znModeratorYou don’t mean that literally, do you?

Not that I would object.
znModeratorJim Thomas @jthom1 3m]
Rams signing DT Matt Conrath to their practice squad. It;s not going like anyone predicted so far.
znModeratorMichael Sam made some good plays but he’s really a one-trick pony where as Westbrooks can be an every down defensive lineman. I could see Westbrooks eventually pushing Chris Long for his job. Long’s been a steady good player for the Rams but Westbooks looks to like he has more talent and ability.
Grits
—–
agreed, Grits…and just for everyone’s reading pleasure, here are some more thoughts from off the net on this
—-
Dick84A growing number of Americans realize that most gays are like everyone else… Just trying to make their way in the world. They also realize there are still barriers out there for gays that need to be broken through, hence the celebration for Michael Sam being drafted as an openly gay man.
Most of those people also understand that the NFL is a tough game and not everyone is going to cut it.
Fisher’s genuine care for his players overall, and enthusiasm for giving Sam a shot translated well in media… People paying attention could tell it wasnt a gimmick.
Real Rams fans paying attention know Sam can play in this league… But also know Westbrooks beat him out fair & square & Sam is handling it perfectly.
There’s no “controversy” because there is no controversy.
Sam was a football player who wasnt quite good enough for the Rams… But will probably get a shot with another team. Just like any other man in his position.
And that is the beauty of this… He made history for having the courage to come out. The Rams made history by drafting him. They also preserved the integrity of the story by cutting him when he was beaten out by another player.
Sam handling it with class brings a nice close to this particular chapter.
Well done, Rams… Well done Michael Sam.
znModeratorI would hope the Rams shore up the PS quickly… including MS.
Developing that talent to keep our DL as deep as it is is important.
It could be of course that MS makes another team’s p-s….
znModeratorJim Thomas @jthom1
Rams signing OG Brandon Washington to their practice squad.
znModeratorCROMWELL21
Van Dyk agrees to join another teams PS.
Not ours.
znModeratorHey Grits.
And this is playful so take it in that spirit.
But, why not talk to the Herd board by agreeing with guys now and then? Rather than simply making it smack talk.
So, hey x on the herd board, hope you read this board, nice point on issue Y.
Having said that, and really done nothing but give you a minor-league hard time….carry on.

znModeratorAnd they were not going to offer him an injury settlement to release him. Read into that whatever you want to.
That’s obviously Cunningham.
But how does that work.
Why would releasing him injured after week 1 be different from releasing him before.
znModeratorProjecting a Rams practice squad By Nick Wagoner…………………..

The PS would be in flux, right? Cause of Bailey, cause of possible pick-ups.
I think Wagoner is right that either Bayer or J.Cunningham ends up on the PS, depending on whether they think they need more blocking or catching from their TEs.
They need linemen on the PS. Right now they are carrying 3 back-up players and one injured future back-up (Jones).
It’s a shame they can’t put either Watts or Mason on the PS. 5 backs is too many, and Reynolds is an important special teamer.
The LBs make sense and so do the CBs.
Bryant was of course destined for the PS all along.
Is Gilbert really the 3rd qb or will they add a 3rd qb to the roster and stash Gilbert for next camp?
znModeratorVikes were 31st on defense last year and have a new DC – George Edwards, though Zimmer (first time head coach) is a defensive guy and has done well in the league.
This summer, they were 10th on defense (just in the preseason of course). (Rams were 13th).
No real point. Just adding info.
znModeratorAs a player, Sam didn’t quite prove that he belonged on the 53-man roster. But as a person, Sam proved that he belonged in the locker room. More than that, Sam belonged at the center of a unique and powerful moment in sports history.
I doubt that we’ll see a seventh-round draft choice do as much for the NFL as Michael Sam has this summer. He opened doors and minds.
I think Miklasz outdid himself on that one.
znModeratorThe all-undrafted list.
Rams who are currently on the roster (which is not a sure bet right now) who were either UDFAs or waiver-wire claims or young veteran cuts (2-3 year pros) [just to be efficient, starters and key role players in bold…not that I don’t think people need to be told who’s a starter]:
Austin Davis
Benny Cunningham
Trey Watts
Chase Reynolds
Corey Harkey
Justice Cunningham
Alex Bayer
Joe Barksdale
Tim Barnes
Mike Person
Ethan Westbrooks
Ray Ray Armstrong
Darren Bates
Rodney McLeod
Marcus Roberson
Johnny Hekker
Jake McQuade17, or 32%.

znModeratorInteresting…Rams cut 4 picks but then added 4 UDFAs.
I think the “cut 4 picks” thing is a little deceptive, because, first of all, they had more picks than most, and adding extra 6th and 7th round picks does not mean you are going to add PLAYERS, especially if your team is already getting deeper. Plus 1 is a redshirt virtually assured to make the PS (Bryant). Rhaney I guess counts as making it cause he is on IR.
Ostensible cuts in bold:
1 2 STL Greg Robinson OL
1 13 STL Aaron Donald DT
2 41 STL Lamarcus Joyner DB
3 75 STL Tre Mason RB
4 110 STL Mo Alexander DB
6 188 STL E.J. Gaines CB
6 214 STL Garrett Gilbert QB
7 226 STL Mitchell Van Dyk OL
7 241 STL C.B. Bryant FS
7 249 STL Michael Sam DE
7 250 STL Demetrius Rhaney OLThe 4 2014 UDFAs are:
Trey Watts
Alex Bayer
Ethan Westbrooks

znModeratorThere are different views on Hill. There’s no way he can be Warner cause how many ever have been? It’s rare. He can however be Hostettler, McCown, Beuerlein etc.
There are some out there who say he’s better than Bradford in fact (I don’t believe that at all, but, just pointing to the range of views).
There are some who have said they’re almost ready just to pack in the season and turn to other things, because all the Rams have is Hill.
I think he played pretty well for a Detroit team that had no defense and no running game (though they had Calvin Johnson).
I agree with ER that “he has more than Clemons had on both sides of the ball”…and for a while there, with good run defense, a pass rush, and Stacy, the Clemens Rams (or Clementines as some called them) challenged Seattle at home and beat 2 playoff teams. This team is better and more mature than that one.
I think of Hill as a cagey guy who makes good, quick decisions and has enough arm and accuracy to make things happen in that crucial 11-30 yard range.
Anyway the opening game featuring 2 Replacement QBs–Cassel and Hill.
That one will depend on how much the defense has come together so far.
znModerator. Barrett Jones, I believe the Rams want to keep him, but they are hesitant to use their one time IR/return move on a backup.
Means for the first 4-5 games anyway, they are going with 8 OL.
znModeratorIt is fine if they keep Reynolds. If I had to cut 2 players, he is the second one I cut. But, just for conversation, if you could keep Reynolds or Sam, who would you keep?
Another issue, which is not the one you’re raising–both Pead and Bailey were big contributors on special teams last year, and they’re both gone (though Bailey will be back).
znModeratorWell, the Prisco article, especially just STANK of authority… as if he’d gotten inside information… because you and I both know that Pete Prisco is writer and he’s no authority on football. So for him to make bold statements like he did is either really irresponsible or he’s channeling someone else with permission.
That’s why I think Sam may not make it. I don’t hold Prisco in high regard, but I just got this feeling that before we know anything about how other teams might want him for Prisco to just say “Sam’s not good enough” as plainly as he did is about as foreboding as it gets.
The article in question. Now that I have had the chance to actually look it over, I don’t find it as objectionable as you do. While it may be true that there’s some “conventional wisdom” out there about Sam which may enable teams to let themselves off the hook for not signing him, I do think this is Prisco–down to its flaws (including the fact that if you are going to say Sam’s sack against Sherrod doesn’t really count cause of the latter’s injuries, then you also need to show Sherrod is giving up a lot of sacks to different players–otherwise you have no point.) I think this is just Prisco.

NFL Cuts Musings: Tape shows Michael Sam wasn’t good enoughrookie defensive end Michael Sam deserve to make the St. Louis Rams’ 53-man roster?
The answer is no.
Let’s put aside the social issue of him being the first openly gay player in the NFL and just focus on the football. Sam did some good things in the preseason, but he did it against backup tackles, some of the already-cut variety.
I went back and studied Sam’s preseason games and came away with this conclusion: He plays hard and has some pass-rush ability, but he needs a ton of seasoning.
One more thing: Undrafted rookie Ethan Westbrooks, who made the team, outplayed him.
Sam, who was a facing long odds as a seventh-round pick, was credited with two sacks against the Browns in Week Three, but the second one wasn’t his to be given. He did nothing on that play, and fell on the pile to get the sack. On the first one, he did beat Browns tackle Martin Wallace, who is an undrafted free agent who actually made the Browns’ 53-man roster.
On that sack, Sam looked like an NFL pass rusher, which is why I think he needs more seasoning. There is flash there, but that’s against backup linemen. I don’t think he’s explosive enough to win against good ones, although he did beat Packers tackle Derek Sherrod — a first-rounder in 2011 — for a sack, but Sherrod has been plagued by injuries in his time with Green Bay.
There’s also a play in that Browns game with 7:41 left in the third quarter that concerned me. The Browns have a first-and-goal at the 1. When I ran that play over and over again, Sam was so slow out of his stance that he was still down when the rest of the Rams line was already engaging the Browns linemen.
Those are the things that make me wonder about his explosiveness. Westbrooks, who is shorter and stouter, can turn the corner faster. He’s also quicker off the ball, which is why it made sense to keep him.
But all is not lost for Sam. I give him a lot of credit for losing weight to get faster before camp. Now he just needs to learn the tricks of the trade and work on getting off the ball quicker.
That’s why the practice squad makes sense. I would be shocked if a team claims him on waivers, which means the Rams will sign him to the practice squad where he gets to learn from good ones in Robert Quinn and Chris Long.
znModeratorHey, I rooted for Isaac Bruce with the 9ers… I got dizzy and sick doing it, but I did…
After breaking down his vids, I realized I’d root for him no matter where he ended up… well, the 9ers or Seahawks may be much… I’ll…wish him well if he ends up there… but I just got this bad feeling that Prisco and others are writing the narrative of why it’s going to be okay for Michael Sam to not be in the NFL at all… because he couldn’t make it onto the best and deepest DL in football, he doesn’t belong at all.
Talk about stacking the deck…
Well let’s hope you’re wrong about every bit of that. Including having to stare stupid arguments in their stupid faces (like the one you mention for Prisco). Though that;s wishful thinking on my part and part of me knows better.
znModeratorAdmittedly, it was hard to predict all this in 99.
That Bailey would be cut by the Saints, that Holt would wear mittens.
Still. Some of it was already visible, even back then.
znModeratorJones: 2013 4th round pick, held back by Lisfranc injury which prevented him from getting proper conditioning or weight training in 2013. Mixed reviews in 2013, though he had made himself bigger and stronger. Then back surgery. He will be available in 6 weeks. Has promise, on paper anyway, but is an unknown in terms of how he plays on the field.
===
CoachO
The only other options were to place [Jones].. on IR, ending his season, or place him on IR-designated fro return, which would prevent him from being activated for 8 weeks from the date he is added to that list. Which would be Sept 2nd.
So he is on the active 53 man roster, since he is scheduled to be cleared medically from his back surgery on or around Oct 1st. With the bye week in the middle of that time frame, even if he takes a couple weeks to get back to football shape, he should be available to play by game 5 (SF on Oct 13th).
znModeratorChamp Bailey was released by the Saints,
i see.w
vI guess that finally settles the Holt/Bailey debate.
Holt was never released by the Saints.
So, he wins.
znModeratorMike Person of Montana State ~ 6.4/300
http://www.fanaticalyankee.com/2012-scouting-reports/mike-person-scouting-reports
Draft InSider on Mike Person:
“Bio: Four-year starter awarded all-Conference honors the past two seasons.
Positive: Smart, tough college tackle who projects to guard in the NFL. Quick off the snap, stays square, and keeps his feet moving. Solid position blocker who seals defenders from the action. Effectively uses angles in pass protection. Makes quick decisions, displays the ability to adjust, and pick-up blitzes. Strong and displays the ability to anchor. Blocks with solid fundamentals.
Negative: Ineffective blocking in motion. Not a dominant run blocking lineman. Lacks great hand punch.
Analysis: Person has been productive and durable on the college level and should be a quality backup in the NFL.”
Consensus Draft’s Steve Martin on Mike Person:
“Overview: Mike is a 2006 graduate of Dawson County H.S. (Glendive, MT) where he was a three-time all-league choice and earned Class A All-State honors as a junior and senior. He was his team’s MVP as a senior, and a two-time offensive lineman of the year. Great Falls Tribune Superstate choice who was selected for Shrine and MonDak all-star games. Also participated in track (two-time state discus champion) and basketball (two-year letterman.)
Late Note: Mike weighed in bigger and ran slightly better than expected at the NFL Combine.
Strengths: Nice size, and pretty athletic. Good football genes. Just enough of everything to be looked at as a possible LOT candidate (where he has played for Montana State.) Pretty good feet. Quick in reverse, though his pass pro setup is a bit short-stepped and choppy. Nice PP stance. Nice weight distribution and body type. Handles quickness pretty well in PP, and buries smaller people in the run game. Rawboned and country strong. Good citizen, and likes the game. Looks the part on some plays, and then average on others.
Weaknesses: Lumbers when pulling and doesn’t get enough done when covering long distances. OK pulling in short areas. Doesn’t get out quickly enough on run plays. Not the best at locking on. Hasn’t been tested by top collegiate DEs on a regular basis. Average balance. May be maxed out.
znModeratorJim Fadler @jimiramsboy
I hope Michael Sam makes the #Rams practice squad and really gets after it in the weight room. He can’t play in the NFL at his…..…..current size, he needs to get to 260 at least and really work on his pass rush repertoire. He has promise but its a long way off
Defensive ends that only try and dip to the outside shoulder are unfortunately all over the NFL….you have to be able to counter.
znModeratorI got this sinking feeling that I’m about to be right about how badly the NFL sucks and I’m really going to resent it…
Yeah let’s hope not.
I think part of what Fisher in the press conference was addressing that. He seemed to be saying, yeah OUTSIDE the building, the things the press did could LOOK LIKE the “much-to-be-feared” (said zn with heavy irony) “media distraction.” But INSIDE the building, it was nothing like that.
Now watch someone in the NFC west pick him up….
.
znModeratorMan, I have to say, he handled this one perfectly.
.
znModeratorWell…shit.
Worse, I couldn’t agree less with keeping 5 TEs. Justice Cunningham??? Ol Stone hands will cost us down the road and people will rush to blame Shaun Hill when Cunningham is really a glorified OL.
And Barrett Jones on the 53??? Wth?
/shrug.
I watched the presser and Fisher clearly was pushing for Sam to make a DIFFERENT team because the way this team is shaping up, our PS likely won’t carry any DEs. Which is a damn shame.
I said that if Sam was cut, no one would pick him up. Well, he’s cut. We’ll see if I was right… 31 teams don’t have better talent than Sam and that’s a fact. Getting ready to see him not be in the NFL… at all.
Which… my brain just can totally see that and can’t imagine that at the same time. Quantum thoughts should not share a brain with one with a headache. Or maybe they cause them.
I dunno…
I don’t think they’re keeping 5 TEs. I don’t know the story yet, there’s a lot of buzz out there. So stay tuned.
I don’t know yet if they’re going to IR Jones.
znModeratorRamBill
Fisher: “We’re starting to game plan to figure out who’s going to be on the 46 and things like that.”
Fisher: “There’s going to be some movement on the roster.”
Fisher: “We’re not going to overreact. We’re going to apply patience to this situation.”
Fisher: “The quarterback position is a position we’re going to address.”
Fisher: “We made football decisions with respect to our draft choices and with respect to our undrafted free agents.”
Fisher on Michael Sam: “He’s a much better player now than he was when he got here.”
Fisher on Michael Sam: “Mike’s got the ability. Mike played well. He has the ability to play some place. It’s got to be the right place.”
Fisher on Ethan Westbrooks: “He was very, very productive in the preseason for us and played all four spots.”
Fisher on the #Rams defensive line: “It’s the strength of our football team.”
Fisher on Michael Sam: “I was pulling for Mike.”
Fisher: “I can’t say that we’re done.”
Fisher: “Some may be coming back, you may see them Sunday on practice squad.”
Chris Mortensen @mortreport
Fisher said cutting Sam was not a difficult decision. Cited roster strength; noted a 6th rounder & all four 7th rounders did not make cut
Fisher says there are no challenges if Sam gets a second opportunity somewhere else. “He just kept his head down and work.” Praised “motor.”
Fisher: “I was pulling for him. It just didn’t work out.”
Listening to Jeff Fisher, I would say Michael Sam is not guaranteed a practice squad spot because of other position needs.

I’m also following these guys on the twitter machine…
Yeah, thanks…typo. I will edit in the correction.

I wonder because wasn’t Reynolds on the roster last year? If so does he qualify for the PS? I know he was on the PS before, has he spent his allotted PS time?
