They are “good” at just about everything. Is that enough? It could be enough to make noise in the tournament, if they stay healthy.
However, when I think about championship teams, most have elite players or units. Brady, Broncos defense, Seattle defense + Wilson, Brady, NYG Defense/DL, Raven Defense, Rogers, Brady.
Maybe the closest “good at everything, but not great at anything” recent example are the past couple Pittsburgh championship squads. You could argue Big Ben was “elite” when they beat the Cardinals, but not when they beat the Seahawks. Troy P. was DEFINITELY elite.
That New England squad that won in 2001 probably fits the definition (puke), but we will never know since that ring doesn’t count due to Spygate.
I do see A LOT of “good at everything but not elite” types as SB runner-ups.
Personally, I don’t see the Rams as SuperBowl bound right now anyway. However, if they maintain their current trajectory of improvement, who knows?
Is the front 7 elite? Maybe they will be down the stretch. Gurley? Probably, but we saw last year that he is not going to carry the team (no RB probably can). Hekker? GZ? Yes, yes they are. Is having elite teams and being “good” everywhere else enough to put them over the top?
I think Watkins has elite ability, but the production is not there right now, obviously.Meh, these are things I think about when I’m home alone and the pharmaceuticals run out.
October 25, 2017 at 7:40 pm #76539znModeratorIt may be too soon for that. Cause I agree, they’re developing. In process.
BUT if I had to project from what they have shown so far, I would say 2 things. They will have 2 strengths:
1. The medium/deep medium pass. 11-25 yarders. Where suddenly they rip you downfield for big chunks at a time. IMO that’s both a McVay “thing” and a Goff talent.
2. On defense, pass rush & pressure. Right now they rank 5th in sack percentage and 4th in sacks. That’s with Quinn being less than his former self and with Donald growing into his role in the new D. That’s with Longacre being their leading sacker. So this will get even better across time.
October 25, 2017 at 8:11 pm #76545lyserParticipantOh yeah man, if the medium pass becomes almost automatic like the GSOT, then look out! I agree, they do have the scheme and the horses for that, but that may be a next year thing.
The front seven and the D in general has a chance, maybe even a decent chance, to become consistently dominant THIS year IMO. They have AD, the best D player in the game. Brockers is playing out of his mind and Barron pretty much is too. AO brings it on the blitz and makes some splash plays. With Wade pulling the strings, they have a shot. I actually EXPECTED them to be an elite D this year and was surprised at the early results. They are coming around now though – lots of talent on that side of the ball.

I think at this point they finally have all their starters and everyone up to speed (Joyner missed time during the summer, so did Donald of course, etc.)
A Wade Phillips defense, when it’s clicking and playing effectively, is just so much fun to watch.
October 26, 2017 at 12:21 pm #76555Eternal RamnationParticipantThe Rams are elite at keeping their offense on the field. I don’t know the stats but they have been very good on converting 3rd downs and lead the league in scoring because of it. I would love to see them use Reynolds in the redzone.
October 26, 2017 at 12:26 pm #76556wvParticipantThey probably arent great at anything yet, but they will be. Its pretty obvious the passing game is just getting started. We keep reading this offense is a combo of the Saints/Pats/Falcons. And you can see that. But as good as they’ve been, its still not close to where it will be in the future. They are just starting to gel.
They have to resign Donald.

vOctober 26, 2017 at 1:41 pm #76557joemadParticipantgreat coaching….
i think they’re great at offensive play calling, just outstanding. The Rams blow me away this season….
when you’re dead last in offense in 2016 to #9 this year and dead last in 3rd down conversions (32%) to #2 (Rams are converting 3rd downs 49% of the time, only Philly is higher at 50%), that is a outstanding, great play calling. No panic on 3rd and long…
Even back in preseason, you’d see nice play calling and execution which was non-existent in the past few years and you say to yourself, “fuck, the Rams look pretty fucking good and creative on offense” ……. it’s creativity that is not based on gimmicks, but smart routes and plays…. it’s very cool to watch.
McVay also balances the run very well, with the time consuming drive in Jax to seal the game with an FG… that’s football. The ability to put a game away, that right there, to do that against a great Jax D on the road just motivated the shit out of me….
the game vs Seattle, with no timeouts, the play calling got them in position to win with less than 2 min / ZERO timeouts…. too bad Kupp didn’t make the catch… that would’ve been electrifying had he made that catch…..
they didn’t panic in Dallas either, just outstanding coaching and playing calling.
what this offense playbook gives the Rams is hope, in years past, the Rams had no hope with the offensive play calling, they might as well just punted on 3rd down. Now they have the ability to consistently convert.
and to your point, Hekker and Zurlien are great too …….

I’m good, Lysol. Been pretty busy lately battling with moths in my closets. The internet tells me that vinegar is the key to mothless closets. I’m trying a combo of Kentucky whiskey and white vinegar. Anyway, they have to sign Donald.
McV said, on the Rich Eisen interview, that Turnovers are the key to this team. When they get turnovers and dont lose turnovers, they win. He emphasized it.
I found an old apple-turnover in my closet. Looked to be about three years old. I’ve been pondering whether its related to my moth problem. Ok, carry on.

Once I drank too much kentucky whiskey and got lost in my closet. It suddenly started snowing and I was molested by a moose that walked on his hind legs and smoked cigars.
