.
5) Was watching Allen and how fast he gets to the second level … that’s impressive.
6) Sebastian Joseph-Day is kind of a beast. I think he’s just going to keep getting better. Gaines is getting more comfy as well, but SJD is disruptive right now.
7) Nice to have Rapp back. I really think he and JJ are going to make a great pair for a long time.
8) Troy Hill filling in okay. I expected a larger dropoff.
The Bad
9) Shanahan is a brute. He wants you in his game. Behind, and running on you all day and wearing you out with multiple sets of fresh legs. In a game like this you have to get first downs, you legit CANNOT go 3 and out against them. You basically need to script for first downs at the beginning of the drive.
10) Gotta bracket Kittle. He can beat you by himself if you let him. And he’s the heart of the offense, Garrapolo needs him to energize the rest, so you can’t let him get hot.
11) Need better 4th down plays.
12) Did he miss Everett for 6 again? I saw that, right? They need to get their timing down because he’s getting open against mismatches.
13) In a game like this, you need Cooper going early. Especially since we were missing TG.
The Ugly
14) Is it true that we didn’t convert a 3rd or fourth down all game? Did that really happen?
15) Demby at OG against them. He needs to be a backup, he’s not physically ready start against NFL linemen. Doesn’t matter if he knows the calls better if he can’t stop penetration at all.
16) Losing Boom.
17) Maybe losing JJ, that’ll hurt.
18) Losing the spark. Offense was visually defeated. I have a rule for QBs … to be a starting QB you promise 60 minutes of unjustified optimism, period. It’s never over. We were literally still in it and we looked broken. I’m not a fan of that. Can’t have that. Period.
19) Goff’s numbers. 78 yards total. and 1.9 fantasy points, lol. Wow.
20) Not being able to expose their two backup OTs. ??
21) Curious to see how they respond. This response wasn’t urgent enough .. so let’s see if they can dig a little deeper this week.

I’ll say this: If you think the Rams are “packing it in”, you’re wrong. Trading an under-performing CB who’s a free agent in a few months isn’t a “pack it in” move. znModeratorBack to the discussion of the term, “deep state.” Unless I misread Zooey, and I probably have, it doesn’t sound like he thinks there are enough people involved to constitute one, even if we’re just talking about per department or agency.
Same caveat with WV, but it sounds like he does think there are enough.
My own view is closer to ZN’s, and his contention of various factions. Though I would add that “desire for power” tends not to show up very often in career employees. The dynamic of power seeking is a highly selective process. As in, if someone seeks it out, and the “conspiracies” and machinations that generally go with it, they’re not likely to take the career civil servant route in the first place. Exceptions, of course, exist. Still, they’re far more likely to take shorter, more lucrative routes, which may end up with someone like a Gordon Sondland, who gave a million dollars to the Trump campaign and was handed an ambassadorship as a result. That’s a far more common practice for those who seek some form of state power.
Power both pre-selects and is selected. This is why a “deep state” is unlikely in America. In more “traditional” societies, where kin and kith and long memories are much more important, there are far better grounds for it. American society is too ephemeral, too “get yours now!”, too opposed to the long view. It’s far too “dynamic” to keep such a thing in place, beyond the built-in power that resides with wealth. This is why, I think, C. Wright Mills’ “Power Elite” idea makes much more sense for us.
Also, until we can dump capitalism for good, which is the necessary stage before we dump centralized state power, we better hope there are serious professional/career civil servants in place, who can counter venal leaders like Trump. Rather than view this as some sinister, coordinated plot . . . I think it’s one of those rare bright spots in a truly ugly time.

Well just as a thot-experiment. Do you think Hoover’s FBI was or had parts of it that could be analogous to a ‘deep state’ ? Do you think he had the power, knowledge, will, to create and nurture something akin to a ‘deep state.’ ? The ‘deep state’ aspect of course is not the same as saying the FBI was ‘monolithic’ etc.
Just curious as to what you would label the Hoover thingy.
Btw, just so you know, the Hoover analogy is more of a RIGTHWING version of ‘the deep state.’

Why does the normal and always understood idea that bureaucracies include entrenched professionals with agendas require the misleading and mystical sounding term “deep state”?Meanwhile the FBI and CIA were famously at odds for decades. Which one of them is the “deep state”? Or are they BOTH “deep states”?
I have always, since I first became politically aware, understood how factions of entrenched professionals in the FBI, CIA, military, and state dept. have influenced policy and various courses of action. I have never NOT thought that.
And yet I find the term “deep state” to be useless and pointless. I’ve already said why. So we just differ on that.
That’s a minor point. The real point I want to make is I have no issue at all with how the Trump stuff got revealed and to me, to throw doubt on it, doesn’t seem all that useful.

As he stood in front of his locker, searching for the appropriate words to describe the Rams’ current state of mind, veteran safety Eric Weddle stopped and started a few times.
The Rams had just suffered a 20-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers at the Coliseum, a setback that extended the Rams’ losing streak to three games.
“We’re not panicking,” Weddle finally offered, “but this is serious. We gotta figure it out.”
It’s no longer early in the season. And while it might not be time for full-panic mode, the Rams are clearly reeling.
A franchise that experienced seemingly endless losing streaks during its latter years in St. Louis and in its first season back in Los Angeles was immune to more than even a two-game skid under coach Sean McVay.
That all changed Sunday.
After getting worked by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home a few weeks ago, and then losing on the road to the Seattle Seahawks four days later, the Rams could not rebound against a 49ers team coached by its own wunderkind, Kyle Shanahan.
The two-time defending NFC West-champion Rams are 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the division heading into a road game against the Atlanta Falcons and then a “home” game against the Cincinnati Bengals in London.
The resurgent 49ers — rooted on by a large and boisterous contingent of fans among the crowd of 75,695 — gave up an early touchdown before shutting down the Rams and improving to 5-0.
“It turned into a home game pretty quickly,” said 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who completed 24 of 33 passes for 243 yards, with an interception. “It was a lot of red out there.”
McVay’s message to his team?
“Let’s stay together,” he said. “Let’s not this little bit of adversity we’re going through divide us.”
Players echoed that message, but this is clearly uncharted territory for the vast majority of a team that has known only division titles and a Super Bowl run under McVay.
The Rams’ 3-0 start indicated they might avoid the malaise — and mediocrity or worse — that has afflicted so many teams the season after they lost in the Super Bowl. But after three consecutive defeats, the Rams are in danger of repeating the familiar script.
“It’s a gut check,” quarterback Jared Goff said of the three-game losing streak and how the Rams need to respond. “Are you who you say you are?”
The Rams were not at full strength Sunday. Star tailback Todd Gurley, linebacker Clay Matthews and cornerback Aqib Talib sat out because of injuries suffered against the Seahawks. But the Rams struggled the previous two games when those veteran players were in the lineup.
On Sunday, the offense produced just 157 yards. Goff completed 13 of 24 passes for a career-low 78 yards. He was sacked four times and was pressured throughout by the 49ers’ front four.
The Rams did not convert any of their nine third downs, and they were zero for four on fourth down.
“It’s not one answer to it,” Goff said of the offense’s problems. “There’s not one thing that needs to pick up. It’s everyone, myself included. I just need to be better and execute better.”
In Gurley’s absence, running backs Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson played well during the first half. After Rams tackle Aaron Donald sacked Garoppolo on the first possession, the Rams got the ball and ran seven consecutive running plays, scoring on receiver Robert Woods’ touchdown run.
“There was a good enthusiasm,” McVay said. “There was a good juice and that was the way you wanted to start.”
But Henderson’s fumble on the first play of the second half led to a touchdown that enabled the 49ers to break a 7-7 tie and continue what became a string of 20 consecutive points.
“NFL games come down to little tiny plays here or there throughout the game,” offensive lineman Andrew Whitworth said. “Whereas the year before and even in ‘17, I think we found a way to execute those little moments, and get the momentum back and make a big play that got us in the game or take a lead and get control of a game.
“Right now we’re just missing those plays. When you do, it all kind of just piles on you.”
The 49ers came into the game averaging a league-best 200 yards rushing a game. The Rams limited them to 99, and the defense gave the offense opportunities when Marcus Peters intercepted a pass in the second quarter and Donald stripped the ball from Garoppolo in the fourth.
“They gave us a chance,” McVay said of the defense.
But the offense failed to capitalize. Donald said he was not worried.
“You go out there trying to find ways to feed the offense the ball, and we know they’re going to get on track eventually,” Donald said. “You can’t point fingers and get upset about it. Just got to find a way.”
Rams players expect a team turnaround. And soon.
“I’m not concerned,” said linebacker Samson Ebukam, who started in place of Matthews. “I’ve got full faith in our team, that we’re going to be able to get out of this ruckus. … We got a no-blink mentality. We’re shooting ourselves in the foot, and once we get that cleaned up, man, it’s over for everybody that we face. I promise you that.”
The Rams will not be back at the Coliseum until they play the Chicago Bears on Nov. 17.
The Rams travel to Atlanta next Sunday, and then will stay there for most of the week before continuing on to London. They are off the next week and then play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 10.
Going on the road might be the best thing for the Rams.
“You hope so,” Goff said, “You hope it’s galvanizing.”
Isolation, Woods said, might do the Rams good.
“Stay connected,” he said. “Just worry about ourselves.”[

The defensive line of the Rams was very active in both the run and pass game. Aaron Donald and Sebastian Joseph-Day were in the backfield all game. They did not have as big of an impact since the 49ers were getting the ball out of the quarterback’s hands quickly in the passing game, as well as using screens to keep the rush off balance.
The Rams’ linebackers struggled when asked to drop in zone coverage. There were a number of plays where the targeted receiver was open by a few yards and a few coverage busts by the linebackers. The pass defense as a whole did not force Garoppolo to get off his first option very often, which hurt the pass-rush of the Rams.
Jared Goff had a very poor performance in this game, and not just as a result of a good 49ers’ defense. Goff struggled to get the ball to his receivers, often one-hopping throws to them even when they were open. He almost exclusively looked short on all his throws and while he didn’t have any dangerous ones, he just missed far too many easy ones.
Malcolm Brown got off to a hot start as he opened the game with four great rushes to lead the Rams down the field for their only touchdown drive of the game. His one-hop cut into holes and then explosive bursts looked good early on, but he fell flat for the rest of the game.

the defense came to play, held the niners to just 20 points (below the league average), to just 4.4 yards per play (well below the league average), despite defending a short field on over half of their drives (niners 40 or closer), despite being out there all day because the offense couldn’t get a single thing going… the defense did more than enough, did their job in spades, the offense just failed miserably, epically, it was the super bowl all over again.
usually i’m not at all impressed with the rams defense, have been critical of it dating back to the start of last season, their herculean effort during the postseason gave me some hope heading into this season, but it’s been a big disappointment so far, altho i believe in giving credit where credit is due, they did their job today, i’ll take allowing 20 offensive points per game, every day of the week and twice on sundays, especially against a team that’s been putting up a lot of points, if they could swing that over the course of a season they would be a top 8 defense in offensive points allowed.

Five Key Plays That Cost Us The Game
1.. The off side call on the D, in which it was 3 and 8 and made the stop, but gave them life again, instead of punting, they’d drive and score.. minus 7pts
2.. The fumble by Henderson, gave them 7 pts.
3.. The 4-1 on the 1yd line and couldn’t score… minus 7pts
4.. The RAMs created a TO and couldn’t capitalize on it, Losing a battle on another 4-1,,,, giving up either minus 3/7 pts.
5.. Goff missing Everett on a TD pass… minus 7pts
The O-line looked really good the first two series except for the 4-1 at the goal line…
They seemed to be good in run blocking in Zone schemes,,, but for goal line stances in power schemes,,, They are not big enough up front in the middle to make a big push….
We need a bigger Center and Right Guard… to match big D-linemen….
Yes I can pick on other mistakes, but these five were the most concerning to me that made a big difference in the game..
