Anyone think Bud Sasser could end up being good? Similar height and 40 time to Brian Quick. I literally know nothing else about him.

Oh, we ALL like that idea, wv.

We are all in LOVE with that idea.

The thing is…as the honorable delegate from New Vermontavania has stated…many of us are not 100% confident that that is what the Rams have.

    That’s all.

    Exactly.

For all we know, the Rams have received an infusion of Mike Schads, Alex Barrons and Justin Smiths.

I don’t think that’s what the Rams got. I like their draft and the o-linemen they picked up.

But then again, when they drafted Justin Smith I didn’t think his name would eventually be used as a pejorative as it was just two sentences ago, either.

Also, there’s the issue of how long will it take for them to develop.

Anyway. Fisher’s statement is both kind of true…and kind of a disingenuous spin. They made do with what they could get, but then also kept that as a policy (acquire vets not rookies) until 2014.

Yeah, I agree. Very disingenuous. If you build your team from the inside out, than it doesn’t matter how many other holes there are, you address that first, otherwise, it’s not inside out, is it?

EARTH CITY, Mo. — As the St. Louis Rams prepare to officially open organized team activities Tuesday, they do so knowing exactly what they have coming back on defense.

    I don’t. Know, that is.

I mean, I know what our talent level is. I know what the bunch can do at their best.

But, as Wagoner’s piece makes clear, that defense last year was profoundly erratic. You never knew, week to week, what defense you’d be seeing. As, indeed, the NYG game proved.

To me, it all comes down to one variable: Williams’ ego.

If he realizes he has a pass rush built in and plays to stress QBs’ reads rather than to prove how creative his blitzes are, we’ll be damn good.

But I don’t really trust him to do that. At least not consistently. Our Defense really should be good. But it could be elite and it could be top half. And it could win games or piss them away by yielding soft yards and points.

“It’s not a young team any more,” Laurinaitis said. “It might be young still by age, but there’s a lot of experience out there, a lot of guys that have played a lot of minutes. And so the expectations are going to be extremely high.”

    He got that right.

Anyone talking about us being a “young team” this year should be horsewhipped. Except for the OL.

There is no excuse for the defense not to be Top Ten and threatening the Top 5. It’s on Williams to recognize the strength of the unit, play to that strength, and break offenses with it. If he can’t get it done, he’ll need to go.

And of course it’s up to Fisher to make all this clear to Williams.

I am not optimistic about what Williams will do with a superb D front that last year he showed he didn’t know how to use.

The Rams blitzed 45% last year. First in the NFL.
As opposed to the Seahawks who blitzed 23 %

We have a better defensive line than the seahawks.

McDonald’s Pro Football Focus rating through Week 8, the Kansas City game, was -11.3, which ranked him 82nd out of 83 safeties in the NFL

Since Week 9, when the Rams beat the 49ers 13-10, McDonald’s PFF rating is +15.0, by far the best among NFL safeties. He ranks at or near the top of nearly every category, including run defense, pass defense and quarterback rating given up, which is down to a stingy 70.1 over that six-game span.

    That;s really pretty interesting.

Yeah, I hadn’t realized that. To go from the worst rated to the best rated…..that is something special. There’s no reason not to expect him to do it all year this year.

    Robinson
Saffold (healthy saffold is already there at guard)
    Donald (already there)
    Quinn (already there)
    Ogletree
Gurley (completely unproven and still injured, but he is SUPPOSE to become elite)
    Quick
Wichman is my surprise pick. (Because Mack said he was going to be good)

What is shocking is that looking at just 2014, BOTH Hill and Davis had a higher accuracy percentage on attempts of 20 yards or more than Foles did.

    This makes me seriously nauseaus.

IF the defense turns out to be what it should….and we can steal half the games during the first six games. Start out something like 3-3. Than I like our chances to win ten+ games and be playoff bound. I am optimistic b/c the defense SHOULD be that good. If not, it’s on Williams.

I believe that gives the young offensive lineman and Gurley enough time to get up to speed and start rocking and rolling.

I am optimistic….but the defense will really have to do the heavy lifting at first.

I thought Greg Williams was going to be smarter. I thought he would continue to the Rams defensive strengths and slowly implement his changes.

I also thought Stacy was going to be a BEAST.

I thought Ogletree was going to be a pro-bowl linebacker

    I don’t like this game

    Herzog

    And three rookies?

Well to be annoyingly exact, it’s not 3 rookies. The center will be Barnes, Jones, or Rhaney, none of whom of course are rookies.

AND this team likes its placeholders. They have several candidates to hold down the guard spot until Brown is ready. Or, ready-er. That’s anyone from Washinton to Bond to Reynolds to Unknown Player to be Named Later. I mean think of who they have used at guard so far since 2012—Turner, Smith, Williams. Is there someone on the roster at least as good as them? Could be, sure.

Now granted I did not just describe the 70s or 80s Rams OL.

But it is at least better than “3 rookies.”

    Technically. OK.

    But they are redshirted, basically.

If Barnes starts, it’s a bad sign, and if it’s Jones or Rhaney, it’s a rookie. Basically.

    At center, no less.

    I wish I didn’t agree with you, but I do 100%.

I’m feeling like the Rams are taking another mulligan year, frankly.
    Let’s go 2016.

    No way, dude.

I like the idea of a young, healthy, mauling, ornery OLine.

I like this team. Playoffs, this year.

Maybe even a Home playoff game. In St.Louis. O dear.

Just 2-3 blown blocking assignments per game, and the Rams lose. How many times over the past couple of years have we said, “The Rams were in it until ______.”

It’s too many greenhorns. Saffold is the only vet. Robinson won’t be the main problem, but he’s still going to lose battles that he will win in another year. And three rookies?

They will probably rush the ball just fine. Maulers, as you say.

And it just takes on blown assigment to get your quarterback hurt.

This is all going to be very interesting when it gets to the finish line.

It’s musical chairs and someone is not getting a chair.

The team that “feels” like the odd team out is Oakland. Maybe that’s just because they’ve been the quietest team during all this. There is no doubt that the Chargers and Rams are full speed ahead toward L.A. but because their moves involve two different stadiums, something has to give somewhere. At some point the NFL will have to get Spanos and Kroenke and Davis in a room and lock the door and not come out until it’s all sorted out and even then–if things go badly you have to wonder if teams will say “screw it” and do what they want to do anyway.

I still feel, at the end of the day, that somehow it’s going to be the Rams and Chargers but nothing is carved in stone yet.

    We’ll see.

Oakland does feel like the odd team out.

    1. In the survey of the LA market, there was a great deal of interest in the Rams, some in the Chargers, and little for the Raiders. In fact, there was some negative response to the Raiders.

    2. The Raiders are the poorest team. They can’t do anything without help. They can’t build a stadium. How are they going to pay a relocation fee?

    3. The Raiders have the shakiest ownership. I didn’t know this before now, but apparently Davis is going to have to pass through inheritance issues where Chip and Lucia could not. A Raiders sale? Subsidize a team moving to LA when ownership could be uncertain soon?

In contrast, Kroenke is a titan financially, and has an entire complex ready to go, and can afford to pay the NFL a substantial fee, plus provide an entire Super Bowl party venue.

I do not think the Raiders have any control of their destiny. Whatever is going to happen to them in the next decade is going to happen TO them. Davis can say whatever he wants about the Raiders’ destiny. I think their destiny is going to be determined by 31 other owners.

And I’m with WV. I don’t want the Rams to share a stadium.

Well, nobody can force them to move to St. Louis if they don’t want to. Or can they?

I agree, no stadium sharing and no turf. I guess Kroenke would want two teams as this means more profits for him.

It’s a shame, really, because the Rams did need Barksdale, and Barksdale probably would have been fine here with Saffold next to him. But, I can understand the Rams not spending $6M per year on him. Sounds like both sides were waiting to see how the Draft would go … and after the Rams got their RT in the 2nd round, Barksdale had few options. The thing is, this guy wanted to see what the market demanded, and he just wouldn’t accept it. So, sign a 1-year “prove it” deal, and if he comes out looking good, he can make his money next year. Just hope you don’t get injured …

Well I don’t understand it. This shouldn’t have happened.

I have to admit one thing. He was actually amazing when he was in man coverage. Teams caught on to that real quick and he is basically useless otherwise.

Well, I think, I just am not versed in coverages to really understand it all.

He signed the same basic contract that Reynolds signed to be a backup, except Reynolds contract is for 2 years.

I just have this suspicion that Barksdale got his feelings hurt when the Rams didn’t value him as much as he thought they should,

I’m guessing the Rams “interest” in Barksdale post-draft was of the “come-down-to-earth” variety, and whatever they may have offered before was probably withdrawn.

Yeah it looks to me like JB got his feelings hurt, and the Rams got less interested after the draft.

The Rams are not real big on keeping their “ronin” pick-up types. They have let a long list of guys who played for them walk. Turner, Richardson, Hunter, Smith, Williams, Person, and now JB.

A lot of those guys seem to only play well for the Rams. Turner was the one I wish they had kept. He played center better than Wells did for the Rams. I don’t believe he played well after he left.

    He’s a punt returner.

Meanwhile, he used the crap out of Givens as a rookie on deep patterns and it worked.

Why don’t we still use Givens in this capacity. If he’s a one trick pony, let’s use that one trick.

Aaron Donald, ID, St. Louis Rams

What a rookie year! Donald didn’t start until Week 6 but still managed to not only log 724 snaps but also earn the highest grade of any defensive tackle. That was the level of dominance the former Pittsburgh Panther produced. There was a feeling he was too small heading out of college but his ability to penetrate made him more than just a situational player, with him earning marks in run defense comparable to his excellent work pass rushing.

Best Performance: Week 10, SL @ ARZ, +5.7

Key Stat: Finished in the Top 10 in both Run Stop Percentage and Pass Rushing Productivity.

What a great pick that was.

<span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: blue”>What would your depth chart look like? I keep changing the offensive line on mine.</span>

I don’t really know. I’m very interested in what Jeff Fisher thinks. It would be something else if this O-line started a 2nd-year (and raw by 2nd-year standards) LT, a rookie LG, a raw oft-injured third-year center starting for the first time, and a rookie RT. Wow. Think about that. Then, add in Saffold, the only veteran, who is always good for losing several games to injury.

Makes me a little queasy, to be honest.

Makes me very queasy. I’m wondering if this is just the Jeff Fisher way.
