The Rams and Browns both have interest in Redskins free agent edge rusher Junior Galette, according to Chick Hernandez of CSN Washington (Twitter link). While Los Angeles and Cleveland are indeed eyeing Galette, neither club has made an official offer, reports John Keim of ESPN.com (Twitter link).
Galette, of course, was once a double-digit sack force with the Saints from 2013-14, but injuries and off-field issues have turned him into more a rotational player. After suffering torn Achilles tendons in both 2015 and 2016, Galette finally got in a full season with the Redskins in 2017, and played extremely well on 37% of the club’s defensive snaps.
While he only posted three sacks, Galette managed 25 pressures and graded as the league’s No. 30 edge defender among 106 qualifiers, per Pro Football Focus. Reports last week indicated Washington was working to retain Galette, but Keim says the Redskins expect another team to make a better offer. Washington has already lost one free agent pass rusher this offseason, as Trent Murphy inked a three-year deal with Buffalo.
The Rams make sense as a Galette destination not only because they need edge rushing help (especially after trading Robert Quinn), but because Los Angeles coaches Sean McVay and Joe Barry each worked with Galette in Washington. If signed by the Rams, Galette would likely be in for a major role, as the club’s current crop of outside linebackers — Matt Longacre, Samson Ebukam, and Carlos Thompson — don’t offer a ton of experience.
The Browns, too, have connections to Galette, as front office consultant Scot McCloughan brought Galette to Washington as the Redskins’ general manager, while defensive coordinator Gregg Williams held the same title in New Orleans during the early portion of Galette’s career. Cleveland ranked 17th in adjusted sack rate a season ago, and its only free agent addition on the edge (thus far) is former Bengal Chris Smith, although the Browns did attempt to trade for Quinn.
znModeratorJust some thoughts and considerations.
As I’ve said in the past, it is very rare to find a starting LOT after round 2. In fact I looked. In the period from 2006-2015 (a decade and far enough back to judge) there were 122 OTs taken and out of those, 6 became continuing starters at LOT—which is 4.9% (I said 5% in the previous post).
So if you want a left OT (and there are good reasons to want one) you need to select him in rounds 1 or 2, though 1 is better.
This is obviously predicated on the idea that there would be someone there worthy of the pick.
When it comes to an edge rusher, round makes little difference. Or rather, you can find guys in rounds 3-4. Since it is very rare that a rookie rusher gets more than 8 sacks, usually you are waiting for a guy to develop before he becomes that, in which case round 3 is as good as round 1, since you have to wait either way.
As I pointed out, in 2017, out or 35 defenders who got 8 or more sacks, 1 was a rookie. In 2016, it was 1 out of 30. Neither rookie, btw, was a 1st rounder. 1 was a 4th rounder and 1 was a 3rd rounder.
On OL–the odds of finding a center, a guard, or a right OT are much better after round 2 than finding a left OT.

What will it cost to sign free agent defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh?
The race for Ndamukong Suh took a turn Friday when the six-time All-Pro defensive tackle told Yahoo Sports that the New York Jets have become a serious contender for his services.
Suh, 31, does not have any scheduled trips as of now, but he told Yahoo that Jets head coach Todd Bowles and the team have informed him on how they envision using him.
Prior to the Jets’ involvement, Suh had visited three teams – the Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee Titans and New Orleans Saints – none of whom can pay him as much as Gang Green, given New York’s robust salary-cap space. Those three other teams, however, are all coming off playoff appearances and boast elite defensive lines. The Jets, who like the Rams would ask Suh to play in the 3-4 scheme – cannot offer either.
Bowles’ defense could certainly use a player of Suh’s caliber, considering the Jets released Muhammad Wilkerson (saving $11 million in cap space) last month. He would also help alleviate pressure for Leonard Williams, a 2016 Pro Bowler whom the team selected sixth overall in 2015.
In 2015, Suh signed a six-year, $114.3 million deal with the Miami Dolphins with $59 million in guaranteed money.

DAVIE—Fair or not, a clear image has been established for Ndamukong Suh. He’s been painted as surly, aloof and unfriendly. Those traits are evident at times in his interaction with the media, but like many players, there seems to be a different side to him when the cameras are off.
“Hilarious guy,” defensive end Andre Branch said.
Wait, what?
“For sure,” Branch said. “And you might not meet it. But just take my word for it.
“He don’t want the rest of the world to know. But if he likes you enough to open up to you, then he will. I’m blessed that he does.”
There’s still no place for one-liners on the field, but Branch swears Suh is a comedian on the sideline during games. “Oh, it’s great,” Branch said, though he lives by a code that prohibits sharing any of those jokes. It’s hard to picture Suh cracking people up in meetings or on the sideline, but apparently that’s commonplace.
“I don’t look at him as the Ndamukong Suh that you see,” Branch said. “That don’t have nothing to do with me. Everyone has their own relationships with certain people. Me and Suh’s relationship is awesome. He’s hilarious.”
He did pop into a Kenny Still media availability over the weekend and declare his intent to play receiver.
Suh’s had a good impact on rookie defensive end Charles Harris, too. Although Suh plays defensive tackle, he’s got an overflow of expertise on other positions and is intent on getting Harris up to the necessary level before they line up next to each other this season.
Harris said he’s been going to Suh more than anyone else lately, and Suh has no problem being proactive in that relationship. In the Philadelphia game, Suh changed one of defensive line coach Terrell Williams’ calls at the line of scrimmage—a freedom the staff entrusts to him—and made sure to explain to Harris later why he did it.
“Coach T had made one call, and then Suh made another call on the field, so I was like, ‘Wait, T told me to run this,’ and he was like, ‘No, we’re gonna run this,’” Harris said. “It’s just small things like that. It’s little instances about the game and situational football. That’s what he’s always telling me, that I need to learn situational football.”
That’s a key lesson for Harris, who weighed Suh’s change of plans against Williams’ initial call and decided, “Look, if you don’t listen to Coach Suh—I think I’d rather face Coach T versus Coach Suh.”
Harris said he didn’t know much about Suh’s reputation before coming to the Dolphins—fellow rookie Davon Godchaux was surprised to receive a friendly call from Suh when he got drafted—but he got the impression early on that Suh was a loner. That hasn’t proven to be the case at all.
“When I first got here, guys were talking about how he’s very closed off, he does his own thing, does his own job, handles his business and goes home,” Harris said. “But this year he actually told us that he’s gonna do a better job of opening up and talking to us and teaching us and taking guys under his wing. So far, he’s done a great job.”

NFL free agency has cooled down after an exciting start at the turn of the new league year, but there still is one superstar available on the open market. Ndamukong Suh remains unsigned after being released by the Miami Dolphins on March 14. As expected, a number of teams have kicked the tires on Suh, but the defensive tackle’s free-agent decision could be coming soon. The Seattle Seahawks, New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys reportedly were three of the first teams to express interest in Suh, but each club appears to have fallen out of the race.
And now that Suh’s free-agent visits likely have concluded, the competition for signing the five-time Pro Bowl selection reportedly is down to two teams.
Adding Suh to the Los Angeles Rams would be downright frightening. The Rams already have added two defensive stars this offseason in Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib, and pairing Suh on a defensive line alongside Aaron Donald would give opposing quarterbacks nightmares.
The Tennessee Titans have been equally active of late. The team has addressed both sides of the ball in signing Malcolm Butler and Dion Lewis, and the addition of Suh would beef up an already impressive front seven. At 31 years old, Suh likely still has plenty left in the tank, so whichever team acquires the star DT will be bringing in a true defensive game-changer.

The Rams announced a one-year deal with inside linebacker Ramik Wilson.
Wilson played three seasons with the Chiefs after they made him a fourth-round pick out of Georgia in 2015. He has played 30 games in his career.
He was set to become a restricted free agent when the new league year began last week, but the Chiefs declined to place a tender on Wilson. That made him an unrestricted free agent.
Wilson, 25, has 112 tackles, an interception, three pass breakups and a forced fumble in his career.

Wilson received the most pro playing time during the 2016 season when he started 11 games. While he also started the first four games of 2017, Wilson was sidelined when Reggie Ragland took over for Kansas City at inside linebacker in early October. Wilson did, however, start the Chiefs’ last game of the season when the club rested many of its starters against the Broncos. In that game, he returned a fumble by quarterback Paxton Lynch 11 yards for a touchdown.
The inside linebacker was set to become a restricted free agent when the new league year began last week. But the Chiefs declined to place a tender on Wilson, making him an unrestricted free agent able to sign with any team.

Ndamukong Suh has repeatedly told me just how badly he wants to win. His visit w/the #Raiders should once again quell the concern that money is the only motivating factor here. With an improved defense and a healthy Derek Carr, OAK quickly becomes a pretty scary team in the AFC.
Worth noting the #Raiders have about $20M in cap space following the Cordarrelle Patterson trade, although we have to see how the Jordy Nelson and Doug Martin signings impact that number. OAK sees Ndamukong Suh as a game-changer for a defense that ranked 29th in DVOA last season.
The #Rams are not only excited about #Suh, but have also been looking forward to Sean McVay showcasing his dynamic ability to relate w/players. Few coaches – if any – have the ability to connect like him. McVay is an integral part of this process and will be at dinner as well.
FYI the #Rams have about $25M in cap space right now, which accounts for the upcoming draft, but does NOT account for the top dollar it will take to extend Aaron Donald, the DPOY. Idea is to maximize #Suh’s dominance – allowing him to create TFLs, get upfield, kill the run game.

You know? I spent years criticizing USA actions messing up the democratic process elsewhere. But I (and the many like me) didn’t screw up elections elsewhere…various “security state” style american governments did. So I (and the many like me) were both critical of AND not even a tiny bit complicit with those kinds of anti-democratic actions.
And just because a government I criticized did it does not mean I am going to happily accept anybody, from the Mayor Daley machine to republicans to Russians to British sleaze firms messing up the elections I participate in.
It is getting so I completely tune that argument out.
One of the many problems with Trump is that he is complicit with a Russian autocratic imperialist. And advanced sleazeball British manipulation firms.
I didn’t stand up for elections elsewhere to be so cavalier about elections I myself participate in.
