even if it was a cheap call the refs totally bungled the onside kick before that. the play clock hit zero well before the kicker even started moving. i mean why aren’t people making more of that?

probably pointing out the obvious here but just rewatched the first half. 10 of their first 13 points were directly off special teams mistakes. and while you could argue the first touchdown could have been avoided had the defense stayed mentally tough, the second score which was a field goal couldn’t be helped short of getting a turnover.

so the game very well could have been 24-3 by the end of the half. that’s still no excuse for what happened in the second half.

i’ll say this though. i might be reading too much into it, but sonofbum looked pissed at the end. even during mcvay’s locker room speech, he looked very displeased. hopefully with the long week he can iron out some things cuz dallas will be a much tougher test.

“This was his best performance yet,” McVay told me as he sat in the coaches’ dressing area of the visitors’ locker room. “Especially after last week (a 27-20 defeat to Washington), when he threw that late interception — he just bounced back and came up huge in crunch time. You know what I like about him? In games, he does not f—- flinch. He’s mentally tough, in good times and bad, and that’s exactly what you want your quarterback to be like. Because it’s an occupational hazard: Bad things are gonna happen when you play this position.”

    i liked that quote.

Before the Rams’ Week 8 bye, they’ll face the Seahawks, Jaguars and Cardinals. Bigger challenges await. But we can expect Goff to be up for it.

yeah them and the cowboys. next 4 weeks will be telling.

but man he looks good. it’s hard not to get ahead of oneself.

that’s why fisher drafted him. his red zone ability.

mcvay did a great job with cousins, but with goff, i think there’s a lot more potential he can tap into.

as good as goff has looked so far there’ll probably be some dips. he’s only 22. but the upside is that he’s only just beginning to scratch the surface.

kurt’s right. if they played in this era of football, they would have set records beyond reach. 700 points in a season? maybe.

they were ahead of their time.

ya know whose fumbles are worrying me right now? todd gurley. the guy has coughed it up at least once all three games.

Except you just listed the WRs.

Last night the guy who spelled Gurley at RB was Tavon.

i did mention gurley. he was the first guy i mentioned.

long-term. tavon is not going to be here to spell gurley. for now? well sure. what else are they going to do with him? use him on jet sweeps? sure. and i understand that just the threat of him running the jet sweep can cause a defense to hesitate.

still. he’s got 40 yards from scrimmage and zero tds on the season. he’s becoming obsolete.

what really astounds me is that he’s not getting his yards by just dumping it off to his running backs. or on short safe passes to his wide receivers. he’s attacking downfield. aggressive. i’d say one of the more aggressive passers in the league. of course this is just through three games.

his ypa is at 10.1. that’s obscene. those are like aaron rodgers numbers. in fact, the only other players above 9 ypa in the league so far are sam bradford, matt ryan, alex smith, and tom brady. and the youngest of those fellas is sam at 29 years old (soon to be 30 in november). the rest are in their 30s or in brady’s case 40. goff is just 22 years old right now. soon to be 23.

now obviously the competition hasn’t been the stiffest for goff yet. and he probably can’t sustain this level of production. but this guy is 22 years old with 10 games of starting experience. to me it just seems ridiculous.

it’s just a perfect storm of scheme, players, and catching everyone off guard i would assume.

i’m just curious as to how those numbers look at the end of the season. that’s the number i’ll be paying more attention to than anything else when it comes to jared.

    tavon’s done.

i think all that is just coach speak. as soon as they can get rid of him they will.

there’s only so many balls that can go around. gurley, watkins, woods, kupp, everett… eventually he’ll be the sixth option on this team. maybe not now but soon he will be. there’s not much use for him anymore.

If Goff the real deal and turns franchise around, that couldbe Fisher’s most enduring legacy (also added Donald and Gurley on his watch).

    respect.

goff on the season. approximate numbers. 70% completion rate. 10.1 ypa. 800 yards passing. 5 tds. 1 int. 118 passer rating.

defense looks horrible. is sonofbum’s streak gonna end?

road game against a divisional opponent. goff is still young and inexperienced. i wanna see more than anything else gurley take this game over. i want everyone to forget about carlos hyde because gurley just absolutely dominates the niner defense.

hyde’s good. and despite that, the niners have scored 12 points this season. that’s the total for both games.

it would qualify as two steps back if the rams lose this game.

Most encouraging, the Rams have 12 recorded completions of 20-plus yards—second to only the Patriots—equaling their total from Goff’s seven starts last season.

wow. that’s encouraging. i mean i’m guessing that’ll open things up for gurley. and on top of that they’ll be less vulnerable to mistakes that eventually happen when you have to string together long drives.

this game tells me much more about Goff than the first two. The first game had an astericks b/c it was Indy. The second had an astericks b/c it was too incestuous. If Goff performs well, on the road, than I’ll know that we have something. If he doesn’t, than there is still hope, but it’s like shit, here we go again.

i actually wonder if mcvay gives it to gurley and sees if he can carry the offense. the niners defense hasn’t given up many passing yards. opposing offenses have gotten most of their yards off the running game.

whereas with mcvay you don’t know if it’ll be run or pass or where the qb will go with the ball. there’s more deception. that’s my guess anyway.

    IF that’s what he means.

And even if he means that, IF that’s true. You would have to show me. The Rams got a lot out of play action last year and by definition that means that you don’t really know what they’re doing from the formation. I will say this.

btw I don’t think that’s what he means.

looking back it maybe he means plays are more conceptual. rather than being its own play. meaning if you learn the concept you can apply it different plays. or different formations…

I wonder what Benoit means, by “every play was its own entity” last year?

my guess is the formation of the play totally telegraphed to the defense where the ball was going.

The designs are intricate but, for the quarterback, the reads are not. If the look is this, throw here; if it’s that, throw there.

as goff plays more. sees more defenses. the plays become ingrained in his memory. his reactions will be quicker. he’ll be able to go from his first read to his second read quicker.

    but it’ll take time.

my expectations are that he throw for over 60% on the season. ypa over 7. throws for double digits tds and more tds than ints.

    How many plays was it?

Because…pictures can dominate our perceptions, so sometimes you have to count.

My guess is that the only pics that went up were the “didn’t see open receivers” pics.

How many of those in reality in the game? How many where he DID see the receivers?

It’s always better IMO to do a real count and give percentages.

i think it was 3-4. i know. not that many. but i said missed some open receivers. i wasn’t trying to make it out to seem he was playing horribly. like i said before. going into the fourth quarter his ypa was excellent.

but the other thing that should be noted. i don’t think blue and gold was trying to make goff out to be some bust. he also made a point to say that goff made good decisions as well. just pointing out mistakes. mistakes that i’m sure goff has seen and will store away for future reference.

i’m hoping in a couple years he will make defenses pay. meaning. instead of dropping 20 points on a defense like this, he’ll be dropping 30+ points. that’s when we’ll all know that it’s clicked for him.

i was lurking over at the herd. blue and gold put up some stills of goff. man he missed some wide open receivers.

i can only hope that the game is still just too fast for him. and that at some point the game slows down for him.

yeah. i’m thinking it takes at least until 2019 before it all finally clicks for him. as he plays more and more i’m hoping the tunnel vision goes away. cuz this mcvay offense could be something else.

the rams should win this game i don’t care how bad their run defense is.

hoyer and that niner passing offense has to be the worst in the league.

sorry. going to add one more thing. i think for most qbs their first three seasons they’re still trying to figure things out. then by their fourth year something clicks. that’s just by looking at stats.

and i’m just talking years of experience. not necessarily games started. now some get it a year earlier or a year later but it’s usually around 3-5 years.

let me just add to that.

i think i’ll be able to say for sure if he belongs or not by the bye week.

as far as how good he can be? assuming he belongs i don’t think we’ll know until his fourth year. so that’ll be 2019.

Goff is young and will have “learning experiences” but he has already shown me he’s an NFL qb. The only questions are HOW good will he be, and how long before he becomes however good he will be.

well let’s just say there are no penalties on that second to last drive. which were no fault of goff. and the rams defense is just enough to stop washington on their last td drive.

hey all of a sudden we’re talking about how goff and gurley brought the rams back from a deficit and beat washington.

let’s see how he does thursday and if he learned anything. i’m waiting until the bye week and see where he’s at then.

overall i’d have to say though that goff did alright. even if he was missing receivers, through the first three quarters he had a 70 percent completion rate at over 10 ypa. his qb rating was at approximately 130.

and the drive before the last they were in position to score another td and then the penalties.

    we’ll see.

it concerns me too. i’m just hoping that at some point the game slows down for him. it’s only been 9 games. if at the end of the season we’re still reading things like this i’ll be more than concerned.
