InvaderRamModerator
In a recent episode of “The Athletic Football Show with Robert Mays,” McVay opened up about the issues at hand.
yeah. if anybody hasn’t seen that interview yet you should. very cool interview. zn posted it somewhere.
InvaderRamModeratori keep seeing mentions of both tight ends.
i like it.
also. verse and fiske. i hope we keep hearing more and more about those two. maybe the two most critical players on defense right now?

InvaderRamModeratorInvaderRamModeratori woulda liked to see him extended.
InvaderRamModeratorthat was an interesting conversation.
InvaderRamModeratorTheme of 2024 could be winning at the margins. Regression in some phases is to be expected; where can Rams progress? Kicking–32nd in 2023 Field position–24th T/O margin–21st Takeaways–30th Pressure%-25th Others: 4th down, timeouts, clock mgmt
yeah.
for me special teams and turnovers need to improve.
InvaderRamModeratorand that would include mcvay’s offense correct?
and that also includes mahomes in reid’s offense?
InvaderRamModeratorAnyway. The point is, I am wondering if Ryan Wendell is that level. Best Rams OL coach since Houck? You can’t say that after just 1 year but that’s where my thoughts are tending.
i agree with you about nutten and timmerman. and just as you say it’s too early to say about wendell it’s a little early to anoint jackson and dotson. but on paper that trio looks top drawer.
InvaderRamModeratori don’t think i’m going on a limb when i say avila goes into this season with the most potential of any center the rams have had in the past 30 years.
Since Doug Smith retired after 1991. And Avila is both more athletic than Smith and weighs in at 73 pounds more. 😲
ok. another question. the jackson dotson combo. best pair of guards the rams have had in the past thirty years?
InvaderRamModeratorBrandon Thorn of the Trench Warfare Substack just released part 1 of his 2024 OL Almanac. One of the best offensive line analysts, Thorn considered the Rams one of his two breakout units heading into the 2024 season. Said Thorn,
“Head coach Sean McVay has gradually morphed his running game from a zone-based scheme to a gap-heavy one with Duo as the central concept. This has emphasized more size, power and differing skill-sets than what the Rams have leaned towards in recent years…Entering the 2024 season the Rams have gone from the 24th heaviest unit last season to the 3rd heaviest with the off-season addition of Jonah Jackson in free agency that bumped last year’s rookie second-round pick Steve Avila inside to center. Add in Kevin Dotson coming off a breakout season as one of the most physically imposing guards in the league and the Rams all of a sudden are armed with a potentially dominant interior trio that can control football games. Left tackle Alaric Jackson’s ability to hold up in pass protection against higher-end competition remains a question mark, but the four other starters across from him lack any glaring concerns, providing this line with a ‘trump card’ as a run blockers and shrewd enough scheming to cover up their primary weakness. McVay’s transformation from having a smaller, quicker line operating in a zone heavy scheme should be complete this season and the pieces are in place for the results to lead to an elite ground game in 2024.”
In Thorn’s preseason offensive line rankings, he ranked the Rams at number 11 heading into the season in the ‘solid offensive lines’ tier. With that said, it will wouldn’t be surprising to see the Rams jump into the top-seven by the end of the season.
This is a group that the Rams have invested heavily in over the last few years. While they rank tied for 25th in total draft capital, they are the sixth-highest paid unit in the NFL. Avila remains the best value for the Rams at center as he’s paid $2.1M in 2024. Said Thorn on Avila,
“Avila balled out as a rookie at left guard and despite kicking inside to center this season, has plenty of experience there dating back to his days at TCU. Avila is also in the perfect scheme to capitalize on his skill-set.”
InvaderRamModeratornot a tweet but i thought i’d put it here.
it’s not particularly an inspired take but i think it’s accurate. i don’t expect a phenomenal season from stafford but only because the oline and running game will be so dominant he won’t need to.
InvaderRamModeratori don’t think i’m going on a limb when i say avila goes into this season with the most potential of any center the rams have had in the past 30 years.
InvaderRamModeratorThe Rams won’t have Aaron Donald on their defensive line this season, but they may still be able to benefit from his experience.
Donald announced his retirement in March and part of the team’s plan to replace him at defensive tackle came into focus during the second day of the draft. That’s when the Rams traded up to acquire a second-round pick they used to select Braden Fiske, who starred at Florida State after transferring from Western Michigan last season.
Fiske was never teammates with Donald, but he has spoken to the former Ram since joining the team and has plans “to get some workouts in during the next couple of weeks before training camp.” Fiske has one big lesson down before any meeting, however.
“I have to be me,” Fiske said, via DJ Siddiqi of Forbes. “I have to build my own legacy and that’s what I’m looking forward to. I don’t feel like I’m really filling shoes, but I have to create my own shoes. That’s kind of what it is. I’m just excited to be a part of it and I know that’ll kind of always be the comparison of who’s going to fill his shoes, but somebody has to do it.”
Kobie Turner and Bobby Brown will also play key roles on the defensive line for the Rams and they’ll need all three players to thrive in order to replicate anything like the impact Donald had on opposing offenses.
InvaderRamModeratorso does this say anything about lake?
i’m happy but also a little disappointed because i can’t help but think that this doesn’t happen if lake impressed in otas.
that’s seven veteran dbs and i’m assuming the eighth db is rookie kinchens.
InvaderRamModeratorAvila is likely a step up at center. It’s really a good thing that his transition to NFL center is being handled by Wendell–a former starting center and guard for the Patz who played in the playoffs under Scarnecchia for a few years and was voted a team captain in 2015 (though he missed that season w/ injuries). That last sentence was a bit long winded but you get the point.
as avila goes so does this oline. if he stands out then the rams oline can be among the best.
and i agree. Wendell might just be the ideal guy to oversee his development. looking at his college career center might actually be a better fit for him.
also on wendell. he’s from diamond bar. and although that’s no guarantee i could easily see him staying with the rams for a long time.
InvaderRamModeratorHe pointed out Jerry Bus’s son used to run the Lakers. Noone complained.
well jerry’s kids have run that team into the ground.
InvaderRamModeratori thought i locked that cage. haha.
safe travels.
InvaderRamModeratorplus a first-time coordinator
also at the time lovie was a first time coordinator as well so pretty much an unknown quantity like shula.
it’s gonna be fun to watch.
InvaderRamModeratorif the rams lose donald and morris and still are able to finish top 10 that’d be a pretty amazing accomplishment.
would it be unprecedented?
i remember when martz hired lovie and the rams d turned around in 2001. did they have to make drastic personnel changes? is that when they added lewis, pickett, and archuleta?
InvaderRamModeratortrevor lawrence just signed a 5 year 275 million extension with 200 million guaranteed.
the price just keeps going up.
InvaderRamModeratorUltimately, this group’s ranking hinges on how well Verse can play across from Young.
i’d say it actually hinges on how much of a leap young and turner can make in their second year.
rookie pass rushers rarely bust out immediately. but usually do in their second and third years no? so for me if young and turner can step up in donald’s absence then the defense might be ok and possibly even elevate verse and fiske’s play their rookie years.
InvaderRamModeratorDuring the latest episode of “Behind The Grind,” director of scouting strategy James Gladstone told Les Snead and Sean McVay that the Rams landed four of the top 50 players on their board by drafting Jared Verse, Braden Fiske, Blake Corum and Kamren Kinchens in the first three rounds.
if the rams know something the rest of the league doesn’t, i’m all for it. i definitely could see all four becoming starters at some point.

InvaderRamModeratorIt’s a small, small sample size without pads on. But my eye is on sixth-round rookie receiver Jordan Whittington, particularly his play energy away from the ball despite contact being limited.
maybe the thing i’m most excited about so far in the offseason. as you and others have mentioned before it’s unusual when you hear and read this much about a rookie prospect this early. it’s not just jourdan. i don’t know if sean mcvay has said anything yet, but lafleur was talking about him the other day. it seems like other members of the press have made a note about how much he has stood out.
now if sean mcvay starts talking about him, that’s when my ears will really start perking up.
this offense could be so special. just need to hear more positive things about avila at center and allen at tight end.
With veteran tight end Tyler Higbee recovering from knee surgery, tight end Davis Allen appeared to pick up right where he left off with Stafford.
InvaderRamModeratorWhy do I believe this will change? The Rams have dropped plenty of clues over this offseason. The most interesting sign is their moves on the coaching staff. TEs coach Nick Caley is taking over as Passing Game Coordinator. Caley’s roots go back to New England, working with TEs and FBs with the Patriots going back to 2017. Each year Caley was in New England, they were among the top teams in using 12, 21, and 22 package looks. The Rams’ new hires also indicate this as well.
Their new quarterbacks coach, Dave Ragone, arrived from Atlanta, where he served as offensive coordinator under Arthur Smith. Atlanta led the NFL in 12-personnel looks last season, and was top-five in 21, 22, and 13-personnel usage as well. Nate Scheelhaase, their new offensive assistant coach, came from Iowa State, who was near the top of CFB in 12 and 13-personnel formations. Another recently hired offensive assistant, Jerry Schuplinski, arrived from Las Vegas. With the Raiders, Schuplinski coached tight ends in 2023 and was the Giants’ quarterbacks coach in 2019 and 2020

InvaderRamModeratorthis might not be a bad thing.
sounds like corum is absorbing the playbook at an accelerated rate. with williams out, hopefully he’s out on the field applying that knowledge. have him as ready as possible for the regular season.
InvaderRamModeratorWilliams is built like a slot-only cornerback at 5-foot-9 and 187 pounds, but he’s been a great outside cornerback for years, and that was just as true in 2023, when he allowed 51 catches on 86 targets for 613 yards, 178 yards after the catch, two touchdowns, four interceptions, 18 pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 69.6. Through his NFL career, Williams has allowed 10 touchdowns to 11 interceptions, and has a lifetime opponent passer rating of 76.7. It’s safe to say that nobody expected that when he came out of college.
yeah. i’m just excited as a whole about this revamped secondary. with the biggest question mark being white. i think williams will be fine. curl is still young but has a ton of experience. and then the biggest thing to me is mcvay has been vocal about lake. i don’t think that can be overlooked. yeah. revamped secondary. adding verse and fiske to the front seven.
still wish donald was here though.
InvaderRamModeratorIf he can develop, that would be an obvious big plus.
not just him but all of the second year players. turner, nacua, avila, allen…
InvaderRamModeratorHelp me understand…….Why does his statement state negative 32 days for SF, then the list states negative 21 days for SF? why the different values?
I had trouble with that too. He’s not very clear sometimes.
i think he’s trying to say that when you include only games with negative rest edge it’s -32. but when you total all games, some of which have a positive rest edge, the total is -21.
InvaderRamModeratorwell. this just makes the corum pick that much more prescient. i think that’s the right word.
