#Rams LB coach and assistant head coach Joe Barry is speaking with coach Sean McVay today about the vacant defensive coordinator job, source said. If Barry doesn’t get it, he also likely has an opportunity to become USC’s defensive coordinator.==
#LARams Todd Gurley was able to produce some very impressive numbers in 2019 – a season that was widely accepted as being one of significant load management
Last year among RBs, Gurley ranked (min 200 snaps):
– T-5th in Touchdowns
– 7th in Rush Grade
– T-9th in Avoided Tackles pic.twitter.com/UcOzJM0nF3— PFF LA Rams (@PFF_Rams) January 9, 2020

znModeratorQ: Where does Aaron Donald rank amongst the other legendary defensive lineman you have coached throughout your career?#AskWade

#Redskins DC Jack Del Rio tells RapSheet + Friends on switching to the 4-3: “You’re talking about 25% of the snaps with the rest in sub.”Robert Klemko@RobertKlemko
An NFC South coach, on Carolina’s 7-year, $60 million contract for first-time NFL head coach Matt Rhule: “Tepper just drove the price of pork up, and I know the owners are pissed. They’re gonna hurt him at the next league meetings. They might just shut him out of the room.”
znModeratorRich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
I do not, at all, fault McVay for making changes or seeking to improve his staff. I’m just curious as to whether that assessment will touch *all* areas.Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
No, the Rams should not switch to a 4-3 front under their new coordinator. You fit the scheme to the players, not the players to the schemeVincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore
FYI: #Rams C Austin Blythe underwent successful clean-up surgery on both shoulders this week. Blythe played through a nagging ankle injury throughout season & made a successful transition from G to C at the midway point to help solidify a Rams o-line that finished season strong.J.B. Long@JB_Long
2020 #LARams opponents that will have new head coaches:NYG – Judge
WAS – Rivera
DAL – McCarthy—
Cooper Kupp bounced back from a season-ending injury in 2018 & returned with a vengeance
Among WRs in 2019 (min 80 targets), Kupp ranked:
– 2nd in Touchdowns 🤑
– T-5th in Receiving % 🤲
– 7th in NFL Passer Rating when Targeted 🎯
– 8th in Drop Grade 🔥
– 11th in Total Yards 📏 pic.twitter.com/NIp3TCYtSM— PFF LA Rams (@PFF_Rams) January 8, 2020
znModeratorWhy. I don’t understand why. I don’t understand on Phillips, either.
I’m with ya.
I personally tend to doubt the “performance” narrative. Especially with Fassel. I mean, one down year from STs should not be the grounds to fire Bones. In fact Dallas hired him presumably because they want to turn their STs around and he’s a good one to do it.
Charles Robinson has some ideas about why Phillips was let go. That’s in this thread: http://theramshuddle.com/topic/wade-phillips-no-longer-with-rams/#post-110189
znModeratorOne name to watch for the ST Coordinator job is the former #Rams safety and now Ast. ST Teams coach, Matt Daniels. He’s 30 years-old and would fit the bill with the team likely looking to go with more youth on the coaching staff. pic.twitter.com/lBnefgfLch

znModeratorI think it’s obvious SF takes Minn, and Baltimore takes Tenn.
Houston loses, seems obvious too.
That’s all home teams, but I think Seattle beats GB.

Back of the envelope math but Fassel’s coverage units from 2013-2018, using what yards are worth translated to points, gave the Rams about 56 points or 7 points a season better than average. This is k/p returns and coverage of k/p
znModeratorVincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore
So much of the #Rams situation moving forward is about how they will utilize Todd Gurley/how comfortable they are with his 16-game viability/usage. You can’t ask Sean McVay to coach around a Todd Gurley-lite again.
znModeratorChris Long@JOEL9ONE
One of the best coaches I’ve had!! That’s a great hire.
znModeratorRich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
John Fassel’s departure would be consistent with what I heard yesterday, in terms of Sean McVay looking to reshape his staff in line with his needs now as a head coach, as opposed to 2017. Understandable, but very big swings.
znModeratorSeattleRams@seattlerams_nfl
“Bones” had been with the Rams since 2012 where a number of his players become Pro BowlersCory Littleton
Pharoh Cooper
GZ
Hekker 4x
Jacob McQuaide 2xFrom 2013-2017, his units finished no lower than 7th in ST DVOA.
Look for the Cowboys to get a lot better on teams in 2020.
znModeratorHall of Famer @aeneas35 Aeneas Williams made his presence felt in his first playoff game as a Ram against the Packers in the NFC divisional round. The Rams defense intercepted Brett Favre 6 times! 2 for #35 pic.twitter.com/3Bh6bS8Bjh

McVay is all about letting his assistants progress their careers but this would be a lateral move, so that could change things

For the late-arriving crowd: The lack of black head coaches in the NFL is not a league issue, it’s an ownership issue. Owners are master contortionists when coming up with reasons why we aren’t “qualified” or “ready”. 32 teams: 1 black GM, 3 black coaches.Judy Battista@judybattista
If Ron Rivera is the only minority HC hired in this cycle, that would be a total of three in the last three cycles. NFL would have just four minority HCs this season. And that is a bad trend. Owners/league office have to figure out how to make Rooney Rule really work.Robert Klemko@RobertKlemko
After Eric Bieniemy snub, Joe Judge hire, coaching agent I spoke with projects a small exodus of black assistants from NFL to college ranks. “They’re starting to feel like there’s no future for them in the NFL.”Alex Kirshner@alex_kirshner
The NFL is shutting out black coaches, who might want to move to college. But college’s track record on this is even worse.Steve Wyche@wyche89
League office has done a hell of a lot: identifying worthy coaching and GM candidates and giving that data base to each team; holding coaching clinics for further identification for teams, and much more. This is an owner issue.Bucky Brooks@BuckyBrooks
It goes beyond the head coaching candidates. Pay closer attention to the recently hired assistants. Not many AA/minority coaches have been picked up to date. We will see a few RB, WR and DB coaches trickle in but the NFL pipeline doesn’t feature many POC. Check the stats…

Only DB on the team to allow <50% completion rate despite having the highest target rate per game.
