InvaderRamModeratorI’d be very surprised if McV was the onliest coach doin that. Doesnt seem like rocket science.
w
vi would think so.
and if by some chance he was the only one doing it, i’m not sure that he’d want that getting out.
and if it was at least partially true, i don’t know that i’d want goff so reliant on this strategy cuz defenses will adjust i assume. maybe as goff develops, mcvay will wean him off.
InvaderRamModeratorjosh reynolds. possibly another find in this draft.
InvaderRamModeratorgame not as close as the score. at the same time, they should have just blown this saints team out.
only got to see the second half, but that’s how it appeared to me. too many field goals. gotta complete these drives.
InvaderRamModeratorgurley has to have a big game for the rams to win.
i’m getting kinda worried though. new orleans’ offense might run right over the rams tomorrow.
InvaderRamModeratoryes. i hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving.
InvaderRamModeratorany kind of berry. pecan.
InvaderRamModeratorthis is from the same thread. i also bolded the part where he talks about how minnesota used goff’s tendencies against him. he sounds like he knows what he’s talking about anyway!

When I share this tidbit of info let me validate it by my playing experience and who taught the class: West Hills College: Coach Clausen (his sons were Jimmy Clausen, who played for the Bears, KC Clausen who I believed played for KC)
Northern Arizona University: Andy Reid, Brad Childress) Mesa State College: Donnie Holmes: receiver for CardinalsThis is the cumulative beliefs from this group.
Keys for the receivers:
Presnap read: work smart! know where the play is going and what where you are supposed to be. give yourself space to work in.
1) when you line up you need to distinguish what defense and coverage they are in.
If it is man to man coverage- these are the rules: you need to run precise patterns in a timely fashion, your pattern will include more straight line or precision cuts, you have to get into the db so you can get away from him, as you break you lean into the db and use his body to push off or go the other way to create separation. you explode off your first step at the line of scrimmage.
2) if they are in zone: the precision of the pattern is not important, the spacing is important. your job is to find a seam, gap, window in the zone. your pass patterns are rounded, sometimes delayed (because you are allowing the defense to clear out and then you go where they vacated.
Does everybody remember the Super Bowl when Peyton Manning was yelling, Omaha. He is doing a presnap read, Omaha: cold mean, audible, blitz, man to man or zone coverage.
The receivers have the same thing: when they come to the line of scrimmage they could place their hands on their waste (meaning) I am in man coverage I am going deep, or they can let their arms hand which means 10 yard cushion, throw me the ball. The point I am trying to stress is there is a ton of communication going on at the line of scrimmage by everybody.
When I say Sammy is not a natural receiver, he excels at catching, running, getting of the ball. But rule number one: you have to be your QB’s best friend. There are many times when he is running routes he is open early and not feeling the coverage. He is running the route and not taking what the D is giving him. There is a difference between breaking off your pattern and running yourself open. I am not a tech savy guy so I can not show you what I am talking about, but he does not feel the coverage or exploit its weakness. and yet he is still open a lot.
With Goff, I feel he looks early and then if it is not open, he fixates on the crossing route or the back in the flat. I wish he would look the free safety off, and then go backside to Sammy.
McVay runs a lot of misdirection, motion to assist the QB with the coverage (or pre snap) reads. Minnesota took the tape on Goff, took away his running game, and used his tendencies against him. What ever side he runs to: look for the man underneath or the back in the flat. That is why he was throwing into such tight spots. If Goff ever throws to his backside receiver to make the FS play honest it will get back to looking like everybody is wide open. Sammy needs to feel the coverage and make himself big. You can tell where the ball is just by where the defense is, you do not have to look back at the QB.
I said this at the 49 er game, put Sammy in the slot and get him the ball. He is one of the most explosive athletes on the field, good things will happen.

InvaderRamModeratorThe emphasis is more on avoiding turnovers than attacking.
yeah. and i expect that to change. not this season but next. but also. when things break down. which they will. goff will get better at improvising. he’s already shown signs of doing it. mcvay has alluded to it. but the next step would be to do it against elite competition.
I think LA is prettymuch saying the same thing, in his LA-way.
honestly, that’s how i took it. goff is doing a very good job playing within the system. but against elite defenses. when things are going to go off script. that’s where he struggles. but what can you expect given his experience. we’ll just have to see if he can adapt. i think he will as he learns the system. and he knows where everyone is supposed to be at any given time. when he and the receivers develop that chemistry. when a play breaks down, where are his receivers going to go. i don’t think all that can be learned in one offseason. my guess is this will develop as they play more. and this next offseason. when they can spend more time just learning the offense rather than preparing for a given opponent.
i also expect mcvay to put more responsibility on goff’s shoulders as he continues to learn this offense. i don’t think this is just a one offseason process. maybe this next offseason, they take the next step.
November 20, 2017 at 6:43 pm in reply to: Why the Rams offense struggles against better defenses.. #77764
InvaderRamModeratorgoff is only 23. first full season. he’ll get better with another offseason when he and the offensive group can get together and really hone in on their weaknesses. i’m not too worried at this point. kupp can get better just individually. goff can get better individually. but this group can become more cohesive as they play more together. i’m not too worried at this point. this is a young group overall. you expect hiccups.
goff will get better under pressure. wide receivers will get better at winning one on one matchups. and with experience. maybe they’ll get better and clutch situations. kupp had a 2 really bad plays. but he’s a rookie. i really expect that guy to break out next season.
InvaderRamModeratori thought for sure they’d try to get him involved in this one. maybe things just didn’t fall that way.
InvaderRamModeratorrams couldn’t force any turnovers.
playing on the road.
kupp can’t cough up the ball. also dropped one very catchable very crucial catch.
run defense broke down. maybe they were tired.
i think they’re close. but a ways to go.
InvaderRamModeratorthe rams will be playing at home. instead of a hostile road environment.
we’ll see.
InvaderRamModeratoralso just want to again emphasize how good a job i think Snead has done. he traded that number two pick for a bunch of first rounders and a second rounder too i think?
his worst picks are grob and quick. one could also argue tavon although he is still making a contribution to this team. so there’s that.
but lots of long term contributors on this team selected by him as well, and this year might be his masterpiece. might be.
but on top of that he pulled off that trade to move up and grab goff. which i thought at the time was a mistake.
so he trades down from a draft that had luck and rgiii and trades up in a draft with goff and wentz. woulda thought it was the wrong move but so far it looks like the right move.
now i know he never woulda gotten luck with the number 2 pick and a big reason they traded down was they had bradford at the time. so yeah luck goes into a lot of these decisions, but shoot. can’t think of too many bad decisions he’s made.
and again. this year might end up being his best draft class yet.
so as much as mcvay means. as much as goff means. snead will be responsible for building the team around those two. so far so good.
InvaderRamModeratorthat was good stuff there. thanks.

InvaderRamModeratorif there’s one good thing you can say about kroenke, it’s that he’s a patient dude. even if this season hadn’t been the wild success it has been, i’m pretty sure he would have given mcvay and snead awhile to build this team the way they wanted.

InvaderRamModeratorYou know, I think both New Orleans and Philadelphia are better than Minnesota.
ergo, the Rams better win this game.
yeah i think so too. it might have been a different story had bradford and cook been healthy.
this nfc conference is stacked.
and then they got tennessee. i don’t remember ever seeing a string of games like this before.
InvaderRamModeratori really like when goff is in the huddle and coaches are yelling into the headset. at one point they yell at goff to take gurley out, he calmly looks taps gurley and tells him to go to the sideline and then chuckles, “it’s mayhem on the headset right now.”
just confident.
InvaderRamModeratorI don’t know Wade personally but it’s hard to picture him paying players to injure other players.
yeah.
InvaderRamModeratorYou have to give him credit for the core defense Brockers , Donald , Tree , Joyner , Trujo and the Barron trade.
yeah. and i also give him credit for gurley and goff.
his main problem was holding onto guys like britt and grob and cook.
but i seem to remember vermeil having a soft spot for phillips and banks. maybe not quite the same, but in 99 they made some key changes that sparked the turnaround. i say if fisher picks the right offensive coordinator it could have been a different story. but most likely not the huge success it has been this year. i mean the rams swung for the fences on this one and may actually have hit the sweet spot.
InvaderRamModeratori liked fisher. if he could have found a coordinator worth his salt like vermeil did before 99, i think we coulda seen a similar turnaround to the one we are seeing this year. maybe not quite the fireworks we’re seeing right now and maybe not exactly 7-2 but close.
as it is i wouldn’t trade mcvay for any of that. i think mcvay is the better decision now and for the long-term. he’s squeezing every bit of potential out of the offense, and i like sonofbum more than i like gregg.
InvaderRamModeratorsounds good. i’ll have to give it a try.
InvaderRamModeratorthat was a little more like it, but i wish they could just show it from start to finish and then dissect it.
InvaderRamModeratori liked this soundfx. i usually think they’re pretty boring. maybe it’s cuz you could hear goff’s headset along with the play on the field.
instead of cutting up all the bits, i wish they’d just play the headset along with goff’s mic for one whole play. like the one for the 94 yarder.
November 16, 2017 at 7:38 pm in reply to: Benoit: McVay’s Brilliant Offensive Mind … & more McVay praise from others #77536
InvaderRamModeratorShanahan believed in marrying his running and passing games, such that all of his plays initially looked the same.
it makes sense to do that. do other offenses not do this? i wonder what boras did. was he telegraphing what the offense doing on all his plays?
Together, McVay and LaFleur have adopted many of Atlanta’s zone-running and play-action concepts.
i wondered if they might incorporate some of the falcons offense into this offense. i’m glad that this is the case.
InvaderRamModeratorI think Havenstein did ok against Clowney in the second half.
i also seem to remember some of the damage clowney did was against guys like kupp and higbee. which was probably not the best idea.

InvaderRamModeratoryeah i’ve been ready for this game since monday. it’s like i can’t wait for the next game, but i also want to savor each victory. i’ll probably go watch the houston game tonight.
i agree that special teams will have to make a difference. maybe a big return or two. a big time field goal or something.
i also think goff is gonna have to do something special. i don’t know. rams have been good on the road, but this might be their toughest road test yet.
InvaderRamModeratorthe only thing i worry about with saffold is he seems to get injured when they move him outside. maybe it’s having to deal with the quicker more athletic defensive ends and having to extend himself more that does it i don’t know.
InvaderRamModeratorwow. that’s impressive. he’s just manhandling guys. i hope he’s able to play at full strength this week.
InvaderRamModeratori don’t know if i missed anyone.
oh i missed kurt warner. duh.
one season he led in four categories. he ranked first in ypa, aypa, nypa, and anypa.
one season he led in all five categories.
InvaderRamModeratorfor what it’s worth. i’m not sure i’d consider the rams the best defense in the league
I don’t think they’re accounting for the competition. ARZ, the Giants, Houston without Watson.
Yeah they’re supposed to beat those guys, but, that in itself doesn’t mean they will fare as well against stronger teams.
yeah. these next string of games will be revealing.
