gurley was a disappointment. and i suspect some teammates weren’t too happy about it.

the strength of this offense should be in the backfield.

hopefully mcvay can develop the passing offense and take some pressure off him, but gurley needs to step up.

still would like the rams to draft an edge rusher this year. lots of uncertainty at that position as far as the future goes, and this draft is loaded with them.

he talks about it a little. how the rb and ol weren’t on the same page.

How high is Todd Gurley’s ceiling?

RS: That really all depends on him but what I can say he’s working really hard 5 days a week to explode next season.

right there it kinda sounded like he called gurley out a little bit. might be what he referred to as commitment.

brown made similar comments after the season was over.

But you’re right. He’s 35. And there’s not many LTs that last that long. And when you reach that age you’re more prone to lose it in a hurry, more prone to injury, and it takes longer to recover from the normal wear and tear of a season.

i just want to say this. and i know i keep repeating myself, but he’s got less wear and tear than your average 35 year old. so i’m hopeful. not saying it’s a guarantee, but he’s got a better than average chance of not breaking down for a couple years than your average 35 year old.

    my guess is

    easley brockers donald
    barwin ogletree barron quinn

if barwin is signed. ideally i’d want someone else at lde in place of easley.

i’m liking the moves so far on defense. wade’s got two of his former players now. veterans – one in the secondary and one in the front seven. both have played in wade’s defense. great character. great leadership abilities. can help the other guys learn the system. barwin’s a little older but could still have three good years left in him. he can rush the passer, but he’s also capable of dropping back a little. sounds like he could step in at lolb.

they still need a defensive back. they’re loaded this draft, so they could find one in the second round.

they could also use a defensive end. i still really like kpassagnon. he’s a beast. raw but an absolute beast.

tight end is the other possibility. they could use all three. have four picks in the first four rounds to do it.

    this is developing nicely.

The most interesting aspect of this move is when Whitworth’s inevitable decline will hit. At 35 years old, he is already defying convention by playing as well as he is. When players hit the wall erected by Father Time at the end of their careers, it can tend to happen fast, so the Rams are gambling a little that Whitworth’s arrest is still some way off in the future.

well again, whitworth came into the league his age 25 season in 2006.

he’s only been playing in the nfl for 11 years.

so it gives me some hope he can play at least a couple more years.

ok. now i’m guessing tight end or defensive back in the second round.

FROM SPOTRAC: Robert Woods signed a 5 year, $34,000,000 contract with the Los Angeles Rams, including $15,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $6,800,000. In 2017, Woods will earn a base salary of $3,000,000 and a roster bonus of $4,000,000. Woods has a cap hit of $7,000,000.

However, Woods deal is really a 1 year deal for 7 million. Another 8 million becomes guaranteed if he is on the roster on the 5th day of the 2018 season.

If Woods performs, the rams can keep him for 8 million next year and less than 7 million a year for the remaining length of his contract

If Woods stinks, the rams can cut him before the 5th day of 2018 season without taking any cap hit.

this is a good deal for the rams. low risk.

and with woods going from a run heavy offense to what is presumably a more sophisticated passing offense.

mcvay will find ways to optimize his talent.

and even then i expect them to add more skill position players.

his combine numbers are impressive. especially the 3-cone and short shuttle.

    4.34 s 1.50 s 2.46 s 4.17 s 6.89 s 35 in 10 ft 5 in

explosive athlete. maybe just needs a chance.

it doesn’t matter cuz it looks like the cardinals are gonna sign him.

And…they did. Just signed with Arz.

i’m ok with it. signing him and ignoring that position in a draft that’s so strong at that position seems foolish to me. this defense has a chance to be truly great. don’t ignore that just to add another receiver.

ok i would not be a fan of the jarvis jones pick.

    How come?

he’s a guy who’s been injured and couldn’t produce on a team that seemingly churns out pass rushers.

interesting. he’s got some ability as a safety. they have some flexibility in the secondary as far as the draft goes now.

just have to sign groy now. get him signed and it’s best te/pass rusher/defensive back.

this draft is so deep on defense. their defense could be even better than last year.

i’m not worried about woods. he just needs to be solid which he already has been. and healthy. which he struggles with a bit.

i suspect they have some moves yet to make. they didn’t sign woods to be a superstar.

i don’t even think he has to be.

he was barely a 1000 yard receiver last year, and washington was still a very dominant offense. the ball was spread around, and the tight ends were features heavily. if the rams decide to go tight end early in the draft, that guy could could quickly become the main receiving threat in this offense. drafting a guy like bucky hodges will basically be drafting a huge wide receiver in the mold of a graham.

plus mcvay never had a guy like gurley taking pressure off the passing game. now of course goff and gurley could be busts, and none of this will matter. but woods will be just part of a whole. if he ends up being a number 1 receiver all the better, but i don’t think this offense has to bank on him being that. they just need him to be better than britt. and he can be that just by being a leader. a professional who comes in. works hard. knows the offense. runs precise routes. a guy the qb can rely on. basically everything britt wasn’t.

i’ll say it right now. i want the rams to draft tyus bowser in the second round.

my guess is he won’t even be available. likely gone in second half of the first round. he reminds me a lot of khalil mack. a do everything outside linebacker who could even do some damage at defensive end. he oozes athleticism.

but if he for some reason slips to the rams’ pick, they absolutely should jump on that. he could line up at any of the linebacker spots and excel. he’s that talented.

i want to see them add a center. groy sounds like a great fit.

adding a corner like webster would also be good.

and if possible, if they could sign a left defensive end.

this then sets them up to go pass rusher, safety, or tight end in the second round. and this draft is insanely strong in those three positions. corner too. but i think i’d rather draft a corner later for development and depth. i get this feeling that there will be some diamonds in the rough available later at that position.

if the rams sign him and kayvon webster, this sets the rams up perfectly to go tight end or edge rusher in the second round.

yeah. it makes sense. he’s experienced. he’ll know what kromer expects from his center. it makes too much sense.

the pass blocking should prove immensely should they sign him to go along with whitworth.

    i hope it happens.

so kendricks goes back home. i liked him. i think this was more a matter of the rams trying to create salary cap space and this draft being strong in tight ends.

    i don’t know.

statistically, as i said before, his production is comparable to garcon. he’s young with potential to improve not just on his own but with fit. mcvay and lafleur. can they maximize his talent. garcon flourished under shanahan and mcvay. lafleur has roots in those offenses. this could be the rams garcon signing when garcon signed with washington.

i do have concerns about him staying healthy. he seems to get nicked up a lot. last year for example he could have really taken off after watkins went down. but he banged up his knee, and he struggled after that.

    but the potential is there.

with all that cap space re-sign donald and ogletree.

one thought. don’t know if this has been mentioned.

wonder if they’re giving thought to easley as their defensive end on the left side.

Though Woods and Whitworth are 11 years apart in age, both are regarded as highly disciplined players with outstanding work ethic who can lead by example.

yeah. this is what i like.

both pass the character test with flying colors it would seem.

need some leadership. i’ve always read about how competitive and professional those two guys are. no red flags.

britt, on the other hand, came across as a knucklehead dating back to his days with tennessee. talented for sure. but a bonehead.

they’ve got four picks in the first four rounds.

Then they are clearing cap space to get the other things through free agency. AND they have nearly a dozen LBs plus DE-to-LB conversion candidates on the roster.

IMO and just IMO, naturally, but (so far) I don’t see big problems. To me this is all do-able.

    ..

i think it’s all doable too.

the hardest part is coaching that talent.

and if goff and gurley aren’t the superstar backfield we thought they were, none of that will matter anyway.

    Avatar photoInvaderRam
    Moderator

so the needs as i see it.

    center
    tight end
    defensive end
    outside linebacker
    cornerback
    safety

they’ve got four picks in the first four rounds.

at the very least i expect them to sign a veteran center. i just can’t see them drafting one and plugging him in as a starter. that’d be madness.

i was hoping they could just load up on defense with their first four picks, but cutting kendricks really puts that all up in the air. but it’s also a little bit exciting cuz they could potentially add an explosive tight end in the second round. bucky hodges would be like adding an explosive number one type receiver. especially in this offense. and for a fan base crying out for a big splash on that side of the football. well that’d be a great start.

so i expect them to sign a defensive end soon.

i still hold out hope that calais joins although jags supposedly offering 60 million for four years…

then tight end, outside linebacker, and db can be addresses in the draft.
