goff’s season seems to be very similar to brees’ 2003 season – his third season in the league (age 24).

this is goff’s fourth season – age 25.

brees really struggled that season. his rating was 67.5 that year which ranked 28th in the league.

goff this year has a rating of 82.1 which is good for 27th in the league.

just numerous factors that are out of goff’s control. the oline has been in constant flux. gurley is not himself. not even close to himself.

and when you look a little further, it’s not like brees didn’t have help. he had a peak ladainian tomlinson in the backfield (finished 3rd in the league in rushing that year). he was in his second year under schottenheimer and offensive coordinator cam cameron.

goff still can make awesome throws. we saw it last night. he had at least 2 tds taken away from him (kupp fumble and reynolds td that was called back for illegal formation). against a bears defense that is ranked 8th in the league in total yards and 4th in scoring. without his 2 starting wrs. and an offensive line starting 2 rookies (in their age 22 seasons i should add).

now some of it falls on him too. he makes some really questionable throws at times. but the thing is it never fazes him. he’s a tough guy. and much like he’s shown throughout his career, the guy overcomes adversity and becomes better from it. he’s going to continue to take his lumps this season. but i’m fairly confident he rises above it. and this will end up being a positive experience for him.

We still have a long way to go, but there was a lot of improvement shown by all.

yeah. excited about edwards and evans. and noteboom and allen even (hope they can come back healthy). but a long way to go.

yup. rudolph goes in a second time while garrett is engaged with decastro.

still inexcusable. but it was a series of events that kept escalating.

But if we look at it with cold eyes, it’s just a fact of Cause and Effect that Rudolph’s running back into the fray, squaring up directly with Garrett, when he was already contained by DeCastro and another Pittsburgh lineman . . . . Well, I see that as escalation, totally unnecessary and pretty stupid.

I agree that was pretty stupid.

you’re not the only one. guys on nfl network were saying rudolph was getting off way too lightly.

although they said no doubt that there was no excuse for what garrett did.

but I’m gonna show bad form today. Cuz, yeah, I thought they neglected the O-line before the season started.

    I don’t agree.

I think this is a case of out of an out of sync OL with new faces being rough (though winning 5 games) and then that gets taken as a talent issue.

They drafted 5 linemen in 2 years, 4 look good, and in fact one (Edwards) may be the best Rams low round pick in years and years. I think the future will vindicate the picks of Noteboom, Evans, and Edwards above all, and probably Allen too.

They then traded for one (a high 2nd rounder) and picked up another one as a cut (a viable move in line building).

That is not neglecting the OL.

Meanwhile yesterday they ended up with 4 spots on the OL manned by guys either out of position or fresh off the bench. No line looks good under those conditions.

I am in pretty strong disagreement with all the “told you so” OL posts.

That’s my 2 cents on this. Just posting it as my vote in the informal poll. We could argue about it all day but I don’t intend to. I just see it as 2 different votes.

    ….

i almost agree. except i’m waiting to see what happens with whit.

and at this point noteboom is still very much a question mark. and edwards at left tackle? perhaps. it’s a long shot. but then that leaves a hole at guard. possibly.

i only saw the second half. but some of this is on goff as well. he’s gotta adjust a little bit. and there was some questionable decision making.

also. they shoulda ran gurley more.

perhaps this is a case where mcvay should have given the starters some more time in preseason?

i don’t know. whit is getting up there in age so that’s a difficult choice to make.

so things didn’t slow down for him until 6 or 7 years in the league.

hmmm… goff is in his fourth year. that’s goes in line with my thinking. so he must be right!

seriously though. i don’t think we’ve seen peak goff yet.

yeah rams essentially pay the dolphins a draft pick to take on around 4 million dollars of salary. or the dolphins just payed 4 million for a fifth round draft pick… sure. why not?

i liked talib. it sucks he had to go out this way.

i also think this means that they like what they have in hill and the other young defensive backs so yay!

I don’t see how we can afford Fowler and Ramsey. Obo’s play might replace Fowler in the future. Hopefully we can re-sign Mathews on the cheap again

i’m no cap expert, but i don’t see how they could either.

    unless.

cooks and/or gurley are cut. both are a big possibility i think.

but then. they gotta extend kupp too.

help me understand the frustration with Rams fans over this game?????

there is a small percentage of rams fans who are freaking out. who are going so far as to say that goff should be traded.

but it’s a minority for sure. i think.

so you’re right. there’s a lot of good things about this team we need to appreciate. but at the same time there are definite things that need to be fixed.

saw highlights. gurley looked strong on the few runs i saw.

i hope mcvay starts ramping up his reps soon. don’t know what’s going on there, but they can’t justify that salary given the amount of touches he gets. and there’s only so much salary cap space to go around.

can’t wait to see the actual game and see how ogbo did.

have not seen the game yet. will try to watch it tonight or tomorrow.

curious as to what people thought of ogbo.

also. i think gurley and cooks get cut as soon as rams are able.

priority has to be to re-sign kupp. and ramsey.

i got a feeling about long. maybe we even see him second half of the season. i though i read that he’s having to learn wade’s zone schemes.

i got a feeling about evans too. and i don’t necessarily think he’s just a guard prospect like you, but even if he did end up starting at guard. well. i’ll take that.

this is a particularly young class as well.

gaines is the oldest in his age 23 season. long is the youngest in his age 21 season. the others are all in their age 22 seasons.

the rams have at least 2 starters among that group. rapp i think no question. edwards. i think 50% at this point. it could go all wrong. yeah. still too early, but it looks promising.

well i just gotta say. the news about rapp and edwards is just awesome. just totally awesome.

if the rams can develop these 2 guys into solid starters. well shoot. who needs first rounders?

i figured rapp was the starter last week. regardless of injuries for him to grab a starting spot this fast is impressive. edwards too.

I think evans is strictly a guard in the nfl

shoot. guard would be good too.

right now i’m not even considering noteboom anywhere until i see or at least read that he’s back healthy.

i’ll be placing close attention to edwards and how he develops over the season.

But I asked if he knew anything about Evans stepping up in practice. There have been rumors. He asked McVay about Evans in today’s presser. McVay said Evans is making progress and Kromer is working behind the scenes with him.

i’d like to see evans take that right tackle spot.

hav has looked shaky this season. but maybe there’s something going on there that we don’t know about.

Lets say Whitworth and Blythe are gone next year. We could have Noteboom and Havenstien as tackles, Edwards and Evans as guards, Allen or Corbett as center. Maybe we would like to have better choices, but we do have choices. imo

i believe we have choices at lg, c, rg, and rt.

but left tackle. they gotta nail that one down.

a young guy with barely any experience playing any oline spot coming off season ending knee surgery worries me a little.

it could become a big problem. we’ll see.

it’s a long shot but if edwards could take over at left tackle next year that’d be huge. i’d just be happy if he could make the left guard spot his own.

didn’t realize how young he actually was. he’s only 22, so he has a ways before he matures physically. should be interesting.

Ogbo is going to get his sacks. It’s coming soon. This a back to back rep where he puts a pressure on Matt Ryan. Look at the first round OT the Falcons traded up with the #Rams to get?!? Devonta Freeman? Nope. Okoronkwo comes close again to getting a sack. Great stuff out of 45

i’d like to see ogbo get more reps. might need him next season.

Except for missing Matthews, that would have nothing to do with the reduced playbook for the secondary and all the head games and disguises they use.

well actually i think it would. any hesitation by a qb due to confusion would put stress on the oline.

In terms of injuries…the Rams secondary is so deep they could work around missing Johnson.

i’m not quite sure i buy that. rams routinely use three safeties.

So I would never say the Rams D was hampered for various reasons and just lucked into playing an inferior offense.

well. i certainly am not arguing that.

i do argue that the oline played an inferior falcons front 7. although interestingly enough i looked at oline rankings, and they rank the rams oline 7th in run blocking and 6th in pass protection. go figure. it does take into account strength of opponent.

They have Mack at center and Matthews at LOT so I just assumed they shouldn’t be THAT bad. But…I guess they’ve been struggling and the Rams then came in and ate em up.

that may be true. i don’t know enough about the falcons oline.

but i also know that the rams defense is at less than 100% right now. both through injury and the fact that the rams were not able to use the full playbook.

so i also hope/expect this defense to get better as the season progresses.

they’re forgetting matthews too who was on track to have the best season in terms of sacks of his career. his entire freaking career. so you got matthews and fowler coming at quarterbacks from opposite sides. you got the best player in the nfl wreaking havoc from the defensive line and a lockdown corner who can handle the other team’s best receiver almost by himself. they also have possibly one of the better trio of safeties in the league.

so it will be interesting to see IF it all comes together. which it hasn’t. yet.

i can only hope that kromer and the oline keep grinding away. kromer said before the season began that the oline would be a work in progress the entire season. hopefully, the rams can sneak into the playoffs, and the rebuilt oline is firing on all cylinders by the end of the season.
