znModeratorfrom the Jim Thomas (just prior to this:
“I don’t think he really fits what the Rams do,” said a veteran scout Monday, speaking on the condition of anonymity. . . . “Now, he’s brilliant. He is frighteningly smart. He’ll have their playbook down in two weeks. He gets rid of the ball very fast. But he has a below-average arm. I think he’s a very good NFL backup. He’s a better athlete than he gets credit for.”
.
Well. That’s interesting.
.
znModeratorI could be wrong, but Keenum
dont seem like a safe ‘game manager’ type.
Seems like a bit of a gunslinger. Is that a good match for this team?
w
vHe has very good downfield accuracy…54% on passes of 31 yards or over. That’s better than everyone else, I think. But he makes up for it by having below average accuracy in the 1-10 yard range.
BTW I can’t believe no one remembers this.
YOu know who he had his first career game against, right? He replaced Schaub during a game…and then was the starter.
Who was that against.
Hint: their team name is “the Rams.”
znModeratorOk, well then, How come he DOESNT
know Brian S’s system? Answer me that. Now Schott’s system is the 3rd is he going to learn. First WCO, like Shurmur. Then…O’Brien, who has the same system McD does. Schott makes 3.
Kind of spooky, hunh, if you think about it….
znModeratorBtw, how does Keenum know Brian Shottenheimer’s system?
He doesn’t. You misread. Probably deliberately. Just to cause trouble.

Keenum is what he is. I think we saw his ceiling last year, a spot starter that might be able to steal you a game or two. Possibly a bridge quarterback. I think anything else is a pipe-dream.
I do think it was a great move to give us a shot to not just bomb games if Hill gets hurt. But that’s all his is, a chance at competitiveness.
Hill’s a workable starter.
Keenum is behind him.
znModeratorOK, who did they let go to get him?
Jim Thomas @jthom1
Rams place Justice Cunningham (ankle) on IR; that frees up spot for Keenum.
znModeratorMy judgment will remain in reserve. I’ll give him half the season to dazzle and I do mean dazzle me based upon what we all were told he is.
Grits
What were you told he is? He’s fast, quick, strong, and though under-sized, has pretty advanced hands technique for a penetrating type DT coming out of college (and Farr himself said that, which is interesting because Farr was a quick penetrating DT type who depended on good hands technique).
And yeah he should show some of that this year.
But he’s not an everyone starter, so watch for him.

znModeratorRams claimed QB Case Keenum off waivers from the Texans.
Waived by Houston, which decided to go with Ryan Mallett and rookie Tom Savage behind Ryan Fitzpatrick, 26-year-old Keenum is a natural fit behind Shaun Hill in St. Louis with a similar skill set. Keenum is sneaky athletic and willing to throw into tight windows, though he was slow to learn the Texans’ offense last year. If 34-year-old Hill’s performance goes south, we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Keenum make starts in the Gateway City. Keenum finished 2013 with a 9:6 TD-to-INT ratio across eight starts, though he completed only 54.2 percent of his throws and fumbled six times, losing two. We’d still expect Keenum to pass Austin Davis on the depth chart within a month or so.

znModeratorRAMS ANNOUNCE PRACTICE SQUAD
[Rams email]
ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Rams have signed 10 players to their practice squad. The group includes LB Denicos Allen, WR Emory Blake, S Christian Bryant, DT Matt Conrath, S Matt Daniels, QB Garrett Gilbert, T Sean Hooey, LB Kevin Reddick, WR Justin Veltung and G Brandon Washington.
Allen spent the summer with Carolina Panthers after joining Ron Rivera’s squad as an undrafted rookie free agent this spring. Reddick spent last season and this offseason with the New Orleans Saints. The other eight members of the Rams’ practice squad were with St. Louis this offseason.

They didn’t bring back either Greg Reid or Darren Woodard. I would have thought one of them would make it to PS. The other thing is they didn’t like any of our own LB’s. They picked up two guys from other squads, and not any one of ours. I thought maybe one of either Steward or Wilson would come back. Lastly, Hooey and Washington are the O-Line developmental guys, huh. Don’t care for what I’ve seen of Hooey, but I guess Coach Bou must see something

znModeratorFisher in second tier of coach rankings
Aug 26
By Nick Wagoner | ESPN.com
http://espn.go.com/blog/st-louis-rams/post/_/id/10965/fisher-lands-in-second-tier-of-coach-rankings
EARTH CITY, Mo. — For a coach who has yet to take the St. Louis Rams to the playoffs and hasn’t won a postseason game since 2003, Jeff Fisher commands plenty of respect in the latest in-depth project from ESPN Insider Mike Sando.
Sando spoke to 30 NFL people — eight current general managers, four former GMs, four personnel directors, four executives, six coordinators and four position coaches — in an effort to put the league’s current head coaches into tiers. Each panelist was asked to grade each coach on a scale of one to five with one being the best and five the worst.
When all was said and done, Fisher came in at an average of 2.10. That put him squarely in the second tier of coaches and ranked at No. 11 overall. For what it’s worth, Fisher received six first-tier votes, 15 second-tier votes and nine third-tier votes. By way of comparison, New England’s Bill Belichick finished first with 28 first-tier votes and two second-tier votes.
As you might expect based on his votes, the positive support for Fisher came from those who see him as a master motivator and strong delegator capable of getting his teams to play hard enough to be competitive regardless of talent.
An excerpt from Sando’s piece:
A former GM lauded Fisher as an outstanding in-game manager. “You know what you’re getting with Fisher and the message stays the same,” a personnel evaluator said. “He’s got an identity for his teams. Whether it is Gregg Williams’ or his, you know they are going to be coached up and play their a–es off.”
On the other side of the coin, Fisher was downgraded by some voters for a somewhat middling record for a coach who has been around as long as Fisher. One criticism of Fisher was that he was better off strictly coaching with a general manager making all the roster decisions like he once had with Floyd Reese in Tennessee.
Another excerpt offering some criticism of Fisher.
A coordinator put it this way: “Fisher has been a head coach a long time and won games, and there has been more positive than negative, but they treat him like he has 10 Super Bowls.”
Still, for whatever reasons voters had to downgrade Fisher, they weren’t too harsh about it considering he still comfortable checked in on the second tier and at No. 11 amongst the 32 coaches. In my view, he deserves credit for elevating the Rams from awful to mediocre but the next step for him will be to take the Rams beyond that mediocrity and into prominence. If he can do that in the league’s best division without his starting quarterback, he’ll probably rise in these rankings should Sando revisit them next year.

Yeah I love how the Cleveland announcers call that a “busted play.”
Well yeah it GOT busted. By Donald.
znModeratorI don’t, he showed with the Raiders two seasons ago when he was starting that he can play good ball. He was a good QB at Ohio State in Big 10 competition as well.
This kid has talent and he can win. This is only his what, 4th season? He’s better talent wise then anything the Rams have on the roster at QB right now.
Grits
Yeah we just disagree.

That and a dollar won’t even get us a cup of coffee anymore.
znModeratorIts cool, on my part anyways. On Dog’s part? I don’t know but I enjoy it.
Grits
I know he has fun with it.
znModeratorZack, if he’s a stud then he should have been making plays from the nose as well. He should be quicker than the Center. Obviously the coaches feel he can play nose or he wouldn’t be there.
Grits
What a nose tackle does is occupy 2 blockers to free up the other DT. That means he could play well the entire game and you would never hear his name and you certainly wouldn’t notice any plays.
And Donald DID make plays from the 3-tech DT spot when he played there.
You watch. Donald will be visible this year. Even though he’s rotating and will only be on the field part time. But they’re simply not going to play him as the NT in the base defense during the season. That was only a pre-season thing.
znModeratorWe differ. If they go anywhere near Pryor, I will consider THAT to be the mistake.
Just a different opinion.
znModeratorYou didn’t see it during pre-season because much of the time he was playing nose tackle in place of Brockers, and that is not how he will be used during the season.
Donald IS a stud. It’s not just a matter of “hearing” that…he is. But he’s also not suited to be a nose tackle taking on double teams. That’s not his role.
znModeratorI know those guys read this board. 21Dog likes to “Dog” me about Fresno state being better than USC. So, a little dig here and there is all in fun.
Besides, the wussey admins at the Herd board don’t like me for my anti-Stlouis attitude over the years. That’s fine. When the Rams move back to LA next season and most of those posters have abandoned the Herd Board, then what?Grits
Then nothing. The majority of Herd posters are non-St. Louis nomads and Californians.

I know about you and 21Dog on college football…the joke I was throwing your way assumed that. It’s cool.
znModeratorExcept Dungy assumed there’s a “distraction.” Plus of course Dungy has other issues with Sam, he just isn’t being explicit.
Fisher said there was no “distraction.” I believe Fisher. He doesn’t have Dungy’s agenda and does have first-hand experience coaching the guy.

Well they would handle it if he were a star player, though.
He’s a borderline talent, though. If he were a Chris Long or an Ogletree,
they would sign him.The NFL is not ready for borderline-gay-players.
Which of course, is not fair.
w
v“Borderline” is the wrong word I think. He’s developmental. But he’s a developmental prospect at a position of top need–a situational 4/3 pass rusher. Hemming and hawing about THAT kind of player is not because he’s borderline…it’s because he’s gay. There will be far less talented or promising DEs who make practice squads.
znModeratorOverall would it be accurate to say Robinson has been the most disappointing draft pick? We knew there would be issues with his pass blocking but according to PFF his run blocking hasn’t been exactly stellar either. The talent is there and there’s no reason to panic yet – but everyone had him penciled in as the opening day starter.
It’s got to be a little disheartening when the number two pick in the draft can’t crack the starting lineup.Pace didn’t start until the 6th game in 97. For that matter, the last time Boudreau had a 1st round pick to work with, 2008 in Atlanta (Sam Baker), the guy didn’t see the field until halfway through the season.
I don’t have any issues with it one way or another. The Rams anticipated this by signing Joseph.
So me personally? I just take this in stride.
The issue with both run and pass blocking is technique. It’s all new to him. Technique is “mental” stuff. His head is swimming. Same with Austin last year, early on.

Good college quarterback. Not great. Good. College quarterback. Cut by the Browns in favor of Rex Grossman, who was subsequently cut himself. I’m not a scout. I could be wrong. But Connor Shaw does not excite me at all.
Well some other people feel the same way you guys do.
——
dhommert2
I really like Connor Shaw. He’s a freaking gamer and a hell of a competitor. He was an outstanding college QB. Very fun to watch and as tough and gritty as it gets. But that’s about where it stops.
NCAA is not the NFL. There are a ton of great college system QBs that don’t have a shot in the NFL, mostly due to arm strength or just being a college/system QB in a gimmicky/college offense. Shaw is a prime example of this.
First, Shaw has a very weak arm. NFL throws aren’t measured by how far you can throw the ball on a long arcing rainbow, everyone can do that. They want you to be able to fire the ball on a rope into a tight window 20 yards away. Shaw can’t do that. He was the weakest arm at the combine and only registered 50mph on the radar, 3mph slower than the next slowest guy. He does NOT have an NFL arm. That’s a fact.
Undersized and already injury prone. Gets nicked up a lot. He’s already had some shoulder injuries he missed time with, missed time with a couple of knee ligaments damaged and foot/ankle issues that led to surgery I think. I know he’s gritty and wants to play through everything (doesnt everyone?) but how is this not going to going to be a major issue against bigger stronger faster NFL players? Huge problem considering how aggressive he is and how willing he is to get his body completely rocked for that extra yard on 2nd and 6 in the 1st quarter. Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing that..but not from my franchise QB in the NFL.
He didn’t really play in a pro system…it was a run the ball/dink and dunk mostly with just make a quick read and throw. I remember many saying he rarely ever got past his first read would then bail and run…which would always expose his body as said above.

znModeratorWhen the Rams closed out the 2011 season and the Steve Spagnuolo/Billy Devaney era against San Francisco on New Year’s Day of 2012, they did so with six offensive starters who would never start another game in the NFL, four of those offensive linemen, and eight players who are out of the league as we start the third season of the Jeff Fisher era.

And this is so typical.
Why were so many mediocre players on the field that day.
I’ll point a gun at Randy and see if he can say it.
