Tonight’s victory clinched the Rams’ fourth-straight season with a winning record under Sean McVay.

    Jalen Ramsey@jalenramsey
I’m so happy for all my dawgs forreal! These guys been playing very well when they opportunity comes! S/o to y’all! (It’s too many to name lol)

    What a blessing Folded hands

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
Cam Akers rushed for 171 yards and 5.9YPC, Sean McVay went for it on fourth down (and got it) twice on a 10-minute statement drive, the Rams had 6 sacks and a pick-6 and Brandon Staley’s defense held the Pats to 3 points on his birthday.

DL Michael Brockers: “We don’t play for ourselves, we play for one another…we genuinely love and like each other…We truly enjoy football, it’s not just picking up a check.”

Kenny Young adds it’s a vibe he’s never felt on a team. “It’s special…this year feels different.”

Aaron Donald now leads the NFL in sacks after notching his 13th, and second of the night. Official stats might pull him back to 12.5 but that’s still good for the lead.

    Lindsey Thiry@LindseyThiry
Aaron Donald has 84.5 career sacks, already fourth-most in a players’ first 7 seasons since sacks became official in 1982, per @ESPNStatsInfo

    Dan Orlovsky@danorlovsky7
The @RamsNFL have the best blocking WR group in the #NFL

    Sam Monson@PFF_Sam
The problem with having zero receivers is the same as the problem with having a disastrous OL.

It starts off being THE problem, but the longer it lasts the more it breaks other things, causing other problems (usually the QB).

NE’s lack of WRs is breaking Cam Newton’s process.

    Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
Kenny Young: “This year feels different. It feels different. You can tell.”

Talked about how everyone – coaches and players – come together to work and improve every day

    Gary Klein@LATimesklein
@LATimesfarmer: “It wasn’t as if Sean McVay, young grasshopper, snatched a pebble from the hand of NFL master Bill Belichick. It was just two teams heading in opposite directions.”

    Sarina@sarina
There is a lot of love on each side of the ball for this Rams team. Michael Brockers, who finished the game with two sacks said postgame, “I’m a fan for the oline. The oline does a hell of a job blocking… they [are] in the weight room every week, and they put in the work.”

#Patriots’ offensive performance during 24-3 loss to #Rams was their worst in 374 games under coach Bill Belichick.

    Offensive EPA was -27.5

Previous low: -24.4 vs #Ravens in WC game after ’10 season, then -22.8 vs #Bills in famous ’03 Lawyer Milloy game.

Cooper Kupp had the most run block win rate plays by a WR in the NFL this season with 111. His 81 run block wins are most by a WR this season.

His teammate Robert Woods is 2nd among WR with 83.

We’re living in an era where Aaron Donald should be the DPOY every year. Others are deserving, of course, but play in and play out, there is no comparison – and it’s been that way for a few years now.

    Andrew Siciliano@AndrewSiciliano
Jared Goff now has the same number of rushing TD (4) as Lamar Jackson.

    Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
Last night was just the 11th time since 2010 the Rams had more rushing yards than passing yards and won.

Five of those games have come in McVay’s tenure since 2017

Sean McVay threw the Pats a curveball last night with a heavy dose of 12 personnel. Higbee and Everett both played more than all of the Rams’ WRs – the first time that’s ever happened, from what I can tell.

Aaron Donald needs 13 more sacks to topple Sapp’s career sacks and he’s *checks notes* 90 games AHEAD of him

    PFF@PFF
Jalen Ramsey in coverage vs. Patriots:
    30 snaps
1 REC allowed for 6 yards

    Dan Orlovsky@danorlovsky7
The @packers better hope they don’t see the @RamsNFL in playoffs….not a good matchup for their defense

    J.B. Long@JB_Long
Notable PFF grades from last night’s @RamsNFL win:

    Aaron Donald 89.9′
    Kenny Young 88.7^
    Samson Ebukam 87.7+
    Troy Hill 86.0
    Troy Reeder 80.4*
    Jared Goff 78.7
    John Johnson 75.2
    Cam Akers 73.2*

    *Career-high
    ^Best as a Ram
    +Season-high
‘Because you can’t grade him 90+ every week

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Sean McVay on what he saw from Aaron Donald on Kenny Young’s pick-six:

“That’s my favorite play of the game because you see two of the best players in the world (in Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey) out in front blocking for him.”

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Rams HC Sean McVay: “The advantage that (Vice President of Sports Medicine and Performance) Reggie Scott and our performance staff give us, I thought that showed up in a really big way.”

McVay said injury-wise, the team came out of last night’s game clean.

On signing LS Colin Holba to the practice squad, Rams HC Sean McVay said it was done as a COVID contingency plan in case anything were to happen to Jake McQuaide, given they didn’t have anyone backing up McQuaide. McQuaide was consulted with on the decision.

    Lindsey Thiry@LindseyThiry
The Rams have a 35.6% chance of making the conference championship…. A 16.5% chance of appearing in the Super Bowl… And a 7.6% chance of winning the Super Bowl, according to ESPN’s FPI.

The chance of a LA title trifecta – Lakers, Dodgers, Rams – is improving.

    Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
This is a really interesting development for the Rams. Reeder has played well and emerged as what seems to be the better option at ILB

Running the ball is not really about smoke and mirrors. Everyone runs the same stuff and when someone does something new (like McVay’s jet sweep threat tied in consistently) other teams copy it.

When you run the ball it really is about your guys beating the guys in front of them. Even in zone you have to prevent the penetration and string guys down the line. And last night the Rams were winning all across the formation. That was not scheme by any stretch it was good basic execution and a back who took full advantage with great suddenness.

If we do run the ball well Goff is more than capable of complementing that all the way to a championship. So our hopes of a championship IMO lie primarily in our ability to keep Akers rolling and to have him and Hendy both adding some complexity in the pass game on top of occasionally flipping the field for us with big gainers. What happens if those guys get going is suddenly you won’t want to flood the field with constant dime packages, and all of a sudden our excellent possession wideouts are separating because they’re not seeing bracketed coverages.

With Reeder playing so well lately, will Kiser get his job back when he comes back from injury? PFF Rating: Reeder- 69 Kiser- 39

    Dick84

    Troy Reeder

Honestly, the last 2 games, it looks like the light has come on, full strength. He has decent athleticism.. but looked slow a lot because he was lost, imo. Now? Seems he knows what/where he’s supposed to be.. .and is getting it done, often in violent fashion. He’s made more impact in the last two games than I can remember Kiser making… and I’m probably a Kiser apologist. Reeder’s PFF grade, fwiw, is much, much better than Kiser. I don’t know if it’s just a matchup thing with the last two teams they took on… or if it’s more than that. But.. wow… good job

I did not think Reeder had this high a level of NFL performance in him.

I liked the Akers pick. He had nothing at Free Shoes U. No OL, no Qb, no anything. It was him gameplanned against week in and week out, he didn’t quit, complain or half-ass it. He flat out worked and dominated. He would have been a 1st rounder for Alabama or OSU or Oklahoma. (That’s a fact if facts were things I couldn’t prove to be facts.)

Akers has bellcow size and elite wiggle with HR speed. Not many RBs can claim they have all 3…And he has vision and patience.

And he can thread the needle. He had to at FSU otherwise he was going nowhere. It’s impressive for a thicker back like Akers to get small.

Rams had 4 winning seasons in a row from 83-86. Coach, Robinson; qbs, Ferragamo, Kemp, Brock, and Everett.

So it’s since 86 or 34 years ago.

The Rams say they have placed OLB Jachai Polite on the reserve/COVID list. Polite was waived but then re-signed last week to the practice squad.

Don’t look now but @RamsNFL @ABlythe63 is the sixth-ranked center in the @NFL per @PFF. Rams offensive line began getting turned around last year when he moved from guard to his natural position of center.

How to rebuild an offensive line: Austin Corbett, who the @Rams stole from the @Browns for a 5th round pick last October, is @PFF 12th ranked guard. David Edwards, who the Rams picked in the 5th round in 2019, is the 19th ranked guard.

You can’t always throw big money and high draft picks at problems. Drafting and developing and finding value where others can’t see it (Blythe, who the Colts cut and Corbett, who the Browns gave up on) is as important as the “big” moves.

.@RamsNFL offensive line coach Aaron Kromer was front and center in the identification/development of all three players. One of the best in the @NFL

    from https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2020/12/13/rams-12-personnel-sean-mcvay-offense/

In the last two weeks, the Rams have actually used 12 personnel more than any other package. According to Next Gen Stats, the Rams have had one running back, two tight ends and two receivers on the field 59% of the time, which ranks highest in the NFL.

“I think it’s added another layer to our offense that’s important,” McVay said last week. “That was something that we wanted to be intentional about this offseason. I think Coach (Aaron) Kromer, our coaches and then it all goes back to the players’ execution. It’s big because when you play against some of these bigger defenses, where they’ve got some heavy edges, being able to have seven true bodies committed to the blocking surface gives you a little bit more versatility in what you can activate in the run game, as opposed to when you’re just in your three-receiver sets. For us, we want to make sure that we’re able to be as multiple as we can, kind of try to continue to try to apply pressure to the defense based on what they’re giving us. The last two weeks has definitely been reflective of that and really a lot of credit to the players.”

Saints lose. The Rams are now one game behind Green Bay and New Orleans for the #1 seed. The Saints play the Chiefs next week. Green Bay plays Carolina. Rams get the Jets.
