Not only I believe, but should do so early. Not sure if we can count on Bradford being 100% nextyear, or even play a full season. Not knocking down our backups, but they are not the guys who can fill in and beat real good teams. Not saying there is a great crop out there, but they have to be better than what we have right now. Let it be Winston or Hundley, we need someone.

And why do you think they can count on a rookie qb? Heck if anything, over the last few years (from 2011 on) the 1st round qbs on avg. have not done as well as the 2nd and 3rd round qbs.

BTW everyone who says Bradford will be back also says they will draft a guy in the 1st 3 rounds, so there’s really no argument here.

I look at it, as he would be better than what we have playing right now.

I just know that if they have to rely on a rookie QB in games like tonight, you can expect some big mistakes that can snowball big time. We don’t even know if Hundley or Winston will be any good in the NFL after getting years of experience.

    Here’s the thing.

If we play a rookie or a backup like Hill most of next year, we’ll be 7-9 again.

We need a legit starter. Sam is the only likely option, and he ain’t gonna last through September.

It’s a lousy situation. Unless we find a vet FA who can play decently.

By virtue of the absurd ...

I doubt they are even better than Davis…as rookies anyway.

How are rookie qbs doing as a rule, Jack.

I think the Rams should be talking to the Eagles. They have three potential starting QBs on their roster.
I cannot see either Sanchez or Foles being happy with being on the bench after having been starters. I don’t care what the national outlook is on Sanchez, he’s better than what the Rams have right now and better than most of the veteran QB options out there. If the Rams had Sanchez last night they would have beaten the Cardinals. Sanchez when the Jets were good his first couple years in the pros, he quarterbacked them to two AFC title games. The Rams do not have a QB on their roster with that kind of pedidgree.

If I couldn’t pry Sanchez away then I’d certainly talk to them about Nick Foles or Matt Barkley.

Draft a QB in the first round, start Bradford and hope he doesn’t get hurt, start rookie in season 2.

Sanchez looked so bad the last two weeks he’s not even worth it and Foles is a system quarterback who will worse in our offense. Why do you think Fisher and Snead said what they said about Bradford because they are ahead of the curve and realize there is nothing in the draft or free agency worth looking at.

rams do need to draft a qb this year. i think that’s obvious. not to play next year but to develop.

bradford is about close to done as could be. i can understand why fisher and snead would want to extend him but would be astonished if they did not draft one for the future.

i mean he not only snapped his acl twice. he did twice in less than a year. it sucks. a healthy bradford would have made a huge difference this year and for the future. but it’s time the rams prepare for a future without him.

    Depends on the round.

So what’s the hit rate? I count as “hits” anyone who becomes a starter for more than just a year, even if he eventually fades.

Since 2000, hit rate on qbs taken in rounds 4-7:
    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/draft-finder.cgi?request=1&year_min=2000&year_max=2013&type=&round_min=4&round_max=7&slot_min=1&slot_max=500&league_id=&team_id=&pos=QB&college_id=all&conference=any&show=all

I count Brady and Bulger as “hits.” That’s 2 of 106. Hit rate = 1.9%

    Rounds 2 & 3: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/draft-finder.cgi?request=1&year_min=2000&year_max=2013&type=&round_min=2&round_max=3&slot_min=1&slot_max=500&league_id=&team_id=&pos=QB&college_id=all&conference=any&show=all

I count as hits Brees, Schaub (though he fell apart), Dalton, Wilson, Kaepernick, and Foles.

    That’s 6 of 34. Hit rate = 17.6%

    Round 1: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/draft-finder.cgi?request=1&year_min=2000&year_max=2013&type=&round_min=1&round_max=1&slot_min=1&slot_max=500&league_id=&team_id=&pos=QB&college_id=all&conference=any&show=all

I count as hits Manning, Rivers, Roethlisberger, Vick, Eli, Rodgers, Palmer, Cutler, Flacco, Newton, Smith, Stafford, Luck, Bradford, and Tannenhill

    That’s 15 of 37. Hit rate = 40.5%

HOWEVER, in the last couple of years, rounds 2 & 3 have done better than round 1.

    2011-13, rounds 2 and 3: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/draft-finder.cgi?request=1&year_min=2011&year_max=2013&type=&round_min=2&round_max=3&slot_min=1&slot_max=500&league_id=&team_id=&pos=QB&college_id=all&conference=any&show=all

    4 of 8. Hit rate = 50%.

    Round 1: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/draft-finder.cgi?request=1&year_min=2011&year_max=2013&type=&round_min=1&round_max=1&slot_min=1&slot_max=500&league_id=&team_id=&pos=QB&college_id=all&conference=any&show=all

    3 of 9. Hit rate = 33%.

I think the Rams should just go OL in the draft ,we need a center and R&F Guards,I like Saffold but he gets hurt a lot. A dominant OL would help more than any rookie QB the Rams can draft.

Just looking over JoeMad’s list, it’s very clear. Getting a quarterback through the draft is risky business. So so many misses. That 2007 class has to be historically bad. If you’re running a QB needy team, you’ve got a big problem on your hands.

That’s at least 22 Qbs in the mix as starters for their team who were drafted in the first round.

Brady and Romo were the longshots who made it.

Beyond that there isn’t much below round #3.

This suggests that starters need to come from the first few rounds–especially the first 2 rounds.

Now the interesting question to me is if this is all because of talent or if it is more because of teams investing in the development of the #1s more. Warner was cast aside in Green Bay and almost didn’t make it in St. Louis but somehow he got through, got an opportunity and took off. He was special.

But I would think the Rams have no choice but to select their QB within the first two rounds or trade for the high rounder who is being pushed aside.

Of course they do have the 1st rounder on the roster–if he can stay healthy.

Looks like Russell Wilson is clearly
the best QB in the NFC West, now.

I think the Rams should just go OL in the draft ,we need a center and R&F Guards,I like Saffold but he gets hurt a lot. A dominant OL would help more than any rookie QB the Rams can draft.

I agree with that, in principle.

Well, as always, this is academic.

Much will depend on which junior QBs declare and how their post-season workouts go. Some QB could just “get hot” and just have the light go on and start throwing lights out. It’s happened before.

Also depends on how the first and second rounds are shaking out. I figure we will be drafting around 15 or so…

Which either puts us in a nice position to trade down for a sweet interior OL and then pick up a QB in the 2nd or to maybe pick up a BPA player sliding or grab a QB that we really like for our system that others don’t.

Lots of options, but far too many variables this early.

If the Rams decide to go with a rookie QB
next year…let us hope it does

’bout what I expected. He wasn’t ready at any point to be a starting NFL QB.

I know they play different positions, but to think, there’s no place for Michael Sam, but this guy’s gonna get chance after chance after chance…

    Manziel might improve.

In fact I am holding my breath on it.

    Agree with both points.

If Bradford can play they won’t be doing the high pick, franchise savior route anyway…that would mean too much stress on the whole qb issue (controversy)…but if he can’t play, they want someone behind him who at least has a chance to develop.

    Interesting situation.

They could end up with either

    * more than one viable starting qb

    or

    * nothing
