Rams open as slight favorites over struggling 49ers in Week 6

    Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
Nothing from McVay on any injuries last night. Hoping Fuller is OK, and same with Obo.

The Rams are averaging 27.2 points per game and they’re 12th in the NFL lol.

That would’ve been 6th a year ago. Offenses are going c-r-a-z-y this season.

Week 5 show a big demotion for Ebukam, Henderson leading the RBs, Reynolds remaining WR3 and Lewis playing 14 snaps in his debut

Sean McVay liked what he saw from Cam Akers on Sunday, so “you can expect his workload to increase next week”

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
In his Rams debut, Terrell Lewis played 14/54 (26%) defensive snaps, tied with Obo Okoronkwo for second-most among L.A. OLBs against Washington. Leonard Floyd had most with 53/54 (98 percent). Lewis also played one snap on special teams.

Rams DL Aaron Donald (4.0 sacks) and LB Troy Reeder (3.0) became the first duo of players to each record 3.0 sacks in a game since Texans duo of Whitney Mercilus (3.5) and J.J. Watt (3.0) did it on Jan. 3, 2016 against Jaguars (Week 17 of 2015 season).

After knocking off Washington, the Rams have now beaten all four teams in the NFC East. It’s a rare early sweep of a division, but the Rams completed it in the first five weeks of the season. Surprisingly, it’s the first time they’ve ever swept the NFC East in franchise history, beating all four teams in the division.

It’s the fourth time, however, that Sean McVay has swept a division as head coach of the Rams. The previous three were the AFC South in 2017, the NFC West in 2018 and the AFC West in 2018.

Goff has been near-perfect on opening drives this year
If it seems like Goff hardly ever throws incompletions on the Rams’ first drive of games, it’s because he almost never does. After going 7-for-7 on the Rams’ opening drive of Sunday’s win, Goff is now a near-perfect 20-for-21 on his opening-drive passes this season.

If we’re being honest, 2 of [Reeder’s] sacks were handed to him. One was a good pursuit on a QB scramble.

Against a better team, the QB picks on him all day long in coverage with RBs and TEs.

Still a nice performance, but he’s not a starting LB in the NFL.

    #Rams Pressures per PFF:

    Fox – 9 (124 snaps)
    Ebukam – 5 (148 snaps)
    Reeder – 4 (66 snaps)
    Young – 3 (195 snaps)

    Rams RB numbers

All three averaging 4.0 YPC or better. Henderson leads the way at 4.5 and would be even better had he not been just running out the clock into the teeth of the Washington defense late. They may not have a 1,000-yard rusher, but they might have all three get 600-900 yards each.

Also worth noting- their collective receiving numbers (17 receptions for 140 yards and a TD). At that pace they would combine for 54 catches for 448 yards and 3 TDs. Not huge numbers but keep in mind how much the Rams’ RBs production in the passing game fell off a cliff last year- 37 catches, 260 yards, 1 TD.

Aaron Donald set the tone for today’s Rams win, while the rest of the DL set the table in a smartly-schemed way for an injury-plagued linebacker corps and blooming secondary.

    Kolby McLamb@kgee61
Rams have only allowed one.. ONE(!!!) TD in the second half all season.. and shouldn’t have even had that one.

    Dan Orlovsky@danorlovsky7
The best team in the NFC WEST is the @RamsNFL

    – HC is outstanding at game plan & play call
    – @JaredGoff16 is super accurate. When asked to make bigtime throws he does
    – their WRs all win and @CooperKupp is as a good a route runner as NFL has
    – @jalenramsey is all over the field

Oh my goodness. Cam Akers said the way he separated rib cartilage was actually landing on the pointy end of the football on a carry, and then having it poke into his ribs as three bodies landed on him.

    “Yeah, it was painful.”

Double edged compliment..30 pass attempts on Sunday and not a single interior DL from Wash FB team had a hit or sack on Jared Goff. Excellent job from guard to guard but unsurprising when you consider the look they get from AD everyday in practice!

    J.B. Long@JB_Long
The @RamsNFL didn’t just sweep the NFC East. They trailed for 11:26 and 24 snaps in those four games, combined.

Terrell Lewis says he’s been leaning on OL Andrew Whitworth for help in his development.

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
Lewis says Whitworth is always checking on him in the weight room and coaching him up at practice from an offensive line perspective.

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Rams RB Cam Akers on the 3-man rotation and whether it’s frustrating to share reps/not get the reps he got pre-injury:

“You really can’t get frustrated with the process. I’ll take my role as what it is. Whatever this team needs me to be or do, that’s what I’ll do.”

Akers: “Obviously I want more if more is available, but whatever they need me to do at this point in time, or at that point in time in a game, that’s what I’ll do.” (2/2)

Rams LB Terrell Lewis echoed what HC Sean McVay previously said about his knee situation, that it was due to infection concerns from a previous procedure. Though no infection was found & nothing was bothering Lewis, he said he appreciated the precautionary approach the team took.

    D’Marco Farr@DMarcoFarr1
Finished watching Rams offense. Lots of good stuff. Love the way Gerald Everett says I’m sorry (4 rec 90y). Woods, Kupp and Reynolds were equally clutch & dynamic. Old man Whitworth giving Chase Young the 4 qtr business was hilarious. Now time to watch defense. Popcorn is ready.

    about AD

After five games he’s first in the NFL in sacks, tied for first in QB hits, T-3rd in tackles for a. loss, T-4th in forced fumbles. That he does this despite playing on the inside and being the most marked man in football is crazy enough.

Watching him ascend the all time list is just staggering to me. I long believed that Warren Sapp was the best DT I had ever seen play. Now Aaron’s shadow is starting to creep up on Sapp’s career statistics.

    Sapp 96.5 sacks
    Donald 79.5 sacks.

    Games played
    Sapp 198
    Donald 99

That’s insane to me. I never, ever believed it was possible for a interior defensive lineman to be this productive.

AD. Won. Every. Rep! A defensive tackle should not be able to get 4 sacks in a game against a professional offense! (Even a struggling offense). Correct me if I’m wrong but Sapp, Randle, Glover or B.Young (best pass rushing DTs I’ve seen in person) never had a 4 sack game.

    Sosa K@QBsMVP
Aaron Donald is on pace for 106 total pressures this season (@PFF). That’d be the second-most in his career behind only his 2018 season (113). I can’t believe how good he is. It’s actually just become normal at this point, but it’s WILD.

    John Keim@john_keim
You can receive a master’s in offensive football by watching Sean McVay’s group. So good at moving the D w/boots & threat of it; good at creating mismatches, etc. damn good with it, but also helps that Goff knows that O so well. Good combo. Tough team; best Wash has faced so far

    Sosa K@QBsMVP
John Franklin Myers (@PFF) has 13 pressures this season. That would rank second on the Rams’ roster behind only Aaron Donald, and tied with Leonard Floyd and Michael Brockers. Only difference is JFM has done it on 50% less pass-rushing snaps.

The Rams fumbled this one, badly.

I wonder how many people notice this.

Look at the Rams snap counts from week 5, which are here: http://theramshuddle.com/topic/snap-counts-starting-w-dallas-game/#post-122903

    Here’s the 2 starting safeties:

They’re both listed as free safeties.

That’s not exactly accurate, but, it’s just a thing this snap count presentation does.

The accurate thing is they don’t play strong and free safeties.

Rams play left and right safeties.

That means they don’t adjust depending on where the TE lines up.

It also means each one independently has to in effect play both free and strong safety. Each has to have both sets of skills.

Sean McVay says the team does expect rookie kicker Samuel Sloman to be more consistent but in terms of where the rest of the league/pool of kickers is right now, McVay’s indication seems to be that Sloman will continue to get patience from the staff for now.

Sean McVay said Jordan Fuller did get banged up on the last play and team is evaluating his same shoulder. Obo Okoronkwo strained his elbow and will also he evaluated through the week. Team is hopeful to get Micah Kiser (groin) back this week tho may limit Wednesday.

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
S Jordan Fuller – [Rams] continuing to evaluate his shoulder, more clarity Wednesday.

McVay clarified it’s the same shoulder Fuller injured before and that it was “more of a stinger”

    garsh.

    i have no clue.

gil brandt who does know a little about football.

he ranks deacon #2 and youngblood #8 all time.

he ranks donald #13 and merlin #3 all time.

this was written just 3 years into donald’s career. i imagine donald would be higher up this list.

my guess just looking at lists online. minnesota or dallas. but merlin, deacon, and jack are just so revered. universally. and aaron is right behind them. he just hasn’t put in the years yet. he’s only in his seventh year. a lot of these defensive tackles played 13-14 seasons. he’s got a long way to go.

just looking at tackles minnesota has page and randle. dallas has lilly and white.

minnesota has carl eller and chris doleman at defensive end. dallas has… haley. but i don’t think he holds up against the rams’ defensive ends.

donald can if he plays long enough at a high caliber. i think it ceases to become an argument. but right now minnesota has them. 5 more high caliber seasons donald has to put in.

Well I don’t know how to rank “the greatest.” I do think that Donald belongs on the list of greats. I will say this–Donald has never had anyone of the same caliber or even close to it on the line with him (or among the LBs). Jones and Olsen, in contrast, played next to each other.

Leaving LBs out of it, who are the top ten DL of all time? Does Donald make that list?

Merlin and Jones do. Page does. Reggie White. Lily. Greene. Bruce Smith. I never saw him play but by reputation, Marchetti. That’s a start…

    Does Donald make that list?

he has to finish his career first. he’s less than halfway there.

longevity is the only question with donald at this point. but everything else is there.

but i’m not an expert or anything. i just watch donald, and i find it impossible to believe that there are 10 defensive linemen out there who are/were better than him.

i saw that you listed 8 so far. 2 of them being merlin and deacon. it’d be wild if donald made that list. that’s crazy. and i’m sure youngblood would make some people’s lists.
