http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/10/28/bucs-send-mark-barron-to-the-rams/As Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith tries to remake the defensive roster into a unit that will better employ his preferred defense, they’ve moved on from one of the safeties acquired by the prior Tampa regime.
Per a league source, Mark Barron has been shipped to the Rams. The former Alabama standout was picked eighth overall by the Bucs in 2012. At the Jimmy Graham franchise tag grievance hearing, former Bucs assistant Butch Davis testified that Barron was drafted specifically because of Graham.
Barron, a strong safety, started 16 games as a rookie, 14 in 2013, and all seven in 2014.
The Rams inherit Barron’s rookie contract, with runs through 2015 but which carries an option for 2016. To extend the deal, the Rams will have to agree to pay Barron in 2016 the average of the 10 highest-paid safeties in 2015.
He’ll make the remainder of his $1.7 million salary this year. Next year, Barron’s pay bumps to $2.3 million.

Buccaneers trade safety Mark Barron to Rams for picksBy Marc Sessler

Published: Oct. 28, 2014 at 04:09 p.m.
Updated: Oct. 28, 2014 at 04:33 p.m.The Buccaneers weren’t kidding about dangling Mark Barron as trade bait.
NFL Media’s Albert Breer reported that Tampa Bay’s starting safety has been shipped to the St. Louis Rams ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET trade deadline, per a Bucs and Rams source. St. Louis will send Tampa a fourth-rounder and sixth-rounder in return, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source involved in the deal.
Rapoport noted Tuesday morning that the Bucs were open to moving Barron, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, who racked up just three interceptions over 37 starts on the heels of a stellar career at Alabama. The backstop — ranked No. 66 at his position by Pro Football Focus — hasn’t lived up to his pedigree.
Still, it’s another intriguing addition to a feisty Rams defense that currently houses T.J. McDonald and Rodney McLeod at safety. Per multiple reports, St. Louis waived quarterback Case Keenum to make room for Barron.
He hasn’t been particularly good in coverage or against the run, but Barron now has a fresh start in a new system — his third in as many seasons — under Jeff Fisher.
The Bucs are also completing a deal to send linebacker Jonathan Casillas to the Patriots. In the end, Tampa held on to running back Doug Martin and wide receiver Vincent Jackson, both subjects of trade chatter leading up to Tuesday’s deadline.

AgamemnonParticipantAgamemnonParticipantBailey is the guy I would trust to make that catch. He is really good at tracking the ball in the air. It does also shows that you can throw deep anytime. If Bailey can start at the line of scrimmage, facing backwards and still catch the ball that far down the field, then the QB can always get off a punt like throw. GO DEEP! 😉

Fisher a fan of Governor’s Cup
28 minutes ago • By Jim Thomas jthomas@post-dispatch.com 314-340-8197OK, there’s no I-70 World Series this year. But we do have the vaunted Governor’s Cup this Sunday when the Rams travel to Kansas City for a noon kickoff with the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
“It’s in the building and it happens to be my favorite trophy in the building,” Rams coach Jeff Fisher deadpanned. “I’m not real fond of the Super Bowl trophy in the building. Yeah, so we’re going to do everything we can to keep it.”
Obviously that Super Bowl trophy came at his expense, a 23-16 Rams victory over Fisher’s Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV.
So each morning, when Fisher walks past the trophy case in the Rams Park lobby, does he look at the Governor’s Cup or the Lombardi Trophy?
“Both of these trophies have been awarded on past performance, so I would take the Governor’s,” he said, smiling.
Fisher is 1-0 in Governor’s Cup games as Rams head coach, having won a preseason game 31-17 over the Chiefs in 2012.
The Chiefs are 10-9 overall in Governor’s Cup games against the “St. Louis” Rams _ 5-0 in regular season contests and 5-9 in exhibition meetings.
Against the St. Louis football Cardinals, the Chiefs were 16-7-2 overall _ 2-1-1 in regular-season contests and 14-6-1 in preseason play.
Perhaps fitting since the Big Red moved after the season to Arizona, the last Cup game played by Bill Bidwill’s squad took place in Memphis during the 1987 strike year. The Chiefs won that one, 13-10.
Because the teams play in different conferences and play each other only once every four years in the regular season, it’s almost impossible to build any kind of in-state rivalry. And Fisher concedes even a regular-season contest is no I-70 series.
“I think there’s a significant difference,” he said. “What we’re doing is we’re playing a playoff team from last year that played very, very, well in the AFC West. I think they’re a much better team than their record (3-3) right now.
“They are loaded with talent. Andy’s (Reid) doing a great job there. The quarterback (Alex Smith) is playing very well and it becomes our biggest challenge thus far because it’s our next game. We’ll talk about whoever gets the trophy and what that means when the game’s over.”
If the Rams move to San Diego, they will have to give up the Governor’s CupOctober 22, 2014 at 2:45 pm in reply to: rams-raiders-would-be-los-angeles-bound—-if-not-for-the-nfl #10174AgamemnonParticipanthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_j_nVGYbV0

Jim Thomas Reacts to Burwell Report on The Press BoxBrendan Marks posted on October 21, 2014 07:40
The unclear future of the Rams continues to loom over St. Louis, and the latest shots were fired Sunday when CBS Sports’ Jason LaCanfora reported the team would be heading to Los Angeles next year if it wasn’t for the NFL’s control of the process.
LaCanfora’s report came just days after The Home Stretch co-host and St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Bryan Burwell reported there are talks going on behind the scenes of possibly developing an outdoor football stadium in downtown St. Louis.
LaCanfora stopped in on The Ryan Kelley Morning After on Tuesday, and said he doesn’t currently see a scenario in which the Rams won’t be playing in Los Angeles in the next two years.

Rams report: Rams release Pettis
27 minutes ago • By Jim Thomas jthomas@post-dispatch.com 314-340-8197The Rams parted ways with wide receiver Austin Pettis on Monday. And while the timing of his release was a surprise, the end result wasn’t.
“We appreciate Austin’s contribution, everything that he’s done here,” coach Jeff Fisher said. “He’s made a lot of plays for us, but we need to make some moves with respect to some other positions. I’m not going to go into detail what we’re going to do, but we needed a roster spot.”
Although Fisher wouldn’t comment further on the roster needs, the Rams remain light at the linebacker position and that could be the position the team is looking at.
As the only wide receiver on the team not brought in by Fisher and general manager Les Snead, Pettis has been on the precipice of the roster for some time. His playing time was cut drastically last season once rookie Stedman Bailey began playing more over the second half of the year.
And through this preseason and onto the regular season, it has been clear that Pettis was either the team’s fifth or sixth wide receiver once Bailey’s NFL suspension was cut short after two games when the league introduced its new drug policy.
The fact that Pettis was late for a team meeting Saturday didn’t help his cause and helped tipped the scales in terms of releasing him at this point. But there were other factors at work.
For one, Pettis’ contract was set to expire after this season, and the club had given no indication that it would re-sign him.
Pettis had taken a $481,000 pay cut in a contract restructuring at the start of the 2014 season, hardly a sign of having a future with the club. (He did have an opportunity to earn back $400,000 of that amount by reaching certain incentives.)
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the Rams have had trouble giving five wide receivers enough work in games — much less six. With Pettis a pregame inactive vs. Seattle, Chris Givens was in for only five snaps Sunday, and Bailey for only two.
Givens had been inactive the previous two games, but had a key 30-yard reception on third down that set up what proved to be the game-winning touchdown in the Rams’ 28-26 upset victory over Seattle on Sunday. Givens brings a speed option to the game that Pettis doesn’t have, and also has more special teams value as a kickoff returner.
Pettis’ highlight moment this season was a leaping 27-yard touchdown pass that led to the game-winning field goal in a 19-17 Week 2 victory over Tampa Bay. But the success of Brian Quick and addition of Kenny Britt has made this an improved wide receiver group, which didn’t help Pettis’ cause.
“I believe that they’ve stepped up,” Fisher said of the group. “Brian is stepping up and making plays. Kenny is doing good things for us. Stedman is going to get more involved. Obviously you can see, we’re trying to get Tavon (Austin) the ball as well.”
Pettis had 12 receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown this season. A third-round draft pick out of Boise State in 2011 by the Steve Spagnuolo-Billy Devaney regime, Pettis caught 107 passes for 1,034 yards and nine TDs in his time with the Rams.
With his departure, only 10 players remain who predated the arrival of Fisher and Snead in 2012.
The Rams also released practice squad wide receiver Emory Blake, who also was late for a team meeting Saturday.

Turning point: Chris Givens’ big catch
By Nick WagonerEARTH CITY, Mo. — Here is a look back at the turning-point in the St. Louis Rams’ 28-26 win against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon:
Givens
The situation: With a third-and-6 at Seattle’s 44 and a 21-19 lead that had shrunk from 21-3, the Rams looked poised to let another big lead slip away for another disappointing loss. The offense had barely moved the ball at all in the second half and now desperately needed a drive that ended in the end zone. A field goal would have helped stop the bleeding, but probably would have been little more than a quick fix delaying the inevitable. A promising drive had taken a turn for the worse after Tavon Austin gained 4 yards on first down and quarterback Austin Davis threw incomplete on second. The Rams needed points, but first they needed to move the chains. The play: The Rams lined up with Austin split wide right, Chris Givens in the slot beneath him and Brian Quick wide to the left. With Davis in the shotgun and flanked by running back Benny Cunningham to his left and tight end Jared Cook to his right, Davis sent Cook in motion to the left before going back to the right. Seattle was in its nickel defense with cornerback Marcus Burley matched up against Givens in the slot. At the snap, the Seahawks sent linebacker Malcolm Smith on a blitz that the Rams cleanly picked up with right tackle Joe Barksdale handling Smith with relative ease. Quick ran a crossing route from Davis’ left to right, which cleared out that side of the field as Austin and Cook ran deep routes down the right sideline. Burley allowed Givens a free release to the inside, possibly with the expectation that he would have safety help. But safety Kam Chancellor decided to help cover Cook and Earl Thomas took a step toward the receivers running down the right sideline, leaving him flat footed and unable to help on Givens. Givens runs a deep crossing route with a step on Burley the whole way. Given a clean pocket and plenty of time to throw, Davis fired a strike to Givens for a 30-yard gain to Seattle’s 14.
The fallout: There were a ton of plays to pick from for this spot this week, and since we already went into great detail on the two big special teams plays on Sunday, I chose this one because it led to the points that would ultimately decide the game. After Givens’ catch, a play made more relevant by the fact that Givens had been inactive the previous two weeks, the Rams scored three plays later when Davis hit tight end Lance Kendricks for a 4-yard touchdown. That gave the Rams a 28-19 lead, and though there were other things that happened after it to determine the outcome, we never get to those without this. Making it more important was the fact that Davis had not even attempted a pass more than 19 yards downfield until hitting Givens here.
“We thought we’d get man-to-man coverage,” Davis said. “When they need a play, they trust their guys to cover man-to-man. Chris, with his speed, just ran across the field. I trusted it and obviously, we worked the play all week, and when we needed it, he made a big play. That’s how you win games. You’ve got to make big plays when the game is on the line. You’re going to have a chance to go down and win the game at the end or not. Today, we did it.”
