InvaderRamModeratorIt is evident that defensive strategy has changed for the secondary. Gone are the days of 2 CBs, a slot, a FS and a SS. They are mixing up what they are doing, and the offense can’t tell pre-snap necessarily what those guys are going to do.
you guys are convincing me. i feel a lot better than i did several hours ago.
i definitely think after reading this that after the running game the secondary is what i’ll be watching the most.
InvaderRamModeratorIt’s the secondary that has to do most of the multiplicity/disguised coverage action.
well that’s good to know. i like curl. i don’t think he’s talked about enough. or maybe the other teams know something the rams don’t. i choose to believe the rams outsmarted everyone else unless the actual games show differently. i like white. it’s a gamble, but a smart one i think. and williams should be fine.
i’d still feel better if the rams brought jj back. maybe with trading skow they can do something. but if not i think lake should be fine too.
and i expect jones to step up. obviously he’s a front seven guy. but he does a lot of things well, and he’s a leader.
InvaderRamModeratorfurthermore with a rookie coordinator and a young defense is it a good idea to make the defense so “multiple”? seems like “multiple” is another way of saying more complex or difficult. would it be better to simplify it? players having less experience executing that kind of defense and a coordinator with no experience calling those plays?
InvaderRamModeratorramsman34 The D front will be very situation-multiple. The more Shula can mix up the fronts, personnel, stunt/blitz looks, the more issues it creates for opposing offensive game plans and protections.
i’m curious to see how shula handles this defense. losing donald sucks for sure.
but more than that. going with a young defense. a very young first time coordinator. that could hurt as well. i don’t know. morris entered the job with a lot more experience. he’s a leader. what is shula? is that a good mix? rookie coordinator with a young defense?
InvaderRamModeratorso kupp, nacua, robinson, atwell, and whittington. with whittington taking over a lot of the st roles that skow filled i’m assuming. there’s still the 6th wr spot but shouldn’t be difficult to fill.
InvaderRamModeratorthat’s just not a good list. pff has him ranked five. that sounds more accurate.
InvaderRamModeratori’m glad to hear you’re getting better. look forward to seeing you again on this board.
InvaderRamModeratorlooks like the 11 personnel podcast might be over.
Listeners of 11 Personnel may have noticed some gradual changes over the last weeks and months. The Athletic audio team has limited bandwidth and will no longer be producing the show as they adjust their plan for team specific audio. I have loved talking with you guys directly.

InvaderRamModeratoryeah. i should have clarified. rams writer. and to clarify futher that’s in 31 years of following the rams. i can’t speak on any rams writers before that time.
zimmerman as in dr. z? i enjoyed reading him. that was like ages ago.
InvaderRamModeratorYup. Her watch in LA will be over soon. And we will never see her like again.
truly. the best i’ve read maybe ever. and i’ve enjoyed her podcast as well.
i don’t think anyone else has come even close.
InvaderRamModeratoron top of that if the rams can win a superbowl after losing a truly generational player? that would be something.
InvaderRamModeratora couple things. how different is what the rams do compared to other teams? is it that innovative or is this just a variation of what other front offices do?
also. ultimately the purpose of all this is to win superbowls. and kansas city seems to be setting that benchmark.
the rams under snead have been to two. won one. they’ve had some good drafts. made some pretty bold moves. have had sustained success since mcvay was hired. you got this season. the 25 season. and then the 26 season hopefully mcvay and snead are still here. that’ll mark ten years of the mcsnead era of rams football. hopefully stafford is still here. i wonder how we’ll look back on everything at that point.
InvaderRamModeratorcorum might be my favorite player from this draft.
can’t remember who i said last time but i definitely think corum is my favorite player from this draft class. haha!
him and williams in the backfield. jackson, avila, and dotson blowing holes open in the middle.
i think this will be the most fun watching this offense since 2018.
InvaderRamModeratori think it’s still better than anything anyone else is writing. it gets a little wordy, but it is interesting to me her going into all the details of how they collect information on all the players.
the one thing that worries me with this system is it’s so proprietary that i wonder how difficult it is to bring in fresh ideas. to have input it seems like you need to know a lot of the different colors and symbols that are involved. and unless you’ve been working with it for a long time it might be hard to just dive right in. or maybe it’s just intuitive how it works.
InvaderRamModeratorTo be honest that sounds like much of it is just 2024. They’re looking to quickly re-establish the defense so they presumably sacrifice some physical traits while looking for older players who can start now.
that’s what it looks like to me as well.
and yeah. it’s not what they would necessarily do every draft but they’re very much in a win now mode.

InvaderRamModeratorI watched about 30 seconds of the first highlight vid above — and its all i needed to see. This kid has awesome shiftiness. He can fake defenders out of their shoes. Jeezus. Like a small barry sanders. Perfect pick.
seriously. i know almost nothing about these prospects first of all. just to get that out of the way.
my initial impression from afar was that he was more of a workman type rb. but when i clicked on his highlight reel i was blown away by how shifty he was. and it’s backed up by his agility numbers.
and then running behind this revamped oline? i think the running game could be better than last year’s with both him and kyren.
InvaderRamModeratori want verse to be better than leonard floyd.
not that floyd was bad. he was good. but i want verse to be better.

InvaderRamModeratorNo not doing that either, really. I said starter or significant contributor, which is quality. Either way quality is what I am talking about–when I discuss drafts, it is always what I talk about.
slight disagreement. a hit implies starter or contributor. quality of the hit by my definition is a bit different. like nacua would have been offensive rookie of the year in any other rookie class. turner should have been defensive rookie of the year. so there’s a difference between having a starter and having a guy just set the pace for other rookies.
regardless you’re saying 6-7 hits. that’s a 60-70% hit rate. as a rams fan sure i’ll take that. it’s just astronomical the chances of that happening.
InvaderRamModeratorBut I think that in the end when you count the hit percentage, the 2024 draft will provide more players.
well if you’re looking at just hits and not the quality of hits and if you’re looking at percentages and not raw numbers then yes this draft class could surpass past year’s due to the rams having fourteen picks in 23 vs ten in 24. and the rams having a first round pick this year vs none in 23. they’d only need to hit on five to yield a higher percentage. i’d say the rams hit on 6 of the 14 players they drafted last year. if you don’t count allen, then it’s really only 5. so they would only need to hit on 4 this year. but the quality of picks this year is certainly higher due to having a first round pick.

InvaderRamModeratorThis draft may even be better than last year’s.
that’s a tall order.
puka has a rookie season for the ages. oroy if not for stroud having his equally startling season but at qb of all positions.
avila day one starter with upside.
turner should have been in the discussion for droy.
byron young has a solid season to build off. started 16 of 17 games.
evans starting punter and kickoff guy.
so not just four starters out of this draft. five if you include evans. you’d need one rookie to break records and another at least in contention for some kind of regular season award.
so karty if he sticks at kicker is equal to evans.
you’d need one of verse or fiske to break two defensive rookie records. corum to be in contention on the other side for offensive rookie of the year. or perhaps even kinchens breaking the rookie record for interception. and the other two having solid seasons as pretty much day one starters.
i don’t see that happening.

InvaderRamModeratori mean if he really is a future pro bowler then that could be quite the secondary. not necessarily the best but very capable. especially if white can find his previous form.
InvaderRamModeratori’m still holding out hope donald pulls a brady and decides to come back…
the thought of playing next to fiske and verse has to be running through his mind a little bit. a little bit.
InvaderRamModeratorhis length. specifically arm length. is the only thing that bothers me. if only his arms were 2 inches longer.
but i’ll also say he’s probably my favorite pick.
InvaderRamModeratori would love nothing more than to see stafford back. sign him through 2028 and give him more guaranteed. sure.
with the offense the way it’s designed now i could totally see him playing another five years.
InvaderRamModeratorwv wrote: I dont get the feeling that the Rams have closed the gap tween them and the 49ers.
That’s a separate issue though, right? And can they do that in just one draft?
yeah. i don’t know that they’ve closed the gap.
yet.
i do see a general trend in their off-season and it was to get more physical. and i’m pretty sure it’s a direct response to how the niners have handled them. they went grunt over finesse. from signing jackson to drafting verse and fiske. on that i think it was the right approach. i just don’t know if it’ll work.
not in love with the verse pick. or the fiske pick… but i do like the thought of them playing together. i like the chemistry there. don’t know if it’ll work one level up in competition but i’ll be rooting for them.
i like the corum pick and even see the potential in him being better even than kyren. i do want to acknowledge that the chances of that are not high. that was a pretty high bar set by kyren, but i do really like corum’s potential that much.
kinchen looks good on paper, but who knows. i’ve read plenty of negative reports on him too so we’ll see.
i’ll only comment on one more player. karty. glad they got him and hope he can fill the gaping hole that was the kicking game last year.
