Oh well. I’d have preferred that the Rams found a way to keep him, but it appears that maybe this offseason is all about retooling the defense. That’s not to say that I think they’ll do nothing to fix the offense. I hope that this means a third round compensatory pick in 2019.

So, if Austin is in fact in his way out the door that’s two holes WR. Of course, the Rams could opt to carry one less WR on their roster. Perhaps they’re going to gamble on Reynolds progressing. This doesn’t sound like a top heavy draft at WR. I’ve seen mocks that don’t have a WR coming off the board until the late teens. So there could be decent WRs to choose from at 23. I don’t think that their will be any WRs that have Watkins skill set, however. I’d prefer the Rams find an OLB/edge rusher or a LT of the future though.

Short term, it seems like there is no way the Rams offense doesn’t take a step backwards this season, but with the future money that the Rams might have to spend to keep guys like Donald, Goff and Gurley I can see why they’d pass on giving Watkins $16 million/year. Although, I’m not much for following the cap so maybe they could have found a way to make that all happen.

i don’t know. they just got rid of alex smith. they do have a promising young qb, but it looks like they’re in rebuild mode. it’s not the best situation for success. they do have andy reid, and he knows offense.

That was just too expensive. You can’t blame Watkins, he went with the money. But considering what he brought last year, the price tag was way too high.

Mcvay will get along without Watkins. The thing this offense most relies on is Gurley. He’s still here.

Good for Sammy. I would have paid him only $12-13 million/yr. The Rams should get a 3rd round comp pick next year for Watkins.

Last year WRs in his tier (like Adams and Jeffrey) got 13-14 M. Contracts go up. This year the expected range for WRs in that tier would be 15-16 M. That sounds like more or less what we should have expected.

I’m not shocked, especially since the cap went up, and the FA pool is not saturated. But while I hoped to keep Watkins, I don’t think that number works with Donald, Gurley, and Goff needing new contracts. Watkins was more expendable than any of those guys.

    More on that.

We don’t know yet what happened.

If he was not worth trading for in the first place, then that’s Snead and McVay. (You have to include McVay because Snead is not just going to impose a player on the head coach–they had to agree on that or it wouldn’t happen). Meaning, if they did not think he was worth the more or less expected range of 15-16 M, then they should not have done the trade.

However, if he was worth the trade, and was worth keeping, then probably they should have tied him up—and unless they were in the 16 M range, they were lowballing. That’s more on Demoff and Pastoors.

Or maybe it was some kind of combination of those things in which case it’s on all of them.

Or maybe SW just didn’t want to play for the Rams for whatever reason, in which case it’s on none of them.

BUT no matter what you think of Watkins, there’s this consideration too. As Ag points out, they could get a 3rd round compensatory pick for this next year. When Snead made the trade he said that the potential comp pick was one reason they did the trade.

Too much for the Rams. At least he didn’t go to the niners!

It would have been nice to keep Watkins, but I don’t believe he adds $16M/yr of value to the Rams in McVay’s offense.

Well at this moment, things will be harder for Woods and Kupp and Gurley.

There’s less pressure on the defenses facing the Rams.

Windows will be tighter for Goff.

    One would think.

So at this moment one would think the Rams are maybe a bit better on Defense
and a maybe significantly worse on offense?

Wonder if it means they keep Tavon?

I doubt it simply because Tavon hasn’t shown he can be a true WR in the NFL. He’s no more of a replacement for Watkins than Johnny Hekker is at this point.

Well, that sucks. A rental for a premium draft pick. I was looking forward to watching him grow in this offense. And I don’t see this saving Austin with that big contract.

Still, the Rams have needs at LB first and foremost.

I’m so glad they didn’t sign him. I expect the rookies to take a step forward….so Kupp and Everret should be pretty good, Kupp might be awesome. Watkins seemed like a luxury item to me. I also expect Goff to improve.

I think we’ll be as good on offense as before. The second year in the same offense, I expect everyone to take a step forward.

Let’s get some linebackers and kick some ass.

They traded a lower 2nd round pick this year for a comp 3rd round pick next year to get Watkins services for last year.

I think we struggle to make the playoffs last year without Watkins and therefore believe it was worth the one year rental price to assist in building the winning culture.

For this year, given Kupp’s performance last year, I think Watkins is a nice to have, but not a need.

    Need is signing AD.

i’m not sure he’s in that tier. regardless he was their third most productive receiver on the team. too much money for your third receiver.

Jordy Nelson was released by the Packers today to drop $12.5 million from their cap, right after signing Jimmy Graham. Nelson would be a nice replacement for one or two years.

It would have been nice to be able to resign Watkins, but at least he did’nt sign with the 9ers who were reportedly interested in him.

i like josh reynolds. a lot. he could easily add another 20 pounds to his frame. and he’s not just tall. he’s got very good agility (4.13 short shuttle and a 6.83 3-cone). he’s explosive (37″ vertical 10’4″ broad).

and again. i think kupp gets better.

i could see them drafting another tight end this year. tyler conklin looks like a possibility in the later rounds. rams interviewed him at the senior bowl i believe. tested very well at the combine. very versatile.

i think i miss the second rounder more than i miss watkins to be honest.
