One thing that needs to be said: Faced with losing his job, Jared Goff came off the bench, weeks after surgery and played very well in two playoff games this month.

Matthew Stafford has had a 100-yard rusher on his team in 11 games in his career.

    HIS CAREER.

    He has started 166 games.

He is going to love Cam Akers.

The @Rams are the NFC favorites next year.

Matthew Stafford leaves a #Lions team with the worst-ranked defense in the NFL for a #Rams team that finished first in fewest points and yards allowed.

So in the last 10 months, Sean McVay has wanted to unload RB Todd Gurley, WR Brandin Cooks and QB Jared Goff in the name of improving the offense, which has played inconsistently since Super Bowl LIII.

If the offense doesn’t improve in 2021, is that *now* on Sean McVay

If you guys thought I talked too much about Robert Woods as it is, just wait until you see him with Stafford throwing the ball.

I’m going to be OBNOXIOUS about him next season.

    Peter Schrager@PSchrags
    Spoke to McVay this AM.

He and Stafford have been friendly for some time now, due to an unlikely connection.

Buffalo WR coach Chad Hall and McVay were great competitors/friends and QBs at rival high schools in ATL.

    Chad’s sister…Kelly…is, naturally, Matt Stafford’s wife.

Is it fair to say that Sean McVay falls out of love quickly with his stars based on how his track record with Jared Goff and Todd Gurley?? Something to consider… Love ‘em and leave ‘em in LA

it’s more about the pattern of falling in and out of love with his stars quickly. Much like Jon Gruden has done in the past. It’s something to watch going forward. If his players can’t make the Xs and Os pop like in his mind, he moves on w/o acknowledgment of his own flaws

Everyone in the league has an ego. I think McVay’s treatment of his stars should be discussed. Like most coaches, he values his system and think it “creates” stars… There’s a fine line, though. Great players make schemes pop. He needs to keep that in mind. #Rams #NFL

It’s always a slippery slope when the coach accepts the credit for the wins but pins the losses or underachievement on the players. Being anointed as the ultimate offensive guru can lead to a level of arrogance that goes unchecked. McVay toes the line at times.

    Seth Wickersham@SethWickersham
In the Super Bowl, Jared Goff twice hit Brandin Cooks in the hands in the end zone. One was late and broken up, another was perfect and should have been caught, but both were mere inches from being touchdowns, changing lives and legacies. The line in the NFL is so thin.

On the ‘falling out of love with his stars’ thing.

Todd Gurley had a 3.5 yard rushing average for the Falcons.
    Gained less than 700 yards.

I dont think McVay ‘fell out of love’ with Todd.
I think Todd hurt his knee.

And Cooks had like 6 concussions and his production dropped way off.

yeah. i love gurley. but it was the right decision. if i had to criticize mcvay, it’s that he used gurley too much.

but falling out of love? i’m not buying it.

now that’s not to say that i agree with him on goff. we’ll see. but it’s possible that mcvay and snead were right to trade him. it’s gonna be a long 7 months.

Wonder if Matt Stafford can play the run? Didn’t the Packers just run for 188 against the Rams a few weeks ago? I know Donald was hurt, but it was bad. Three players now control $70-million of the cap for the Rams. Star power is good. But roster building a lot harder now.

I love Stafford as a quarterback. His gunslinger ways will be fun, but there is no doubt that this is a team selling the future for now and the now has a lot of questions as well.

    Adam Schefter@AdamSchefter
Stafford wanted to be with Sean McVay. He didn’t want WSH, DEN, CAR, etc. Detroit wanted to work with Stafford and accommodate him. McVay had to call owner Stan Kroenke and tell him they had to up their offer. And then it happened. Everyone happy.

    Michael Giardi@MikeGiardi
Source says that yes, the #Patriots inquired about Matthew Stafford. How far it went beyond that was not made clear to me at this time. At that price, I can’t imagine the Pats stayed in for long.

    Mike Garafolo@MikeGarafolo
The #Texans have agreed to terms on a deal with Lovie Smith to make him David Culley’s defensive defensive coordinator, source says. Smith is back in the NFL and will be calling the plays for Houston.

from Lions hire Anthony Lynn as offensive coordinator: https://www.detroitlions.com/news/lions-hire-anthony-lynn-as-offensive-coordinator

Allen Park, Mich. – The Detroit Lions announced today that Anthony Lynn has been named the team’s new offensive coordinator. Additional contract terms were not disclosed.

Lynn comes to the Lions after most recently serving as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers for the past four seasons (2017-20). Prior to leading the Chargers coaching staff, Lynn coached for the Buffalo Bills from 2014-16, as the assistant head coach, in addition to coaching the running backs and serving as the team’s offensive coordinator for 14 games in 2016. He concluded the 2016 season as the interim head coach for the Bills. Lynn began his coaching career with Denver Broncos in 2000, after playing running back for the Broncos (1993-1994, 1997-99) and San Francisco 49ers (1995-96).

from PFF: Ranking the most productive 2020 NFL rookie draft classes 1-32

    https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-most-productive-2020-rookie-draft-classes

    11. Los Angeles Rams

Why they’re ranked here: Despite the Rams having nine picks in the 2020 draft, their rookies played the fifth-fewest combined snaps among NFL teams. The group logged just over 1,400 total snaps in the regular season. And over half of those snaps played came courtesy of sixth-round safety Jordan Fuller, who generated twice as much PFF WAR as the rest of Los Angeles’ rookie class combined.

How their top pick fared: Cam Akers, the 52nd overall pick, had his two best games of the season from a grading standpoint in the playoffs. Against Seattle in the wild-card round and Green Bay in the divisional round, Akers earned rushing grades of 72.7 and 88.1, respectively. Including those postseason games, he finished with a 77.6 rushing grade that ranked 22nd out of 60 qualifying running backs. That’s not a bad mark, but he still didn’t generate a significant amount of value for the Rams, especially considering where he was drafted.

Best value pick: Los Angeles grabbed Ohio State safety Fuller with the 199th pick, and he ended up playing more and better than any of the Rams’ other first-year players. Fuller logged over 700 snaps and ended up finishing as the 16th-most-valuable rookie of the 2020 season, per PFF WAR.

    ROUND/PICK NAME POS COLLEGE
2/52 Cam Akers RB Florida State
    2/57 Van Jefferson WR Florida
    3/84 Terrell Lewis OLB Alabama
    3/104 Terrell Burgess S Utah
    4/136 Brycen Hopkins TE Purdue
6/199 Jordan Fuller S Ohio State
    7/234 Clay Johnston ILB Baylor
7/248 Sam Sloman K Miami (OH)
    7/250 Tremayne Anchrum G Clemson

Um, what? That is an F’d up rating-system
if they think Cam Akers didnt generate a significant amount of value.

Rams now have over $40 million in cap space going to QBs this year. The cap numbers for Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey will be just over $50 million combined.

That’s more than half the expected cap number for LA’s entire team in 2021 for just 3 guys, plus 1 who will play for DET

    NFL Update@MySportsUpdate
Another wrinkle in the Matthew Stafford trade: At one point on Saturday, the #Lions and #Panthers were so close that Carolina was in the process of obtaining Stafford’s medicals from Detroit, per @AlbertBreer. The #Rams came in with a more aggressive offer, and that got it done.

    Bucky Brooks@BuckyBrooks
The hit rate on 1st round picks is around 50%, per an annual study from @CharleyCasserly. The #Rams are opting for the sure thing over the unproven commodity. Time will tell if their gambles are correct but I’m not mad at them for daring to be different

    Torrey Smith@TorreySmithWR
Let me give you some advice. If you are having a conversation with someone about Matthew Stafford’s talent and they say he sucks, stop the conversation and don’t talk to that person about football ever again.

Was told by very good sources #Rams were frustrated at Goff’s lack of work ethic, football IQ, mobility, accountability and he simply wouldn’t take chances on explosive plays. Locker room respected Wolford more.

    Joe Curley@vcsjoecurley
This doesn’t sound like the Jared Goff we’ve known for nearly five years. More importantly, how do the Rams give $134 million to a player who lacks “work ethic, football IQ… (and) accountability?” That seems like a really bad decision that isn’t getting enough attention.

Goff made more downfield throws in that Saints game highlight reel than he made all season, though. And that’s what I still want an explanation for.

Anybody have one of those “spray charts,” or whatever they are, that show a field with all the dots for passes thrown? I’d like to see one from this year compared to one from previous years.
