InvaderRamModeratorQBs don’t win comebacks by themselves (ever) but they HAVE TO come through for them to work.
it never happens all at once. and it’s probably not accurate to point to one game or another as a turning point.
but i think goff showed me something this game. it wasn’t the best or most dramatic comeback i’ve ever seen. maybe a touchdown would have been the exclamation point i was looking for.
but dang. like it’s been said. on the road against a divisional opponent with an insanely loud crowd. against a superbowl winning hof caliber qb who kept coming up with big plays. and goff came through. without cooks and kupp. knowing he needed to score because the defense kept giving up points.
and no. it wasn’t just him. incredible play by the oline. blowing up holes and keeping goff clean. gurley was gutsy. and let me be frank. i saw the replay. and he got the first down. it never should have gotten to that fourth down qb sneak. but the rams couldn’t challenge it because they had no timeouts. so i fault the coaching staff for that. it could have really bit them in the ass.
goff became more of a leader in this game i think. his teammates already believed in him. but it’s wins like these which really galvanize that belief. so calm and collected when the game was on the line. but you saw that competitiveness boil over at the end when he converted. it was good to see.
as for the defense. the rams are getting pressure from suh and donald. but in my opinion. they need someone else who can finish off plays besides those two. they can’t do it by themselves. at this point. i seriously hope peters gets over his injury. talib comes back in the last half of the season. and that ogbo can contribute just something. even as a situational pass rusher. just something please.
but more than that. the run defense was worse. i don’t know how they fix it. but they gotta fix it. 190 yards on almost 6 ypc. not acceptable. i’m officially worried.

InvaderRamModerator16 points in the second half on the road. crowd was loud. without two of your three best wrs.
impressive. goff was 23/32 for 321 yards. 71.9% completion and 10.0 ypa. not bad. his second int was at the end of the second half. hard to fault him, but it was a really bad 2 minute drill.
woods stepped up in the second half. reynolds and hodge made some plays.
defense was bad. littleton kept making plays though. i like that guy.
gutsy call at the end. goff was pumped.
InvaderRamModeratorReturn of Obo also looms.

InvaderRamModeratorDon’t forget Ja’Von Rolland-Jones.
i saw that. i don’t know. i had my hopes a little bit up looking at his college production. but he tested very poorly. very slow (timed 5.0 seconds in the 40). not explosive. not agile. lacks great length.
my hopes for ogbo are not great. probably less so with rolland-jones.
maybe franklin-myers starts picking it up more and more???
InvaderRamModeratorThis defense looks like it could use Quinn’s speed on the edge.
But Quinn only has 1 sack through 4 games. And he has 0 forced fumbles. I’d guess he’s still not close to the same player he was pre-back surgery.
probably never will be but still far better than what they have right now.
there is still ogbo… but i’m not gonna get my hopes up.
InvaderRamModeratorhmmm… well…
it’ll be interesting to look back a year from now. even 2-3 years from now and look at the impact of those trades.
InvaderRamModeratorRobert Quinn the top rusher. It’s too bad the Rams couldn’t hang onto him.
so the cap space that was cleared by cutting quinn. who was that used on?
InvaderRamModerator“Best quarterback performance I’ve seen in my seven years in the league in person.”@KirkCousins8 to @JaredGoff16 after Goff’s 465 yards and 5 TD on #TNF @nflnetwork.
11:20 AM – Oct 5, 2018
that’s awesome. hopefully he’s not the last qb to say that.

InvaderRamModeratori won’t be too bothered if the rest of the nfc west sucks for the next decade.
InvaderRamModeratori’m not too bothered by it.
although i wonder how he’d do in the mcvay offense.
InvaderRamModeratorA number of those teams near the top, on that list are not having good years defensively. I dunno what that means.
at some point you actually have to get to the quarterback.
someone correct me if i’m wrong but opposing qbs have been torching the rams even when throwing under pressure. so something’s not working.
part of it is just facing some really good qbs lately. and injuries.
but maybe it’ll balance out. maybe the defensive backs and linebackers will start making some more plays with the opposing qbs playing under such duress. i don’t know.
InvaderRamModeratorBut, seriously, I’m not a fan of tackling with intent to injure. That’s just stupid, imo.
i get that. but i think there are ways of giving advantages to the defense without allowing them to tackle with intent to injure.
allowing defensive backs more contact with the receiver before they catch the ball. allowing offensive linemen less leeway on holding calls.
but the league doesn’t want that. they just want more touchdowns. i like to watch a great defense as much as a great offense any day.
InvaderRamModeratorgoff mcvay partnership. rams cannot let these 2 go.
fisher was right. the head coach qb relationship is so important.
InvaderRamModeratorwhat has me impressed too is the ypa.
his intermediate passing is beautiful to watch.
InvaderRamModeratorA key one is his innate ability to make “wow” passes into tight spaces–passes with a lot of finesse and touch and micro-accuracy in terms of where the ball ends up, but at the same time they’re high velocity throws. It;s like he can throw a line drive with touch at the end.
yeah. he’s a precision qb with some arm strength. and i think he can get even a little bit stronger.
InvaderRamModeratori gotta say i am just baffled how far he’s come.
when he was drafted, i was a wentz guy. i just thought he fit a fisher team more than goff did. maybe i’m completely off base, but fisher wins more by toughness and grit than precision and brains. and i thought that was more in wentz’s wheelhouse.
but damn if goff isn’t the perfect fit for mcvay. not only is he precise and accurate. but he’s got some balls on him with some of those throws he makes. and sometimes it doesn’t work out like with that throw to everett. but so far. more often than not. it works to spectacular success.
and when he makes the rare mistake, he seemingly just shrugs it off and goes right back at it. and again. that’s a reflection of his attitude which borders on arrogance. just the guts to place balls where most qbs would think twice about. i mean can you see a fisher offense doing that? sure he’d take shots downfield, but not like this rams offense is doing. mcvay puts goff and the offense in position to exploit holes and mismatches in the opposing defense, and goff goes for the freaking jugular. it’s been amazing to watch. and who knows if they can even keep it up.
like i said goff started out hot last year and tapered off during the middle portion of the season before picking it back up. but he seems different this season so far. more confident. stronger. this should be a tough but interesting 8 game stretch before getting to the last quarter of the season.
InvaderRamModeratoryeah. and the sacks should start coming. but i wonder how many of those pressures were coming from the edge.
i feel like ebukam has been a disappointment. i think he gives good effort. but he hasn’t even produced many pressures much less sacks. it’s all coming up the middle. which says a lot about donald and suh.
i was intrigued by suh lining up outside. i wonder how that experiment works out. but mostly i’d like to see the outside linebackers step it up.

InvaderRamModeratori would also add that havenstein is the sixth rated tackle according to pff.
i don’t know if that’s just among right tackles or all tackles but impressive either way.
InvaderRamModeratorFrustrating. I can see making it a little safer, but seeing these roughing the passer penalties, is just sad, and I agree with you on illegal contact calls. Five yards down the field. My @$$. Tired of this defenseless WR crap as well.
well giving defenses an advantage without putting ball carriers at risk would seem like a fair move. allowing more contact before the wide receiver catches the ball doesn’t leave them exposed to big hits, but at the same time, it makes it easier for defenders to cover receivers.
likewise putting more emphasis on making it harder for offensive lineman to block defensive lineman while keeping the roughing the passer penalties intact would give the dlinemen more of an advantage without putting the qb at risk to big hits.
i don’t know. i know the league wants more offense. but i’m just proposing an alternative that makes the game safer yet gives the defense some advantages.
InvaderRamModeratorI can’t see how Ogbo is going to matter this year. He is a rookie who missed all of camp.
i wouldn’t expect him to start. but if he could even just contribute in passing downs, that’d be a success. it’s not like he’s got much competition in front of him.
InvaderRamModeratorwell 10th isn’t bad. but it isn’t great either.
i’d expect teams to start blitzing more. i’ll be interested to see how goff reacts if they do.
InvaderRamModeratorfootball outsiders has him ranked #1 according to their metrics.
https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb
also espn’s total qbr has him rated #2 behind mahomes.
InvaderRamModeratori can only hope that barron coming back for the defense is a good thing. then hopefully ogbo is on his way back.
InvaderRamModeratorjust checked pff. he is now the number one rated qb according to their metrics.
InvaderRamModeratoreven tweaking rules making it harder for offensive linemen to block defensive linemen.
protect the qb so they can stay healthy. but make it easier for defensive backs to cover and defensive linemen to sack qbs LEGALLY.
to me at least. it would be a more exciting game.
InvaderRamModeratorif i’m not mistaken. after this game goff will become the nfl leader in passer rating at the quarter mark.
InvaderRamModeratori feel bad for earl thomas. i really do. but i hope the rams stomp the seahawks next week.
InvaderRamModeratorRich Eisen@richeisen
And Earl Thomas is down and getting carted off with a cast. Exactly why he wanted to get paid. And why no one — NO ONE — should criticize a player wanting to get his when he can.exactly. sticks in my craw when people criticize players for holding out.
InvaderRamModeratoryeah. his accuracy is next level.
not only can he hit the receiver in stride. he can hit the receiver in stride where only the receiver can make a play on the ball. he can hit the target within the target.
combine that accuracy with his footwork. and his toughness which he’s displayed since his days at cal.
and he seemingly has this desire to continually get better. he’s beginning to learn the playbook inside and out. to the point that he’s just seeing and reacting instead of thinking. but he seems thirsty for even more. i want to see that manning-like obsessiveness over football. i see signs of it, but it’s still too early to tell.
and he’s only 23 years old. will turn 24 in october. he can get stronger. my guess is he won’t physically reach his peak until 2020. some guys develop later physically. and he must be one of those guys.
i gotta say. i’m surprised. i didn’t think he’d be this good. and who knows? maybe he comes back to earth a little as the season goes on. but shoot. at his stage of development (and coming from that college offense at cal) it’s a little startling that he’s developed this fast. and you wonder how high his ceiling actually is. the more and more he sees as he keeps playing, he will sharpen his skills that much more. it’s only his second season in the same system. he’s seemingly learned so much more about this offense in one offseason. how much more can he absorb in another offseason after having gone through another season of getting live action reps?
should be interesting.
InvaderRamModeratorDeal?
aaron donald is back to being rated the number one dlineman according to pff.
next up is seattle. and you know he loves playing seattle! i hope he goes off!
i keep saying it. but i think donald is the one true transcendent player on this rams team. there are some other candidates. but i feel like this guy has already proven it to be true in the short time he’s played. he’s that good. i don’t know if i’ve seen a dlineman with his combination of strength, speed, and explosion. and it’s not just strength. like his legs are strong. or his chest. or his arms. and he is strong in those areas. but even his fingers are strong. insanely strong. if he gets his hands on you it’s over. you’re done. easily the best dlineman i’ve seen on the rams. but my fandom only goes back to 95.
but that’s also the reason why i want to see the defense do so well. moreso than the offense. it’s not just enough. for me at least. for donald to be merely a great player on a great team. i want donald to be on a great team with a great defense. or he could be like a reggie white. a team known for its offense with him being a singular larger than life figure on defense. but really. i want him to be on a defense that people write about decades from now.
anyway. i’m rambling…
