Maybe the most fascinating thing about the human experience is that we have so much capability for imagination and ingenuity. And, yet, as a species, we are so scared of change. Maybe I can understand that fear of change in the context of what’s happening right now. It seems that the global-corporate-borg has co-opted the human spirit for its own gain — addressing only the dreaded bottom line on the ledger. When we strive forward and create change only with dollar signs in mind, what room is there to consider what’s good for humanity in toto? What good are humans if they’re not filling a job? Think about your worth right now. If you don’t own a business, or you don’t have a job (or a good job), you’re not as important. That’s just the way it is.

I think I should start a megachurch. Because, those preachers, they make a lot of money, and we all know that bots don’t have souls, so that can’t take over for a Man of the Lord. I guess the problem is, you’d be competing with other preachers for the dwindling dollars from the poor souls who need saving.

That’s cool. Glad he’s helping people.

The older I get, the more I understand why these football players walk away from the money. I’m nursing health issues and never played a day of organized football. I can only imagine what toll this game takes on these guys.

    Thanks, fellas.

I like a lot about the house, really. It has kind of a vacation home type of feel. In fact, a cousin said it felt like a resort home. There’s a lot of woodwork in the family room that makes it feel a little like a lodge. And, there is a lot of entertaining space both inside and out, especially with the huge deck. Now, I’ve got the pool crystal clear, too … just in time to close it up. I’ve never had a fireplace, but my wife grew up with one and says it will be awesome in the winter. I really love that I could also get a nice grill that I will use a lot right off the family room on the deck. And, I haven’t even explored how we’ll put together the bar area in the basement.

wv, here’s an answer to your question about why Cosby admitted to his intentions to give quaaludes to women he intended to have sex with.

Was just talking about this with my son (he’s 23).

How does one process arguably the greatest comedy album of all time and the foundation for many of the greatest comedians of today (the storytellers as opposed to the joke tellers that came from the vaudeville tradition) with what we know about Cosby now?

Bill Cosby: Himself is arguably the greatest comedy album and comedy concert of all time. And I include Richard Pryor’s Live on the Sunset Strip on that list.

Pryor was good. Amazing, but Cosby at that time was the greatest ever. And if none of this had happened, I have no doubt that he’d have to be on the Mt. Rushmore of comedians.

Now? I dunno. How do we process this now?

Do we deal with it like the Hall of Fame? I mean, we haven’t yanked Ty Cobb out and he was a horrible human being in a lot of ways, and I mean horrible.

I’m really just asking the question because I don’t have an answer… and I don’t presume that there is any one answer. It may just be different for each person.

Pretty easy for me to process it, because I never really was a fan of his comedy. I’m probably in the minority; but truthfully, I never thought he was funny. Just never did it for me.

I wasn’t a huge fan, either. I always thought he was a blowhard, so I didn’t like his public persona, either.

There’s a bit on one of Cosby’s albums where he talks about drugging women with “spanish fly.” Shit you not:

I can’t wrap my head around the act itself. I mean…I just can’t imagine thinking that drugging someone to make her unable to resist sex is a good idea. It is just not something I can conceive of doing. First of all, the sheer demeaning violence of the thing stuns me, but I also can’t see how it would even be satisfying to have sex with someone who is passed out. I couldn’t bring myself to do it even if we were headed that direction and she was consensual, and totally passed out all by herself with booze, or something. Even if she was my girlfriend. I just can’t wrap my head around it at all.

And I would have thought that sex would come pretty easily for a celebrity anyway. So I don’t understand that part of it, either.

Lots of different things turn on lots of different people. This was Cosby’s thing, according to nearly 50 women, so far. One woman who willingly had sex with him said that Cosby drugged her for the sole purpose of raping her while she was passed out. That’s insightful: He did it because it was a turn-on. His thing is raping a defenseless woman. And, he became best friends with Hugh Hefner, so he could go from Playboy Bunny club to club and take advantage of these women who had no chance of winning a he said, she said battle … and in fact were told not to even try to go after Hef’s best bud. He was also on Temple University’s board, and had access to young college women in that role. He had lots of ways of getting to women, and he used his clout to introduce himself to them, get them in a situation where he could drug them and rape them, and then knew he could get away with denying it.

He’s the worst kind of creep. He probably said what he did in that deposition because he was sure he could get away with it, and he did. His lawyer stopped him from saying anymore.

Well, I would do that for Bud Sasser in a heartbeat because I’m wired that way. If I had that kind of money – (I bet SK makes more money every DAY than what they paid Sasser) – I would absolutely do that for a kid who somehow came into my life like that.

But…because of that….I’d never ever ever become a multi-billionaire in the first place.

And it isn’t like Sasser is a fan favorite. He’s a local kid, I guess. Will the Rams sell $200k more in tickets this year because of this? I doubt it.

    I feel the same.

I don’t get the idea this was a P.R. move. They’re not gaining any points with this. It was just the right thing to do, morally, they did it, and I appreciate that. Now, if SK and other gazillionaires did the same thing in business, thinking of how they could help others, well, they wouldn’t be gazillionaires, but we’d all be better off.

    Elite:

    Donald (already there)
    Quinn (ditto)
Saffold at guard (if healthy, he’s there)
    Gurley (he better be)
McDonald (I think they hit on this guy, and he’s going to keep getting better)
Hekker (maybe the best in the game)

Second tier that needs to show more:

Robinson (all potential right now, has to show he can polish his technique)
Ogletree (too inconsistent/not enough big plays)
Brockers (he’s had two years where injuries limited him, but if he can stay healthy …)
    Zuerlein (needs more consistency)

Long shot but ya never know:

Jenkins (too inconsistent/too many big plays against him)
Tavon Austin (the light bulb will have to come on soon, and he has to prove he can stay on the field)
Bailey (I really think he could blossom into an elite possession receiver)
McLeod (he’s improved a lot so far)
E.J. Gaines (I think he’ll be a solid corner for years, but I doubt elite)

Well, the plus is that Donald will contribute immediately and therefore have a full year of wreaking havoc on offensive lines. But, teams may pay more attention to him, and if that’s the case, than Brockers and Fairley should benefit.

I still can’t believe that Sam wasn’t good enough to get more opportunities in the NFL. It’s probably best that he gets a chance to play every week in the CFL. If he does well, he should get another NFL offer.

I’m not comfortable with it. Rather have a veteran at RT. But, yes, both could come into their own this year. I just have lots of doubts that the Rams will be successful on the interior AND outside … too many variables heading into this season.

I can see a scenario where Stan tries to poach Stanos and make him more more a partner in the Inglewood deal, leaving Oakland out to dry.

If I were the Raiders’ owner, I’d make it sound like St. Louis was an intriguing option, because if they lose the L.A. market, they’re going to need more options to force a deal in Oakland.

It’s a shame, really, because the Rams did need Barksdale, and Barksdale probably would have been fine here with Saffold next to him. But, I can understand the Rams not spending $6M per year on him. Sounds like both sides were waiting to see how the Draft would go … and after the Rams got their RT in the 2nd round, Barksdale had few options. The thing is, this guy wanted to see what the market demanded, and he just wouldn’t accept it. So, sign a 1-year “prove it” deal, and if he comes out looking good, he can make his money next year. Just hope you don’t get injured …

    Dak
    Participant

Sounds to me like a combination of Barksdale overvaluing his worth and then getting sideways with the Rams for not valuing him enough. He signed a one-year “prove it” deal and thinks he can cash in next year.

If I was him, I’d get a new agent by next year.

    Dak

I just have this suspicion that Barksdale got his feelings hurt when the Rams didn’t value him as much as he thought they should, and I just had the feeling he was never going to sign here after that happened.

Austin will never be as good as I hoped, I fear, because of a number of factors. He has shown that he cannot bounce off a hit or even break an arm tackle. He’s too easy to bring down once contacted. He isn’t as instinctive a football player as I hoped. It takes him time to understand the offense and his role, and it’s taken him too long to adjust to the speed of the NFL. The injuries have hurt his progress, too. I don’t know if he’s “injury prone” but I underestimated how much his small stature may lead to injuries. That has nothing to do with his height, but his build and strength. Where his size does hurt is that he’s so small on the outside that most QBs are going to have a hard time seeing him and dropping the ball to him between the safety and the corner. They’re not going to try to throw high to him along the sideline.

Yet, despite all of that, he’s made some amazing plays. Just not consistently enough. I also think he’s done a good job running the ball out of the backfield, much better than I ever anticipated. He’s just more of a situational type of guy. On a wide open offense, he’d be hell to cover, but I do agree with RFL to an extent that he doesn’t really fit with this offense … not enough to justify what they gave up for him. You don’t take the type of player that we collectively described here in the Top 10, and you sure don’t trade up for him. I was excited to get him, and surprised when the Rams traded up for him. But, I think the Rams missed the boat on what he could be on this team. I’m sure they thought he could make a major impact immediately. Now, you have to game plan just to try to get him involved. This is definitely going to be a telling year as to whether Austin can take a step forward. If he doesn’t, I could see this team trading him next offseason.

The big question is IF the Rams will be able to pass successfully when needed, in the 4th quarter, or when coming from behind. I don’t know what Foles IS, exactly. He has no track record of “being clutch” or bringing teams back. And, the Rams’ receivers, while more talented than the past several years, have not established that they can reliably move the chains when needed the most. There are a lot of question marks.

I agree, too, that the Rams should still go after Barksdale, and really I’d be happiest if they also got a veteran center.

I like to spend 5 minutes analyzing things that may or may not be official, and may not mean that much. Cuz I’m mental.

What would your depth chart look like? I keep changing the offensive line on mine

I don’t really know. I’m very interested in what Jeff Fisher thinks. It would be something else if this O-line started a 2nd-year (and raw by 2nd-year standards) LT, a rookie LG, a raw oft-injured third-year center starting for the first time, and a rookie RT. Wow. Think about that. Then, add in Saffold, the only veteran, who is always good for losing several games to injury.

Makes me a little queasy, to be honest.
