I see a lot of posts around the net by people who are annoyed at the national media for not seeing how improved and dynamic Goff will be this year. I don’t share that view.
Here’s my theory. Goff hasn’t shown them yet.
Remember nationals do not watch every single game the way we do. No one watches all 16 games of all 32 teams. There are other stories. So what do they know of Goff? In the Rams 5 toughest games he was spottier than in the other, less challenging games.
I count their toughest games as ones played against teams with both a good offense and a top 10 defense. That would be Jax, Minn, N.O., Phil, and Atlanta.
Not only did the Rams win only 2 out of 3 of those, but Goff in particular was not up to his own 2017 standard in those games. He played well against N.O, played well most of the game against PHil but the offense failed to put the game away with time to do it in the end (that’s not all on the offense, it was the defense too, but still, right now the question is, what do nationals know about Goff). So I don’t count the Phil game. He was below his own standard against Jac, Minn, and what’s especially visible to the nationals, also against Atlanta.
So 2 things. 1: we’re homers. 2. we saw every game so we know more than the nationals. We can rightfully expect Goff to step up and a more seasoned offense (if it stays healthy) to do better in tough games like that.
And when Goff does as expected step up, and does as expected do better in tougher AND more nationally visible games like that, here’s what I expect the nationals to do.
Change their minds.
So you won’t be hearing anything from me that sounds like a vindictive homer rubbing it in and gloating at the blindness of the nationals who should have seen this coming. I don’t think it’s really like that.
Naw it’s simple, Goff didn’t show everything he had to to convince people, and when he does, they will change their minds. Yawn.
In other words there’s no story here.

i don’t think we’ll really know what we have here until maybe three years from now which would be his fifth year in the league.

Maybe they already wrote the story that Goff’s a bust and they’re just trying to hold out until it’s true. Goff and McVay are a great team. He’s shown growth that’s hard to miss . Remember after the Skins game the knock was he couldn’t read defenses and would lock on to Kupp fast foward to the Hags game when Earl Thomas said in his post game that Goff was getting better and actually moved ET off with his eyes. The ball was there in that game Kupp dropped it Kupp fumbled what would have been a 14-0 lead on the vikes. He killed it in the PA game granted having Gurley makes that a lot easier but imo he sells it better than most. 27 tds to 7 ints there are several QBs rated higher than Goff that weren’t even close in that dept. I think you underestimate Goff at your own peril this year. I don’t remember him throwing perfect 60 yard bombs in last years OTAs.

Seriously. Especially here in the BA. To them, he’s the second coming of Christ.

Count me among those who hope he crashes and burns.
And I would like someone to make a video montage of random 9’ers fans’ faces as they watch it happen.

I think we can all agree that we will enjoy watching the Matt Casselization of Garopolo.

I like what Garopolo brings to the game. I think he represents the future of not just the qb position, but of football itself, if not the entire evolution of the species as a whole. It’s what’s best.

So…we shall see.

vI will be looking at some of these benchmarks to see how he’s doing. He doesn’t have to pass all of them (my theory is, Goff is a slow learner. He’s smart but you can be smart and a slow learner.)
* As mentioned, better performance in games against tough opponents (teams with both good offenses and a top 10 defense). Particularly in the final half-quarter of those games. His %Pass Completed in Close Games stat was 51.9%, which ranked 26th. He is even worse with this stat: %Passes Completed, Late & Close. With that he was 45.3% which ranked 31st.
* Long passing. 31 yards and over, he threw 3% of his total attempts in that range(which is low), and completed 33% (which is okay). 11-30 yards, he threw 27.7% of his total attempts in that range (which is high) and completed 46% (which is low-ish). Interestingly, if you look at a related but different stat, the Rams do quite well. That’s Big Play Passes of 25 Yards or More (the difference is with this one, you count YAC, well with the first stats I gave, it’s all ball in the air only). On this stat the Rams ranked 5th in the league.
* Throwing on the run. I initially thought he was good at this but as the season wore on he had his share of dirtballs with this.
