    from https://www.turfshowtimes.com/2020/9/21/21449115/rams-team-stats-offense-jared-goff-defense-aaron-donald

    Pass Defense – 62.2-percent completions, 486 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT, 6.2 Y/A, 5.7 NY/A, 4.9 ANY/A, 3 sacks, 73.6 rating.

Brandon Staley’s pass defense ranks eighth in completion percentage allowed and they are one of two teams (along with Staley’s old team in Chicago) who have only given up one passing touchdown through two games.

That’s led to the 73.6 passer rating allowed, second-best in the NFL and only a tiny fraction behind the Bears. They’ve posted nine passes defensed, tied for ninth-most in the league.

Eye-popping NextGen Stat: Talk about a lockdown cornerback. Wentz stayed far away from Jalen Ramsey in the first half. Ramsey played every snap, but was not the nearest defender to any targeted receiver, according to Next Gen Stats. Ramsey finished with one tackle and was only targeted twice. The Eagles did not complete either pass. Ramsey lined up opposite DeSean Jackson and Jalen Reagor more often than anyone else.

Blake Bortles is signing a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos this week, per source. Should be finalized this week.

Don’t worry that the Rams got 0 sacks against the Eagles when Washington got 8. The majority of Washington’s sacks came from Wentz not feeling pressure, not getting the ball out and trying to do too much. He did this far less against the Rams.

Under-the-radar fantasy standout: TE Tyler Higbee

Higbee finished 2019 on a hot streak, accumulating 522 receiving yards over the final five games, though he wasn’t necessarily a go-to end zone target for Jared Goff, catching only two touchdown passes in that span. But after the Rams dominated the Eagles thanks to three touchdown receptions by Higbee — equaling his total touchdowns from the entire 2019 season — look for Goff to find the 6-foot-6, 255-pound tight end near the goal line more often. — Lindsey Thiry

I think I might want that Spanish feed.

Actually, Spielman was pretty good. Not great, but he didn’t make my ears bleed.

But there are times I think that Spanish feed would be a significant upgrade.

Micah Kiser played 1 snap in 2019, but has come out of the gates in 2020 with a massive spark to the defense. Through 2 games, Kiser has:

    – 20 Solo Tackles (T-1st)
    – 13 Defensive Stops (T-2nd)
    – 2 Pass Breakups
    – 1 Forced Fumble

    Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
I know it’s early, but Rams RBs are being targeted on 4.1% more of Goff’s pass attempts than they were last year.

    from https://www.turfshowtimes.com/2020/9/22/21451417/rams-advanced-stats-jalen-ramsey-eagles-micah-kiser-missed-tackles

According to PFR, Ramsey was targeted five times, allowing one catch for three yards. That would mean that Ramsey has given up 84 yards on 16 throws in his direction this season, if you believe PFR, which is as good as you’d expect from him.

Goff has the fourth-most “pocket time” to start the year at 2.6 seconds and he’s number two in play action passing attempts.

By just about every metric, the Rams’ pass rush has been one of the worst in the NFL.

It’s the biggest question on what’s been an otherwise stout defense.

    ESPN’s pass rush win rate: 30th (32%)
    PFR pressure rate: 26th (15.7%)
    PFR hurry rate: 28th (4.5%)
    Total presures: 11th-fewest (14)
    Sacks: 10th-fewest (3)

It’s early, but the pass rush has to be better

Sean McVay says they will probably place LG Joe Noteboom on injured reserve.

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Rams DC Brandon Staley says CB Jalen Ramsey is “absolutely” a leader of the defense. Starts with his mind, and he’s also done a great job of bringing young players along. Staley says Ramsey realizes teammates are leaning on him as more than a shutdown corner.

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
This is interesting, per Robert Woods: Not only does Jalen Ramsey study the receivers around the league that he may match up against…he also studies all of the corners and works with Rams receivers on certain techniques to use against them.

Good to see DT A’Shawn Robinson out here working on the side after the start of camp, when doctors found a cardiovascular issue that put him on the NFI list (eligible to return). He can’t be cleared to play for a few weeks but will be working to get back up into football shape.

Son of an English teacher and Rams DC Brandon Staley, on how the defense must aggravate Josh Allen out of sound decision-making: “We gotta make it more like New York City traffic than a trip on I-90 in Upstate New York. It’s gotta be more stressful for him.”

    Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
Jared Goff was #bad on play-action passes last season.

This year, he’s been really #good

offensive scoring is the highest it’s ever been through the first two weeks of a season with teams scoring an average of 2.8 tds and 24.8 offensive points per game… penalties per game are down and 3rd down conversion rate is up which no doubt contributes to the increase in offensive production

pass yards per completed pass has declined over the years which no doubt reflects the increase in the short passing game in lieu of runs, and most likely also contributes to increased scoring and offensive production

    from PFF: https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-week-2-pff-team-of-the-week-key-takeaways-weekly-awards-and-more

THE LOS ANGELES RAMS LOOK LIKE THEY ARE BACK IN CONTENTION STATUS

After Sean McVay took the NFL by storm and led the Rams to a Super Bowl appearance in 2018, everything and everyone took a big step backward in 2019. But after yesterday’s win against Philadelphia, it looks as though Los Angeles Rams are back in contention status. The Rams had the most efficient offense of Week 2 from an EPA per play standpoint, and Jared Goff was out there delivering from a clean pocket. Goff generated a 95.8 passing grade from a clean pocket, the best grade of the week, and he completed 16 of 17 passes for 230 yards and two scores. Through two weeks of play, Goff is now third in the NFL in passing grade (86.1) and second in the rate of uncatchable passes thrown (10%).

What a beautifully designed play-action pass.

Against Philly, Goff had numerous open downfield throws thanks to great play design, like the one above. That helped him record the third-best positively graded throw rate of the week, which is a metric influenced partly by supporting cast and playcalling. If we see the Rams execute like this the rest of the year, the NFC better watch out.

Rams have a top-ranked second half defense

Through two games, the Rams have allowed six points in the second half, one field goal in each week.

The Cowboys second half drives went: Punt, Punt, Field Goal, Downs, Punt, Downs

The Eagles second half drives went: Interception, Field Goal, Downs, Interception

Joe Noteboom has officially landed on IR and will miss at least 3 weeks.

Rams DT Aaron Donald, who incidentally has never missed a bus in his life, remarked drily today: “Don’t pay me any attention. You ain’t gotta slide, you ain’t gotta double-team me, nothin’. Let’s all play football fair, one-on-one…I’m just a guy.”

    Lindsey Thiry@LindseyThiry
“I’m just a guy, you don’t have to worry about me,” Aaron Donald says, reacting to some comments coming out of Buffalo. Donald adds that he’s never missed a bus. He’s always early.

Sean McVay says RB Cam Akers (Ribs) isn’t coming along as quickly as he anticipated in regard to recovering from his injury

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Rams HC Sean McVay on whether rookie OLB Terrell Lewis will return from IR next week (Sunday will be third of three games missed-threshold for him to be eligible to return):

“I don’t know that yet. We’ll wait and see. He’s progressing well.”

As for DL A’Shawn Robinson, he remains on the six-week minimum eligibility for return.

    BTHRams@BTH_Rams
Eager to see how it develops over the course of the season, but the early returns from #Rams first-year DC Brandon Staley is an extremely low blitz rate

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
The Rams are one of just 2 teams who have allowed a single passing TD this season (other one is Chicago, former home of a one Brandon Staley); have also allowed just 283 air yards from opposing offenses through their two games.

    seth galina@pff_seth
Jared Goff has the least amount of non-play action dropbacks this season with only 35 (only team under 40) and has by far the lowest average time to throw (2.09). There have been 20 quarterbacks with more non-PA dropbacks in a single week so far than Goff in 2 weeks

No QB is more dangerous from a clean pocket than Aaron Rodgers

Through two weeks of play, Goff is now third in the NFL in passing grade (86.1) and second in the rate of uncatchable passes thrown (10%).

wow. just wow. i don’t watch other football games too much, so it’s nice to see some comparisons.

just behind rodgers and ahead of brady with a clean pocket??? third in overall passing grade? he’s also fourth in ypa.

still too early in the season, but i hope it continues.

I’d like to see Goff’s numbers compared to other QBs under pressure. Because Goff’s numbers do drop off a lot under pressure. Is his dropoff worse than other QBs? Or is it about the same? His numbers do drop a lot, though.

Never been a better time to play QB in the NFL. No fans, no noise, no juice & offenses flourishing league-wide

Week 2 saw the 2nd most TD’s scored in a single week of play all-time. 98 touchdowns were scored Week 2, trailing only Week 14 of 2013 (104) on the TD leaderboard.

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Rams fourth-year S John Johnson III on rookie Jordan Fuller:

“It doesn’t feel like he’s a rookie. He came right in ready to go. I mean, that’s just a testament, I guess, to Ohio State and how they build up their players.”

    Sarina@sarina
    Van Jefferson on Jalen Ramsey:
“I knew going up against him every day of practice was only going to get me better. [Jalen] reaching out, coming to me during practice, telling me I need to get better, that means a lot to me… I think he’s one of the best teammates I’ve had.”
