actually. one guy i completely forgot about. justin hollins.
he’s only 26. with wags here they don’t need him at inside backer. he can fully commit to playing edge. he’ll be playing for a contract. and he’s seen what edge rushers get playing on the same defense as ad.
not only that. he now has the luxury of playing next to another hall of famer in wags.
could he be the sleeper that emerges in 2022?

JUSTIN HOLLINS
OverviewThree-year starter with athletic ability and length teams look for from edge talent. Hollins has shown consistent growth as a prospect and flashes every-down potential at times, but his lack of consistent aggression and force could be a limiting factor. He should find special teams reps early on, but his future might very well be defined by his team’s ability to develop and unlock his capacity as a disruptive pass rusher.Strengths- Plays with plus athleticism and movement skills in both tight quarters and open field
- Possesses agility and looseness in both upper and lower body to be a slippery target
- Plays with eyes beyond initial block and into backfield
- Stick-and-move handwork allows him to punch and work around edge blockers
- Accelerates with adequate close-out range to challenge runners headed for the corner
- Can drop and and cover if asked to do so
- Hunts for football as pass rusher and has penchant for strip sacks
- Sudden inside move in pass rush could become dangerous weapon with more refinement
- Quality upfield get-off as pass rusher
- Unique “triple-jump” stride on third step upfield can propel him past kick-sliding tackles
Weaknesses- Needs more dog in his fight; doesn’t always play with aggressive demeanor teams look for
- Needs to confront and shed blockers at point of attack rather than riding on them
- Play strength is below average
- Has tendency to lose leverage when forced over top of blocker on backside squeeze versus run
- Will need to improve hand skill to more consistently grease the edge on edge rush
- Better upper-body turn at top of the rush arc could improve efficiency and tightness of path to quarterback
- Tends to disappear during stretches of the game
April 1, 2022 at 11:27 am #138080znModeratorThe Rams' biggest weakness on defense last year was the middle of the field. Teams exploited that area, but they just fixed it by signing Bobby Wagner https://t.co/oLVaKbYC9A

The @RamsNFL just significantly changed their defensive strategy. #MiddlePressures #RunStoppers #PowerAndSpeed….me: Both Miller and Wagner are great veteran leaders who won super bowls before the Rams, but beyond that they’re obviously very different animals. Miller has a great outside rush & BW has great instincts as an inside run defender & is good in coverage..IMO the defense is 2 different things w/ 1 or the other.April 1, 2022 at 2:40 pm #138089znModeratorBobby Wagner ➡️ LA Rams 🌴☀️

It was worth it, though, because the Rams got Isaiah Pead.

What did the Rams do when they realized they missed on Wagner? Pead.

Not even the GSOT. The league was awestruck with the GSOT, but this is different. It’s like “the Rams are in the news so we will of course now enthusiastically talk about the really smart things they did this week. You know like they did last week.” With Eisen, it’s not just Wagner and Donald that get mentioned but Snead too. It’s like “and the Rams did another smart and good thing. Of course.”

part of me wonders if this is all a push for the rams to succeed in the los angeles market. i mean the nfl really wants the rams to succeed in la.

That’s all true but it would not sound the same or have the same effect if the Rams weren’t actually pulling things off well.

yes. i agree.
April 2, 2022 at 3:06 pm #138116InvaderRamModeratorok. i’ve seen wags described as the greatest linebacker since ray lewis.
so i decided to see how ray lewis performed in his age 32 to age 36 seasons which are the years wags will be playing out with the rams. assuming he plays the entirety of the contract. obviously anything can happen and wags could decline sooner than we hope.
but it is possible for him to be very productive. and i gotta believe that this guy takes care of himself. also lewis’ age 32-36 seasons were actually his 12th through 16th seasons in the nfl. wags’ will be in his 11th through 15th seasons.
in that five year span, lewis made the pro bowl all five seasons. he was first team all pro twice and second team all pro once.
not bad. if wags takes care of his body and still has the hunger to go along with the vast amount of experience he’s accumulated over those ten years. and with a little bit of luck i think three more years is doable.
he’ll be playing alongside donald who is probably still near his prime years or not too far off. lewis during those years was playing behind a young haloti ngata who was regularly making first and second team all pro during those years. suggs was a very young 25 and just coming into his own (he won dpoy at the very end of that stretch – 2011). and of course ed reed who was right in the middle of his prime years.
ramsey is right in the middle of his prime years. he’s made first team all pro the last two seasons and i see no reason why he wouldn’t continue to be his dominant self for at least a couple more years.
it’d still be helpful obviously if the rams had more edge talent. i like floyd, but i don’t consider him the caliber of a terrell suggs. maybe they make a trade for hunter. hahaha.
seriously though. if they can find an edge rusher either from within or through the draft or maybe even sign someone like clowney, wags and this defense could be something else.
an aside note ed reed, ray lewis, and terrell suggs have four defensive player of the year awards between them. crazy. of course donald has three himself. ha!
April 2, 2022 at 3:09 pm #138117ZooeyModeratorPart of that comes from the fact that ESPN has studios in LA. Eisen and Cowherd (by far their two best yakkers, imo) live and work in Los Angeles. They are going to know more about the Rams than they know about the Titans, especially the off-the-field stuff.
And of course the NFL wants the Rams to succeed in Los Angeles. This goes back to whatever I said about Kroenke’s vision right after the Super Bowl. The NFL decided to ride Kroenke’s vision back into LA. That was exceedingly clear when they were determining which team was going to go to LA. That was never not going to be the Rams. Kroenke had the developer experience, the property, and the pockets to do this. He built an incredible entertainment facility that includes not only a spectacular stadium, but studios for the NFL pregame stuff, and I think he had plans for a Hall of Fame West Coast Edition. There is a big theatre there for hosting events like the Oscars, etc. as well. He didn’t just offer the NFL a fancy stadium. He offered the NFL a glamorous complex, the kind of sexy that Los Angeles is known for. LA doesn’t even know what it has yet, in the Rams, but they will in time.
So, yeah, the NFL has a stake in the outcome of all this, and Kroenke deserves credit for hiring the right people to bring a championship to LA. Not only has he done that – and done it spectacularly with stars, the Rams are now threatening to emerge as the model franchise for the league. Both the Cowboys and Patriots should be looking in their rear view mirrors. The Rams are a threat to become the most valuable team in sports, imo. They have arguable already changed the team building model. Eisen and Cowherd recognize the Rams for what they are, even if the rest of the country is slow to catch on. These guys are not duped into believing the Rams “bought” a championship, a concept that doesn’t even make sense in the NFL which has a hard salary cap. They see bold, decisive moves that have worked, and they give credit where credit is due.

All true.
I still loathe him with every sub-atomic commie-particle in my brain.
As well as Georgia, Carroll Rosenbloom, and every other billionaire
on the planet.
The NFL should be nationalized, and all the owners beheaded.
And the Rams Uniforms should be blue and white, and the National
flag should be blue and white with a rams horn.
I could go on.

That was smart. Good idea.
I honestly think BW makes this defense something fairly different from what most of us expected. (A good version of different.) It may be that they have to scheme up a pass rush and blitz more than we’re used to.
We’ve all seen the games and the frustrating times when a short pass/run combo would just work against them. I don’t think it will be that defense anymore.

Yeah there are so many good reasons for this signing. One is, the very thing I complained about with the Rams defense sometimes was sorely evident in 2 of their 3 games against SF last year. And Wagner knows the 9ers.April 2, 2022 at 5:16 pm #138128InvaderRamModeratorI honestly think BW makes this defense something fairly different from what most of us expected. yeah. i agree.
and if they can find a legit stud pass rusher (easy of course right? haha), this defense would be spectacular. like all-time i’m thinking… if they can find a legit stud pass rusher to pair with donald.

I also agree with everything that has been said here.
I will add that Wagner/Jones is turns the Rams defensive weakness into a significant strength. And while a legit stud pass rusher would make this defense spectacular, I don’t think they “need” one to be a top tier defense. A decent guy will probably do.
I think their biggest need now is CB and secondary depth.
