ParticipantYep, the fumbles did them in. They still almost won the game.
They played much better against Philly than I thought they would, going in. Agreed, that they need another strong draft, serious attention given to run-stuffers, and a true, shut down corner.
Williams has to work on ball security.
Good season, overall. The Rams can return to LA with their heads held high.
Billy_T
Participant…so, is the front four now the ‘strength of the team’? Is it becoming the identity of the Rams?
Maybe it depends on how the front four does against the best OLines. Like Philadelphia. And Detroit.
If they get bludgeoned again, then what do we say about them?
Eagles are SIX point favorites.
w
vWith the way they played yesterday, yeah, Strength of the Team. Which leads to this: How good would they be with Aaron Donald added to the mix? Same guys who played Sunday, plus AD? Sheeesh. It wouldn’t have been fair to the Vikings.
;>)
Again, Eagles may be the best team in the NFL, and they certainly have a top three O-line. If the Rams can get to Hurts, it will confirm the D’s stunning success — coaching, player personnel, drafting, etc. It also likely means a Rams’ win.
Billy_T
ParticipantNice to see such a good game against a very good team. The passrush was obviously exceptional, with 9 sacks. D overall was excellent.
On to Philly, and perhaps the best team in the NFL.
Billy_T
ParticipantBasically trained like a Martial Artist.I don’t think any of the guys from the 1960s and 70s did that.
You know who did literally train with a martial artist? D’Marco Farr. He used that training to improve his hands in fighting blocks. It was one of the reasons he had a great year in 99.
Not that Farr, as good as he was in his own way, is on the list of all-time elite DTs. Just mentioning that Farr literally did train with a martial artist.
Did not know that about Farr. Good player. Good as an analysis guy after his playing days were over too.
One would think that Martial Arts would really help pretty much anyone playing in the trenches. Real wraslin’, as well. Leverage, quickness, precision, hand/eye, etc. Attack the sport holistically, and use it all.
I’m still amazed at how hard Donald worked. Makes his early retirement more understandable . . . He went out on top. Was not in decline, etc. So many players choose otherwise . . .
Billy_T
ParticipantIn hindsight, Sapp makes me think of “What could have been?” He was never in particularly great shape, unlike Donald. Few players are, of course. But what could he have done if he worked as hard as AD? Same goes on the other side of the ball, with Eric Dickerson. He went on natural talent, mostly, and didn’t seem to try to bulk up. Olsen too. Farm kid strength, etc.
Donald was especially great with his hands. Basically trained like a Martial Artist. I don’t think any of the guys from the 1960s and 70s did that. If memory serves, he said his playing weight was as low as 260 at times. No business being a DT, but there may have been none better. Ironically, he played at a weight that was the norm in that earlier era . . .
Oh, and I miss the old helmets! They looked much better.
Billy_T
ParticipantSome other factors of import:
Olsen was amazingly consistent, but he played in an era with fewer games per season and fewer pass attempts, as did the rest of the author’s Mount Rushmore. Aside from no official sack tally until 1982, you also didn’t have many teams dropping back to pass 40-45 times a game. The NFL was dominated by running teams, so the DT generally was responsible for stopping the run, and that doesn’t show up in the headlines as much.
I think the lack of elite support for Donald may be the biggest factor in his favor. He did more with less than the other guys. Am glad I got to see the old school players and Donald.
Billy_T
ParticipantWas hoping it would be Washington, but this should be an excellent game, too. Glad it’s a home game, though.
Billy_T
ParticipantWinning ugly is still winning, so I’ll gladly take it.
Agree about needing more team speed. The Rams go mostly by GPS metrics, which work if done in game-time conditions, but not at the Combine, IMO. The whole point should be to test with pads on, etc., etc. I think Cooper and Puka had solid scores at the Senior Bowl, but have forgotten if they were in full uniform or just practice clothes. Puka shows good speed on Sundays, but not elite. The Rams need some elite speed to open things up. An Atwell, but with size.
Billy_T
ParticipantRams were helped along today by Carolina defeating the Cards. Az is eliminated, so doesn’t have the playoffs to play for next week. Just pride, I suppose.
Ugly win for the Rams? Still a victory. If they win the next two games, they’re in, as division leaders. After their terrible start, that’s an amazing turnaround.
Billy_T
ParticipantEnjoyable game, but less so than when they score at least a touchdown. Defense was excellent against the run, and there were fewer missed tackles. Nice to see the young D coalesce, etc.
As others have mentioned, rain was an obvious factor — for the offenses of both teams.
It may be one of those years in which the Rams need to win the division to get into the playoffs. With the final two games against the Cards and the Seahawks, they control their own destiny.
I like their chances.
Billy_T
ParticipantGreat to see an entire game, and a win at that!
Stafford was pretty sharp throughout. About the only disappointment was a lack of a passrush, pretty much. Though Allen escaped from pressure several times. Excellent special teams block. Puka was amazing.
If they beat the 49ers Thursday, they have a really good chance to win the division . . . . Who would have thunk it a few weeks ago?
Billy_T
ParticipantLike everyone here, I’m happy for the win, and the 49ers continued troubles. It will tell us a ton about the Rams if they can go toe to toe against Buffalo next, one of the elite teams in the league. Glad it’s at home, and hope it’s on here locally. Should be a great game . . .
Billy_T
ParticipantMissed tackles on D; fumbles on O. Eagles have more talent overall, but I think the Rams could have won this one if they cleaned up a few things.
Good to watch my team, regardless.
Billy_T
ParticipantMine is the painting, 6th row from top, 4th square from left.
Thanks in advance.
It’s not Crouch.
Billy_T
ParticipantGot to see last two minutes or so, plus OT. Bonus coverage locally. Nice to see defense play well when it counted, especially the rooks.
Stafford came up big when he had to, as did Robinson. Great one handed catch, with the DB holding down the other arm. He’s a very good #3 wideout.
Tied for division lead! Didn’t see that happening after the first few losses.
Billy_T
ParticipantFun watching the Rams, especially with Kupp and Nacua finally back. They looked good enough to compete for a playoff spot.
October 23, 2024 at 5:59 pm in reply to: Kupp on the block, apparently + Titans trade E.Jones to Seattle #152722Billy_T
ParticipantI just hope the Rams dont accept a bullshit offer for him. If its not a really good deal — just keep him. w v
Agreed. Don’t give him away, like they did Ernest Jones.
For comparison sake:
The Titans traded Ernest Jones back to the NFC West – and got more than the Rams did in August
According to Brady Henderson of ESPN, the Titans are trading Jones to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for linebacker Jerome Baker and a fourth-round pick. And yes, that’s more than the Rams got for Jones less than two months ago when they shocking shipped him off to Tennessee just before the season started.
Somehow, the Titans managed to get more in return for Jones than the Rams did. In the Rams’ deal, they sent Jones and a sixth-round pick to the Titans for a fifth-rounder. It’s obviously a poor reflection on the Rams, who everyone believed should’ve gotten more for Jones but they were apparently desperate to jettison him off the roster.
Sorry if this has already been posted . . .

ParticipantSaw some highlights. Listened a bit on the radio. Always gonna like the win, but judging from the comments, not much to look at this week. Offense still missing too many important parts.
Hoping Thursday night will be fun to watch. A tough match for them, of course. What will losing a close one to Detroit do to Vikings. Flat, or revved up?
Billy_T
ParticipantI don’t have an account on twitter, so if the link sends me there, I can’t watch it. But if it stays on this page, I can . . . which is what happens above.
;>)
Billy_T
ParticipantNice to be able to see the whole game.
I think the Rams are lacking team cohesion right now. I think they lost the heart of the team on defense with Donald and haven’t replaced that heart yet. And they miss Ernest Jones. On offense, the heart is on IR. Puca and Cooper, basically. Avila is a huge loss as well.
Anyway, bright spots, off the top of me head: Kyren running well, and Whittington looking like a solid depth guy for the wideout room. Verse shows a lot of promise, but still needs to learn how to set the edge, as Romo said. I think they’re a lot better than their record, but they need guys to heal up and fast.
Billy_T
ParticipantNo local broadcast, so just going on highlights and comments by others: Looks like they shoulda coulda won this one. They really can’t afford to lose next week to Green Bay. Want to see that one.
Hope they got through this game without more injuries, etc.
Billy_T
ParticipantFrom your comments, the highlights, and the boxscore, looks like the Rams had a running game again. If Stafford has that, he can pick apart most defenses. Throw in a solid ST unit, and the Rams will surprise a lot of teams that had written them off as too banged up.
Most important takeaway, though, is the Rams gotta make sure Kyren Williams never tries that somersault into the end zone again. Scary sight!
;>)
Billy_T
ParticipantSaw the highlights. Great comeback win, especially against the Niners. Looks like the Rams are rounding into shape, at least along their O-line.
Defense played well when it counted. Tough goal line stops, etc.
I wish I could have seen this one!
Billy_T
ParticipantDid the Rams avoid new injuries?
Kupp may be banged up. Looks that way.
That would be a shame. I was really hopeful, going into this season . . .
15 games to turn things around, etc.
Billy_T
ParticipantDidn’t see the game, just the final score. Did the Rams avoid new injuries?
Billy_T
ParticipantThe Rams just had too many key injuries. Crazy that so much happened in the first game.
If the Rams can hang in there were the Lions, fighting so much adversity, they can hang in there with anyone once they get healthy again.
Billy_T
ParticipantTo me, gymnastics is the pinnacle of sports, when it comes to testing the limits of the human body. I don’t think there’s another sport that requires such complete athleticism: power, speed, strength, flexibility, balance, precision, etc. From the rings, to the vault, to the floor exercises, the very best do things consistently that defy gravity. And perhaps with the exception of the rings, female gymnasts seem to be able to do everything the male gymnasts do.
In short, I think great gymnasts would be able to work there way into most every major sport and excel. The reverse course would be much dicier.
Billy_T
ParticipantWould they have got a 6th rounder for him anyway? Or something?
yeah. that’s what i want to know. cuz that would piss me off even more. even if speights is better than jones. then start both or keep one for depth. i want to understand why.
Wouldn’t they have received a comp pick based on his new salary with his new team? That means it could have been as high as a 3rd. I think a 4th was doable for a starting linebacker, on the cusp of being a pro bowler. At least a 5th. Oh, well.
Hopefully, Jourdan will have some insights soon enough.
Billy_T
ParticipantTo me…they got so little in return that they would have been better off keeping him for the year, and letting him go for nothing at the end of this season. I would rather have one more year of Jones, and nothing in return, than give him up for the difference between a 6th and 5th rounder.
Agreed, Zooey.
Billy_T
ParticipantBizarre trade. I just don’t understand the Rams sometimes. Other teams must love it when they get McSnead on the phone, talking trade. They know they’re going to get a steal.
Oh, well.
