Ray Ray’s the type of player that needs to get shocked, to understand his lesson. Getting released might have been just what he needed to finally “get it”. He’ll probably go on to become a very productive player for the raiders.

I kinda doubt he will be a good player.
    He seems a bit cog-ish
    to me.

I keep trying to do is to establish a clear eyed look at RIGHT NOW. What is Fisher and his coaching staff doing RIGHT NOW with THIS Ram team?

And he is, IMO, quite manifestly FAILING. This pre-season and 1st 4 games have constituted FAILURE to produce competitive football. That’s just fact. You do not win more than a handful of games in a year played like this.

    Is the year over? No.

I always love your posts, my old comrad.

But our brains just work differently or somethin. My own
“clear-eyed look at right now” tells me that i cant
just reduce a complex multilayered mystery down
    to one word: Failure.

It just seems more confusing to me. I dont
have all the information I’d need to say: Failure.
AustinD looks VERY interesting to me. The Weapons look
good. The only problem i see on O is a couple of parts
of the Oline. Thats fixable and Greg Robinson may
    be one of those fixes.

I dont see this “undisciplined” team you do.
And i dont see a ‘lazy’ team.
I dont think it was a mistake to come out passing in that game.

I suspect it was a case of some young players not being
ready for a good team in a hostile environment.

But i dunno. You see “Failure” and i see
a team on the verge of finding itself. Very close.

    Time will tell. Who knows.

Really? Honestly? He hasn’t had enough time to get the season going?

I just find that a remarkable thing to say.

How much time are you willing to give him?

After all, as you said all through the offseason, it’s Year Three!

I dont know how long I’m willing to give him,
but I’m willing to give him more than one-forth of year three 🙂

It would be different if i thought they were an overmatched mess.
But i think this team has real potential and talent and is CLOSE
to coming together. The ‘way’ they are losing is actually
infuriating, frustrating AND encouraging to ‘me’.

I mean you just said in another thread, it feels like 98.
Well doesnt that mean Fisher has them ‘close’. I think they are.

    I could be wrong 🙂

But somewhere near mid-season give or take a game
or two, i am expecting to see a good team.
If it dont happen, I’ll reevaluate and
    think about it some more.

What if they whip the 49ers?
Lets see how it goes next Sunday.

Thanks for posting the quote, ZN.
I feel the entire team is on the up…and it’s just a little more time to get there.
These young Rams made mistakes…but they fought hard and nearly made history on the comeback.

I take great heart and inspiration by those young kids playin their heart out!

I havent watched the second half yet on replay
but i watched the end of the first half, and i gotta
say the run defense was dispiriting on that last
Eagle drive. The Rams had scored to get some momentum
and make it 13-7, and the the Eagles McCoy just gashed them
and gashed them. And the Eagles methodically gutted
them all the way down the field to make it 20-7.

Ugly. Very ugly defense on that key drive.

Fisher has clearly failed this year. I think he failed last year, too.

I’d love to see a new coach next year, though of course a replacement could make things worse. There are worse coaches, and I can imagine why some might want to give him 1 more chance, though ’15 would be the last one.

But he has failed this season. Pretty badly.

    I dont agree, RFL

“It’s pretty awesome,” tight end Jared Cook said. “He just carries himself with a different type of attitude that we’ve never seen before. He leads us and does it well.”

“They brought more than we had and I’ve got to get it pushed and I held on to the ball too long,” Davis said. “That’s one of those big plays that can’t happen and something I’ve got to learn from.”

“I thought they were at a little bit of a loss, didn’t know what to call and everything they did we were able to find the completion and move the ball down the field. So, I had no doubts in my mind we’d win the ball game, 35-34, to be honest with you,” Davis said. “And it just didn’t happen.”

    Deadpool – Penalties

With these #s the Rams are always going to be at a disadvantage.

Rams have 36 penalties on the year. 6th most per game

Rams have 387 penalty yards on the year. tied for worst per game

Doing the math that’s 10.75 yards per penalty and 9 of those penalties per game.

On the flip side, the Rams have benefitted from 18 penalties. Same as Seattle btw, and they still manage to win. But then again they have only commited 19.

The Rams have 144 beneficiary yards from those 18 penalties. 8 yards a penalty and 4.5 penalties a game. Seattle is at 145 ben. yards. So the Rams are identical to the Rams as far as beneficiary penalties and yards.

A breakdown of the 36 penalties:

    6 false Starts
    6 holding calls
    3 offensive pass interference
    3 Defensive pass interference
    3 roughing the passer
    2 defensive offsides
    2 facemasks
    2 horsecollars
    2 neutral zone infractions
    1 defensive holding
    1 delay of game
1 illegal block above the waist
    1 illegal contact
    1 roughing the kicker
    1 taunting
    1 unnecessary roughness

At some point either these get cleaned up or they are in for one long season. These numbers are staggering.

Alyoshamucci -Blinkscout game 4 Eagles v Rams

Half a second. It matters to be half a second slow. I don’t know if the guys were not awake, or if they had not prepared correctly. But they were a half second, half step late all day.

I turned the game off in the 4th . . so I actually am doing this report having missed 3 touchdowns.

    The Good

    1) I’m calling it. We have a #1 WR. Brian Quick not only has come along, but he came along in the exact amount of time the coaches said it would take. 3rd year, he gets it. The first TD sealed it for me. Not lost in the end zone freaking out, but setting his guy up to leave him, and chasing the ball down for his scrambling QB.

    2) Austin Davis can play QB. It’s not just the high yardage and TDs that I’m totally not used to, its the fact that after fumbling twice and the O line letting him down all day HE LED A COMEBACK THAT just . . fell . short. I love that he trusts his receivers to make plays. I don’t know if his play stops us from taking a QB in the draft, but our hand is certainly not going to be forced, and Bradford is going to get cut or traded. Maybe he comes back on the cheap, but I’m really okay at QB right now.

    3) Schottenheimer is calling a good game. Period. I like taking shots early and stretching the defense . . . without the Four HUGE turnovers we manhandle these guys.

    4) Run defense was much improved. Say what you will, we held Lesean to almost nothing, and corralled him pretty well.

    5) Gaines is showing why he was furious that he didn’t get taken till the sixth round. Got his head turned around on a deep ball. Text book coverage.

    6) Barksdale is going to need to be resigned. He and Saffold are playing the best on the line.

    7) I didn’t see any horrific calls. I actually have to put that in the “good” section.

    8) Westbrooks is getting up to speed. Looks like he’ll be Hayes’ replacement.

    The Bad

    9) TJ has GOT to turn around and find the ball. PI when there was a duck falling out of the sky ten yards behind him?

    10) Stacy’s fumble and injury both bother me, and not just because he’s in 2 of my fantasy leagues.

    11) Davin Joseph and Jake Long. I have more to say on this in another section.

    12) Joyner is playing like a rookie, not smart.

    13) Penalties still.

    The Ugly.

    14) HOW MANY FREE RUSHERS IN ONE GAME?????? Unacceptable.

    15) Scott Wells. Is that a joke?

    16) #1 special teams unit that scored multiple TDs last week, and we’re not ready for a complex rush?

    17) We are STILL snatching defeat from the Jaws of victory.

    18) 1 sack in 4 games. That’s not okay. I know we’re getting everyone’s A game because we were hyped . . no excuse for 1 in 4 games.

College QBs are pretty stable for me. Im looking at interior linemen now mainly.

I think we can say this about the defense:

1 They miss the very-solid-play of a healthy Chris Long

2 The younger players on the defense are making critical mistakes.
I think its not unreasonable to think they might improve as they
get more experience. But right now, they can be counted on
to make a few awful mistakes each game.

3 Greg Williams — I think its fair to question whether
GW has handled these players in the best way possible.
Maybe he has put too much on them, maybe they have
too much to think about. Maybe the young players will
start to ‘get it’ later in the year.
    Or maybe the league has
just figured out how to counter GW’s approach.
    Time will tell.

4 One very interesting stat is the one that showed the Rams
leading the NFL in stopping runs behind the Line. The rams
had five more of those in the Philly game compared to only
one by the Eagles D. So, something about GW’s D
    is going right, too.

5 I think Aaron Donald is doing great for a rookie DT.
Weve all read it takes DT’s three years to really
    blossom — we’ll he’s doing very weil for a green-rookie.
Looks a lot better than Brockers did in his rookie year.

    Offense

1 Its all about the OLine.
    Everything else, including QB,
looks ready to roll, to me.
Maybe Greg Robinson will help someday.
    Maybe they draft another Olineman
    high next year.

If the OLine plays well, this is a team
    that can definitely lose Close,
    high-scoring games.

Dumb penalties were the down fall of this team today.
That and a horrible special teams play with a blocked punt.

Well, i only saw the first half, but
in that half the OLine or other Blockers

Also, Cook dropped a pass in the first

“…I’m cautiosly optimistic!!! I’ve seen too many of the kid’s PS games where he kinda is too frenetic for my likes. However, he’s been very calm and playing within himself…and throwing some very good intermediate balls and playing strong in the 4th Qtr. Individual talent won’t take a team very far if they can’t find a way to mesh all of that individual talent into cohesive units. Sometimes I marvel over just how incredibly awful the Rams can look at just about any given time. How unbelievably chaotic they can look.

Well SO FAR, yeah, they have at times
been chaotic and awful. No argument.

    I hear ya.

But i just cant leave it at that.
Cause, i remember the gawdawful team
of 97 for example. Or the last Linehan team —
those teams just looked hopeless to me.
There’s just something about this team
that has me kinda optimistic. I mean
they show all these flashes — but they
just dont put it all together.
I think a ‘team’ is emerging. Fitfully.

I see a good, unestablished team making incredible strings of errors.

To me, “bad team” means lacks talent. It isn’t capable of winning, no matter what.

So to me, “bad teams” can’t turn it around. In contrast, I think this one can.

I tend to agree, but i dunno.
I tend to think, what I am seeing
is not a lack of talent. In
    fact sometimes i think they
    are quite talented. But
    they just seem…discombobulated.
    Something is just…off.

I do think they can turn it

Though, I am not sure about
the Oline. Just not sure about it.

This has a lot to do with the linebackers IMO.

Either they get caught out of position or can’t get off a block or miss tackles.

If the Rams clean that up things will change.

Well, maybe its several things. I dunno.
I suspect its partly just that GW’s scheme is
more vulnerable to big plays than Walton’s was.
    There’s some youth involved too.

I dunno. I kinda think they will get better.

In terms of just the old-fashioned QB rating it’s 17th, which is not that different. It’s 93.1.

Man with rule changes? And making the qb sack illegal? A 93.1 qb rating now ranks 17th.

More than half the league has qb ratings in the 90s or higher.

Yeah, i kinda thot the rule changes would
do that. If it holds up all year,
its the story of the year, in the NFL
i would think — 93 rating is only average now.

In a way it makes run defense all the more
important, i think. I mean, nobody
    is stopping the pass, apparently.

    Yes WV.

    I am calling you out.

You liked Davis back in 2012. You even at some points liked him more than Bradford. Now we all thought it was over in 2013, but that aside–now that he IS the starter, is it like you hoped?

GRANTED that we really don’t know going forward if he can sustain it…so, no one is setting you up for a later blowback. BUT…

…among the people I know, you were his earliest enthusiast. So I would just like to hear about that.

What i liked was one particular play back in preseason of 2012.
The kid was pressured and he spun out of the pocket, escaped,
extended a play and completed a pass. It was something
we just havent seen from Warner, a gimpy-Green, Bulger, Bradford.
He’s got a talent those players dont have. Doesnt mean
he’s better, but its a talent. I like it. Romo’s got it.

I hope some reporter asks AustinD about his
ups and downs from 2012 thru 2014. Why did he
look good, then bad, and now good again.

His total QB rating is 15th btw:

    Thot this was interesting:

Wagoner: “…There have been times when the Rams haven’t gotten to the quarterback and it’s opened passes up over the middle of the field. But to me, the Rams need to get better play from their linebackers, safeties and corners working out of the slot. They like to use safety T.J. McDonald in the box on a consistent basis, and though that’s where he’s best used, they do it so often that it leaves the other safety, Rodney McLeod, fending for himself on the back end a lot. Beyond that, it seems like middle linebacker James Laurinaitis is being asked to do too much back there, being used almost like he’s working in a Cover 2.
Either way, the Rams certainly can’t afford to be soft in the middle of the field against Zach Ertz and Darren Sproles this week.”
