Rams’ pass rush had its worst game since 2016 vs. 49ersThe Rams pressured Jimmy Garoppolo twice on 33 dropbacks.
Both of those were by Aaron Donald.

I get solace knowing the Rams essentially just beat themselves. Left a lot of potentially game-changing plays out there (Kupp TD, Kupp long ball). The Rams had ONE single defender with a negative average depth of tackle, per @PFF. Of course, it’s ELITE run-stuffer Leonard Floyd (-0.25). He’s so damn good at it.
Lindsey Thiry@LindseyThiry
Jared Goff was 19-of-38 for 198 yards and 2 touchdowns, with an interception, in 24-16 loss to the 49ers. “Clearly wasn’t my best,” Goff said. “Uncharacteristic stuff, missing some guys open there early. Something that I’ve never done in my life and don’t expect to repeat.”Jared Goff on NFC West: “We’re in the best division in football. There’s a reason for it, these guys are good, Arizona is good, Seattle is obviously undefeated. We’re a great team. Every time you play in this division it’s going to be a tough game. We know that coming in.”
RB Darrell Henderson was very effective when the Rams handed him the ball. Henderson rushed for 88 yards on 14 carries, averaging 6.3 yards per run.
Now this is an eye-popping stat: Cooper Kupp’s drop in the end zone just before the interception is the Rams first drop in the end zone since Week 5, 2017, per @ESPNStatsInfo
Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
LT Andrew Whitworth: “It wasn’t so much of what they were doing so much as we just kept hurting ourselves.”Josh Reynolds, who has quietly been having a really solid year for the Rams, made the loudest play of the night for a touchdown.
The adjustments on defense have overall been solid. Unfortunately we have seen that halftime is too late to make them – or, and in this case, lack of complement on the offensive side.
In my humble opinion, Nsimba Webster has thus far made his case to stay as the lead PR/KR. Just looks real sure of himself out there.
October 19, 2020 at 10:27 am #123204nittany ramModeratorI don’t know that I agree with the “hurting ourselves“ excuse as the reason for the loss. That sorta implies SF had nothing to do with it.
SF whipped our front 7. Completely dominated them. I think our front 7 is a weakness overall. The Rams don’t have much outside of Donald on the DL and the LBs are journeymen.
From the start McVay went away from what made the Rams offense successful this season. He wanted to spread the 9ers defense out and pick on their secondary instead of doing what they’ve had so much success with this season – Using a balanced run/pass approach with short passing, play action, roll outs, etc.
McVay can be his worst enemy in that he often out thinks himself. I think he did that last night.
Shanahan on the other hand new exactly how to neutralize Donald and exploit the weaknesses of the Rams defense.

on the end zone INT
Woods and Reynolds were close to each other in the corner of the end zone. Verrett was able to come off Woods and intercept the ball. Maybe if they’re spaced out a bit more the ball isn’t picked off.
That couldn’t have been the play design.

Just finished Rams offense. Not all bad. LB Fred Warner was everywhere first half. Robert Saleh basically dared Goff to run with the front alinement and pass coverage. (like sagging in the paint & giving a big the 3 ptr in basketball). Too many missed opportunities in key spots.Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
Sean McVay rarely puts blame on his players after a loss. But it was refreshing to hear him do it last night, because there really were a lot of mistakes and missed opportunities on the fieldJ.B. Long@JB_Long
Takeaways from Wk6 PFF grades for Rams:Hill season-high 79.0
Floyd strong vs run but dinged for tackling, coverage
Hollins (35) & Samson (21) snaps outpacing Lewis (9)
Whit highest on offense 84.3Donald, Ramsey Higbee, Henderson, Havenstein, Blythe also receive high marks.

Rams LB Micah Kiser on the mood around the facility following Sunday night’s loss: “Guys are pretty disappointed, but that means you care. We’re a close team, guys are all bought-in. Just ready to get back to work and get after the Bears on Monday night.”Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
Rams defense by half1st half: 88 points (9th-worst)
2nd half: 26 points (best in NFL)The defense was once again great in the second half against the 49ers, but they can’t keep relying on halftime adjustments
PFF LA Rams@PFF_Rams
“The Rams had only one player net over 50 receiving yards, and that was tight end Tyler Higbee. A key reason for Goff’s inability to connect with his wide receivers was the emergence of 49ers’ cornerback Jason Verrett.”October 19, 2020 at 9:18 pm #123219znModeratorSosa K@QBsMVP
I thought it was arguably the best I’ve ever seen from Goff under pressure. He was avoiding would-be sackers and throwing darts at a better rate than I think I’ve ever seen in his career, even if those passes were dropped/incompletions.==
I'm sure you're all seeing something I'm not. But after watching that back, I came away impressed with Jared Goff's Week 6.
Jotting down notes, far more positives than negatives. Wasn't under a ton of duress, but when he was, handled it with poise. Agree to disagree, I guess? pic.twitter.com/Wizd5GbnOt

Did the defense suck last night? Sure, but they also have us 4 straight 3 and outs to start the second half – we drove down and penalized ourself into FG, dropped TDS, and dropped passes. This is on the offense, the players, not McVay.Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
Consistent theme from Rams HC Sean McVay tonight: “We are capable of playing at a much higher level – and we expect to.”Per NFL Next Gen Stats, Darrell Henderson ran against a stacked box on 42.9% of his carries against the San Francisco 49ers on SNF. He had 88 yards on 14 carries (6.3 YPC) – and attained 19 yards over expectation, per the analytics measurement standard.
Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Regarding injuries, Rams HC Sean McVay said “we actually came out pretty clean” from 49ers game.Typical bumps and bruises but nothing concerning.

PFF DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
CB Jason Verrett, San Francisco 49ersVerrett has had one of the most unfortunate starts to an NFL career that the world has ever seen. He showed some promise in a limited rookie campaign in 2014 with the Chargers, earning an 85.1 PFF grade on 223 coverage snaps, then came out in Year 2 and was the league’s second-highest-graded corner. He then played in just four games in that next season due to a torn ACL and would go on to play just 67 snaps from 2017 to 2019 due to injuries. We have finally gotten a healthy Verrett these last few weeks and last night against the Rams, he looked like his 2015 self. The cornerback produced a 94.0 PFF grade for the game. He did not allow a single catch on his three targets in coverage, recorded an interception and forced two incompletions.

Starting to turn toward Week 7, one of the great narratives is that you’ve two teams who have quite a bit of evidence of “paper tiger” criticisms between the Rams beating up on the NFC East and Chicago winning their first three games by 12 total points over DET, NYG & ATL.October 20, 2020 at 4:00 pm #123245AgamemnonParticipantOctober 21, 2020 at 10:32 am #123264znModeratorCameron DaSilva@camdasilva
Darrell Henderson is facing loaded boxes more than most running backs, yet he’s still thriving.According to Next Gen Stats, Henderson has run against eight-plus defenders in the box 27.78% of the time. That’s the fourth-highest rate in the NFL…. For comparison, Todd Gurley faced loaded boxes only 7.81% of the time in 2018 and 16.85% in 2017 – both third-lowest in the league.

11. Jared Goff, Los Angeles Rams
Change: Up 6Goff is a very environment-dependent quarterback, but we shouldn’t dismiss how well he does play when the environmental conditions allow him to. Through six weeks, he has the No. 6 PFF passing grade (84.3) and No. 5 overall mark (85.3) and has just three turnover-worthy plays, the same number as Aaron Rodgers had in only one game against Tampa Bay. Goff’s offensive line has improved, so he is better able to deliver the ball to Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods, and while he hasn’t been as aggressive as in the past, he has been impressively efficient, with the Rams ranking sixth in the league in EPA per play on offense.

There were a lot of “almosts” in the Rams’ run plays vs SF. Lot of plays that could have gone for really nice yardage had one guy not whiffed on his assignment. Some of it was technique too IMO, especially on the zone runs with reach blocks. This OL is good enough to sustain a strong run game I believe. The talent is there now, just gotta polish it up and get your two best backs in there for the majority of snaps.
