well then sign aaron. holy crap. how long are we gonna have to hear about how they have enough space to extend aaron before they actually extend him?
i get this sick feeling in my stomach that aaron will be gone in a year or two.

InvaderRamModeratorthis was an article by matt bowen on brandin cooks from 2014 before he got drafted.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2021716-why-brandin-cooks-is-the-nfls-next-impact-slot-receiver
“Two-Way-Go” In the Slot
When watching Cooks, I see a very similar skill set to my former teammate with the Rams, Az Hakim, when focusing on his ability to win on the release from a slot alignment.
Hakim had a unique ability to take advantage (or expose) nickel cornerbacks inside of the numbers because of the “two-way-go” (release inside or outside).
Different than an alignment outside of the numbers (where defensive backs can pin the receiver to the boundary), the slot alignment gives receivers the opportunity on the release—and within the route stem—to use the extra space to create separation.
As I broke down this past Friday when looking at the NFL route tree, Cooks has the ability to run multiple concepts from the slot because of the quickness at the line of scrimmage to get on the edge of defensive backs in press-man.
Here’s a look at the route schemes Cooks will run in the NFL using the All-22 film with the Bears in a Doubles alignment (2×2 formation) out of Posse/11 personnel (3WR-1TE-1RB).
Check out the option route, inside vertical seam, shallow drive route (part of the Hi-Lo) series, etc. And don’t forget about the bubble screen where Cooks can produce after the catch because of the open-field ability he put on tape back at Oregon State.
But it all starts with the opportunity to work a defensive back with a “two-way-go” on the release.
Matchups/Formation Flexibility
When I study wide receiver prospects, I focus on possible fits from a scheme perspective at the NFL level.
With Cooks, I’m thinking of the multiple alignments inside of the numbers (along with the stack/bunch looks) that we saw from DeSean Jackson this past season with the Eagles or the West Coast concepts of Andy Reid’s Chiefs.
Give Cooks a free release to create space off the ball. That’s where he can use that natural ability to change directions, accelerate out of cuts and get his hands on the football in the open field.
And that might be the real story here with the Oregon State product.
Similar to what I expect from the Rams and Tavon Austin this season as the second-year pro continues to develop, Cooks’ production after the catch is key. This is how he can earn his money in the NFL and create matchup issues for opposing secondaries.
I do believe Cooks carries a first-round grade after watching his tape. And despite his lack of ideal size at the position to create leverage (or box-out defenders), his ability to win with speed and make plays after the catch can’t be ignored.
it’s weird. he mostly talks about him playing inside. but his career, as far as i can understand, has mostly been on the outside although he has played some slot.
i’m curious as to how mcvay intends to use him.
InvaderRamModeratormcvay loved those bunch wr sets.
i wonder what it’ll look like with woods, kupp, and cooks bunched together. kupp and cooks in particular have unreal short area quickness.
i imagine defensive backs will be confused as hell as to which receiver to defend as they’re coming out of their breaks…

InvaderRamModerator6.76 SEC
3.81 SECunreal. he’s also got big hands – 9 5/8″.
saw in clips that he ran some jet sweeps as well. and i read that he can play slot as well as outside. i think he’s more versatile than some are giving him credit for. no, he’s not exactly sammy watkins, but maybe he can do other things that sammy couldn’t.
in some ways i think he is what tavon was supposed to be.
they still need some physicality, and i’m hoping they draft a tight end at some point. although. i also read that the rams third wr was playing like 90% of the snaps??? so maybe they don’t feel like they need a tight end. i don’t know. they need something else when they get in the redzone. i don’t think woods, cooks, and kupp are an ideal combo down there. need some bigger targets who can maybe also block for gurley. i would think 2 te sets would be better in the redzone. just my amateur opinion.
but shoot. goff gurley cooks? obj would have been ridiculous. absolutely ridiculous. but that ain’t bad either. and less costly.
still need a lt.
InvaderRamModeratorFYI on Brandin Cooks and #Rams: He’s from California. His agent is Jared Goff’s agent. Sense is the #Rams have a good shot at re-signing him long term.
yeah. just read that the two have practiced together in the offseason. liking this move a little more. goff already has a good feel for and timing with cooks. there shouldn’t be too much of a chemistry problem like he had with watkins.
#Rams like Cory Littleton (ILB) and Samson Ebukam (OLB) a lot.
and apparently they don’t like reynolds and thomas.
i think brandin is definitely an upgrade over watkins. but they can’t lose him. they need to sign him long-term. but it sounds like they’re going to aggressively pursue that. goff has a good feel for him already. probably has his stamp of approval. this could end up being a good trade.

InvaderRamModeratorthey do get a fourth rounder back which i’m assuming they’ll use on oline or linebacker. i’d still like to see them draft a tight end. i am not a fan of higbee.
InvaderRamModeratorI don’t want to give up a first round pick for a rental.
cooks > watkins. but yeah, rams better get him signed to a long-term contract. or this sucks.
my immediate thoughts are the rams got better on offense. a lot better. IF everyone stays healthy and continues to progress.
rams better load up on some backups for the oline.
but cooks is good. he’s real good. better than sammy.
InvaderRamModeratorzn, thanks for posting the college visits list, I was looking for that.
I see only one likely first round pick on that list; Vita Vea. I know the list is incomplete right now, but only one? That’s odd. I would think the team wants to have a private visit with the kid they take at #23.
makes me think they want the trade down. but i don’t think it’s a complete list like you said. for example they brought james daniels in for a visit but he’s not listed on there.
am listening to sirius nfl right now. they had jedd fisch who i either forgot or didn’t remember is now a senior offensive assistant with the rams. last year he was offensive coordinator and interim head coach for the bruins. they asked him about kolton miller and he all he had to say about miller is that he never missed a practice. didn’t quite know what to make of it. if the rams had any interest in miller i wonder what kind of input he would have. i’d have to think a lot.
the ridiculous part of me speculates that there is real interest miller but they’re trying to keep a lid on it. thus the muted response from fisch. a pre-draft visit would be easy to do with miller and who better to get insight from than his former offensive coordinator?

InvaderRamModeratorif the rams could get the browns to trade their 35th and 64th pick for their 23rd that’d be brilliant.
two second round picks and two third rounders. could get some quality depth there.
InvaderRamModeratorThe Professor
According to http://www.draftace.com/draft-visit-tracker/, the rams are the only teams to have had pre-draft visits with OT Tyrell Crosby Oregon and LB Ogbonnia Okoronkwo Oklahoma. They are also only other team that has had a visits with DE Justin Lawler SMU (TB) and one team with DE Joe Ostman Central Michigan (Oak).
As teams are allowed 30 visits and many teams only have 5 to 10 visits listed, these players may be interviewed by other teams (or were interviewed at the combine, senior bowl, etc.).
The rams also interviewed the RB from SDSU Rashaad Penny, but he shows up on about 8-10 teams lists.
i like what i’ve read about okoronkwo. i also really really like what i’ve read about penny.
okoronkwo’s 40 was low. so maybe he drops which would be great. he’s low to the ground. he’s explosive. 38″ vert. 10 foot broad jump. and he ran a sub-6.9 3-cone. an excellent number for an edge rusher. so he’s short and a little slower. i know snead loves that cuz it could mean a bargain in the third round.

InvaderRamModeratoralso they’re bringing in daniels for a pre-draft visit so the interest is very real.
InvaderRamModerator2019 may have as many as 5/6 LOT first round guys and 2/3 more in round two.
interesting. i don’t know either way but if it’s true then maybe wait another year.
i really do like miller though. and i also like james daniels from iowa. i think center is very important. and if they like him enough get him in the first round. i read some great things about him.
April 2, 2018 at 12:39 pm in reply to: espn NFC west panel: Do Rams have best overall defense in NFL? #84802
InvaderRamModeratori would agree and say not yet.
depends a lot on how ebukam and littleton develop. although i have a lot of faith that they’ll work out from what little we’ve seen of them. i think a lot depends on how jj develops too. he was already pretty good, but can he get better?
and then of course how does suh adjust to being a nose tackle. i think he’ll be fine. i think his attitude problems are overstated personally. he’s no haynesworth. not even close.
and then of course who they draft.
so lots of question marks still.
InvaderRamModeratori just wanna say that i’m glad aaron didn’t say lol.
April 1, 2018 at 10:46 am in reply to: stuff just on Suh (not the signing)…highlights n other stuff #84757
InvaderRamModeratori really feel like the suh donald combo will work.
of course i said that about the donald quinn combo. but injuries really derailed that. hopefully, suh and donald stay healthy.
i’m not too concerned about the dirty play. all things being equal could i live without it? of course. i’d rather he just leave that stuff out. but ultimately, i don’t think it’s going to hurt the team too much.
nor am i too concerned about comments that he took plays off. i think when you play as many snaps as he has your body will wear down. and you will take more plays off. i anticipate that suh will play less snaps with the rams and will therefore be fresher during games.
i am concerned about comments that he freelanced way too much in the defense. i guess we’ll just have to see. if the defense is playing great, maybe he won’t feel the need to play outside the system? i don’t know. was his freelancing in the past the product of playing on a mediocre defense and him feeling the need to make a play? i don’t know.
but when you have three defensive linemen on first and second down. who all three command a double team. don’t know how that can be a bad thing.
i will say that i always liked suh. even back to when it was suh bradford in the 2010 draft. even despite all the dirty plays. i always felt he was a great player. always imagined what it would be like with him as a ram. so i’m glad they got him to sign.

InvaderRamModeratorJared Goff was NFL's 11th-best deep passer in 2017, according to this metric
Jared Goff was NFL’s 11th-best deep passer in 2017, according to this metric
By: Cameron DaSilva | March 30, 2018 2:33 pm ET
Jared Goff took a huge step in the right direction last season after an utterly horrendous rookie campaign. To be fair, his struggles in 2016 weren’t entirely his fault, but there were some already (and unfairly) calling him a bust.
He silenced those doubters last season by racking up 3,804 yards, 28 touchdown passes and seven interceptions. He completed 62.1 percent of his passes with a rating of 100.5, earning his first trip to the Pro Bowl.
One of the knocks on his game, however, was his deep-ball passing. He seemed to struggle on throws deep downfield, which partially contributed to Sammy Watkins’ underwhelming numbers. Goff may not have been as bad as some want to believe, though.
According to Next Gen Stats, he ranked 11th in the NFL in that department. The metric was a composite score of each quarterback’s ranking in passer rating, completion rate, percentage of yards on deep passes and touchdown rate.
Jared Goff narrowly missed the list, finishing 11th among qualifying quarterbacks. The second-year pro boasted a 95.8 passer rating and 35.4 percent completion rate on deep throws, but threw just three touchdown passes of this sort.
Alex Smith led the NFL with a score of five, ranking first in passer rating, completion rate and percentage of yards on deep passes. He was also second in touchdown rate.
Russell Wilson was the only other NFC West quarterback in the top 11, finishing fifth. He ranked third in yards accumulated on deep passes, which illustrates just how frequently he took shots downfield and connected.
It’s not the best metric out there, but it does combine a number of important statistics to find the best in that department.

InvaderRamModeratorGaines was pretty good in his final season with the Rams. I don’t know how he fared in Buffalo this year, or if he was a poor fit for Wade, but that makes the loss of Watkins a bit more painful.
gaines did well in buffalo. but he was a bad fit for wade’s defense.
still hurts though. the longer and longer watkins is gone the more it hurts – mainly because there’s no second round pick this year. would have been good for picking an edge rusher or offensive lineman. or even a tight end.
thinking about it. i agree with those who say the rams should focus on development and forget about obj. mainly because of the draft capital needed to pull it off and the dent it would put on the salary cap. i think kupp can get a lot better. no, he’ll never provide the same things obj can. that guy can pretty much do it all. so it’ll be more about putting complimentary pieces together. i think reynolds has promise. tight ends too. draft another tight end this year and develop them.
at some point you gotta just develop players. unless the nfl wants to do away with a salary cap. then spend away by all means.
InvaderRamModeratori think so too. looking more and more like a trade down.
InvaderRamModeratorhere’s another report on daniels
https://www.revengeofthebirds.com/2018/2/9/16994122/2018-nfl-draft-prospect-james-daniels-iowaIowa – Junior
6’3’’, 295 Pounds
Strongest offensive line class in quite a bit of time, and I’m totally okay with saying that. You could legitimately see nine offensive linemen go in the first two rounds of this draft. A surprise entry for the draft, James Daniels is coming from Iowa, which has a history of producing talented lineman. I would love his pedigree.Strengths: James Daniels versatility is unbelievable, playing both guard positions and center with the ability to succeed at all of those positions. Plays the run game like a mauler and seems to read a blitz in time. Not one to get bull-rushed, and athletic enough to play the next level of the defense. Athleticism is off the charts, as he has lower body strength that would squat a car. If you need an immediate plug-and-play guard, James Daniels can be that guy, and seems unselfish about communication.
Weaknesses: When climbing to the next level, James Daniels seems to struggle against fast linebackers. Extends his arms too much, so much so that he seems to have one holding call a game. That has more to do with the technical part of the game, tends to overthink on passing plays, and typically plays bullish when he needs to pull.
Cardinals Summary: I was impressed with A.Q. Shipley, but at some point, you need to have a permanent mainstay at center. You don’t even have to play him at center, as he could be a right guard for us, and probably still play at a consistent level. Overall, my type of lineman who’s tenacious with his run blocking.
Projected: Late 1st-2nd Round
Stats: None
Pro Comparison: Jason Kelce – Philadelphia Eagles
InvaderRamModeratorjames daniels. rams are bringing him in for a pre-draft visit in april.
i’m intrigued. schrager mocked him to the rams in his latest mock draft.
graded as a first to second round pick. arguably the best center prospect in the draft.
only 20 years old. rare athlete for his position. i might be more worried about center than i am left tackle. although really. they’re both old. but whitworth seems to be the healthier of the two.
rams could trade down and still get this guy. and at this point. i’m really more worried about depth. so more draft picks wouldn’t hurt.
Note: I wouldn’t necessarily assume this guy is a tackle in the Rams eyes. Kromer has a long history of putting guys like this at guard.
well. he’s got length (35″ arms). so i think he could play guard or tackle.

InvaderRamModeratorThe 49ers can trade for him, too.
garoppolo obj gronk garcon?
ehhh… that might actually be a little scary to be honest.
or maybe mcvay is bluffing the niners into trading three first rounders for two big headaches???
InvaderRamModeratorI think Gronk is being held together by ductape at this point in his career. I would not give up more than a third round pick for him.
w
vi wouldn’t trade a first rounder either.
i would give up the third rounder. and then draft kolton miller with the 23rd if he’s available.
he’d be the swing tackle. and possibly take over at left tackle in 2019. or play right tackle if they think whitworth has another year left in him with an eye toward left tackle in 2020.

InvaderRamModeratorI don’t think they have any cap space.
I don’t know, man, I myself am getting a little impatient with this whole “it’s Friday, which star will they get today” thing.
Time for some real football.
He said, impatiently, knowing full well there was still a ways to go…
…
i wouldn’t know.
part of me does want to see the rams develop some players.
that’s part of what mcvay was supposed to bring. his ability to relate and teach.
so yeah. there kinda is no fun in bringing in already established stars. then mcvay just becomes manager of egos.
but tight end i think is a weak spot. maybe they draft a guy like ian thomas. but he’s very raw. talented but raw.

Todd Gurley says it would be ‘awesome’ if the Rams were to add Odell Beckham Jr.
By GARY KLEIN
MAR 29, 2018 | 11:00 PMThe reigning NFL offensive player of the year played for the league’s highest-scoring team and led the league in touchdowns.
But Rams running back Todd Gurley said Thursday night that there was plenty of room in the offense for more playmakers.
Like receiver Odell Beckham Jr.?
Beckham, the New York Giants star, has been linked to the Rams since news broke this week that the Giants were shopping — or at least testing the market — for a playmaker seeking a mega-extension as he enters the final year of his rookie contract.
Gurley knows Beckham.
“Oh yeah, that’s my guy,” Gurley said at the Sunset Marquis Hotel in West Hollywood, where he took part in an event hosted by Roc Nation, his representation firm.
Like coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead, Gurley appeared wary of saying too much about a player on another team.
But when told that McVay spoke this week about how Beckham, hypothetically, might fit into a high-powered offense that features Gurley and quarterback Jared Goff, Gurley agreed with McVay’s assessment that there are always enough snaps to keep everyone happy.
“There’s always enough snaps,” Gurley, speaking hypothetically, said with a broad grin. “There’s always enough snaps.
“If we had him, man, it would be awesome. I’d be happy, Goff will be happy, coach McVay will be happy, [owner Stan] Kroenke, the whole team would be.”
The New York Daily News, citing an unnamed source, reported this week that Beckham had told “a couple” of Rams players that he “wants in.”
Asked whether Beckham has expressed interest to him about coming to L.A., Gurley smiled.
“Hmm, I don’t want to say all that,” he said. “That’s my boy.”
Gurley then joined Lakers rookie Josh Hart and musical artist Normani in the “Off Script CEO Connect” event, which gave the trio an opportunity to introduce themselves to brand executives.
Gurley has endorsement deals with Nike and Gatorade among others.
“He knows what it takes to be great on the field and he’s also matured and hit his stride,” Michael Yormark, Roc Nation’s president and chief of branding and strategy, said of Gurley, adding, “He understands the landscape and he understands what the expectations are, and he probably also has a better feel for what he wants to become on the field and off the field.”
The hotel where the event was held is located less than three miles from the Hollywood Boulevard location where Gurley participated in a photo shoot for an NFL sportswear advertising campaign two years ago.
At the time, Gurley was coming off a 2015 season that earned him the NFL offensive rookie of the year award. His profile was expected to grow with the Rams’ return to Los Angeles from St. Louis.
But Gurley struggled in 2016.
The Rams fired coach Jeff Fisher with three games left in the season, finished 4-12 and ranked as the league’s worst offense for the second year in a row.
The hiring of the offense-minded McVay changed everything.
Tackle Andrew Whit-worth and center John Sullivan solidified the offensive line. Goff developed into a top-10 passer. Receivers Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp and Sammy Watkins were reliable targets.
And Gurley reemerged with one of the most productive seasons in Rams history.
He rushed for 1,305 yards and 13 touchdowns and caught a team-best 64 passes for 788 yards and six touchdowns.
The Rams won the NFC West but lost to Atlanta in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
They appear poised to take the next step after recently adding Pro Bowl cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
“I love it, man,” Gurley said of his new teammates. “That’s like motivation for everybody.
“Since they’ve been signing, I’m like starting to work out twice a day because it’s a good opportunity this year.
“It looks great on paper but it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t get anything done during the season.”

InvaderRamModeratorpeople talking about trading 2 first round picks. and i’m hearing this on the downtown rams podcast. i don’t know how to post it. they’re overlooking one thing. how in the hell do you replace whitworth?
then you gotta hope that whitworth is the next bruce matthews.
InvaderRamModeratorI dunno about the Oline or the Passing game.
thinking more and more rams need to draft a left tackle at 23. really want a guy like landry, but left tackle would be the smart move.
InvaderRamModeratorPasser rating when kept clean in the pocket is one of the most stable numbers you can find, potentially predictive because of it.
what was goff’s?
