InvaderRamModeratorGurley takes the angles. He inches his way out of the reach of maximum impact.
Yeah he doesn’t have fast cut jitter in his body, though he is very athletic, so he does exactly what you say there. And you can watch an entire game of his and not notice it. OTOH if you look for it it’s very visible. It also means he doesn’t lose velocity. He does this thing we’re talking about at full speed.
he’s a shifty power back. no he doesn’t cut on a dime like the smaller backs do. but he’s got above average shiftiness for a back his size.
the league is in the middle of a kind of golden age for running backs right now.
todd gurley
saquon barkley
ezekiel elliot
melvin gordon
le’veon bellthere are others as well. but those five stand out the most for me. it’ll be interesting to see how it sorts itself all out 5-6 years from now.
i thought this article was interesting. and not that gurley is a system back, but mcvay’s scheme is perfect for gurley. will that give him an advantage over other running backs? i certainly hope so!

October 20, 2018 at 1:16 pm in reply to: VB interviews Pastoors (long & pretty "must read"-ish) #92593
InvaderRamModeratorit was alright.
the big thing i gather after reading this is the front office really is a reflection of the team itself. or maybe it’s vice versa. i don’t know.
but it’s headed by young hungry and ambitious people. mcvay, snead, pastoors. hopefully, they can stick around for awhile.
InvaderRamModeratorThey got to cut TG back though. He has more carries than any NFL back, and that has to be cut down some.
they need to get back to using him more in the passing game. averages over 11 ypc in that department. just way more efficient and less taxing than carrying the ball.
InvaderRamModeratorOnly one of those guys did it by his 24th birthday.
part of it is just playing in a different era of football.
but shoot. he makes some really pretty throws. like special throws doesn’t he?
October 18, 2018 at 7:53 am in reply to: Chargers PSL Sales 'A Struggle' NFL discusses their Viability in LA #92510
InvaderRamModeratorI kind of got the idea that the Chargers were there mostly to keep the Raiders out?
yeah. i don’t know the logistics of it, but i wouldn’t be surprised to see them back in san diego.
InvaderRamModeratorwe could be right in the middle of something really special brewing for gurley. not just this season but for the next few years.
just wondering to myself how everything unfolds.
just one example is yards from scrimmage. he might be only the 13th player to get 2000 yards from scrimmage. i’m not quite sure of that. just something i read on the internet. i do know that there are 65 total seasons where that mark was achieved. he’ll join an even rarer group if he manages to get another one this season. and even rarer still because it will be back to back. and to produce that consistently over 32 games (31 in todd’s case) is nothing to scoff at.
just pretty amazing i’d say.
InvaderRamModeratoryeah.
on the road.
niners are backed against a wall.
shanny could really shred this defense.
i’m worried.
InvaderRamModeratori’m worried about gz’s peter. i hope it’s good enough for him to kick…
i’m worried about green bay coming off a bye week.
i’m worried about kupp’s knee.
i’m worried about goff’s miniature hands. they really hurt the rams last week. hopefully, they get home field advantage and don’t have to play in any cold or rainy weather.

InvaderRamModeratori hope this means gz is good to go. i’m not confident about that.
October 16, 2018 at 6:13 pm in reply to: anyone watching MNF? That's the Rams next 2 opponents #92443
InvaderRamModeratorI’m really not looking forward to seeing Aaron Rodgers coming off of a bye either.
i guess i should have read the previous post…
October 16, 2018 at 6:12 pm in reply to: anyone watching MNF? That's the Rams next 2 opponents #92442
InvaderRamModeratorniners might be tougher than i thought.
one thing that the rams gotta look out for.
green bay will be coming off a bye week when they face the rams.
not that the rams should be looking ahead of the niners. but i don’t think it’ll matter if i do. just a little.
October 15, 2018 at 6:19 pm in reply to: daring the Rams to run (VB & Salfino on the Denver game) #92401
InvaderRamModeratorThe biggest problem with the Rams pass defense is the lack of a pass rush. Sure, Donald and Suh are great at hurrying the QB, but the QB just rolls away from pressure and finds a receiver.
good post. i especially liked this part. suh and donald can pressure the qb all they want but it won’t matter if someone else isn’t there to finish it off.
i was hoping ebukam would be part of the solution. but he hasn’t really done much in the sack department.
this could be a major problem.
InvaderRamModeratora little disappointed. rams had a chance to really put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter and fell a little flat.
goff did not play well. i think the pass rush affected him. i think the weather affected him but not as much as i thought it would.
i think the secondary was not good today. hill and shields i thought played bad.
still no outside pass rush. it’s officially panic mode as far as edge rusher is concerned. it’s going to cost the rams down the road against a good team.
gurley is now the nfl’s yards from scrimmage leader as well as the rushing leader. he also has 11 total touchdowns. 9 rushing and 2 receiving.
he’s on pace for 1661 rushing yards and 659 receiving yards – 2320 yards total. he’s also on pace for 29 total touchdowns which would rank second all-time – only to tomlinson.
helluva season so far for todd.
rams need to pick it up next week for the niners. i don’t expect a letdown. but niners will be playing after a monday night game. rams need to put them away. no close game next week.
InvaderRamModeratori’m telling y’all. goff and fumbles could be a thing in this game.
InvaderRamModeratorSome people warned of a slip backwards.
yeah. i was thinking a slight regression was possible. and i’m glad there hasn’t been. he looks way better than last year. just how he’s throwing with more velocity and into tighter windows. just looks more confident out there.
he is also playing under ideal circumstances. it won’t always be that way, but i’ll certainly take it.
I wouldn’t take anyone over Goff right now.
it’s between him and mahomes for me. mahomes has small hands too though. if goff’s hands were half an inch longer there’d be no debate for me.
InvaderRamModeratorBut there’s still things we DONT know about Goff. How well can he play under playoff pressure, in the clutch, etc.
yeah.
and i’d also just add longevity. can he do it for five years? ten years? fifteen?
those are the two things left.
warner got the first part down.
he couldn’t get the second part down with the rams although obviously he came back later with another team.
i’m hoping goff can stay a ram awhile.
InvaderRamModeratordenver is the third best rushing offense in the league.
they’re playing at home. in the snow.
has goff ever played in the snow with those tiny tiny hands?
has goff even seen snow?
i’m worried.
InvaderRamModeratorThe middle of October in Denver is unlike anywhere else. You can probably say that about any month in this part of Colorado. But this time of year, in particular, can be a bit erratic. Like the snow that’s expected on Sunday to go along with an expected high of 27 degrees and lows of 21.
In other words, the Rams’ first road trip outside the West Coast should be a doozy.goff was a little off in seattle. i wonder if the rain had any effect. the weather could be a significant factor tomorrow.
InvaderRamModeratorHeresy to say Goff is WAY ahead of Brees, Brady and Manning ever were in their first 6 years, but he easily is way ahead of their 3rd years….way ahead! And, I don’t mean just stats.
the thing i can’t stop thinking about is goff has barely scratched the surface of his potential. barely.
i think he’s got another 3 years before he really starts hitting his stride – possibly more. 3 years of learning the offense. adjusting to the speed of the game. reading defenses. refining his mechanics. 3 years of defenses probing his game – trying to find weaknesses – and him adjusting to that.
hopefully, he plays a long time, and we can track his progress over a decade. possibly even 2 decades. kinda crazy to think about.
hopefully. hopefully, it goes well.
InvaderRamModeratorHi. What are you not sold on? That it was all gap stuff? Or are you not sold that they will fix the gap stuff?
i’m not sold that they will actually fix it. i believe them when they say that’s the problem. i’m skeptical that it can be fixed this season.
my guess. and it’s only a guess. is that they are abandoning gaps in order to overcome some other shortcoming. if they stay gap disciplined, who’s to say that the opposing offenses won’t shred them in the air? there’s no outside pass rush, and talib is out. my guess is they will have to concede something either way. and if they come across a more balanced team, it’s just not going to work – as in the playoffs.
i don’t think it can be fixed this season. unless ogbo is just what they need and talib comes back and peters gets healthy. just too many variables at this point.
InvaderRamModeratorThere’s Everett too.
yeah, he and ferragamo were before my time.
my fandom started with the tony banks era. chris miller technically.
InvaderRamModeratorwell why are they abandoning gap responsibilities? and why would they change now? and why didn’t they change before?
are they trying to do too much to cover for deficiencies elsewhere?
i’m not sold yet.
October 12, 2018 at 7:18 pm in reply to: ‘We need to get this shit together’: Inside the Rams defense’s players-only meet #92295
InvaderRamModeratorehhh. we’ll see. i think after 5 games you can pretty much get a sense of how good a particular unit is.
and with defense and special teams, a large part of it is injuries. so hopefully, part of it is that injured guys get back healthy.
but i also think that some of the problems on defense are just going to be problems all season long. hopefully, they aren’t so big that they significantly hurt their chances to do something special this year.
InvaderRamModeratorit’s hard to say. things are muddled with all the new rules.
but i can safely say of the rams qbs i’ve seen. he’s better than bradford.
same with banks….
i can’t say for sure, but i think he’s better than bulger. i know he hasn’t won a playoff game, but it’s only a matter of time.
trent green never had enough time with the rams to qualify.
that comes down to warner. with the rams he only had three strong years. but those were three glorious years. he hasn’t quite gotten there, and there’s no guarantee he will.
as for the nfl. too early to tell. ask again after year 5.

InvaderRamModeratorpart of it is peters just being peters. you take the good with the bad.
part of it is just him being injured.
but also i wonder if he might be trying too hard.
i listened to some analyst talking about how far the denver secondary has fallen after talib left. his leadership on the field could be a big difference as well.
InvaderRamModerator1. Marcus Peters was beat by a lot more than a strained leg on those TD passes. That was not the injury alone. He blew it. Dunno more than that, but I do know that much.
Yeah, he was gambling.
I think he was gambling even more than usual to make up for not being 100%.
if that was the case. and i think it was. then i wonder if peters should have been playing. but maybe they had no choice.

InvaderRamModeratorWhat do we make of the rams fourth quarter defense? Seems like they play pretty well in the most-important quarter. Is that a ‘thing’ or just a statistical oddity that has no meaning.
w
vi don’t know.
part of me thinks it’s hard for most offenses to keep pace with the rams’ offense. seahawks’ offense just ran out of gas.

InvaderRamModeratorI’ve only seen the hilites so far. Seems like they might be a bit more like the 2000 team as opposed to the 1999 team.
i don’t think this defense is quite as bad as that 2000 rams’ defense. but not quite as good as the 1999 version either.
somewhere in between.
one big difference between the 99 rams and this year’s edition is that there is no catching teams by surprise this year. there was a lot of hype building around this team from last year. and then with the offseason additions. no. teams were preparing for these rams.
so. i don’t i know how much of a difference that’s made.
football outsiders ranks the defense 9th through week 4. that’ll likely go down after this week. but they rank 23rd against the run. and i’m sure that’ll go down as well.
another thing that’s been disappointing is special teams has taken a huge hit this year. they rank 17th this year. this despite the blocked punts by littleton. my guess is gz being out and the return game being affected by injuries to cooper and then to natson hasn’t helped.
the 99 rams team had great special teams units. didn’t they have that coach who loved to run around training camp with something strapped to his back making loud noises?
anyway, that rams team was well rounded. this year. not so much.

InvaderRamModeratorWell, they were 5th in the league against the run coming into that game, so hopefully that was an aberration and Phillips and Co can fix it.
even now they’re still middle of the pack.
but where were they in ypc going into the game? i don’t remember it being that good but maybe all the negativity is affecting my memory.
right now they’re bottom of the league.
maybe it’s just the read option. i do remember the raiders brutalizing the run defense, but the game got out of hand and the raiders were forced to abandon the run.
regardless i think the rams need to get that ypc down.
InvaderRamModeratorThe Rams need the experience and confidence that comes with these kinds of games because the playoffs are going to be tough as always.
yes. good point.
