on the downtown rams podcast jake made a good point. and i think this has been mentioned on this message board numerous times but his experiences at cal helped him in ways bradford could not prepare for. that is facing intense pressure from snap to snap. in some of those videos you see goff making throws with traffic in his face but his body language is so calm. i remember bradford back in the day looking a little panicked because he didn’t have the huge pockets that he enjoyed in oklahoma.

that goes along with what pa just wrote. he reminds me too of warner the way he stands in there.

also. despite him looking rusty. he still finished yesterday throwing for 75% accuracy and he could easily have had 2 more touchdowns. he hasn’t peaked yet but that’s a good thing. as long as he’s playing his best football at the end of the season that’s all that matters.

    Scott Hanson@ScottHanson
Derek Carr is 22 of 23 passing.
    95.7% completion percentage.

That would be the single game record for any QB since 1950

ended up 29-32. that says something about the rams defense too.

season’s barely started. but things are beginning to take shape.

    3rd in total defense

But are they Vikings good. Eagles good. Bucs good. Etc.

it’s way too early. i know.

but the rams are currently ranked

    #1 in points allowed.

    #5 in points scored.

    #1 in point differential.

but again they’ve played 2 weak teams. but they’ve also dealt with them about as well as one could expect. so they’re doing what they’re supposed to be doing at this point. we’ll find out if they have another gear in them still.

offense did well. goff was sharp. or at least sharper than the week before.

    defense pitched a shutout.

and yet. i think they can play better. much better.

that’s a little weird to say. but i think it’s true. they haven’t played particularly strong teams. and when they go up against teams like the vikings, they will have to play a lot better than they have…

    but i think they will.

i always liked him too. but i think it was the right move….

    i think.

is he playing in a 4-3 defense? maybe some of it was just scheme fit.

I was pleasantly surprised by the linebackers–especially Corey Littleton. Very nice game.

    yes. very active.

ebukam flashed too. fast and physical. hopefully, he keeps improving.

but littleton was everywhere it seemed like.

Your highest graded #LARams in week one of the 2017 season (still w/ team):

    Lamarcus Joyner – 96.2
    Michael Brockers – 89.6
    Jared Goff – 86.6

wait. is that the 2017 season???

The official winner won’t be announced until tonight on NFL Network but at the end of his segment he said it would be the Rams and couldn’t stop praising Roger Saffold, Whit, and Havenstein who may have taken a step up this year

things would have been much different with mack on their team. but hey. still impressive.

mcvay does a nice job of adapting to his personnel. he doesn’t have tight ends. but he does have a helluva third receiver in kupp and a helluva running back in gurley. so those two positions are getting emphasized over tight ends.

but i do think eventually mcvay will want to draft a legit tight end prospect. or maybe everett can be that guy. i noticed he played a little bit in the game.

Tonight’s Monday Night Football game between Rams and Raiders will feature an in-game mic worn by Rams LT Andrew Whitworth. Should make for some insightful audio.

    ==

i just wanna say that the in-game mic feature might be the worst thing i’ve ever seen. ok. that’s a bit extreme. but they are boring.

ya know i was gonna mention that. his footwork on that play was good.

but i definitely think he looked rusty. although he did have moments.

    i’m encouraged.

On NFL Live just now…Schefter said Rams were very serious about trading for Mack after Donald was signed and that they had a plan to pay him for this year and then trade him at end of the year to get the picks back. Would have been a hellava one year rental…can you imagine Donald, Mack, Suh and Brock on the same line???

interesting. makes sense. rams could never afford the two most expensive contracts in nfl history for a defensive player. and then pay goff.

    ….

they should trade for von miller…………

I’ll mainly watch the Vikings/Niners but will also keep an eye on the Giants/Jags to see how Saquon Barkley does in his debut.

in the clips that i’ve seen, man, he looks explosive and quick and strong. might be the best back in the league already!

mmm… i don’t know. i think rams players. or at least the leaders on this team were pretty vocal in general about donald getting extended and coming back. shoot. mcvay was vocal about donald getting extended.

i mean if anyone deserves an extension on this team. you gotta think it’d be donald. a true franchise player in every sense of the word. i think the only way he could be more valuable is if he threw the ball.

anyway. you don’t get rid of a player like him.

Pastoors: That cleared some space. And then, the other thing to give us a little bit of breathing room … was going to the guy with the longest contract in the building, [punter] Johnny Hekker. He’s a captain for a reason. Just a call to his agent, “Hey I think we might be in a position where we might need to create some cap space. Would Johnny be willing to work with us and convert salary to signing bonus?” He said, “I’ll call Johnny, but I think we both know the answer to this if that helps you guys.”

just a kind of random question. is there any downside to converting salary to signing bonus? does he really need to be congratulated on that?

I don’t see ILB as FOR SURE mediocre, it’s more like unknown I think (ie. with Barron out).

    yeah. we just don’t know.

although with ramik we kinda know. not that he’s bad. he does have 17 games starting experience in three years. not too bad. i think he should be solid. that’s about the best we can expect.

but littleton is the unknown which is both exciting and terrifying. ogletree was good but was also inconsistent. i liked him and kept wishing he’d get over a hump. but it never happened. so i wasn’t devastated when he was traded. on the other hand, littleton could end up being much worse than ogletree was. and that would suck. i can only hope that littleton makes a fletcher like emergence. that’d be best case scenario. but then he never was able to beat out ogletree when he was here, so can we really expect him to be better than ogletree? then again. ogletree had just signed an extension. so were they really going to bench a guy they just signed to a multi-million dollar extension? i guess we’ll see.

best case scenario? this barron injury opens up an avenue for micah kiser with kiser manning the middle and littleton sliding over to barron’s spot.

    ….

just let me dream a little anyway.

So that’s the Candy Mountain, homer high on crack take.

it’s hard not to get ahead of ourselves.

but yeah. this is why i think the 2018 draft will be so important for snead’s legacy. and really not just this draft. but future drafts as well.

but i kind of see this class as the beginning of a second chapter to snead’s career.

he did a great job building this team.

but now comes the hard part. assuming they’re successful, there’s no more high draft picks. no more cheap contracts on blue chip talent.

but i’m encouraged so far. there’s a lot of talk about mcvay right now. and rightly so. but snead is as important. and i might even argue more important. than mcvay.

look at the lakers for example. throughout all those years of sustained success. although there were some dips for sure. the one constant was jerry west. a supreme team builder. now i’m not saying snead is at that level. but i’m curious to see how his career develops over the next 10 years.

and starting with 2018 moving forward. this is where he has a chance to really cement his legacy. i’m sure he knows it. and he’s made some real bold moves. not just with drafting. but with the various trades he’s made. and like you said finding castoffs who can fill in the cracks.

just a lot of storylines to follow. hope they work out.

the important thing is that the rams will need to draft well in order to sustain success. gonna need some cheap but talented players.

    stating the obvious i know.

thinking into the future. i imagine an oline in a couple years looking like this.

    joseph noteboom – left tackle

rodger saffold – left guard (i get the sense that his family really enjoys the southern california lifestyle. i think he does whatever he can on his side to remain with the rams. especially if they keep winning.)

    brian allen – center

    jamil demby – right guard

    rob havenstein – right tackle

now this is all very unlikely. but if it did. and noteboom, allen, and demby all become starters. that would be insane right? that would make this draft a bonafide masterpiece for snead. wouldn’t it? for that reason alone i think it’s most likely not going to happen.

but if it did… that would be a big part of snead’s legacy as rams gm. you gotta think….

i am most curious to see samson ebukam. i think he was solid in the preseason. not spectacular. but now he gets to play behind donald, suh, and brockers.

athletically this guy is a beast. i’ve talked about this before, but as excited as everyone was to read about the rams aggressively pursuing mack, the rams have a guy with lots of potential already in samson. mack i think is probably the more fluid athlete. but ebukam has a slight edge in terms of pure explosion. and this guy is about as explosive as they come. you’d be hard pressed to find someone his size with more explosion. at least on paper. and the rams i’m sure were playing vanilla packages in the preseason. i imagine. and especially now with donald back and a true starting front seven surrounding ebukam. that sonofbum has designed a bunch of ways to let ebukam loose.

seriously guys. this guy is an uber athlete. of course that doesn’t guarantee success. but if any dcoordinator can tap into that immense talent it’s gotta be sonofbum.

beyond that. i’m excited to see this secondary – particularly marcus peters and john johnson. i think we know what we’ll get with the rest of the secondary. but these two have the most untapped potential.

and again. it’s obviously an exciting prospect seeing donald and suh play next to each other, but i don’t think we should be too surprised by what we’ll see. of course i don’t think a lot of us will have seen anything like it. maybe except for the older generation who saw deacon and merlin lining up next to each other. but me? i haven’t seen that in my lifetime. and i probably will never see anything like it again for my entire existence as a rams fan. so i gotta savor it… assuming it goes the way i think it will.

i can’t wait any longer. it’s just all i think about at the moment.
