Injuries are a problem if they either take out a key player or mess with a unit.

The OL: 2 injuries so far. Saffold and Hav.

On paper anyway that’s not enough to demolish the OL. It could still function like that.

    .

This is like early 1976 all over again.

Robinson blocked one of the quickest DB’s in the league, on one of our TD’s, and he was the one who noticed, communicated, and picked up the blitz, on a the player that was lined up two gaps out side of him. Now, that’s an island.

I didn’t start reading the PD until 2008.I really didn’t pay much attention to him until he started using the straw man approach which I found to be ridiculous. Then he started pandering to all the “loons” over there than that act got old.I really don’t go over there very much because there is too much venom there. And no I don’t them or him.

    Rams43

I finally re watched the Chief game…This game was painful to watch. Very, very painful.

I can only recall 2 highlights. One highlight was the first drive by Davis. It was flawless and very impressive, resulting in a TD.

The other “highlight” was when Hekker went in on a 4th down apparent punt situation. But he came up to take a snap from under C which forced Reid to call a timeout. It made me chuckle to see that.

That was about it as far as highlights for us, though.

We never scored again, allowing 34 unanswered points. Points were scored by the Chiefs in every possible way with the exception of a safety, and they came within less than a yard of accomplishing that, too.

Where to start? BTW, these are just a few observations of lowlights, NOT an attempt to itemize every single Ram mistake or challenge.

We started the game with backups for already injured players and it snowballed from there. For example, 3 rookies had to start at CB. They were Gaines, Joyner, and Roberson. Later, McLeod was hurt and replaced by Cody Davis. Then Davis was hurt and replaced at S by Joyner. I missed exactly which player replaced Joyner at nickel. That’s a lot of injuries forcing the play of 4 out of 5 of our normal secondary players. Not good.

Then there was the OL injury disaster. Saffold was replaced at RG by Joseph in the mid 2nd quarter. Then Long gets hurt, forcing GRob over from LG to LOT and Person to come in at LG. Later, Wells gets hurt and Jones comes in to finish at C for him. That left only Barksdale at his normal position. And, frankly, he hardly distinguished himself at ROT. Houston owned him in this game.

Then there was the season ending Quick injury. Sigh…

Did I mention that we started the game with a former 3rd string QB?

What a nightmare of matchup disadvantages!

Davis looked superb in that opening drive. But as the game progressed he appeared to become increasingly rattled. For example, his deep ball is not his strength but he still threw one deep to a double covered and perfectly bracketed Britt. Naturally, it was intercepted. He was even throwing behind some receivers. Even Bailey couldn’t handle some of them thrown his way.

I stopped counting when the Chiefs got their 6th sack. Plenty of blame to go around to account for that. OL getting dominated, Davis getting rattled, Schotty play calling becoming one sided, you name it…

We couldn’t run inside once Saffold left the game. For example, still early in a game tied 7-7 there was a 3rd and 1 and Stacy hit the middle as he does so well. But both Wells and Joseph missed their danged blocks. BOTH of them. So Stacy gets stuffed and we have to punt. How do two vet, and former Pro Bowlers, both miss their blocks there? Another play I saw Joseph completely whiff on players coming on either side of him. I mean, he never even touched them. It looked like he had closed his eyes at the snap of the ball. I’m serious. Naturally, those 2 Chiefs buried Davis.

Our ST got into this disaster movie by allowing a 99 yard kickoff return for a TD. This transformed a close 10-7 game into an eventual rout.

Back to Jones, the real reason I forced myself to watch this hot mess of a game. I wanted to observe him as objectively as I could after the heat of the season had passed. It was a mixed bag, IMO. First of all, there were few, if any, opportunities to see him run block. Schotty had abandoned the run by this time and was calling passes almost exclusively. Given the score, time left on the clock, and the abysmal condition of our patchwork OL, I can’t say I really blame him. It was a kinda pick your poison situation by then.

But I will say that Jones played respectably in pass pro. He seemed very comfortable in making his line calls. I didn’t see him getting “walked back” into Davis as I did see Wells earlier. So I have to say that Jones looked fairly effective in his limited role in this game. Bearing in mind that the run game had been abandoned and the Chiefs knew it. Also considering that he was playing in the middle of an overmatched OL behind 34-7 on the road. Probably not the best scenario for him to get his NFL debut.

Naturally, this game has now forever been deleted from my DVR. And good riddance! Lol.

That game bothers me so much.

Whether or not it’s disagreement, I think we see it differently.

I am often skeptical of “trajectory” arguments in general. I think that, each year, numerous teams are either better or worse than a “trajectory” projection from the previous year would suggest.

Ok. Always a pleasure reading your thoughts, RFL. We probably see some
    things differently, sure.

I’ll tell ya, the Giant game and the Cardinal game were major disappointments for me.
Really annoying. The Seattle game…well, playing Seattle in Seattle is just a nightmare
so i didnt expect much in that one.

We been waiting a long time RFL — I’m tellin ya, this is our year :)
Top seven D. Efficient O. Great Special teams. Playoffs.
    You’ll see.

Although the NYG and Arizona game annoyed me,the KC and Eagles game really burned me up.After the Dallas game I felt that Davis was obviously in over his head.To me that was a disturbing trend by Fisher to be loyal to a fault in the wrong player i.e. Wells and that turnstile guard Joseph and it ended up costing us.I hope this year he spends more time developing the offense as I am not completely convinced with Foles.

the Philly/Bradford side of the trade story

    Wanna know the truth?

I don’t care. Sam is not a Ram any more. I really don’t care what happens to him on a team I have never cared about 1 way or another. It didn’t work out here. That’s sad looking back. I won’t pay much attention looking forward.

I’m actually fairly ruthless about players who go elsewhere. I just don’t care any more. Some fans continue to follow the player. I never have.

i’m “disheartened” because Sam Bradford is gone…… he played very well right before his last 2 knee injuries….This might be the first time since 1997 that I do not get Sunday Tix and just go with “Game Rewind” because they might have a Tony Banks QB situation with Nick Foles…… I’ll wait and see what I feel in September when it’s time to renew Sunday Tix…..

In regards to the move, I was on the Save the Rams committee snail mail list in 1994 (before the internet was widely available).

I was sad to see the RAMS move, I mean how could a team from LA, rich in tradition, move to STL?????, but when I saw those Ram helmets in a preseason game vs the Raiders as the ST LOUIS Rams, I still found myself rooting for the team…. also, when the internet was made available, the fans on the Post Dispatch message board kept me engaged… Thanks to HAPPY4LA, GRITS, TONYDE, DAVEL, BARF, XACH WVRAM, RFIP, and all the early adopters of the Rams social network to keep me engaged and accept the St Louis Rams….. i think starting off 5-0 in 1995 helped…………then, Ken Norton punched the goal post and the 4 year spiral began………

You’re not the only one.I think the quarterback move set the offense back and it’s going to be another slow start.

    No, it isn’t.

It certainly helps. But that is quite a sustained run. They retooled repeatedly and stayed competitive. They did not sink to the level of their division. So maybe there are some seasons in there where their record looks better than they were, but that is a damn impressive run.

An interesting note about the Patriots. Brady is the Pats leading passer.
But their leading Rusher? Sam Cunningham. Last played in 1982.
Their leading Receiver ? Stanley Morgan. Last played in 1989.

Seems odd that their leading rusher and receiver
had no part in their glory years.

I’m at the point where I don’t read his columns. As one poster noted, since Kroenke let the cat out of the bag about his intentions,Miklasz’s columns have been venom filled and I really don’t need him to tarnish some of the teams accomplishments with his personal agenda.I see remarkable improvement in the defense and other areas.Sometimes I wonder if the Rams are jinxed.Although some people despised Schottenheimer,I would have preferred some continuity. At this point I am at loss as to what to expect this season.

No interviews yet, but sources indicate both Kyle Shanahan and Nathaniel Hackett are on the radar for Rams OC job.

    ==

Bills’ Hackett focuses on positives, not future

    http://bills.buffalonews.com/2014/12/30/bills-hackett-focuses-on-positives-not-future/

Nathaniel Hackett grew up in the household of an NFL offensive coordinator, so he was well aware of all of the pressure that goes with the job before experiencing it first-hand.

His father, Paul, spent nine of his 42 seasons as a football coach running the offenses of the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets.

Nathaniel never will forget what he witnessed the day after the Chiefs, who had finished the regular season with an NFL-best 13-3 record, suffered a 10-7 playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

“I remember going to school and there was a petition to try to get my father fired,” Hackett recalled. “Oh, it was horrible. It was nonstop.”

    How did his father react?

“He would just laugh because there are so many things that people don’t see,” Hackett said. “As long as you focus on that as a coach and you know that you’re doing the right thing and you know that it’s there, that we just have to keep getting better, then that’s all you can do. Because the minute that you focus on the other things, then that’s when you start believing what people are saying. And then that affects you, it affects your job and you can’t do as well.”

That lesson is coming in handy as Hackett, who just finished his second season as the Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator, follows in his father’s footsteps.

Plenty of people have had plenty to say about the job he has done, and most of it is negative. They didn’t like the fact the Bills ranked 26th in the NFL in total offense, 25th in rushing, and 18th in passing on the way to a 15th consecutive non-playoff season. They blasted Hackett for being too predictable with his play-calling and for not doing enough to maximize the production of the Bills’ offensive weapons and for helping to waste the performance of the league’s fourth-ranked defense.

They see Hackett, who turned 35 earlier this month, as lacking the necessary experience to be an effective NFL offensive coordinator. They consider Doug Marrone’s decision to bring Hackett along from his Syracuse University staff when Marrone became the Bills’ coach in 2013 as a rookie mistake.

Hackett has heard it all, including calls for his firing.

“And if that’s what people think, that’s totally their opinion,” he said. “You’re always going to be frustrated, and I don’t blame the fans. They want to win. It’s been 15 years. I’m frustrated, and I’ve only been here for two of those years.

“And that’s the best part about the game. It’s a reality TV show. Everybody wants to point fingers, find somebody” to blame. “And you know what? Hey, if I’m that guy, that’s me.

“There’s a lot of times I wish I could throw it, I wish I could catch it, I wish I could block it, I wish I could do all that stuff. It probably would be a lot uglier, but you just keep your head down and you just keep working hard and you hope that people see the good that does come with it.”

    What was the good?

Hackett points to the Bills’ passing statistics, some of the best of the last 10 years, achieved despite shortcomings in other areas of the offense and the transition at quarterback after four games from EJ Manuel to Kyle Orton, who announced his retirement Monday.

“With our ability to pass the ball, we gave ourselves more opportunities to put ourselves in position to win games,” Hackett said. “We were in games, we were able to move the ball, we did some good things. And we did win more games,” than last season, “and the defense was very good last year, too.”

Still, the climb from 6-10 to 9-7, while significant, hasn’t exactly left the fan base feeling that the team has all of the necessary ingredients to take the next step to playoff contention.

The defense is clearly built for a postseason run, but questions linger about the offense.

    Who will play quarterback?

How will the offensive line be upgraded?

What can be done to improve the atrocious running game?

Will there be a smarter and bolder approach to calling plays?

When Hackett looks back on the offensive failings of the 2014 season, the first thing he sees is self-inflicted wounds.

“I think it’s us killing ourselves,” he said. “You look at penalties, you look at turnovers in critical situations. There are just times we would hurt ourselves from lack of execution or just not making a play, not finishing it, something like that.

“I think a lot of the opportunities were there, and it’s not capitalizing on them, whether we had a guy open and missed it or whether it was something up front or whether we dropped it. I think it was more us just beating ourselves. We keep going back” over the videotape “and you sit there and go, ‘Man, it’s right there for us. We just never took it.’

“We never had that mentality to just go get it, get after it and go.”

Hackett insists that he doesn’t allow the struggles or the criticism to get him down for very long. One of the best antidotes is calling upon the wisdom of his father, with whom he speaks regularly.

“What my dad told me was just work harder than everybody in the building, just keep your head down, keep chopping wood,” he said. “Be positive with the players, because when we’re in here with these guys, it’s about them being good on the field. They’re a reflection of me. And as long as I’m always upbeat and trying to get them going and fired up, that’s all I can do.”

Christmas provided a nice sense of perspective for Hackett.

Marrone gave his assistant coaches and players the day off, having them instead work on Tuesday in preparation for last Sunday’s season-finale against New England.

For Hackett, it was the first time in six months he was able to spend quality time with his wife and their four children.

His 6-year-old son kept him busy with a Fisher Price bow-and-arrow set.

His 5- and 2-year-old daughters modeled princess costumes.

Asked if he was worried about his future with the Bills, Hackett said, “No. I can only control what I can control. If I get a chance to be here again, I want to be here and I want to do everything I can and work harder than everybody in the building like I always feel like I do and help the guys get better and better. Whatever change happens, it happens.”

Good Read.I have a feeling Ryan’s going to muck it up in Buffalo.

All QBs get hurt, look at Arizona, down to #3, their biggest success was based on Palmer and Warner who also had a histories of injury.

Bottom line, most QB’s get hurt …… while very very few rookies succeed.

Keep Bradford…. he is your best choice at this point.

For every Andrew Luck picked, there’s 10 Joey Harringtons or Gio Carmazzis.

And judging by what happened to Luck today,it’s going to take more than the quarterback position.

Not only I believe, but should do so early. Not sure if we can count on Bradford being 100% nextyear, or even play a full season. Not knocking down our backups, but they are not the guys who can fill in and beat real good teams. Not saying there is a great crop out there, but they have to be better than what we have right now. Let it be Winston or Hundley, we need someone.

And then my question to you is,what will this rookie look like running for his life with no pass protection?

I highlight particularly tough (as it looks now) away games:

Home: Arizona, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay

Away: Arizona, San Francisco, Seattle, Green Bay, Minnesota, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Washington

Sure,Why not NE gets one every year.6 cream puff teams in their division.By the way.Look at the last two game on NE schedule speaks volumes.

Technically, couldn’t the Rams still finish ahead of the 49ers and thus alter their 2 games determined by place? (Washington, Tampa Bay would flip to Giants & Falcons likely)

If Harbaugh leaves you can expect a sweep. As for the Cardinals as long as Bradford plays and the line is healthy I expect them to beat them.

If you could get a Sanchez or Foles I’d kick Bradford to the curb. He’s only proven he’s a china doll and gets hurt all the time.

    Grits

Sanchez looked so bad the last two weeks he’s not even worth it and Foles is a system quarterback who will worse in our offense. Why do you think Fisher and Snead said what they said about Bradford because they are ahead of the curve and realize there is nothing in the draft or free agency worth looking at.
